Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem
Connect the Dots
ISSUE 1
Every year, Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. When He was 12 years old, they went to the temple as usual. After the feast was over, His parents left to return home. Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were not aware of it. They thought He was somewhere in their group. So they travelled on for a day. Then they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends. They did not find Him, so they went back to Jerusalem to look for Him. After three days, they found Him in the temple courtyard, sitting with the teachers.
Then He went back to Nazareth with His parents and obeyed them.
Jesus became wiser and stronger. He also became more and more pleasing to God and to people. Read the whole story in your Bible in Luke 2:41-52.

Hi kids!
Have you ever done a polar bear swim? It’s an event, usually held in January, where people go for a swim in the ocean or a lake. Brrr! Can you imagine how cold it must be?
Baptism is a tradition for many Christians. It is a ceremony that takes place when somebody decides they want to accept God into their lives. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, and what that teaches us about God.

The Baptism of Jesus
John the Baptist had a special relationship with God. He preached and told people what they should do to obey God. John told everyone to get ready because God was going to send His Son.
People went to John to confess their sins and be baptized in the Jordan River. Walking into the river with John meant they were serious about living a good life and loving God.
One day, Jesus walked to the river where John was teaching. Jesus told John, “I want you to baptize Me.” John was surprised. He didn’t think he was good enough to baptize Jesus. But Jesus told him that it was God’s plan.
When Jesus came up out of the water after being baptized, heaven was opened.
Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on Him like a dove.
A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, and I love Him. I am very pleased with Him.”
The next time John saw Jesus, he pointed to Him. “Look! There He is! He is God’s Chosen One. He will take away the sins of the world.”

Jesus’ Baptism and the Trinity
The baptism of Jesus was an amazing event. It’s the first time God reveals Himself as the Trinity.
“Trinity” means that we believe there is one God, but He exists in three Persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
You can think of the Trinity as a braided bracelet.
Each Person of the Trinity is one strand. Each has a different colour, but together they form one bracelet—one God.

Hi kids!
I really like fancy jelly beans—you know, the ones that come in a million different flavours. So when I buy a bag of them, it’s so tempting to eat them all, even though I know I’d feel sick afterward. That’s often what it’s like with temptation—we want to do something, even though we know it’s wrong or might hurt us. Like when we’re tempted to lie to our parents or cheat on a test at school.
In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about how Jesus was tempted. (Yes, even Jesus was tempted!) Satan appeared to Him and tried to get Him to disobey God—not just once, but three times. Read the story to find out how Jesus answered him.

Matthew 4:1-11
One day, Jesus went to a quiet, lonely place in the desert. Jesus was getting ready to do important work for God. Jesus stayed in the desert for 40 days. He did not eat anything the whole time.
At the end of 40 days, God’s enemy, Satan, came to see Jesus. Satan wanted Jesus to do something that was wrong.
Satan knew Jesus was very hungry. Satan showed Jesus a stone. “If You want to, You can turn this stone into bread,” Satan said.
“No,” replied Jesus, “God’s Word says: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Satan did not give up. He took Jesus to the top of a very tall building. “You can prove to everyone You are God’s Son,” Satan said.
“If You jump off this building, angels will come and save You.” But Jesus again said no because in God’s Word it says: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Satan still did not give up. He took Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Jesus the whole world. “If You worship me instead of God, I will give You this whole world,” Satan said to Jesus.
Jesus said: “No! God’s Word says: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ ” Satan tempted Jesus, but Jesus did what was right.
Jesus obeyed God’s Word.

Hi kids!
When I was around six years old, I started swimming lessons. A lot of kids my age already knew how to swim, but I was nervous. At first, I did not want to go in the water. I sat on the edge of the swimming pool and practised kicking my feet. I asked lots of questions, asked for help when I needed it, and eventually I learned. Now I love swimming!
When we are learning, it is OK to ask questions. It’s the same when it comes to learning about Jesus. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about John the Baptist who had questions about Jesus.
If you don’t understand something about God, just ask. Many people at your church, such as your corps officer or youth leader, will be happy to tell you all about Him.

John and Jesus Matthew 11:1-6
J ohn was a follower of God. One day, he felt God calling him to become a preacher. He told the people of Israel that they should be baptized and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. Many people followed him and listened to his preaching.
John the Baptist was put in prison because of his preaching. When he heard about what Jesus was doing, he sent his disciples to Him. They asked Jesus, “Are You the Messiah? Or should we look for someone else?”
Jesus replied, “Go back to John and tell him what you hear and see. Blind people receive sight. Disabled people walk. People with
diseases are healed. Deaf people hear. Those who are dead are raised to life. And the good news is preached to the poor.”
