Powerful Cleanser
“ Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love … Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” —Psalm 51:1-2
In the laundry room, stains are enemy No 1. Grass skids, coffee spills and ground-in dirt—it’s hard to get clothes clean. Some stains lie buried beneath the surface. In a spiritual sense, sin leaves a black mark in our lives that is difficult to erase. Fortunately, there is a “powerful cleanser” in Jesus Christ. If you are harbouring a secret sin, He can bring healing and forgiveness. Jesus loves you, no matter what you’ve done. If you want to be stain-free, pray about it, seek help from a pastor or trusted friend and resolve to live in a way that is pleasing to God. When you surrender to Him, He’ll wipe away the stains of sin.

“Wow!” Moments
D
uring a recent classical concert in Boston, the Handel and Haydn (H+H) Society had just finished a performance of Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music. In the moment of silence that followed, a child in the audience exclaimed, “Wow!” The awe and wonder in his voice made the entire audience applaud in enthusiastic agreement. “It was one of the most wonderful moments I’ve experienced in the concert hall,” said orchestra CEO David Snead. The moment went viral when the clip was posted on Twitter. The nine-year-old was eventually identified and he and his family were invited to attend another Mozart concert when the 2019-2020 season opens. That’s the power of music, which can stir hearts in ways that could never be imagined. David and Diane Shatto didn’t see a purpose for religion in their lives. That is, until they decided to take in a performance by The Salvation Army’s Canadian Staff Band, then on tour in California. In the middle of the service, a soloist sang It Is Well With My Soul. “And that’s when everything changed,” says David. “Since that morning, life has never been the same.” David and Diane’s story is on page 16. Elsewhere in this issue of Faith & Friends, you can see our take on the new Spider-Man: Far From Home movie and find out how Salvation Army summer camps make a difference in the lives of children in Canada and Bermuda. y library consists almost entirely of borrowed books. One that I must return is jam-packed with random quotes from the world of sports. Like this from Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench: “I was thinking about making a comeback, until I pulled a muscle vacuuming.” NBA executive Pat Williams said, “We can’t win at home. We can’t win on the road. I just can’t figure out where else to play.”
Former NBA centre Chuck Nevitt told the press, “My sister’s expecting a baby, and I don’t know if I’m going to be an uncle or an aunt.” Hall of Fame NFL receiver Jerry Rice said, “I feel like I’m the best, but you’re not going to get me to say that.” Well, we’d all like to be the best. To hold the trophy high and chant, “I’m number 1!” Most of my sports career was spent saying, “I’m number 12,” which is not something

you shout loudly. The truth is, I’m not number 1. God comes first, others next, then me. Philippians 2:3-4 tells us, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” (New Living Translation). the greatest key to lasting relationships: selflessness. “She Means It” David Ireland was dying from a crippling neurological disease. His wife was expecting when he wrote the book Letters to an Unborn Child. David would never take that child to a ball game or on a camping trip, but that child would know he was loved. Here’s what David tells his child about his wife: “Your mother is very special. Taking her out to dinner means she

PHIL CALLAWAY has to dress me, shave me, brush my teeth, comb my hair; wheel me out of the house and down the steps, open the garage and put me in the car, take the pedals off the chair, stand me up, sit me in the seat of the car, twist me around so that I’m comfortable, fold the wheelchair, put it in the car, go around to the other side of the car, start it up, back it out, get out of the car, pull the garage door down, get back into the car, and drive off to the restaurant. And then, it starts all over again. “Finally, we sit down to dinner, and she feeds me throughout the entire meal. And when it’s over she pays the bill, pushes the wheelchair out to the car again, and reverses the same routine. And with real warmth she’ll say, ‘Honey, thank you for taking me out to dinner.’ I never quite know what to answer. “When I have to wash my hair; this involves sitting with my shirt off in front of the sink. There’s a mirror there and I am able to look at myself, the muscles and flesh having slowly disappeared, I begin to feel depressed. “Joyce will say, ‘Oh, don’t look! I’m
going to take that silly mirror down if you don’t stop admiring yourself.’ “Then, your mother will sit down, place my hand in her lap and say, ‘You’re so handsome to me. You’re the most handsome man in the world. I love you so much.’ “And somehow, out of the ancient well of our experience together, I know she means it.” Sacrificial Love This is love, my friends. We need to hear about such people, don’t we? I admire the skills of athletes, but we must never elevate the stars above the servants. Because of Huntington’s disease, a hereditary illness that occurs on my wife’s side of the family, I have brothers-in-law who show the sacrificial love, integrity and good humour of the amazing caregiver you just read about. Speaking of integrity, I’d better return this book. But I have time for one more quote from boxing legend Rocky Graziano: “I quit school in Grade 6 because of pneumonia. Not because I had it, but because I couldn’t spell it.”

stared in shock and almost stopped leading the congregation in singing Nearer, My God, to Thee as she walked through the door of our little country church. Long, stringy hair hung into her eyes, her slight frame lost in baggy clothes. She stood in the doorway, looking around the crowd as if searching for help. What is she doing, interrupting our church service? I thought. Can’t she see we are worshipping God here?
8 • JULY 2019 I faithandfriends.ca
Stumbling Into Worship My husband, Kevin, the pastor, stood up from his place at the piano and gently guided the stranger into the foyer. We continued with our worship. But every eye was on the door, waiting to see if Kevin would return with or without the stranger. After a long five minutes, both of them re-entered the sanctuary. Kevin took his seat at the piano and the lady sat down in the second row.
From my place at the podium, I noticed she sang the hymns without a book, never missing a word. She even participated in the praise and prayer time. “My name is Tammy, and I’d like you to pray for my only
He wasn’t available to help Tammy. But Fred and Grace, a couple known for their generosity, gave Tammy a cheque to cover her car repair. She thanked us profusely and went on her way.
Where did she come from? Why is she here? I couldn’t help but wonder. JEANETTE LEVELLIE brother, Joel, who needs a heart transplant.” Tammy went into great detail about Joel’s health issues, as if we all knew him. Where did she come from? Why is she here? I couldn’t help but wonder. Our church building is located kilometres away from the nearest town and on the way to almost nowhere. Rarely does anyone just stumble into a service on a Sunday morning. Doing Versus Being In between shaking hands and chatting with our congregants as they left, Kevin shared with me that the brakes on Tammy’s car were failing and she needed a mechanic. Someone had told her there was a mechanic in our congregation, so she came when she knew that someone would be here—during church! It’s true that one of our deacons, Stan Hopper, is a superb mechanic.
At lunch, I confessed to Kevin that my priorities were out of order. “I was offended that Tammy interrupted our worship,” I said. “Yet what’s more worshipful than helping someone in need? Aren’t we called to not only gather, sing praises and hear preaching but also to reach out to ‘the least of these’ like Tammy?” I knew the answer to my own question. I could even quote Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.” From now on, I’d have a different view of strangers in our midst. Tammy’s visit was six months ago. She’s not been back to worship with us since. But I’m grateful for the gift she gave me, that divine interruption. It changed my thinking from “doing” church to “being” the church.

s summer approaches, 10-year-old Santiago is counting down the days to summer camp. Three years ago, Santiago and his family came to Canada from Colombia. During their first summer in Gatineau, Que., they connected with their local Salvation Army community and family services department. Santiago’s mom, Shirley, learned about summer camp but was nervous to send her youngest away. “Santiago was excited to go,” says Shirley. “He loved camp and can’t wait to go back. in Quebec is located on the shores of magnificent Lac l’Achigan in the Laurentians. The camp, which The Salvation Army owns and operates, has served the population of Quebec since 1933. Themed weeks include adventure camps and moms-andtots camp. “The lake was my favourite part—canoeing and paddle boating,” Santiago says. “I made lots of new friends—some spoke Spanish like I did. And twice, my friends and I won the trophy for the cleanest table. That made me really happy.” For decades, The Salvation Army has provided weeklong and day camps for children. Last year, more than 4,000 children attended Canadian Salvation Army summer camps.

owntime, memories, friends, activities. The Salvation Army’s moms-and-tots camp, located at Jackson’s Point on the shores of Lake Simcoe, Ont., is for mothers and children to enjoy a break, spend time together and refresh in a restful, relaxing setting. “Camp is a fantastic getaway,” says Tammy, 38. “It is the perfect opportunity to have a small vacation without having to worry about making meals and planning activities. It’s a wonderful time to build friendships and experience the joys of camp with my son.” Tammy is raising her son, six-yearold Ethan, on her own. Ethan’s father
left when Tammy learned she was pregnant and her extended family is far away. “Sometimes I feel like giving up, but camp helps me clear my head and find strength to deal with stuff that comes with being a single parent,” says Tammy. “At camp, our stories are often similar, which means people understand my challenges and frustrations. Their support reminds me I’m not alone.” “Only Me” While Tammy enjoys activities such as swimming, painting and jewelry making, Ethan receives quality care with engaged and competent staff. Stories, crafts and games are some of the fun things he does. “At home, Ethan has one or two friends. At camp, he has 10 to 20. He loves the activities and every year pesters me to go back,” Tammy chuckles. “I never went to camp as a child,” she says. “I’m grateful to The Salvation Army for a week at camp that leaves me refreshed, encouraged and inspired. This is big, because at home there is only me.”

how Spider-Man is using his newfound fame for good. His aunt recruits him to lend a hand at a Salvation Army fundraiser she has organized in support of people who are homeless. It seems our web-slinging hero is just as committed to defending the vulnerable as he is to defending the world. But, at heart, Peter is still just an awkward teenager. And at the beginning of Far From Home, he is ready for a vacation. Leaving the Avengers and his spider suit behind, he heads off to Europe on a highschool class trip, making stops in London, Venice and Prague. “I just want to go on a trip with my friends,” Peter says. “Europe doesn’t really need a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.” But it turns out, Peter is wrong. Because Europe is under attack. Just as he’s starting to relax, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), former director of the S.H.I.E.L.D. law 14 • JULY 2019 I faithandfriends.ca
enforcement agency, shows up in his hotel room. Fury wastes no time in recruiting Peter to fight against the Elementals, a mysterious group of four world-destroying creatures. “I think Nick Fury just hijacked our summer vacation,” Peter laments. Luckily, his Aunt May has packed the spider suit for him. Joining Spider-Man and Fury in the fight is Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was also recruited by Fury because of his supposed expertise on the Elementals. Comic book readers will recognize Mysterio as a classic Spider-Man villain. So is he really friend or foe? Peter doesn’t know. Despite Peter’s desire for a break, it’s clear that staying out of the fray isn’t an option. People are suffering. The fate of the world hangs in the balance. “You’ve got gifts, Parker,” Fury tells him. “But you have a job to do. Are you going to step up, or not?”
“ You have a job to do. Are you going to step up, or not?” NICK FURY The Right Path Peter Parker is hardly the first person to want to run away from a tough mission. As Peter tries to avoid his superhero duties by going on vacation, the Bible is full of people who tried to run away from what God wanted them to do. When God asked Jonah to share His message with the people in Nineveh, Jonah hopped on a ship and went as far in the other direction as possible (see Jonah 1:1-3). When God told Moses to confront the Pharaoh in Egypt and demand that he release the Israelite people from slavery, Moses said, “Send someone else” (see Exodus 4:13). It’s a good thing that God is patient and He never gives up on us. Sometimes He shows up in the most unexpected places, to “hijack” our lives and put us on the right path. Though they were initially reluctant, both Jonah and Moses stepped up and obeyed God, and countless people were saved as a result. Everyday Heroes It doesn’t matter who you are—you don’t have to be Spider-Man to be a hero. But there’s something to that “friendly neighbourhood” part. What are the needs in your neighbourhood? How can you love others
and make a difference in the world around you? It could be supporting a Salvation Army homeless shelter, as SpiderMan does in Far From Home. It could be welcoming a family of newcomers on your street, or volunteering at the local food bank. As Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Be an everyday hero. The world is waiting. Giving Hope Today It’s no surprise that Spider-Man would be a supporter of The Salvation Army. Across Canada and Bermuda, and in 131 countries worldwide, the Army is giving hope to people in need. More than 1.7 million people were helped by The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda last year. 3.2 million free meals were served at shelters and in feeding programs. 7,300 shelter, addictions, detox and mental-health beds were provided each night. 21,000 people were helped when an emergency or natural disaster struck. 130,354 “everyday heroes” volunteered with the Army, contributing 1,130,965 hours of their time. faithandfriends.ca I JULY 2019

thought. It’s describing my journey. I thought God was working in my heart to tell me the church is more than just a social institution. It was as though He was saying, “I want you to know I’m in the church. There are people in the church I’m working in. You don’t have to feel like you don’t belong there.” Perhaps there are some people who are involved in religion for the wrong reasons, or see the church as just a social club. But God wanted me to focus beyond that, to see the power of God in people who worshipped Him in spirit and truth. It took me back to the days when all the people that I knew in the church were sincere. The people who truly believed in what they were doing and saying, who loved me and taught me about God. Ultimately, the concert changed the course of our lives, and I will be forever grateful. David and Diane Shatto are now studying to become Salvation Army pastors.

NIFTY THRIFTY
The Great Outdoors Refresh your patio this summer. Is your outdoor space feeling a little drab? After a few seasons of exposure to the elements, a patio can take a real beating. If you want a refresh, but aren’t sure how to do it, start with these budget items from your local Salvation Army thrift store. Tray. The perfect patio accessory. While great for serving food, it can also be combined with an ottoman to create a tabletop. Find one that will work outside—for example, a tray made of metal or rattan.
Before
Candle holders. A nice design touch that also provides lovely ambient lighting. Look for large candlesticks or lanterns. Potted plant. Add greenery or colourful flowers to your patio. Plants will make your space feel cozy. Adding these three key pieces of decor to your patio will give the space new life. A small amount of spending can have a big impact, thanks to the Salvation Army thrift store.
