Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, It’s 2:02 in the morning, and I’m putting the finishing touches on the June issues and trying to decide what to write. There were some mistakes in the last issue. I’m sorry. I’m human. Mistakes can be fixed if I am made

when I leave off a letter on someone’s name, or mess up a fashion credit, or mislabel a creative team member, please understand it is not intentional. It is a mistake. It is something that keeps me up until 2:00 in the morning. So, if you see a mistake, please let me know; however, please be kind, you never know what someone else is going through. On a positive note, I had such an awesome team for this issue! Photographing dancers is such a humbling experience for someone like me who sometimes has trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. The way their bodies move with grace and power was so much fun to watch and photograph. To top it off they were sisters. To see that bond just reminds me of the bond between me and my sister.

I want to thank Caitie Belle and Brittany Yevoli and their agency (THE Artist Agency) for allowing themselves to be covered in glitter, and to the makeup artists Monique Nicole and Karen Hopson for pushing themselves outside their comfort zone, and of course the awesome hair stylist Kanika Styles who never ceases to amaze me with her artistry! Thank you for your support! As always, I hope you enjoy your escape. Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

Meet Fashion Illustrator Meredith Wing @moomooi

38 SALYSÉ JUNE 2017

Meet Meredith Wing|@moomooi How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I have always been sketching women in fancy dresses and costume. As a four year old I was fascinated by Victorian-era dress as well as the costumes of Golden Age Hollywood movies my father watched growing up outside of Boston. I studied English and French in college and and grad school but was always working in fashion houses and fashion sketching at the same time. I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer but soon realized crafting the 2d image of a design was just as satisfying to me as making the 3d version. The idea of the dress was just as beautiful as the actual dress. Internships at Elle, Lacoste in Paris under Christophe Lemaire, Cynthia Steffe and Sue Stemp in NY all solidified by sartorial curiosities. In my late twenties I finally decided to pursue full time what I had been passionately pursuing as a side interest my whole life – illustration. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Visual, obsessive, hyper-aware. What do you enjoy the most about fashion illustration? Fashion illustration is a cathartic escape for me. Somewhere in my life I find flow and can let my hand guide me without worrying too much about process or outcome. In fact, a practice where the outcome is better the less I think about it. It’s my meditation. What do you not enjoy about fashion illustration? There are certain challenges that come with having a small business and freelancing for oneself that are not tied to the work itself. Deadlines, communication, the design discovery phase can all be challenging just as they can in any field, but at the end of the day the work makes these administrative duties are well worth it.

Favorite color? Depends on context J

Favorite movie? Breathless (Godard)

Favorite food/drink? Pesto gnocchi and a glass of red wine please.

Favorite actor/actress? Marlene Dietrich

What person, living or dead, would you love to share a meal with? My father’s father emigrated from China to America in the 1920s but he died when my father was young. I would love to sit and hear his story. He wrote beautiful love letters to my grandma in China. Who are your clients? Do you have a favorite one? Burt’s Bees, Cosmopolitan, Cosabella, Grey Goose, Patron, Tory Burch, and then once in awhile an individual bride who needs a custom invite. Each industry presents unique approaches so I like to change the industry. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Pencil and paper and all the time in the world.

Favorite superhero? Why? Superwoman because it’s repetitive. What is your favorite word? Least favorite? Limitless, Limited What was the last picture you took with your phone? The tulips on the table at Tatte café in Cambridge – they were mixed with rosemary. If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? My parents living on Bleeker Street in 1969 New York – what a typical evening was like – what they were wearing, what they talked about, their interaction. Guilty Pleasure? Dr. Pepper

Your zodiac sign? Aquarius naturally.

Last show you binge-watched? Chef’s Table

What’s your favorite quote? “I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than regret the things I haven’t done.” - Lucille Ball

Last book you read? Patti Smith “Just Kids” (I know I’m late to the party!)

Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? Antarctica ! What’s your theme song? Cat Stevens “Moon Shadow” What item in your studio can you not live without? Micron pens and coffee.

Anything else you want the readers to know about you? I am looking to get into children’s publishing – anyone’s tips are welcome! meredith@moomooi.com J Follow Meredith on Social Media IG: @moomooi See more of Meredith’s work at: moomooi.com 39 SALYSÉ JUNE 2017

Meet Make Up Artist Monique Nicole How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I am from Washington, DC. I started off as a teen model. I still continued to model in college but eventually fell in love with working behind the scenes with makeup. My mom convinced me to take it seriously and to look into going to school for makeup artistry. After I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture, I returned to DC and studied makeup artistry at the Bennett Career Institute fall 2012. The rest is history! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative, Entrepreneur, Perfectionist What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? I really enjoy the creativity that comes with editorial shoots and the empowerment and beauty I get to provide to my brides and beauty clients. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you have the skills to enhance God’s creation. That is a major responsibility! What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? The early morning call times are not always my friend. I do not know too many people that like to set their alarm for anything earlier than 6:00 am but sometime the job calls for it!

Other than yourself, favorite make up artist? Why? Some of my favorite makeup artists are: Mary Phillips, Renny Vasquez, Same Fine, Nick Posey, Carola Gonzalez, and Danessa Myricks to name a few. I’ve been pretty lucky in the gift department. Let’s hope that continues.

What person, living or dead, would you love to work with? I absolutely want to work with Dawn Richard one day!! I have been such a huge fan since Danity Kane. I have all of her solo work. From her black and white style to her creativity. I do not even know what we would create. I just know I have to work with her one day!! What would you create? I would love to create a “no-makeup” makeup look on her. I love her facial structure. I also would want to go bold with colors. I love colors! I think this issue definitely showcases my love for color.. Speak it into existence. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I see myself working in tv/film, bridal, and fashion editorials. Meet Hair Stylist Kanika Styles How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. Hair has always been a passion of mine. It’s been an interest since I was a small child. Any time anyone would let me play in their hair, I took advantage of the opportunity. I took a little detour from my dream and obtained a BS in Chemistry, and worked in the Biopharmaceutical industry. I found myself unfulfilled and realized that I had been running from my passion. As soon as my schedule and finances permitted, I attended cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell the School and have been doing what I love ever since! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative and free-spirited Quiet Goofy – in a good way Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I can appreciate both of these titles. They’re interchangeable, in my opinion. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I had a client cry in my chair and tell me that I made her feel beautiful, and that she hadn’t felt that way in a very long time. I love being able to make someone feel good about themselves. I equally love being challenged to create the unconventional. There’s nothing like taking a blank canvas and constructing art. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Right now, only that I’m not able to do it full time. Because it is my passion, I love doing it; however.

Your zodiac sign? Pisces What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I’m a Pisces…we get along with everyone! Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? There are so many places on my list to visit. So hard to choose one!! But I would love to go to the Maldives and stay in one of the underwater hotels. What hair trend do you love? I love the resurgence of the incorporation of braids in hairstyles. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I think the best gifts I’ve given were for Christmas a few years ago. I dabble in jewelry making, and my aunt gave me a bunch of my late grandmother’s jewelry that she came across while cleaning out her old bedroom. I made jewelry for everyone for Christmas, incorporating pieces from my grandmother’s old jewelry, so that everyone would have a piece of her with them when they wear it. Favorite movie? Coming to America Favorite actor/actress? Don Cheadle Last show you binge-watched? Sneaky Pete and Game of Thrones. I’m finally caught up! I CANNOT wait for the next season!

Favorite color? Green/teal Favorite food/drink? Pizza Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I will be freelancing bicoastal, with a business based in the Washington, DC area. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Freedom to do what I please, when and where I please, and being surrounded by people I love.
