Just for Kids January 2025

Page 1

Hi kids!

It is officially 2025! I hope you all had a fun time ringing in the new year with friends and family.

I always enjoy the beginning of a new year because it feels like a fresh start. I can reflect on all the great and exciting things that happened in the previous year and plan out the year ahead. What do I want to do? Who do I want to be?

Many people choose to set goals, called “resolutions,” in the new year. These are mine: I want to learn a new skill, pray every day and read at least 10 books. What do you hope to accomplish in 2025?

Just remember that whatever you do this year, God is with you.

My favourite thing I did last year is …

What are some goals you can set for yourself? Here are a few ideas:

This year, I will …

• Pray every morning when I wake up.

• Start taking classes at church to become a junior soldier.

• Keep my room clean and make my bed every day.

• Try a new hobby, such as drawing, singing or playing a sport.

• Invite a friend to church or youth group.

• Read five books.

• Improve my grades at school by doing homework and asking for help.

year, I will …

Hi kids!

A few months ago, I was invited to attend a friend’s wedding. How fun! Except there was only one problem—I had no idea what to wear. Should I wear a black dress or a green one? Is it going to be cold and will I need a jacket? What will everyone else be wearing?

I went to many stores looking for just the right outfit. When I got to the wedding, I realized that it really didn’t matter what I wore. My friends were just happy to see me and glad that I was there to celebrate with them. In the end, my dress didn’t matter. I didn’t need to worry so much after all. It was friendship that was most important. It is normal to worry about the big things in life, such as school, work and our family and friends. And sometimes we worry about little things too, such as what to wear. But the Bible tells us that we do not need to worry because God will always take care of us.

What does the Bible say about worrying?

So don’t worry. Don’t say, “What will we eat?” Or, “What will we drink?” Or, “What will we wear?” People who are ungodly run after all those things. Your Father who is in heaven knows that you need them. But put God’s kingdom first. Do what He wants you to do. Then all those things will also be given to you. So don’t worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

—Matthew 6:31-34

Connect the dots and colour.

What does this mean?

Sometimes our worries feel very big. The Bible tells us that when we are feeling anxious or worried, we can trust in God. God always has a plan for us, and He will guide us on the right path. He knows what our needs are, and no matter how big or small, our worries will be taken care of when we have faith in God. We can be glad knowing that God will provide for us.

When you are feeling worried or anxious, you can:

• Pray to God. He will hear your prayers.

• Talk to a parent, family member or trusted adult.

• Sing a song or listen to music that calms you.

• Take a few deep breaths.

• Do an activity that you enjoy, such as colouring or dancing.

• Read your Bible to learn more about God and His love for you.

Hi kids!

Have you ever seen the movie Inside Out? It’s about a young girl named Riley and the five animated emotions inside her mind: joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. Each of these emotions plays an important role in her life, teaching her valuable lessons as she grows up. They all take turns helping Riley as she learns what it means to feel happy, sad, angry or upset.

These are all normal feelings, and just like Riley, everybody has them. It is normal to feel sad when we miss somebody or happy when we get a good grade or score a goal in hockey. Anger is normal, too—even Jesus felt angry sometimes.

As Christians, we know that we can turn to God whenever we are upset. God can help calm us and guide us through hard feelings. We can also follow Jesus’ example to learn how we should treat others and act when we are angry. Keep reading this issue of Just for Kids to learn what the Bible says about anger.

Emoji Match

What did Jesus tell His disciples to do in John 15:12? Match the emoji and the words to find out.

My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry.

—2 Corinthians 5:17

What does the Bible say about anger?

What does this mean?

The Bible does not tell us that feeling angry is a sin, but it says that anger can lead to bad actions. When people feel angry, they can sometimes say and do things that hurt others. Instead, talk to God and ask Him to help you feel calm so that you can find a solution to your problem.

What does this mean?

Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Be a good listener and take time to show others that they are important. Do not interrupt or get angry when somebody speaks. Be patient, listen and respond kindly.

Hi kids!

If you’ve ever been on a roller-coaster before, you know how fast they move up and down. The cart zips along the track, up, up, up a hill, only to plummet back to the ground. Sometimes they even go upside down!

Life is kind of like that, too. Some days are really fun and exciting, but other days are hard. Everybody has challenges that can feel like falling down the hill of a roller-coaster. As Christians, we know that God’s love can lift us up. When we face tough times and we feel low, we can trust in God to help us keep going.

There are many stories in the Bible about people who endured through hard times. Jesus Himself faced obstacles. He died on the cross for us. But He kept going to fulfil God’s plan, because He loves us.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about Paul and Silas who kept loving God—even while stuck in prison!

OPaul and Silas in Prison

Acts 16:16-34

nce, when the Apostle Paul and his friend, Silas, were going to a place of prayer, they were met by a female slave who was possessed by a spirit. She claimed to predict the future and followed Paul and Silas, shouting at them.

Paul became so troubled that he turned to her and told the spirit to leave the girl alone in the name of Jesus Christ. The men who owned her were not happy with this. Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown in jail because they healed her.

Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing songs to God, and the other prisoners listened. Suddenly, an earthquake erupted that shook the prison walls. The doors flew open and their chains came loose.

When the guard woke up and saw what happened, he was terrified. He asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?”

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.” Paul and Silas told him about Jesus and the guard invited them to join his family for a meal. The guard was filled with joy because he was saved by God!
