Meet Photographer Kai York
Hometown: New York City How did you get started? I started studying photography at university 15 years ago. Back then, I had no clue about how a camera works. But I knew that I wanted to do something creative. I couldn’t put my finger on it yet, but creating in general made me feel whole and I realized a classic 9-5 job at an office won’t make me happy in the long run. I flicked through the magazines of my parents and was fascinated by the emotions a photo can create. It seemed like magic to me, or a foreign language I didn’t understand. I was captivated. During my studies, I learned everything about the technique of photography, started taking on small photography jobs and had a small publication here and there. I sucked. I tried harder and grew, and still sucked,
before slowly getting better and eventually I got to know myself and understand my strengths. Also I focused more and more on what I really wanted to do. I was always intrigued by the powerful images of the fashion photography in the 90s. Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh,Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier all displayed women in a strong, fierce and unattainable way and elevated their beauty into a confident form. They appeared to be goddesses and would disarm the audience just by their appearance. That struck me as timeless, unattainable beauty and nothing less I want to show today.

Three adjectives to describe yourself. curious, critical, determined,

Your zodiac sign? Virgo If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? Fall of the Berlin Wall. What person, living or dead, would you love to photograph? Audrey Hepburn. Hands down. Living I would say Madonna without make up. Not to patronize her or put her down. But because I think she is an incredible figure, a living legend. And I think it would be a very strong, bold, beautiful statement, which is everything she stood for throughout her career. And I am not even a huge fan of her music. What country would you love to shoot in? Every single one. I love to explore new locations. But currently I am very intrigued by Japan and the Koreas. Last show you binge-watched? Rick and Morty
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Waking up without any worries, in a sphere of calm with someone next to you.

If you had the opportunity to meet any photographer, living or dead, who would it be? Peter Lindbergh and Herb Ritts
Favorite actor/actress? Ewan McGregor
Anything else you want the readers to know about you. Being creative is a lot of fun, but it is also incredibly exhausting. As artists we pour our hearts into every photograph we take until we are empty. It is important to find a pace that works well for you and don’t compare yourself to others to put pressure on yourself. But it is also equally important to stay inspired and to not get intimidated by other artists’ work. Especially in times where social media is displaying a false image of accomplishments to us every day. Listen inside of you. You know all the answers. 15 Follow Kai on Social Media IG: @kai.york.official SALYSÉ SEPT Website: www.kaiyork.com 2018
Meet Makeup Artist Daria Riabova Hometown: Saransk (Russia) How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I started about 4 years ago. I was participating in a dance show when the hired make up artist failed to come. Every participant had to do their own make up. I had natural skills, so everybody liked what I did with my face and some other girls asked me to help them. I agreed to do make up for a couple of girls and in the process of doing that the idea came to me: “I should do it on professional level”. I took some of my savings and went to Moscow to learn from the best in “Icon Face” make-up school and I fell in love with the profession.

Hometown: Queens, New York How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in a large family that consisted of 12 adults with 14 children (in the same house I might add) and getting ready for school or church was a more than just a mere task. And as you can imagine, with 8 girls, doing hair was probably the most difficult, so growing up we were taught at a young age how to braid. Me being the most eager to learn, I picked it up very quick. I began to do my own hair and the fascination began there. When asked “What do you want for Christmas?” I’d ask for the Barbie mannequin head just, so I could do her hair. Fast forward to high school; I was so into hairstyling that I would change my hairstyle every few days and my friends would ask me if I could do their hair and just like a wild fire it spread. Next thing I know I had people lining up at the lunch table waiting to get their 18 hair done during lunch time or even after school. Through college SALYSÉ ISEPT supported myself by doing hair. I 2018
then realized that Cosmetology is what I wanted to do full-time. I found myself not going to class because I had clients hair to do. Other than yourself, favorite hair artist/stylist? Why? Wow! There are too many to name, but a few stand out. Naeemah LaFond, Christina Beaty, Alonzo Arnold and Gillian Garcia. All four of these beautifully creative people are who I aspire to be like as a hair stylist/artist. Meet Stylist Guvanch Agajumayev
Hometown: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I am a 23 year old fashion stylist and editorial producer. I was born and raised in a small country in Middle Asia. Growing up, I always dressed «differently» than my peers. I dress to express myself, to tell a story, and to outwardly show others my mood. As a kid, I always dressed up my sister, mom, and barbie dolls. I felt different than other boys my age, a feeling that brought me insecurity and confidence somehow simultaneously. I dreamt of living in New York City, as I knew it would expose me to the world of fashion. I moved alone to New York when I was 19, and despite the uncertainties the destination held, my decision did not scare me. During my first days in New York, I walked around for hours and watched how people dressed. 20 SALYSÉ SEPT 2018
The streets were my personal museum. My styling journey began when I found Kevin Breen’s, a stylist and art director, Instagram account. I admired his work and felt that we shared a similar approach to styling and fashion. I decided to message Kevin on Instagram. After five minutes, I received a reply from Kevin, and we scheduled to meet over coffee the next day. I told him of my love for fashion, my background, and other personal stories. Kevin asked if I would be interested in assisting him in styling a photoshoot for PAPER Magazine. This was my first experience in working on a professional fashion editorial. Since then, Kevin and I have stayed close friends and have collaborated on other projects. I don’t know where I would be if I did not meet Kevin. I am very thankful to him. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Straightforward, Smart, and Hardworking
What do you enjoy the most about being a fashion stylist? I love to create, reinterpret, and show the designer a new perspective of their work. What do you not enjoy about being a fashion stylist? Being a fashion stylist is not a work for me, its part of my life style. I enjoy every part of it. Favorite designer? Why? I do not have favorite or least favorite designer. I believe each designer is unique and has a story behind their work. Favorite color? Rainbow Favorite food/drink? Drink- Ayran, Food- my mom’s food What person, living or dead, would you love to style for? Madonna, Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga, Beyonce
Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I see myself being published in every top magazine and producing a reality show centered around fashion. I see myself as happy and possibly married. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Perfect happiness is when you love what you do and live your life to the fullest. Your zodiac sign?
