Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the first issue of SALYSÉ magazine! Why another fashion/beauty magazine? The short answer, “Well, why not?“ The long answer— I founded SALYSÉ because I wanted to add a different voice to the beauty and fashion industry. A few years ago, a friend asked me to help her daughter develop a modeling portfolio. As I did my research, and looked at current magazines, figuring out what the trends of the moment were, I was a little disheartened and chagrined at the lack of diversity I saw in magazines. I’m a visual artist, so visual literacy has and always will be important to me. So, realizing that I could open up numerous magazines and not see one model of color from beginning to end, instead of getting angry, I decided to start with the woman in the mirror and try to make some changes. It is not my intent to uplift one group of people by denigrating another. It is my hope to level the playing field—so that everyone can be celebrated!

Let’s appreciate the beauty of humanity in all of it’s tones, shapes, and sizes. Fashion and beauty may seem a little superficial on the surface, but we are all “victims” of fashion, whether we want to be or not. No one leaves the house completely nude, unless they want to be arrested. We all make conscious decisions at some point on what pair of jeans, shirt, shoes we are (or are not) going to buy. Fashion is escapism. Everyone enjoys escaping into the dream of wearing that outfit, walking in those shoes, rocking that hair style, or trying that make-up look, not because our lives are so empty, but because they are so full!
