We do not seek to define beauty with one narrow idea, but with a myriad of viewpoints Vintage is right next to emerging designers, who are right next to established designers. We are looking for creatives who push the envelope, take chances, and disregard the status quo. SILVANA BEVILACQUA #fashion illustrator
About Silvan Bevilacqua I am a Vancouver illustrator with an Italian background, Australian husband, two Canadian children, a Border Collie, and a cat.
14 SALYSÉ Sept 2016
As well as publishing, over the years I have worked in graphics and packaging, fabric design, and cartooning. But illustration is my first love, including fashion illustration, and especially pictures for children. Whenever possible I use brilliant saturated colours and richly patterned textiles in my pictures. A sense of humour is nearly always an ingredient, too.

Meet Hair Stylist Latesha Hughes How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself When I was about 12 years old, I said I am either going to be a registered nurse, hair stylist, or nurse practitioner . I am 30 years old with a 12 year old son just trying to be the best mom and hairstylist I can be. Three adjectives to describe yourself. • very low key shy • humble • full of life Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I consider myself to be both. *Hair Artist comes out on set behind the scenes to create a vision with hair for the photographer. *Hair Stylist is on a daily basis when I work with my new and existing clients. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? I enjoy being able to be pushed to the max with my imagination and being able to meet new and exciting people on a daily basis and just [being] someone that people can really depend on. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Long hours of standing can be bad for your back and you might miss key points in your children’s life if you are a single parent. Other than yourself, favorite hair artist/stylist? Why? I have two favorite stylists; ones a man, Kalixto Balount; and ones a woman, Kearnna Stewart. These two gave me a story to always have in my mind for when I get weak. I watch these two struggle and strive for greatness. In the last year, I became a full time stylist. So, when I get weak I have two amazing success stories in my mind and behind my back pushing me. What hair trend do you love? I’m loving all the braids from all cultures. It makes the world look as if we are in peace. What hair trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? I wish Mohawks would leave this earth. lol Favorite color? Lilac Favorite food/drink? Favorite food is tilapia Favorite drink is anything that resembles a wine glass filled with it. lol 8) What person, living or dead, would you love to work with? I would love to work with my granny. She’s deceased. Her name was Erie Murray, and we have the same birthday. What would it be? A cooking show. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I see my name being a household name to hair whether I’m on stage talking to millions of people; behind the scenes on set; or, at Cole Stevens Salon. #savyy_chic will be known world-wide and have Hair Gawddddd attached to it. I’m claiming this! I also see me and my son traveling the world all because of mommie’s job duties.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Through it all just remain the same-- through the highs and the lows stay humble and respectful. It takes you a long way and is eternal bliss. Your zodiac sign? Aries What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I have no picks. I love people. What’s your favorite quote? “A dozen roses has twelve in it. Do you think that each rose has the time to watch another bloom? Flowers don’t watch others bloom they just blossom.“ Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would like for me and my son to take 14 days to travel around the world. I would like for him to have a chance to see all that life has to offer. What’s your theme song? “remy Ma - all the way up nothing can stop me “ What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? Best gift was a pair of shoes worth about $700. Worst gift was when I lost cash right before a baby shower and only had $25 to give. What an horrible embarrassing moment! What product is in your kit that you can not live without? Wella Thermal heat protector spray Favorite movie? “Matilda” Favorite actor/actress? Actress - Dakota Fanning. She’s a work in progress but a great one. Actor - Bruce Willis What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Just keeping faith when things seem as though they aren’t happening. This is always going to be a forever battle. I’m human and it’s life. Last book you read? Td Jakes “ Just Let it Go” Guilty Pleasure? Choclate candy. Last show you binge-watched? Downton Abbey Anything else you want the readers to know about you. I just want to make it, not for fame, but for the story. I want to give millions of people the courage that they lack and to see and know all journeys start off slow but it’s how long and hard you hang in. That is when you get that satisfaction!

Meet Model Janell Morton How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I did my first show in third grade. But I didn’t really know I wanted to do that at the time. So, I went from cheerleading to tennis to figure skating to dancing. Out of all of them I liked cheerleading the most. I felt obligated to choose, so I chose modeling because I wanted to be on the runway. I wanted to be the center of attention. That’s when I found Ms. Ann at Envision thanks to my cousin LaRen. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Superlative, Strong, Passionate Favorite color? Red and Purple Favorite food? Macaroni and Cheese What do you do when you are not modeling? Sleeping and going to classes. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I love how I can be myself and then be a different person. I love doing runway and I love being a part of people’s vision.
What’s your favorite quote? Winners focus on winning; losers focus on winners. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? My dream vacation would be going to Bora Bora with my boyfriend. Your zodiac sign? Aquarius Favorite superhero? Why? Captain America, well, because he’s cute and his dedication. What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? I admire a few people, but at the moment I’d like to say I admire my brother’s fiancée, Mercedes, the most. I’ve only known her for about 9 years but from what I’ve seen she’s such a strong person. Witnessing some of the things she’s been through; I’ve never seen her complain. What’s your theme song? “Fire and Desire” by Drake Favorite movie? Dead Pool
What do you not enjoy about modeling? I can’t do as many things as I would like to do, like other activities because they would just conflict with one another. I can’t always be with my friends or go on dates.
Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” Happiness: Being able to do whatever you want with whomever. Being carefree. Being able to fall in love, not just with your significant other but with yourself as well.
What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? It’s really hard to choose just one, but it’s between Laquan Smith, Vera Wang and Alexander Wang. I’ve always admired Vera Wang and Alexander Wang’s designs, I just thought that they were beautiful. I’m just now hearing about Laquan Smith and I feel that his designs are so unique and so me.
Misery: Not being able to be yourself. Not feeling loved or appreciated. Falling in love with the wrong person. Feeling like you’re not good enough or never will be good enough. Worrying about other people or worrying about what they think of you.
What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? I always wanted to work with Myles Loftin. I absolutely love his work and I think he’s amazing and versatile. He’s very professional at his age. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? 5 years from now I’ll be 24. I will have graduated from college and living with my boyfriend. I will be modeling in NYFW. I will get a chance to model for Victoria’s Secret and be in their annual Fashion Show.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Play the piano and tumbling. Anything else you want the readers to know about you? I am a queen; I am a golden girl; I am a care free black girl. It may seem like I’m great or even perfect to some people but it took a lot to get to where I am and who I am today. I want to thank a few of my friends and family that have helped mold me into the young woman I am today. I’m still a work in progress, I have a lot of things I need to work on, but, that’s what makes me, me.

I have always loved makeup since I was a little girl watching my mother do her makeup and wanting so bad to be able to do my own makeup. Meet Model Seneca Bryson How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. As a child, people told me I looked like a model. After years of it being suggested that I give modeling a try, I did! I’ve never looked back and am loving every minute. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? Every modeling job is different! I enjoy the evolving nature of the industry and the uniqueness of each experience. What do you not enjoy about modeling? Adhering to a strict and healthy diet. It can be a challenge, but it’s a necessity. What do you do when you are not modeling? I’m almost always listening to a podcast if I’m not doing something that requires my complete attention. Favorite color? Pastel purple. Favorite food? Anything toffee, coffee, caramel, or chocolate.
What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? My goal is to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. I hope to model for them in advertisements and walk in their runway shows. Getting to work for Victoria’s Secret would be a career-changer; they help girls enter the upper echelons of the modeling world. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? My dream vacation is to go on a snorkeling tour of several reefs around the world. So far, my list includes those in the Maldives, Bali, Belize, and Australia, but I’m sure I will add to it as time goes on. Your zodiac sign? I’m a Scorpio. What’s your favorite quote? “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” -Evelyn Beatrice Hall Last show you binge-watched? “Son’s of Anarchy” and “Grey’s Anatomy”...at the same time. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I know this isn’t possible, but I would teach myself to have a photographic memory. Here’s to hoping, I suppose! Guilty Pleasure? I love getting a massage. Your idea of “happiness”? For me, “happiness” means achieving my goals.

Meet Hair Artist Lauryn Elizabeth How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. Well the passion started really early for me. I remember when I was young, after my mom left for work, and before catching the bus, I would go into her bathroom and play with makeup. Thinking back, I really wish I had photos of that. I would surely bet it was a sight to see. Professionally, I started out doing makeup for a photographer friend that needed someone for a pinup project. I later found a mentor through networking on social media. That mentor (Angel Jagger) introduced me to hairstyling and I learned and worked under her for over a year on pinup/boudoir photo shoots. Nowadays I do hair and makeup for weddings as well and being able to offer both services is very rewarding and challenging.
What’s your favorite quote? This is a tough one to pick just one. But this one speaks to me quite a bit so we’ll go with this one! “Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Rob Siltanen (Apple Advertising)
Three adjectives to describe yourself. Resilient, creative, and intuitive.
What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? Best gift: My boyfriend surprised me with a trip to NYC for my 30th birthday. I’ve never been and cannot wait! We’re going in October this year! Favorite movie? “Love Actually”
What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Stylist? I love the creative aspect of hair and creating something to make a vision come to life. It’s constantly working with different textures and colors which really challenges you. It’s amazing what you can create when you’re challenged! I also really love being a part of the team to make something happen. Being on set makes my heart so happy! What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Stylist? The back pain from standing all the time. Ha! Favorite food/drink? Chips and queso should be considered a food group. What hair trend do you love? Vivid colors and pastels. In general, I love that people are embracing that hair color doesn’t have to be just the normal colors anymore. And I also love that “unnatural” colored hair is becoming more common/acceptable in the corporate workplaces too. What product is in your kit that you can not live without? Teasing brush and texture spray. You can do a lot with those two items!
Guilty Pleasure? I have a strange affinity with researching how much (expensive) items/clothes cost. If I go to a concert, I’ll search online to find an outfit the artist is wearing to see how much it costs. I’ll see a picture of a handbag and find it online to see what it costs, knowing I’ll doubtfully ever purchase the lavish item for myself. So strange. There’s just something about the outlandishly priced items that intrigue me. Last show you binge-watched? “Criminal Minds” Anything else you want the readers to know about you. I’ve been lucky enough to spend time working with other creative individuals and have learned so much about myself and my craft. I admire the passion of this industry and working with people so full of passion is inspiring. I appreciate that in a world that makes us all feel like we have to fit the the mold, there are people out there to challenge and break that mold. Never accept 131 complacency and keep learning!

Meet Fashion Stylist Michelle O’Reagan How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I began my affair with styling after assisting other models and planning own shoots and doing some personal stylist work that involved organizing outfits for individuals at their homes. I had also brought my fashion line, House of O’Reagan, to a higher level and really gotten into the look book and photo shoot magazine features each season. My first professional styling gig was a wedding and engagement shoot in the Bywater, New Orleans for an out of town photographer to feature in print ads and at wedding shows. Bridal work was new to me, but I’m so glad I took the chance and got some amazing results. Three adjectives to describe yourself. inventive, eclectic, experimental What do you enjoy the most about being a fashion stylist? Being a fashion stylist, or at least the lead stylist as I have done so far, is challenging and eye-opening. At times it can be similar to creative direction or artistic direction which I have done for films. Like the photographer and other members of the team, you coax an idea from pure mental abstraction to physical reality. I love being on location and discovering new exotic spots and working with tempermental mother nature. I also love the sense of accomplishment when you realize a concept with vintage or hand-crafted clothing that may have never been seen before by the public. In addition, having a flexible schedule is really important as I pursue teaching and fashion design also. What do you not enjoy about being a fashion stylist? For many shoots, such as the editorial featured here, the stylist is dependent on the designers to a certain degree. This means the reputation and success of the endeavor depends on the reliability of the amazing people she works with on that particular project. I am very independent and this can be difficult, but as I enjoy working with a large team and the tremendous potential of so many viewpoints, I think the process is magical and addictive in all the right ways. Favorite designer? Why? My all time favorite designer is Alexander McQueen. He takes risks and creates masterpieces that tell a story like a novel or five act play on or off the runway. My favorite living designer is Ulyana Sergeenko whose attention to unexpected detail and form pay homage to the beautiful history of Russia. One of the most refreshing designers I have worked with is Pachamama Bohemian who creates comfortable, wearable clothing which use vintage and international fabric and details in creative ways.
What person, living or dead, would you love to style for? Bjork What would it be? Styling for Bjork would be a dream job. Bjork creates whole new worlds when she parts her lips and I attempt to do the same when I combine the work of haute couture designers. Not only are our philosophies similar, our gravitation toward creativity and theatrical garments would be unstoppable. I would style a red carpet look for Bjork utilizing a sleek shark-skin like fabric or translucent jelly fish inspired quality as I connect her strongly with the element of water. I would accompany the look with jewelry on the forefront of technology like her music, such as miniature terrarium necklace or an orb with glowing underwater creatures. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I hope to be living full time on a sail boat I discovered in Maine and then I hope to work as a designer and stylist more internationally. What fashion trend do you love? I really like the current obsession with lucite heels or illusion heels. What fashion trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? I wish the trend of giant gash rips on jeans would evaporate. Favorite movie? What Dreams May Come, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Favorite actor/actress? Noomi Rapace Last show you binge-watched? I don’t watch too much T.V., but I definitely got sucked into “Marco Polo”, though I’m not sure if the second season attained the first season’s glory. I found the show extremely exciting as a fashion and costume designer. Every look is authentic, elegant, and other-worldly. Last book you read? I’m finishing the “Gold Finch” by Donna Tartt. The book is like reading a classic as it is so sweeping, universal, and masterful with language but at the same time it is completely rooted in dialogue, setting, and attitude in the current day in cities like N.Y. and Las Vegas. 133 SALYSÉ Sept 2016

Meet Stylist Leonid Gurevich How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I started when I was 5 years old by becoming my mother’s apprentice. She used to embroider costumes for the Bolshoi Theatre. When I was 12, I saw Thierry Mugler’s designs in George Michael’s “Too Funky” video for the first time, and I instantly knew where I needed to be and what I needed to do. I went to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City right after moving to the States. I transitioned from being a designer; to becoming a stylist; to becoming a photographer; because that way I feel I am bringing my vision to life without watering it down and without the unnecessary compromises. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Words cannot describe. What do you enjoy the most about being a fashion stylist? Working with beautiful designer’s pieces, putting them on beautiful models, multiplying beauty, contributing to saving the world, in a nutshell. What do you not enjoy about being a fashion stylist? I don’t enjoy – and that’s putting it mildly - how careless the fashion industry is with crediting designers for all their hard work. Favorite designer? Why? Manish Arora, because his designs inspire one to want to live life to the fullest.
Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Styling, photographing, producing, travelling the world– exactly what I’m doing now, but on an even bigger scale. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I want to go to Australia to play with the kangaroos. What’s your favorite quote? One of my own - “The envelope is not gonna push itself.” What’s your theme song? Right now I cannot get enough of the StyleZo (Kadondo) by Eddie Kenzo, especially with the video of the Ghetto Kids dancing to it. Guilty Pleasure Crème Brulee Your zodiac sign? Gemini What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? Aries and other Geminis. Frankly, I don’t have a problem getting along with anybody. Everyone has their own ‘isms’ and everyone has something great to bring to the table. Last show you binge-watched? “Stranger Things”
What fashion trend do you love? Man bun hair for it being a perfect merge of Samurai and medieval warrior styles. Hope it never goes away. Also, the updated 1970’s style - what Alessandro Michele created for Gucci. I love that.
Best gift you received or have given? Tickets to Madonna’s concert that my sister got us.
What fashion trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? Square manicure (ugh), oval elbow patches on mens blazers, and most importantly the trend of talentless people building a world-dominating empire from a single sex tape. These trends I would love to see die, not a slow death however, but a quick one, because this insanity has been dragging on for too long already as is.
Favorite movie? I’ll name three: “Overboard”, “Death Becomes Her”, and “Big Business”.
What person, living or dead, would you love to style for. I would have loved to style Salvador Dali. There was not a single object he wouldn’t experiment with. Favorite color? Red. Favorite food? Beef Negimaki dipped in ginger dressing. OH YES.
Last book you read? “Adam’s Diary” by Mark Twain. Brilliant.
Favorite actor/actress? Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard. If you could throw any kind of party, what would it be like and what would it be for? It would be a fun party to introduce all my single friends to each other in the most nonchalant, playful way. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Waking up, seeing Ludwig, my golden doodle puppy’s face, who gets on his back paws to say, “Good Morning”. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. Easiest way to make me like you is to spell my full name properly. LOL

Meet Make Up Artist Heiddis Ros Reynisdottir How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself I was 18 years old when I decided to attend a make up school in my country Iceland after seeing an article in the newspaper. I have always been a very artistic person and it runs in my family. After make up school, I was hired by Mac cosmetics and that’s where I learned most of my creativity along with my own skills. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Determined, creative, caring. What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? I love the fact that I get to meet a lot of people and different characters; work in different locations; and let my imagination flow among other creative people. What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? Sometimes it is hard being on set especially if you don’t get along with the other people on set. And sometimes a shoot can take way to long and that’s the only downfall but it will pay off in the end when you see the amazing results in a printed magazine :) Other than yourself, favorite make up artist? Why? Pat McGrath is one of my favorite make up artists and she does a lot of the campaigns and runway shows for the biggest brands. I like her imagination and creativity and she always seems to amaze me each year. What make up trend do you love? I love a good highlight and contour. It can do plastic surgery on your face without going under the knife. What make up trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? I guess I’m not a big fan of black lipstick unless it’s for an editorial in a magazine. What product is in your kit that you can not live without? My contouring and highlighting kit from Anastasia Beverly Hills. What person, living or dead, would you love to work with? I would love to work with some of the legends, but I think when it comes to make up and fashion I would have loved to work with Alexander McQueen and the famous legendary make up artist Kevyn Aucoin. What would you create? I would probably create an avante garde look that shows my creativity and skills. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I see myself as a better known make up artist; my work in the most popular magazines; maybe I will have my own make up school; and maybe my own make up line that’s always been the ultimate dream. Guilty Pleasure? I would say guilty pleasure would be cheese. I love a good cheese with a nice wine. Favorite color? My favorite color is pink and gold and I love mixing these two colors into amazing eye make up and I often do it on myself. Last show you binge-watched? “Orange is the New Black”
What is your idea of perfect happiness? I look at my life and know that I’m happy. My career is blossoming; I’m surrounded by people that I love, and love me; and my financial status allows me to be able to travel, see, and do things. Your zodiac sign? I’m your typical Aries-- stubborn, artistic and a social butterfly. I can go anywhere and I will meet people. What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I tend to bring people into my life from the zodiac signs Libra and Cancer. And so far it has worked out well. What’s your favorite quote? Be yourself, don’t listen to people that put you down, and show them what you are made of. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would like to go to Italy and Paris and visit all the major locations for fashion. What’s your theme song? I don’t think I have any theme song, but lately on my snapchat I have played the song “How Deep is Your Love” by Calvin Harris. Favorite food/drink? I like a good medium rare steak at a good steak house and a nice Macallan. But my mom’s home cooked meal is always good to have and since she is living far away I miss it from time to time. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I think the best gifts I have received are some of the gifts that my sisters have made for me. Favorite movie? I’m a sucker for chick flicks and I guess one of my favorite movies is “Pretty Woman” because I’ve watched it a hundred times and I still love it. Favorite actor/actress? Julia Roberts has been my favorite for a long time and Bette Midler has a lovely personality. Last book you read? I read a lot of fashion motivational books. I’m not a big reader if it’s not a book like that. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. I would like to tell everyone if you have a dream turn it into goal, work on the goal, and it might become a reality. I’m living proof of it. I moved to this country six years ago not knowing anyone or speaking a word of English. Now I have had my work published in a number of magazines, done a couple of cover shoots, done red carpets, music videos and more fun projects. When I started, I had a lot of people hating on me and telling me I couldn’t do things. But now all of these people are back in my home country, Iceland, looking at me living my dream. So, never give up! :) I’m just getting started You can watch my journey on my social media: Instagram: @hrosmakeup Snapchat: hrosmakeup
