SALYSÉ Magazine is a photography magazine, featuring beauty, fashion, and conceptual art editorials. We do not seek to define beauty with one narrow idea, but with myriad viewpoints Vintage is right next to emerging designers, who are right next to established designers. We are looking for creatives who push the envelope, take chances, and disregard the status quo. SALYSÉ Magazine is about sophistication, authenticity, with a touch of eccentricity. ---------FOLLOW https://instagram.com/salysemagazine/ LIKE https://www.facebook.com/salysemagazine SUBSCRIBE http://issuu.com/salysemagazine PURCHASE http://www.magcloud.com ---------Not just a magazine— a movement!

Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, It’s 2:02 in the morning, and I’m putting the finishing touches on the June issues and trying to decide what to write. There were some mistakes in the last issue. I’m sorry. I’m human. Mistakes can be fixed if I am made

when I leave off a letter on someone’s name, or mess up a fashion credit, or mislabel a creative team member, please understand it is not intentional. It is a mistake. It is something that keeps me up until 2:00 in the morning. So, if you see a mistake, please let me know; however, please be kind, you never know what someone else is going through. On a positive note, I had such an awesome team for this issue! Photographing dancers is such a humbling experience for someone like me who sometimes has trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. The way their bodies move with grace and power was so much fun to watch and photograph. To top it off they were sisters. To see that bond just reminds me of the bond between me and my sister.

I want to thank Caitie Belle and Brittany Yevoli and their agency (THE Artist Agency) for allowing themselves to be covered in glitter, and to the makeup artists Monique Nicole and Karen Hopson for pushing themselves outside their comfort zone, and of course the awesome hair stylist Kanika Styles who never ceases to amaze me with her artistry! Thank you for your support! As always, I hope you enjoy your escape. Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

Meet Model Natalie Neff How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. When I was 14, I was in a pretty bad car accident that did some damage to my face and also left me with some self-confidence problems. Even though other people couldn’t see a difference, after it was fixed, I still felt different. Growing up since then, I realized that it isn’t any fun living life constantly worried about your appearance or wanting to fit in with the people around you because being different is an amazing thing. I started in modeling all because one day at the mall, I was scouted by Barbizon and went on to be in a modeling competition on a cruise ship which is also how I ended up meeting the agency I’m now signed with. I’ve only been modeling for about 5 months now and it’s still so weird to think of myself as a model but I’m in love with it for sure. I just want to be a good role model to people that have been through tough times because I can definitely relate and I can honestly say that life gets better when you start living your life for yourself and not for everyone else. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Quirky, Dreamer, Passionate What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I love being able to become a photographers vision as an art piece and being able to transform into different people in photos because it reminds me of playing dress up as a little girl. What do you not enjoy about modeling? I honestly can’t say I dislike anything about it. I haven’t been modeling for very long but everyone I’ve come in contact with has been amazing and I’m happy with every part of it so far. Favorite color? Lime Green

Favorite food? Sushi What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? For Love And Lemons because their clothes are edgy and elegant at the same time. What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? Emily Soto, because I love her edgy style of photography and I’m obsessed with the vintage editorial shoots she has done. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself in my own home in New Orleans, Louisiana hopefully with my same 3 fur babies. I’ll have reached one of my biggest goals which is to be a successful model as well as having my real estate license. I’ll definitely be more experienced than I am now, but still have so much to see and learn. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would love to be able to visit Venice, Italy.

What is your theme song? “Kill Em With Kindness” –Selena Gomez What do you do when you are not modeling? Relax at home with my fur babies, finding cool places to take photos with my friends, or taking my family or boyfriend on the hunt for some good sushi spots. Favorite movie? Titanic Favorite actor/actress? Jennifer Lawrence Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery”? My idea of happiness is to be surrounded by people who love you for who you are, no matter how awkward I might be. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? How to make my own clothes. Guilty Pleasure? Laughing at my dogs eating peanut butter.

Your zodiac sign? Virgo

Last show you binge-watched? 13 Reasons Why

Favorite superhero? Why? Spiderman, because I can relate with his awesome sarcasm.

Last book you read? More of a poem, but “The Iliad and the Odyssey” by Homer

What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? My Grandma because she was a hard working woman who was also very graceful and loving, I hope I can be as amazing of a woman as her one day.

Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Being the awkward and quirky person I was meant to be was the best thing that I ever let myself do because that has led me to where I am and to the amazing people I’ve met along the way. The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to be who you truly are because everything else will fall into place.

What’s your favorite quote? “She wore her scars as her best attire. A stunning dress made of hellfire” –Daniel Saint What is your favorite body part? Arms

Meet Fashion Illustrator Meredith Wing @moomooi

186 SALYSÉ JUNE 2017

Meet Meredith Wing|@moomooi How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I have always been sketching women in fancy dresses and costume. As a four year old I was fascinated by Victorian-era dress as well as the costumes of Golden Age Hollywood movies my father watched growing up outside of Boston. I studied English and French in college and and grad school but was always working in fashion houses and fashion sketching at the same time. I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer but soon realized crafting the 2d image of a design was just as satisfying to me as making the 3d version. The idea of the dress was just as beautiful as the actual dress. Internships at Elle, Lacoste in Paris under Christophe Lemaire, Cynthia Steffe and Sue Stemp in NY all solidified by sartorial curiosities. In my late twenties I finally decided to pursue full time what I had been passionately pursuing as a side interest my whole life – illustration. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Visual, obsessive, hyper-aware. What do you enjoy the most about fashion illustration? Fashion illustration is a cathartic escape for me. Somewhere in my life I find flow and can let my hand guide me without worrying too much about process or outcome. In fact, a practice where the outcome is better the less I think about it. It’s my meditation. What do you not enjoy about fashion illustration? There are certain challenges that come with having a small business and freelancing for oneself that are not tied to the work itself. Deadlines, communication, the design discovery phase can all be challenging just as they can in any field, but at the end of the day the work makes these administrative duties are well worth it.

Favorite color? Depends on context J

Favorite movie? Breathless (Godard)

Favorite food/drink? Pesto gnocchi and a glass of red wine please.

Favorite actor/actress? Marlene Dietrich

What person, living or dead, would you love to share a meal with? My father’s father emigrated from China to America in the 1920s but he died when my father was young. I would love to sit and hear his story. He wrote beautiful love letters to my grandma in China. Who are your clients? Do you have a favorite one? Burt’s Bees, Cosmopolitan, Cosabella, Grey Goose, Patron, Tory Burch, and then once in awhile an individual bride who needs a custom invite. Each industry presents unique approaches so I like to change the industry. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Pencil and paper and all the time in the world.

Meet Make Up Artist Monique Nicole How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I am from Washington, DC. I started off as a teen model. I still continued to model in college but eventually fell in love with working behind the scenes with makeup. My mom convinced me to take it seriously and to look into going to school for makeup artistry. After I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture, I returned to DC and studied makeup artistry at the Bennett Career Institute fall 2012. The rest is history! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative, Entrepreneur, Perfectionist What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? There is no greater feeling than knowing that you have the skills to enhance God’s creation. That is a major responsibility! What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? From her black and white style to her creativity. I do not even know what we would create. I just know I have to work with her one day!! What would you create? I would love to create a “no-makeup” makeup look on her. I love her facial structure. I also would want to go bold with colors. I love colors! Meet Hair Stylist Kanika Styles How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. Hair has always been a passion of mine. It’s been an interest since I was a small child. Any time anyone would let me play in their hair, I took advantage of the opportunity. I took a little detour from my dream and obtained a BS in Chemistry, and worked in the Biopharmaceutical industry. I found myself unfulfilled and realized that I had been running from my passion. As soon as my schedule and finances permitted, I attended cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell the School and have been doing what I love ever since! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative and free-spirited Quiet Goofy – in a good way Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I can appreciate both of these titles. They’re interchangeable, in my opinion. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I had a client cry in my chair and tell me that I made her feel beautiful, and that she hadn’t felt that way in a very long time. I love being able to make someone feel good about themselves. I equally love being challenged to create the unconventional. There’s nothing like taking a blank canvas and constructing art. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Right now, only that I’m not able to do it full time. Because it is my passion, I love doing it; however.

Your zodiac sign? Pisces What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I’m a Pisces…we get along with everyone! Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? There are so many places on my list to visit. So hard to choose one!! But I would love to go to the Maldives and stay in one of the underwater hotels. What hair trend do you love? I love the resurgence of the incorporation of braids in hairstyles. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I think the best gifts I’ve given were for Christmas a few years ago. I dabble in jewelry making, and my aunt gave me a bunch of my late grandmother’s jewelry that she came across while cleaning out her old bedroom. I made jewelry for everyone for Christmas, incorporating pieces from my grandmother’s old jewelry, so that everyone would have a piece of her with them when they wear it. Favorite movie? Coming to America Favorite actor/actress? Don Cheadle Last show you binge-watched? Sneaky Pete and Game of Thrones. I’m finally caught up! I CANNOT wait for the next season!

Favorite color? Green/teal Favorite food/drink? Pizza Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I will be freelancing bicoastal, with a business based in the Washington, DC area. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Freedom to do what I please, when and where I please, and being surrounded by people I love.
