The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Comets

Comets are large objects made of dust and ice that travel from the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud. They become visible from Earth when they’re captured by the Sun’s gravity and whizz towards it. Some comets head right into the Sun and are never seen again, while others become trapped in an oval-shaped orbit and keep reappearing in our night skies. The most famous comet is Halley’s Comet, which can be seen from Earth every 75 to 79 years.

Comets have four main parts: the nucleus – a bundle of ice and dust that is usually around 10 miles wide; the coma – a cloud of gas around the nucleus that forms as the comet heats up; the dust tail – a trail of dust that can stretch for millions of miles; the ion tail –which is made up of electrically charged gas.
