Hi kids! Happy new year! We’ve said goodbye to the awesome memories of 2023 and now we look forward to another great year ahead. At the start of a new year, many people choose to make resolutions, which are like goals. Maybe you want to try something new, test out a hobby or break a bad habit. Maybe there is an area you want to improve in, such as a skill or a hard subject at school.

In the Gospel of Matthew, God gives us two very important resolutions: to love Him with our whole hearts, and to love others as much as we love ourselves. So, as we kick off 2024, here are some ways that we can work together to achieve these goals: • Pray to God every day. • Read your Bible and Just for Kids to learn more about Jesus. • Be kind to others.

Did You Know? With different time zones all over the world, we don’t all ring in the new year at the same time. In fact, the first country to welcome the new year at midnight is a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Kiribati. Many people celebrate with different new year’s traditions. In Spain, they eat exactly 12 grapes at midnight to mark 12 more months of happiness. In Greece, they bake a small silver coin into a cake for good luck! Source: CBC Kids

Hi kids! Do you have any siblings? I grew up with an older sister. Sometimes it was hard to learn how to share with her. She always wanted the bigger slice of pizza, the cupcake with more frosting, the shinier bike and the cooler toys. Sometimes we fought about things until Mom sat us down and told us we needed to compromise. “Compromise” is a big word, but it’s an important lesson, especially when you have siblings. It means to listen to both sides and come to an agreement you are both happy with. A lot of the time it meant sharing—splitting the cupcake or slice of pizza, or taking turns riding the bike. In the Bible, Jesus teaches people about sharing and why it is important. As much as we might want to keep things for ourselves, it is much better to share, be kind and think about the needs of others. There are much more important things in life than just having lots of stuff.
The Rich Fool
Luke 12:13-21

n the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells a story about a very rich man. He had so many things—lots of food, grain and land. But he wanted more. Your friend, Abby So, he decided to build even bigger barns to store all his things. He thought to himself, “You have plenty of grain stored away for many years. Take life easy. Eat, drink and have a good time.”

But that same night, God told the rich man that he would not live much longer. The man could not take all his things with him to heaven. He realized he could not keep everything to himself forever. So, Jesus used this story to teach people about sharing with others and said to them, “Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has. “That is how it will be for whoever stores things away for themselves but is not rich in the sight of God,” Jesus said.

Help the ants find the colony.

Hi kids! Have you ever seen a hill of ants on the sidewalk in the summertime? Sometimes they travel in long lines gathering food and carrying it to their colony. This way, they have food to eat in the winter when it is cold and snowing. It’s amazing how hard they work. There’s a verse about ants in the Bible. It tells us that, like an army of small but mighty ants, we should work hard so that we are ready for the days to come. So, how can we be more like an ant? We can clean up our rooms, study to get good grades in school and choose to be helpful by cleaning dishes after dinner. We can pray every day, learn more about Jesus and treat others kindly. That’s the kind of hard work that God wants to see!

Ant Art
Did You Know? Despite their tiny size, ants are incredibly strong. In fact, a single ant can carry up to 50 times its own body weight, and they are even stronger together. Ants often work together to carry bigger and heavier objects as a group.

Hi kids! What’s your favourite board game? Mine is Scrabble. In Scrabble, each player gets seven letters randomly drawn from a bag. Then, with those letters, you create a word. Depending on how good your word is, you might score lots of points! The game can be hard sometimes, and you must choose your words wisely to score the most points. Life is kind of like Scrabble. Our words are very important— we can use them to help people, love people, be kind and bring joy, but if we are not careful, our words can hurt others. If we use good words that are kind, everybody wins!
