There's a idden calculator h ge of on every pa comic. this week's n See if you ca ! ll a m e find th
ow do you stop a cake from flopping? Maths! How do you win Monopoly? Sums! How do you solve a puzzle? Numbers! Well, we realise it takes a bit more than that, but you can’t really bake cakes, win games or solve puzzles without being able to add, subtract, multiply or divide. Even when we don’t realise it, numbers play a big part in our lives! Yet loads of people are a bit scared by numbers or think they’re not brainy enough to do maths. But that’s simply not true – numbers can be fun and anyone can learn number skills and get better at them. That’s why thousands of people will be celebrating National Numeracy Day on Wednesday (13 May) and taking part in a challenge to improve their skills. You don’t have to be mad about maths to get involved! Even if you’re a keen baker or gardener, love caring for animals or helping nurse people; even if you’re a budding artist or author or want to be a star on the stage – all these things involve number skills. So, whatever your passion, find your maths mojo and have ‘sum’ fun by downloading creative, colouring and counting games at numeracyday.com/get-involved. For additional number fun, try our Sudoku and Super Sum! puzzles in Giggle in the Middle on pages 8 and 9. Turn to pages 12 and 13 for an idea for more fun with numbers in Class of Your Own.
I’m not great with numbers. Not only am I no good at sums, but I get confused by lots of things involving numbers too. I get phone numbers in the wrong order, I sometimes get the hour wrong when telling the time and I have to really concentrate to remember dates. There’s no getting away from it, though, we need numbers. How would we find our way around Kids Alive! without page numbers? Even the Bible depends on numbers – and I don’t just mean the fourth book in the Old Testament! Or is it the fifth? How would I find my favourite Bible verse (Proverbs 3:6) without numbers? How many days did it take God to create the world? How many years did the Israelites roam the desert? How many disciples did Jesus have? I might not be great with numbers, but numbers are great! Let’s hear it for numbers!

Finding Your Way
H
ave you ever been in a maze – the huge ones with the big hedges that you have to find your way around? I have and it can be very confusing! You think you’ve positioned yourself in the correct place and all you need to do is take the next left and you’ll be out … but then you end up at a dead end! When that happens, it makes it so much harder to find your way to the exit. Suddenly, you have no idea where to turn. It’s the same if you try to find your way somewhere you don’t know without using a map. It can all become very confusing and often you get lost! Thankfully, the way to God is a lot simpler. At
by Cara Mott least it can be if you want it to be. You don’t have to worry about dead ends or losing your way because there is just one route to take – Jesus! When Jesus died on the cross he took away all the wrong things people do. That means all of us can have a relationship with God. What’s Jesus’ path? It’s living life Jesus’ way. That means being a good Christian by living as he’s shown and told us to. If you’re not sure what that way is, all you have to do is pick up a Bible and have a read of the Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There is lots of fantastic advice in there. Trust Jesus and he’ll show you the way!
Maze Muddle
Curious Caitlin has got lost and wants to find her way to God. Thankfully, she has Jesus to help her. Work out which way she needs to take through the maze.

Selected verses from
Psalm 9
The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.
Everyone should be able to live a safe, healthy and happy life, but sadly this doesn’t always happen. However, this psalm, full of hope and praise, reminds us that God is honest and treats everyone fairly. He cares for everyone, especially those who others might not. He listens to them when they ask for help and provides them with what they need.
I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. I will tell about the wonderful things you have done. The Lord set up his throne to bring justice, and he will rule for ever. He judges everyone on Earth fairly. He judges all nations honestly. Many people are suffering – crushed by the weight of their troubles. But the Lord is a refuge for them, a safe place they can run to. Sing praises to the Lord, who sits as King in Zion. When suffering people cry for help, he does not ignore them. It may seem that those who are poor and needy have been forgotten, but God will not forget them. He will not leave them without hope. (Easy-to-Read Version)
Dear God,
Thank you for remembering people who are going through tough times and for helping them in the ways that they need the most.
Amen.

Different grasses at Wimbledon were tested by a mechanical foot – complete with tennis shoe! To find out which grass would be best for the tournament, turf specialists designed a machine that could stomp and slide across small patches of grass they’d grown. The grass experts would turn the machine on and return later to see which grass held up best. Today Wimbledon uses 100 per cent ryegrass on its courts.

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as most of them are shut to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.
Languages
You might have started learning another language at school. Do you know any French, German or maybe Spanish? They’re all really interesting languages, but we want to talk to you about a completely different type of language this week – sign language! Sign language is a visual way of communicating that uses gestures, facial expressions and body language. It’s mainly used by people who are deaf or those that have hearing impairments. Even if you don’t have any hearing problems, it’s a really good language to know, because it means if you meet someone with hearing issues you can communicate with them. Below are some basic British Sign Language greetings for you to begin learning. If you’d like to learn more signs, visit british-sign.co.uk where you and your parents or guardians can sign up for an online course.

One of the best ways to keep fit indoors is doing circuits. This means doing one exercise for 30 seconds, then having a little rest before doing another exercise for another 30 seconds. Below are some exercises you can try to keep yourself active at home. Do each exercise for 30 seconds and take a 30-second rest between each one. If you’re not too tired afterwards, start the circuit again! Remember to do some warm-up and warm-down stretches before and after exercising.

Do you have a pack of cards? If not make yourself one by looking online to see what cards are in every pack. Here’s a game to play in pairs. Lay out all your cards face down, but don’t use the kings, queens, jacks and aces. Turn over three random cards. The challenge is to use the three numbers you’ve uncovered to make a sum. For example, 3+5=8. If you can make a sum you get to keep all three cards, otherwise it’s the next person’s turn. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins!

They have also painted rainbows and drawn chalk rainbows on their house to cheer up the neighbours and say thank you to the postperson. It’s been lots of fun!
