Are you ready to see some of the world’s most awesome athletes in action? More than 2,000 athletes from hundreds of countries will be competing in the World Athletics Championships starting today (19 August). This historic event will take place in Hungary this summer and there will be a packed schedule of sport to enjoy.

Several athletes in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team are in top form heading into the championships. Sprint medal hopes will be focused on Dina Asher-Smith and Zharnel Hughes. Olympic and World 1500-metre medallist, Laura Muir will be aiming to improve on the bronze she won in 2022. While high jumper Morgan Lake will hopefully be in high spirits after breaking the British record earlier this year.

As well as enjoying all the exciting events, organisers want the athletes to inspire those watching in the stadium and at home to walk, run and push themselves to live healthier lives. Check out pages 12 and 13 for more information on how you can do just that!

The World Athletics Championships will take place in Budapest from 19–27 August. Coverage in the UK will be on BBC One, Two and Three, and BBC iPlayer.

I love sport! When I was a kid my friends and I would hold our own athletics tournaments in our street. We would even record interviews with each other after each event. We did similar things with other sports too – in the summer we would pretend to be players at Wimbledon or mimic our favourite cricketers. And, of course, we never needed much excuse to play footie, commentating while we pretended to score the winning goal at the World Cup Final.

Copying the people we look up to is great fun. Role models can be a really positive infuence on us, we just need to be careful about who or what we choose to copy. Of course, I believe the best role model to follow is Jesus. You can read all about him in the Bible, but don’t just read about him, follow his example too!

Tricky Rules by Justin Reeves

A re you good at keeping rules? Maybe you’re happy to stick to rules as long as they’re fair and everyone keeps them. You might like to challenge rules or try to change them – especially if they seem old fashioned or unfair.

In this week’s cartoon Bible story we see the Israelites struggling to stick to God’s rules – rules that were designed to help them have good relationships with God and each other. To be honest, I sometimes nd God and the Bible dif cult to understand, so I kind of get why the Israelites might nd keeping God’s rules hard.

Having said that, the Ten Commandments aren’t that dif cult to gure out. But that doesn’t mean they’re all easy to keep. Not killing people is a pretty easy one to get your head around. However, the one about not being jealous of what other people have can catch you out. Respecting your parents can be tricky at times. Then there’s the one about idols – you might not bow down to a golden calf like the Israelites did, but do you idolise your favourite sportsperson, music artist, actor, scientist or other celebrity?

In Matthew 22:36–40, Jesus reveals the most important commandment is to love God with everything you’ve got. He then adds that the next most important thing is to love others as you love yourself. Again, not easy rules to stick to, but a good way to try to live your life. Ask God to help you to love him and others.
