Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, I had a vision. I had a vision that a group of creative women could join forces, put ego aside, and in the spirit of sisterhood create something beautiful, magical, powerful, but most of all relevant. 15 WOMEN 6 HOURS 1 BEACH On a cold late winter, early, early spring day in April, my vision came to

hope others will take time to see Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust, one of the first full-length feature movies to be directed by an African American woman, and which Lemonade drew inspiration from. I wanted to honor the past, celebrate the present moment (movement), and most of all build for the future. Dressed in white like the original suffragettes, these proud women stand in formation and in solidarity to show that there is strength in numbers during these tumultous times. Thank you for your support! As always, I hope you enjoy your escape.

Meet Stylist Keri Henderson
What do you enjoy the most about being a fashion stylist? I love that every styling job is different. Each job presents a new opportunity to be creative in a way I may not have ever been before. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I will be running my styling business in Los Angeles with clientele that includes entertainers, fashion and sports brands and designers. I will also have a non-profit organization that hosts yearly events to benefit those in the community. What’s your favorite quote? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6 What fashion trend do you love? Although this isn’t necessarily a trend this year, I love pairing fashionable sneakers with dresses. Favorite movie? Can I have more than one? Some of my favorites include: Sister Act 2 and Love & Basketball
If you could throw any kind of party, what would it be like and what would it be for? I would throw a 90s themed party for an upcoming birthday. Last show you binge-watched? So Cosmo on E! Last book you read? Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae Best gift you received or have given? For my best friend’s 30th birthday, I gifted her with an expense paid trip to Puerto Rico. Meet Model Aida Gueye How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I started modeling about two years ago. I got into it because people from all over would randomly approach me and ask me if I modeled. I was stubborn at first because modeling was something I never thought about pursuing. Then, I decided to take chance “for fun” and it took off from there. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Yikes. I’d say ambitious. Personable. Independent. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? What I enjoy about modeling is the fact that I am able to get in touch with different sides of myself! I think it is so important to truly learn who you are. I have learned so much about myself since I began modeling. What do you not enjoy about modeling? What I don’t enjoy about modeling is that as a melaninated model, I come across situations where people do not know how to work with my skin nor do they understand how to translate my features on film. But I always say to myself, no opportunity is a wasted one! You learn and you move on. Favorite color? Yellow Favorite food? I love African food! I would definitely say Djollof rice from Senegal. What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? I’d love to walk for Tsemaye Binitie in New York Fashion Week. His clothes are so elegant and bold. Who would you love to shoot with? I have so many favorites. Definitely Edward Enninful, the newest editor in chief of British Vogue.
Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? This is a question I ponder about almost every day. One thing about me is that I am always strategic. I am always thinking ahead and trying to put myself in positions to reach my goals. The honest answer to this question is, “I don’t know.” I enjoy the corporate world, as I am currently working in the forensics field. I also enjoy Human Resources which is what I am currently getting my master’s degree in. But I also enjoy modeling! I know at some point, I am going to have to make a choice and I pray on that every often. Ultimately, I just want to live my purpose in happiness. That’s the most important thing!
What’s your theme song? “Formation” by Beyoncé. Every time I listen to it, I feel empowered.
Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I literally have screenshots of all of the places I’d like to travel to. Gosh, there are so many beautiful places in this world! I’d love to go to Asia and South Africa.
Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” My idea of happiness is to live in your purpose while helping others either find theirs or motivate them.
Your zodiac sign? Gemini Favorite superhero? Why? I would say my mom. I love her to pieces. She is so selfless! What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? Besides my parents who I love, I would say Beyonce. She is absolutely amazing. Other than her music, I am really drawn to her work ethic and how she uses her platform to motivate young women like myself. I learn a lot through her songs including the value of hard work. I also love Lupita Nyongo and how stunning and intelligent she is! What’s your favorite quote? “I dream it, I work hard, I grind till I own it” -Beyoncé
What is your favorite body part? I like my lips. What do you do when you are not modeling? When I am not modeling, I am either working, finishing assignments or being social somewhere. Favorite movie? Get Out has definitely climbed its way to my top list. Favorite actor/actress? Viola Davis
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would learn how to speak another language. Probably an Asian language. Guilty Pleasure? Rice Last book you read? Matthew Kelly’s Resisting Happiness Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Hey guys! I want to say thank you to all of those who continue to support me. I didn’t necessarily see myself pursuing modeling at all and I think the positive feedback I have received, helped me to excel, so thank you! The journey continues. I am not sure what is in store, but you won’t be disappointed! Follow Aida on Instagram @aida_tmodel

Three adjectives to describe yourself. Tenacious, creative and unstoppable.
What’s your favorite quote? “I don’t chase them, I replace them.”
What do you enjoy the most about modeling? The art, the traveling, the people.
Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” My idea of pure happiness is living in a world where all living things can be free, happy and at peace. I believe happiness is a place where pettymindedness can be overshadowed with living in the present and making the future an even better place for our children. Misery is a world where living creatures have the intent to harm others and excuse harm happening to others.
What do you not enjoy about modeling? The institutional racism that has been around since the beginning- it still affects us today. Favorite food? Depends on my mood. Your zodiac sign? Aquarius/Pisces cusp!
Last book you read? Black Wings of Cthulhu 4, edited by S.T. Joshi Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Chef for 4.5 years of my life. Follow Alexis on Instagram @missalexissequoiadouglas

Meet Model Christiane
How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I started modeling my freshman year at Howard in the homecoming fashion show. I met some great people there who worked with me and encouraged me to keep going. Modeling is kind of the last thing I thought I’d be doing, even though I’d always wanted to, because I’m introverted and really shied away from the spotlight growing up. Your zodiac sign? Capricorn
What do you enjoy the most about modeling? Modeling always takes me out of my comfort zone, and I love being a part of a creative vision.
Favorite food? Oh this is hard, I love food. Any form of pasta. I also really love cornbread dressing. And peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, strawberry only.
What do you not enjoy about modeling? It can be so tiring, and it can be difficult to book gigs as a freelance model.
What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? RIght now, FENTYxPUMA. It’s so 90s grunge meets the modern world and the modern girl. And Alexander McQueen.
Favorite color? Purple!
What’s your theme song? “The Wilhelm Scream” by James Blake
J.O.A crochet top; Alice & Olivia lace pants.
Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I’d love to go to Italy, for the food and the art. What is your favorite body part? I guess this is more of a feature but I have a mole above my left eye that I love. What do you do when you are not modeling? Cooking (and eating). Favorite movie? Disney’s Cinderella
Favorite actor/actress? Right now it’s Meryl Streep. Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery”? Happiness - contentment and peace no matter what the circumstance. Misery - not knowing one’s purpose in life. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I’d love to be a better visual artist. So drawing, painting, sculpture, etc. And I really want to learn to play the guitar by ear.
Last show you binge-watched? 13 Reasons Why. It’s an amazing series and it touches on some very serious issues. Last book you read? I think it was The Lovely Bones.

Meet Model How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I began modeling about 5 years ago. One month after graduating from medical school, I was diagnosed with cancer. Modeling was something that I had always wanted to do, but in years prior I made the commitment of putting school and my career first. After my surgeries and being deemed cancer free, I contacted a friend from high school and a reputable photographer, James Anthony and asked to collaborate on a few shoots. It’s been history since. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Timeless, confident, humble. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I like the production, the collaboration aspect with the team involved (i.e. photographer, MUA, hairstylist, etc.) all for the greater good of an amazing outcome. I also enjoy the ability to tell a story with the angles and direction of my shoots. Getting the “money shot” is always exciting to me, as in getting that one shot that screams, that’s the one! What do you not enjoy about modeling? Not applicable, lol. I see everything as a leaning experience, and ways to improve myself and my performance with time. Repetition is the path to mastery. Favorite color? Green
Favorite food? Kontomire stew with plantain. I am actually from Ghana, which is where I was born. I came to the US at age 5. What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? Yeezy Season, (of course). I am and have always been a huge Kanye West fan, lowkey, or maybe highkey, so naturally I support his movement. Your zodiac sign? Taurus, but I promise I’m not stubborn. Well at least I don’t think I am… What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? Of late, I’ve been admiring the works of Driely Carter. He seems to have a natural and effortless talent of capturing not only his muse but also the essence of our modern day and time. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? My business and career flourishing, as I am a Physician Assistant and a current doctoral candidate. I also see my family unit expanding in the next 5 years. Favorite superhero? Why? My mum. She’s endured a lot in raising us, her children, and always putting our family first. She is my hero and my best friend! What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? Same as above.
Diane Tackie What’s your favorite quote? “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do It.” – Pablo Picasso This has been my email signature since like 2006, before Picasso was cool enough to make it into rap songs and the runway lol. My first degree is in Fine Art so I vehemently love all things art. It’s a strong quote for me, as I went from one extreme to the other, Art to Medicine. It never ceases to amaze me when things actually do work out, as I put my all into a project, deadline, or something completely foreign to me at the time, and I end up conquering that task. I truly enjoy the learning the process and it is a blessing, in fact to have that capability. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? PARIS! I’m hoping to travel there this year for my birthday. What’s your theme song? This is a tough one for me, as I love all genres of music. If you happen to be in my car with me, please be mentally prepared to hear Wizkid, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Drake, Coldplay, Future, The Animals, Jimi Hendrix, and Jane Birkin. It’s kind of eclectic, but I love music and it is way too difficult for me to choose just one theme song. As I tell my passengers, just enjoy the experience lol.
What is your favorite body part? My heart. I have a really big heart, and I truly care for my friends and family. I believe we should not only live each day as our last, but live each day as if it were every one else’s last. People never get the flowers, while they can still smell them… What do you do when you are not modeling? Working, cooking, studying neurosurgery or health care policy, seeing patients, running at my gym, visiting my family members, spending quality time with friends, texting everyone back, eating healthy, getting a mani- pedi. All the things that we women do daily, but they don’t got no awards for that… (Trophies) Favorite movie? A Bronx Tale. It was filmed well, and I am a huge fan of both Robert De Niro and Taral Hicks.
Guilty Pleasure? The Golden Girls show, don’t judge. They are hilarious to me and Blanche (Devereaux) is my absolute favorite. Last show you binge-watched? Billions on Showtime. I’m all caught up now and Season 2 is great. I love having to Google every other reference they make in that show, I learn something new every episode. Last book you read? Probably something medical, but more like New England Journal of Medicine. I have to keep up my CME (continuing medical education) credits. Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Nah. I believe I’ve said enough. Thank you for this opportunity. Follow Diane on Instagram @didiebop
Favorite actor/actress? Robert De Niro Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” They say happiness is a decision that comes from within, so my idea would be to be completely content with the circumstances at be at all times. I’m still working on that one personally, as I am content, but just not comfortable. I would just like to do better today than I did yesterday.

Meet Hair Stylist Latesha Hughes How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself When I was about 12 years old, I said I am either going to be a registered nurse, hair stylist, or nurse practitioner . I am 30 years old with a 12 year old son just trying to be the best mom and hair stylist I can be. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Very low key shy, humble, and full of life Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I consider myself to be both. Hair Artist comes out on set behind the scenes to create a vision with hair for the photographer. Hair Stylist is on a daily basis when I work with my new and existing clients. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I enjoy being able to be pushed to the max with my imagination and being able to meet new and exciting people on a daily basis and just [being] someone that people can really depend on. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Long hours of standing can be bad for your back and you might miss key points in your children’s life if you are a single parent. Other than yourself, favorite hair artist/stylist? Why? I have two favorite stylists: Kalixto Balount and Kearnna Stewart. These two gave me a story to always have in my mind for when I get weak. I watch these two struggle and strive for greatness. In the last year, I became a full time stylist. So, when I get weak I have two amazing success stories in my mind and behind my back pushing me. What hair trend do you love? I’m loving all the braids from all cultures. It makes the world look as if we are in peace. What hair trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? I wish mohawks would leave this earth. lol
Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years, I see my name being a household name to hair whether I’m on stage talking to millions of people; behind the scenes on set; or, at Cole Stevens Salon. #savyy_chic will be known world-wide and have Hair Gawddddd attached to it. I have always loved makeup since I was a little girl watching my mother do her makeup and wanting so bad to be able to do my own makeup. Once I got older and was able to purchase my own makeup, friends of mine started asking me to do their makeup and it was then that I knew that I wanted to be in the beauty industry, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until 2012. Meet Hair Stylist Kanika Styles How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. Hair has always been a passion of mine. It’s been an interest since I was a small child. Any time anyone would let me play in their hair, I took advantage of the opportunity. I took a little detour from my dream and obtained a BS in Chemistry, and worked in the Biopharmaceutical industry. I found myself unfulfilled and realized that I had been running from my passion. As soon as my schedule and finances permitted, I attended cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell the School and have been doing what I love ever since! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative and free-spirited Quiet Goofy – in a good way Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I can appreciate both of these titles. They’re interchangeable, in my opinion. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I had a client cry in my chair and tell me that I made her feel beautiful, and that she hadn’t felt that way in a very long time. I love being able to make someone feel good about themselves. I equally love being challenged to create the unconventional. There’s nothing like taking a blank canvas and constructing art. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Right now, only that I’m not able to do it full time. Because it is my passion, I love doing it; however.
Your zodiac sign? Pisces What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I’m a Pisces…we get along with everyone! Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I love the resurgence of the incorporation of braids in hairstyles. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I think the best gifts I’ve given were for Christmas a few years ago. I dabble in jewelry making, and my aunt gave me a bunch of my late grandmother’s jewelry that she came across while cleaning out her old bedroom. I made jewelry for everyone for Christmas, incorporating pieces from my grandmother’s old jewelry, so that everyone would have a piece of her with them when they wear it. Favorite movie? Coming to America Favorite actor/actress? Don Cheadle Last show you binge-watched? Sneaky Pete and Game of Thrones. I’m finally caught up! I CANNOT wait for the next season!
Favorite color? Green/teal Favorite food/drink? Pizza Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I will be freelancing bicoastal, with a business based in the Washington, DC area. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Freedom to do what I please, when and where I please, and being surrounded by people I love.
