re you up for an awesome virtual day out? Well, Monday is International Museum Day and top museums and galleries around the world are inviting people to take tours online. That means you can visit global exhibitions of art, culture, and nature without leaving the house, and all for free! You could choose to see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris or head to the Field Museum in Chicago to meet Sue, the world’s most complete Tyrannosaurus rex. Check out some of the world’s strangest science exhibits at The Exploratorium in San Francisco or see Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit from the first moon landing at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. International Museum Day’s theme this year celebrates the diversity of different cultures and people, so why don’t you visit museums in some faraway places you know very little about? For example, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, The Bejing Museum of Natural History or Nairobi National Museum in Kenya. Whether you’re potty about paintings, dippy about dinosaurs, a science geek or a space fan, visit a museum or gallery online on Monday and make the most of this fantastic opportunity to explore the weird and wonderful all over the world!

Tutankhamun’s mask is hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

I enjoy history, so I like visiting museums – especially interactive ones. Looking at artefacts and reading about them is OK, but history’s much more fun if you feel like you’re part of it. Last summer my family visited a living copper mine museum. As well as riding a train into the mine, we attended a Victorian-style school lesson, baked bread, made chocolate lollies, dressed up as Victorians, broke rocks and panned for ‘gold’. We learnt loads and had so much fun! Being a Christian is kind of similar. Reading about Jesus in our Bibles is OK and learning from other Christians helps too. However, it’s not until we interact with Jesus and others that we get the most out of it. It’s when we take part and try to live the life we’ve read about that we really learn what being a Christian means. How can you take part this week?

ow many clubs or groups are you a member of? They could include a choir, a drama group, a chess club or Scouts or Brownies. Groups or clubs like these are great fun because you get to do cool stuff with your friends. It’s also fantastic to feel like we belong to something. This is exactly how I feel when I think about being a Christian. It’s the coolest, most amazing, topnotch, incredibly fun club ever! Being a Christian means we are part of a unique group of people who share similar ideas, values and lifestyles. Being part of the ‘Christian Club’ means living our lives as Jesus wants us to and told us about in

the Bible. Sometimes that’s not the easiest thing to do. However, it gets so much easier if we ask other Christians to help us. If you ever feel like you’re struggling, these other Christians should be there to guide, support and help you – that’s what it’s like being in a club. And you can help and support others too! Most importantly, there’s one person who you can depend on any time, any day. He’ll help you through any problems you have and guide you through life. Who am I talking about? Jesus, of course! If you work with him, alive kids, you can do great things!

Selected verses from

Psalm 40

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare. I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, Lord, as you know. I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly. Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord; may your love and faithfulness always protect me.

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

Waiting patiently for God’s help isn’t easy, but when we turn our attention to God and focus on the promises he’s made we become encouraged – our fears and worries turn to hope and praise. God is faithful – he never breaks his word and he’s promised to always love and take care of us. We can spread this hope and joy by telling others about the wonderful ways God’s helped us.

(New International Version)

Dear God,

Thank you for keeping all your promises to love and care for me. Help me to share this great news with others.

Amen.

• 350g plain flour • 2 teaspoons ground ginger • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 100g butter • 175g soft light brown sugar • 1 egg • 4 tablespoons golden syrup

• Baking tray • Bowl • Sieve • Spoon • Rolling pin • Gingerbread person cutters • Wire rack • Writing icing • Extra flour for dusting surface • Grown-up to help

What To Do 1 Pre-heat an oven to 190°C (gas mark 5) and grease a baking tray (spread a thin layer of butter over the tray). 2 Sift the plain flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Then, using your hands, mix in the butter. 3 Add the sugar then stir in the syrup and egg to create a firm dough. 4 Spread some flour on to a kitchen work surface and, using a rolling pin, roll out your dough so it’s around 5mm thick. 5 Grab your gingerbread people cutters, cut out your shapes and then place them on the baking tray. Make sure they aren’t too close together because they’ll expand in the oven. 6 Once you’ve used all your dough, place your gingerbread people in the oven for 10–15 minutes until they’re golden brown. 7 Remove the gingerbread biscuits from the oven and leave them on the tray for a few minutes to firm up. Then transfer the biscuits to a wire rack to cool completely. 8 Once your gingerbread biscuits have cooled it’s time to get creative and use writing icing to decorate them. Remember to give them smiles!

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as most of them are shut to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.

Geography

Have you had fun exploring the area that you live in recently? Maybe you’ve visited some local ducks, discovered a wood that you didn’t know was there or found a field full of flowers. Why not use that new knowledge to create a scrapbook or guide to your local area? You could share it with your friends and family who live near you by emailing pictures of your scrapbook or guide to them. Below are some suggestions for things to include in your scrapbook.

International Museum Day is on Monday 18 May. Unfortunately it’s not possible to visit museums at the moment, but how about building a museum in your home? You could create lots of paintings to make a gallery exhibition of your work – remember to sign your art and make plaques to tell people what the painting is called! You could also use play dough, building blocks or items from your recycling to create sculptures. Choose a room in your home, display your work and invite everyone you live with to come to the grand opening. You could even video call your friends and family who don’t live with you and show them around your gallery.

Computing

Do you like watching cartoons or animated films? Do you know how animation works? Animation can be made using lots of drawings. To animate a dog you can draw lots of pictures of the dog doing slightly different poses. When you move between each drawing really quickly your eyes will think the dog is moving. Animation can also be made using models in the same way – by changing the models slightly and taking a photo, you can make it look like they’re moving.

Most animation we see nowadays are made using smartphones or computers, including films such as Moana and The LEGO Movie. They’re called computer-generated imagery films, or CGI for short.

We know you don’t have CGI software on your computer at home, but you could use the old-fashioned animation method and edit it using your parents’ or guardians’ smartphones and computers. Draw lots of pictures of an animal in slightly different positions, just like the dog described above. Take photos of each picture and import them into some basic video-editing software, such as Windows Movie Maker or iMovie. Then you can make yourself a simple animation film!
