Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, Have you ever been in a position where it hurts to laugh? About eight weeks ago, on November 8, 2016 I had an open myomectomy to remove fibroids that had become debilitating. Yes, I did “endure” the election results through the haze of some heavy-duty narcotics. I’m a fairly private person, so sharing this info feels a little awkward, but the more I talked to the women in my network, the more stories I heard of friends, mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousins who had the same condition. I realized I was not alone, and that was very comforting. Women’s health does not need to be whispered about behind closed doors. If I have to be subjected to ED commercials on a regular basis, then why should anyone be afraid to talk about a uterus?

So, if by sharing my story, I can encourage one woman reading this letter to schedule that doctor’s appointment they have been putting off, or have that test done that they have been dreading, then it will be worth it. Looking at the surgery in hindsight, I have a few realizations. Do it afraid. Rely on your support system. Don’t rush the recovery. Laugh, even though it hurts. Thank God for Obama Care! Do it afraid. When they mention all the complications, start asking about living wills, and power of attorney, weigh all your options and do what is best for you. Find the best surgeon and do it even if you are afraid! Rely on your support system. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. During my recovery I sometimes didn’t want to ask for help because I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. Your network is willing to help. You just have to ask.

Don’t rush the recovery. There is a reason they give you a timeline before you can return to “normal activities.” You just had your abdomen sliced open, life is not going to be normal for a while. Every time I overdid it, I paid for it the next day. Laugh, even though it hurts. Pretty self-explanatory. I think laughter is the best medicine. Thank God for Obama Care! I’m very thankful to President Barack Obama for caring about affordable healthcare for all. And now back to the fashion. As always, I hope you enjoy your escape. Meet Photographer Natasha Hayes How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I can’t entirely remember when I started taking photography seriously. I always remember being in love with art because I started out drawing and painting and transitioned to doing those things digitally with a Wacom tablet and pen during my early middle school years. I created little animations and drawings in Photoshop from an early age of ten years old (I’m twenty three now). Somehow that led to an obsession with filmmaking in early high school. I think I really started to use a camera when I began attending college concurrently and broke away from just painting. I currently work as the only graphic designer/photographer at my company which fits me pretty well because I think of myself as a Jack-of-all-trades. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative, Ambitious, Competitive What do you enjoy the most about photography? That there are so many ways to break the boundaries, and that I am always combining different aspects of my skillset. I like the idea of meshing reality with my own dreams. What do you not enjoy about photography? My slowly worsening eyesight. Favorite color? It used to be some kind of aqua color, but then a friend of mine said she was pretty sure my favorite color was ‘glitter’. I agreed and it’s been that way ever since. Favorite food/drink? I like Katsu Curry more than any other food in the world. What person, living or dead, would you love to photograph? Hard question. Sometimes I think I would have liked to photograph my grandpa.
What country would you love to shoot in? Way too many options, I would love Japan, maybe Scotland but I think the most versatile place might be New Zealand. I think I could do a lot there. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being able to create and imagine every second of the day without limitation. Of course with those that are closest to me. Your zodiac sign? Sagittarius. Fun fact, my husband and I have the same birthday (Dec 9th), but he’s three years older. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I’d really like to see Japan and visit my family there. Some of my favorite vacations have been cross country. I’ve never taken an airplane but I have seen almost every state in the U.S. that you can access by car. What’s your theme song? The Legend of Zelda theme song of course. My husband and I had our grand entrance to it at our wedding, and I got to hold a sword. Favorite movie? Pirates of the Caribbean Favorite actor/actress? I don’t have a favorite actor, but my favorite singer is Josh Turner. I love the values that he sings about. Favorite superhero? Why? Superman, he always has been. I like the ideals that he represents, and I feel like I’m such an optimistic person that his persona matches mine over the others. What is your favorite word? Least favorite? The word that comes to mind is effervescent or enigmatic. I don’t know that I have a least favorite word.
What was the last picture you took with your phone? Probably a photo of some product packaging at work. I don’t take a lot of photos with my phone. If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? There is a really cool scene in the actual first book of the Chronicles of Narnia Guilty Pleasure? I can’t say that I really have a guilty pleasure. Probably the closest thing would be that I buy too many e-books. Last show you binge-watched? I’ve been watching a lot of those Netflix Marvel shows. But I go through TV shows fast because I have a dual monitor system and I tend to watch shows while I edit. Sometimes I will actually leave movies or music videos playing on one screen that have a similar color scheme to the images I am working on or have a similar mood. Last book you read? I actually am a really big fan of a lot of ‘children’s’ books, so maybe that is my guilty pleasure. I’ve been reading a lot of the Percy Jackson books and I’m thinking about rereading Harry Potter. I also recently started reading the last Game of Thrones book that came out, and Lord of the Rings. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. When I get into a creative funk, I find that moving tends to pull me out of it. For the last three or four years I have rediscovered a lot of my creative energy by teaching linedancing. For people who don’t know what it actually is, it sounds like dancing in a barn. Actually, we have a lot of dances to hip hop music and it’s relatively fast paced. If you get a chance, you should definitely try it. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s actually pretty easy once89 you learn the basics. SALYSÉ JAN 2017
Meet Cover Model Janaya Collier How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I started modeling a few years ago when I lived in Canada. I was scouted at the mall, funny I know, but very true! I was always told I should model growing up but I didn’t have the self esteem to follow through. Once I was scouted, I was still very nervous during my photoshoots, but eventually I learned that confidence is key. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Outgoing, adventurous, caring What do you enjoy most about modeling? I love feeling free and modeling allows me to feel that way. What do you not enjoy about modeling? There’s nothing I don’t enjoy about modeling. I love it! Favorite color? Pink Favorite food? Spicy Thai food What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? Balmain!! Olivier Rousteing is my favorite designer and the way his designs come to life on the runway is absolutely stunning! What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? Russell James!! The way he showcases a woman’s natural beauty is amazing. His talent is impeccable. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself married! Having a family is very important to me. I also love modeling and photography so it would be a dream to have my own business doing both. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would love to go to Bora Bora!! For obvious reasons! What is your zodiac sign? Aquarius Favorite Superher? Why? Superman because of his incredible strength.
What is your favorite quote? “Do good and good will come to you.” Guilty Pleasure? My love for ice cream, Gelato specifically. What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? My mother. I admire my mom because of everything she has been through and her tough spirit. What’s your theme song? “Lotus Flower” by Radiohead What is your favorite body part? Legs! What do you do when you are not modeling? I am naturally an old soul so I love to relax, read and eat! Favorite movie? Parent Trap Favorite actor/actress? My favorite actor is Matt Damon and my favorite actress is Sandra Bullock. Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” My idea of happiness is being able to help others. I genuinely enjoy making other people happy. My idea of misery is not being able to express myself. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would learn to play the piano. Meet Model Anna Sadashi Li How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I am a technical writer for a research lab that does not allow for much creativity and art, so I wanted to find a creative outlet to fulfill my life. I always loved fashion, art, and beauty, but did not know how to get myself into the industry. Eventually, I found myself modeling for a few local photographers, but my modeling didn’t really take off until I met other model friends at a runway show at TJ Fashion Week earlier this year. I made new friends and built up my network of fashion photographers, stylists, and designers from there on. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Motivated. Adventurous. Bold. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? Modeling for me is about feminine empowerment. I want to showcase the beauty of the human form and our genetic makeup in a hyperrealistic statement of sophistication and prestige. Beauty is captivating and powerful. I want to let the world know that. What do you not enjoy about modeling? Sometimes I will commit to a photoshoot and another model or photographer will back out at the last minute, which can be frustrating at times. Favorite color? Mauve Favorite food? Fruit Tarts What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? Chanel. The collections exude class and sophistication. The Chanel Brand was what really brought women’s fashion to the forefront. Chanel allowed women to make statements at work and become empowered.

He captures the most intriguing moments in life. His photos are sexy, dreamy, and intoxicating. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? I want to transition my career into becoming an artistic director for photoshoots and editorials. I have so many ideas and visions that I want to bring to life and share with the world.
What is your favorite body part? My legs. It’s funny, they used to be my biggest insecurity. I have grown to embrace their strength. What do you do when you are not modeling? Writing, reading, and dreaming. Favorite movie? Life is Beautiful. There is no other movie that has moved me so and reminds me of the importance of love, hope, and endurance. Favorite actor/actress? Meryl Streep- her range is just amazing. Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” “Happiness” is inner contentment. “Misery” is inner conflict. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Learn how to speak every language in the world.
Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? One day I will hike the Swiss Alps! I love nature and adventure!

Meet Model Carla Nicholson How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I was an actor for four years, then I transitioned into modeling in 2016. I find I am able to transfer many of my acting skills over into modeling-- taking direction, creating an authentic moment, expressivity, courage to take risks, playing off of the energies of others, and so much more. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Tall, brunette, brown-eyed

What do you enjoy the most about modeling? Looking at the final photos and seeing the team’s hard work pay off.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I played the viola for four years, but I would love to learn to perfect the art of playing the viola.
What do you not enjoy about modeling? Cold and bug bites while shooting outdoors, but they tend to feel worth it when seeing the finished product.

Meet Fashion Designer Tanya Jenkins How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I named my company “Nea Eshe.” It was a name my mom and I had always wanted to name a daughter if I ever had a girl. At that time I was no longer trying to have any more kids, so I thought why not let this company be my “baby girl”. The name is a way to spell a Cheyenne word that means “thank you”… so I started teaching myself how to make feather earrings and create different unique ways to showcase them. It was important for customers to know that these are my creations and not store bought. At first, I only made 50 pairs. My youngest son was helping me with the colors and family/friends were promoting me by wearing them when they went out. This was making me happy again and making some of the issues of heartache disappear because once I started designing I was locked into it. Creating was therapeutic. I kept creating more and have not stopped. I have now expanded my brand to include hats, clothes, shoes, bracelets, necklaces, shoulder pieces and more.
What do you not enjoy about fashion design? Not having a second opinion, when you are just by yourself, it’s drives you crazy and you start second guessing yourself. I used to be a hairstylist and I would try different hairstyles on myself, so to get a second opinion I would go to the mall and see how people would react. I still do that with my accessories but with clothes I am scared too…. Favorite fabric you ever worked with? I believe I am very addicted to denim, hahaha, I just can’t leave it out of any collection.
Three adjectives to describe yourself. Courageous, shy, different What do you enjoy the most about fashion design? Breaking the rules, being free to design whatever I want and seeing people love it, and then want it. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Seeing the world and accomplishing your dreams while being lucky enough to share it with people you love by your side.
Favorite color? Cyan. This color is a mixture between electric blue and teal, also it is easy to make into white if you go lighter. A very versatile color. Favorite food/drink? My favorite drink is Big Red and Sweet Tea. My favorite food is Chinese food (chicken fried rice and pepper steak). Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? Fiji and Brazil are my biggest dream spots; I will get there one day. Last show you binge watched? Empire and Lucifer
What person, living or dead, would you love to create a design for? What would it be? Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and Elizabeth Taylor. My own sign, it’s like I know a Pisces so well when I chat awhile with someone I have never met before. It’s really weird and crazy how that happens. If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor? The women in my family (my mom, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, cousins, best friends) are my mentors. They have each been through hell and back while still standing on top the world. By being a witness to some of the issues I saw while growing up, I kept the outcomes in my head and heart to always stay strong like they did. These are my women warriors, I will never forget or stop loving them, and no one will ever take the power of them away from me. What is your favorite time of day/ day of the week/month of the year? I am a night breed… ha-ha...I love Fridays because it means I can sleep in and don’t have to wake up or take anyone to school or work. March, it’s my birthday month, so that is when I buy things for me only. Favorite fashion era--20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s? Why? This is soooo hard…. Each era has inspired me to be the designer I am now. Thinking of how denim got started; flappers; Coco Chanel; Audrey Hepburn; classic pin up girls; Zoot suits; and the Old Hollywood Glam; also how women showed men they can build and survive. And then rhythm and blues (R&B); greasers to Motown; Hip Hop and disco; Graffiti to breakdancing; Cindy Lauper; Prince; Michael and Janet Jackson; mix of rap and R&B; female singing groups and Rappers like: Wu-tang, Busta Rhymes, and more…. I am pretty sure you get it, ha. Last book you read? Don’t judge, but I am not a big book reader. I can’t really remember; I do know it was about an artist or designer because that would be the only thing I would read about. I do read a lot of articles in different magazines when I have time to myself and that last magazine was Vision & Justice.
Favorite superhero? Why? Wonder Woman, I grew up watching her show and thinking that my mother was her. Mom had the skin complexion with long pretty jet black that she would slick back into a ponytail when she would work during the day, the average jane…. ha, and then at night her sisters and she would go out sometimes, they would transform into some glamourous, stylish, cover models. I soooo wanted to be them. Each of them had different styles, and they handmade what they wore. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. Well, I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio but I lived in San Diego, California with 2 kids for a long time. I grew up around two hard working families that loved, worked and lived a fashion life. I have never met my father, but his dad, my grandfather stayed in my life. I got to follow him around a lot in a men’s clothing store in Cleveland that he owned and worked at. On my mom’s side, oh my god, my mother and 5 sisters all sewed and made a little hobby business of their own by making wedding gowns, prom dresses, suits, and just about anything. I did have an aunt who made clothes for Gerald Levert. Even my older cousins (that I called aunts) did something in fashion. When I was little hanging out at the Macy’s, J.C. Penny’s and fabric stores was a normal day. A lot of relatives in my generation became hairstylists, but I am the only one who followed my aunts. I hope more in the next generation will work in fashion- maybe one of my son’s will.
Meet Make Up Artist Michelle Lara How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself I am 28 years old, born and raised in San Diego CA . I am married and have 3 children. I’ve always wanted to be a makeup artist. It all started when I would watch my mother apply her makeup, she took her time and perfected that winged liner. I found it amazing, exciting, artistic and that’s where it all began. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Passionate, Ambitious, Sophisticated What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? The most enjoyable thing about being a make up artist is creating or enhancing a person’s appearance. Whether it be natural beauty and making them feel the most beautiful, or something edgy and different. The outcome! What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? One thing I don’t enjoy doing is letting a client know that everything they see on the internet is not all real. I will do my best to to give you the best you! What is your idea of perfect happiness? My idea of perfect happiness, is to be able to do what I love and never work a day in my life. Be surrounded by positive loving people and my family.
