You will probably know the name of the rst person to set foot on the Moon – just in case you don’t know, that was Neil Armstrong. But do you know the name of the rst spacecraft to land on the Moon? Well, that was Luna 2. When we say land on the Moon, it was actually more of a crash landing, but that is what was supposed to happen.
Launched using a powerful Luna 8K72 rocket on 12 September 1959, Luna 2 reached the Moon’s surface the next day. Similar to Luna 1 in design, Luna 2 was loaded with instruments that performed tests to help scientists learn more about the Moon. As well as experiments, Luna 2 carried two football-like metal objects (called pennants) engraved with the USSR coat of arms and the date of the mission.
