What must it have felt like to be in Jerusalem on the day that Jesus rode in on a donkey? On that first Palm Sunday the atmosphere must have been electric. The Bible tells us that a crowd of people came to see Jesus enter the city like a king! Have you ever seen celebrations on the TV when it’s the Queen’s official birthday or she is attending a special event? Maybe that’s what it was like in Jerusalem that day. Loads of happy faces shouting and singing and waving things in the air to show their joy – although on Palm Sunday it was tree branches rather than union flags that they were waving! Sadly, the atmosphere in Jerusalem didn’t stay as happy. Just a few days later, the mood completely changed, as a crowd of people shouted to encourage the Roman governor Pilate to have Jesus killed! It’s even possible that some of the same people who celebrated on Palm Sunday, turned on Jesus and joined those shouting for his death. Thankfully that isn’t the end of the story. The wonder of Easter Sunday, and the amazing future that offers, was just around the corner! I’ve spent a lot of time this week reading, thinking and writing about Palm Sunday, but I keep on fast-forwarding to Good Friday. Then I thought, why don’t I take some time to simply enjoy Palm Sunday? After all, none of Jesus’ followers who were there on the day started thinking about what was to come five days later. I imagine they were focused on what was going on around them – a massive celebration of Jesus! There’ll be plenty of time to read and wonder about what happened at Easter next weekend, and it is important that we do that. But this week, enjoy learning about Palm Sunday and try to imagine what it might have been like on that day. Perhaps you could think of a way to act it out with your family or put on some bangin’ worship music and just enjoy celebrating Jesus.

ost of you will do your best to avoid bad things happening to you. For example, you wouldn’t go out in the dark by yourselves or go off with strangers. However, in this week’s Bible cartoon we see Jesus going to Jerusalem even though he knows he’s going to be arrested there. That’s crazy! If I knew I was going to be arrested in a certain place I’d stay away – in fact I’d run in the other direction to make sure I was OK. Jesus’ decision was different, though. He knew he had to go to Jerusalem so that he could do what he came to Earth to do. We often think that Jesus came to Earth just to perform miracles, heal the sick, feed the hungry and change people’s lives. Of course, he did all those things and we can learn lots of things from the way he lived, but Jesus came to Earth for one reason – to save humankind. That was never going to be easy

by Nathan Bright

– not even for the Son of God! In this week’s cartoon Bible story Jesus prays to his Father in Heaven and begs for a different way for things to happen. But Jesus knew what he had to do and God gave him the strength to stick with his plan. So when the guards came to arrest Jesus he went with them – even though he’d done nothing wrong. He did this so that he could complete his mission to save humankind – including you and me. Sometimes we have to do things that we don’t want to do so that other people’s lives can be better. At the moment there’s a very obvious example of that: we’re all being asked to keep our distance and stay at home, so that others have the best chance of staying healthy. You can probably think of other examples. Jesus did things for the sake of others, let’s try to do the same.

Selected verses from

Psalm 118

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

The crowd cheered as Jesus entered Jerusalem because they believed he was coming to save them. Jesus has truly saved us all and offers us a relationship with him that will last for ever. It’s a friendship that we can trust, even though things around us may seem uncertain. When we’re facing challenges, this psalm reminds us that God is in control, keeping us safe and because of that we can also praise him.

Praise the Lord because he is good! His faithful love will last for ever! The Lord is with me, so I will not be afraid. No one on Earth can do anything to harm me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in people. Lord, I thank you for answering my prayer. I thank you for saving me. This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be happy today! The people say, ‘Praise the Lord! The Lord saved us! Welcome to the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’ Lord, you are my God, and I thank you. Praise the Lord because he is good. His faithful love will last for ever. (Easy-to-Read Version)

Dear God,

Thank you for always being with us and keeping us safe. And thank you for loving us each and every day.

Amen.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates…

A person sheds about 25,000 flakes of dead skin a minute! That’s one and a half million flakes per hour and about 450 grams every year! This happens because your outer skin cells are replaced every month with new healthy cells. You can’t see it happening but most of the cells in your skin are working to make new cells.

What is zero waste? Zero waste means changing the way we live to try to limit the amount of rubbish we’re throwing away and sending to landfill or even to be recycled. Obviously going completely zero waste is quite tough, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make changes to try to do your bit, even if they’re only small.

How much food waste? Around 4.5 million tons of food is thrown away by families every year. Can you believe that? That amount of food could have created 10 billion meals! Wasting food is really bad for the environment. Every item of food needs resources, such as water, land and people’s labour to be produced. So wasting food means those resources have been wasted too.

The easiest way to reduce food waste is by thinking carefully about how much we really need to buy or cook. Lots of people throw away food because it’s gone out of date, so it’s important only to buy the food that we know we’re going to eat. Have you seen the dates that are on food packaging? Go to the kitchen and take a look. There will be a date somewhere that either says ‘use by’ or ‘best before’. Use by dates are important, because they’re about food safety – eating foods after this date can cause illnesses such as food poisoning. Best before dates are less accurate and are about quality. These foods won’t necessarily be dangerous after the best before date, but the quality might not be as good.

L

in a Kids Alive! world 27/03/2020 17:11

Can you use leftovers? Lots of food, such as bread, milk and meat, can be put in the freezer before the ‘use by’ date so you can keep it for longer. This is the same for cooked leftovers. If your family has cooked more food than you can eat, you can put it into storage boxes and into the freezer for another day. Your family will save money too! Just make sure it’s safe to store and eat. The NHS website has lots of advice and tips about how to safely store and use leftovers – go to nhs.uk and search for ‘leftovers’.

What is Composting? Home composting is an environmentally friendly way of getting rid of garden and food waste, including things such as vegetable peelings. Composting is usually done in a bin or heap in the garden. Natural rubbish is placed there to mix and decompose, eventually becoming a fertilizer that can be used for a garden.

If you live in a city or have a small garden, composting might not work for you, but if you have a larger garden, ask your parents or guardians to look into creating a home composting system for your rubbish. There’s lots of information on the Royal Horticultural Society’s website about how you can start composting. Check out rhs.org.uk and search for ‘composting’.

Your Journey Here are some ideas of ways you and your family can start a journey to zero waste by reducing waste in your home. If you keep throwing away uneaten food, talk with your parents or guardians about how big your portions should be. See if smaller portions means less waste.

If you’ve got more food at home than you can eat and it’s still in date, look for a food bank near you that you can donate it to. There are also apps that allow you to find people near you who want to swap items you don’t need.

Save as much food as you can by freezing leftovers.

Look for beeswax wraps as a reusable replacement for kitchen products such as plastic cling film.

Think about plastic waste when shopping too. Take reusable bags and ask your parents or guardians to buy loose fruit and vegetables when possible, rather than ones wrapped in plastic.
