Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, Have you ever been in a position where it hurts to laugh? About eight weeks ago, on November 8, 2016 I had an open myomectomy to remove fibroids that had become debilitating. Yes, I did “endure” the election results through the haze of some heavy-duty narcotics. I’m a fairly private person, so sharing this info feels a little awkward, but the more I talked to the women in my network, the more stories I heard of friends, mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousins who had the same condition. I realized I was not alone, and that was very comforting. Women’s health does not need to be whispered about behind closed doors. If I have to be subjected to ED commercials on a regular basis, then why should anyone be afraid to talk about a uterus? So, if by sharing my story, I can encourage one woman reading this letter to schedule that doctor’s appointment they have been putting off, or have that test done that they have been dreading, then it will be worth it. Looking at the surgery in hindsight, I have a few realizations. Do it afraid. Rely on your support system. Don’t rush the recovery. Laugh, even though it hurts. Thank God for Obama Care! Do it afraid. When they mention all the complications, start asking about living wills, and power of attorney, weigh all your options and do what is best for you. Find the best surgeon and do it even if you are afraid! Rely on your support system. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. During my recovery I sometimes didn’t want to ask for help because I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. Your network is willing to help. You just have to ask. Don’t rush the recovery. There is a reason they give you a timeline before you can return to “normal activities.” You just had your abdomen sliced open, life is not going to be normal for a while. Every time I overdid it, I paid for it the next day. Laugh, even though it hurts. Pretty self-explanatory. I think laughter is the best medicine. Thank God for Obama Care! I’m very thankful to President Barack Obama for caring about affordable healthcare for all. And now back to the fashion. As always, I hope you enjoy your escape. Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

I saw Jean's work in a magazine over a year ago and fell in love with the look of the paper clothes she designs. They have kind of a futuristic look to them, are made from recyclable materials and are very unique in the design so it was love at first site for me! I can imagine a scene in a sci fi movie where everyone is dressed in this style of clothes and would totally believe they were from the future or another planet. I was lucky enough to bump into Jean in person during a photoshoot in Bangkok a few months back and immediately made plans to get a few designs from her to do my own shoot. -Shane Devlin

Meet Designer Jean Dara What is your inspiration for the Paper Doll concept? I really wanted a Barbie Doll look and was looking around the web for a simple concept that I can do for a Facebook profile photo. I saw a matryoshka doll wrapped in shipping paper and I thought that will be cool to do a paper-wrap type outfit. How did you get started into design? I grew up at my grandmother’s house and she would always salvage clothes, modify them, or altogether create a new piece by piecing 2 or more outfits together. Sometimes I helped, but most of the time I watched in amazement at how she transformed “rags” into outfits.

Meet Model Seneca Bryson How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. As a child, people told me I looked like a model. After years of it being suggested that I give modeling a try, I did! I’ve never looked back and am loving every minute. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? Every modeling job is different! I enjoy the evolving nature of the industry and the uniqueness of each experience. What do you not enjoy about modeling? Adhering to a strict and healthy diet. It can be a challenge, but it’s a necessity. What do you do when you are not modeling? I’m almost always listening to a podcast if I’m not doing something that requires my complete attention. Favorite color? Pastel purple. Favorite food? Anything toffee, coffee, caramel, or chocolate.

What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? My goal is to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. I hope to model for them in advertisements and walk in their runway shows. Getting to work for Victoria’s Secret would be a career-changer; they help girls enter the upper echelons of the modeling world. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? My dream vacation is to go on a snorkeling tour of several reefs around the world. So far, my list includes those in the Maldives, Bali, Belize, and Australia, but I’m sure I will add to it as time goes on. Your zodiac sign? I’m a Scorpio. What’s your favorite quote? “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” -Evelyn Beatrice Hall Last show you binge-watched? “Son’s of Anarchy” and “Grey’s Anatomy”...at the same time. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I know this isn’t possible, but I would teach myself to have a photographic memory. Here’s to hoping, I suppose! Guilty Pleasure? I love getting a massage. Your idea of “happiness”? For me, “happiness” means achieving my goals.

76 SALYSÉ JAN 2017

Meet Photographer Emma Canfield How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I first seriously picked up a camera in my sophomore year of high school, and fell in love with photography. I went on to get my BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, where I studied with Henry Horenstein. After RISD, I worked for Timothy White in his New York and Los Angeles studios. Since then, I’ve been living in New York City, doing as many shoots as possible, and building my editorial/advertising portfolio. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Dedicated, Perfectionist, Driven What do you enjoy the most about photography? Getting lost in capturing beauty & the fleeting moment. What do you not enjoy about photography? The logistics, equipment and minutiae involved in getting ready for a shoot. Favorite color? Currently, it’s forest green. Favorite food/drink? Any form of carbs, especially pasta. What person, living or dead, would you love to photograph? If I had the chance, I would love to photograph Sia – she has had such an elusive visual presence, but has broken through as a major and meaningful musical force, it would be fantastic to get her to open up for the camera. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Finding the perfect balance of work, friends, adventure and relaxation. Your zodiac sign? Gemini Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I’ve heard Iceland is an amazing location to shoot – just ideally perhaps in the summer? – but it would be a working vacation!

What’s your favorite quote? “You’re only as good as your worst image.” What’s your theme song? “Try Not to Breathe” by REM If you had the opportunity to meet any photographer, living or dead, who would it be? Richard Avedon – I’m sure he would had some incredible stories. Favorite movie? I’m an avid consumer of movies so this is a hard one – but an all time favorite for me is Secret Garden (1993) – visually inspiring, especially that house – also anything directed by Terry Gilliam. Favorite actor/actress? Amy Adams – she is good in everything! Favorite superhero? Why? Wolverine – he has something of a tough exterior, but is still a good person. What is your favorite word? Least favorite? My favorite word: “effervescent”; my least favorite: “talent,” because I feel it marginalizes the hard work that people put into their craft. What was the last picture you took with your phone? Since it’s currently Christmas time as I’m writing this, & I live in NYC – I took a picture of an apartment window from street level with the tree in the window – the tree is the only light in the image, and had a lovely glow & warmth to it. If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? The first space launch from Cape Canaveral. Last book you read? Acceptable Risk by Robin Cook Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Keep up with my work on Instagram @emmazzing
