Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, Red. February 14th. Valentine’s Day. The day of love. But wouldn’t it be such a better world if we expressed that love on the other 364 days of the year? I am finding it incredibly difficult to write about “LOVE”, when I am greatly troubled by the hate I see emanating from the highest office in the United States. So, in these tough times, I hope SALYSÉ can bring a little love, a little sunshine, and a little joy into your world. As always, I hope you enjoy your escape. Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

--------A few quotes that have been on my mind since January 20th: Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. -Martin Luther King, Jr. In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. -Martin Luther King, Jr. Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. -Martin Luther King, Jr. The moral arc of the universe bends at the elbow of justice. -Martin Luther King, Jr. Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. -Martin Luther King, Jr. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality. -Martin Luther King, Jr. ----------

Meet Photographer Kirill Buryak How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I first learned to appreciate film photography as a kid, in my family’s darkroom in Ukraine, while developing B&W photographs with my dad. I have been doing photography ever since, trying my hand in various genres. I was tapped to do an installation of celebrity chef’s “hall of fame” that have spoken at the Google campus - that was the genesis of my interest in portraiture photography. In the last few years I’m focusing on portrait, editorial fashion & beauty photography. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Obsessive. Innovative. Meticulous What do you enjoy the most about photography? That moment right before the click, with your finger on the shutter, when you want to stop time completely, because every frame, every millisecond of it is absolutely beautiful. What do you not enjoy about photography? The fact that photography is a “Death By A Thousand Cuts” type of art - any of the million little details going wrong can ruin the final product.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being in perfect state of flow, doing what you love, while time is standing still. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I’m on my dream vacation right now as I’m writing this on beautiful Maui. What country would you love to shoot in? French Polynesia If you had the opportunity to meet any photographer, living or dead, who would it be? Paolo Roversi, absolutely LOVE his style

“When you photograph a face. . .you photograph the soul behind it.” -Jean-Luc Godard

Favorite color? Garnet Red Favorite food/drink? Branzino / a perfectly crafted cortado What person, living or dead, would you love to photograph? Coco Rocha - the master of a 1000 poses! Your zodiac sign? Taurus What’s your favorite quote? “When you photograph a face . . .you photograph the soul behind it.” (Jean-Luc Godard)

Favorite movie? Most recently, The Dressmaker Favorite actor/actress? Cate Blanchett - a master of transformation! What is your favorite word? Double-take Least favorite word? I’m allergic to “should” :) What was the last picture you took with your phone? Of a beautiful sunset over Wailea, Maui

If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? The filming of Citizen Kane Guilty Pleasure? Instagram Last show you binge-watched? Stranger Things on Netflix Last book you read? The Whistler by John Grisham Anything else you want the readers to know about you. You can see more of my work at www.kirillburyak.com

Meet Model Eva Villalobos How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I loved fashion and supermodels as a teenager, but as I got older I didn’t feel it was healthy to be held to supermodel standards of weight, plus I’m a few inches too short. I didn’t know about other genres of modeling until a coworker at Starbucks showed me some of her art modeling work. It was really cool how she was transformed into something completely different from who I knew her to be. I made an account on Model Mayhem and went from there. At the same time, I moved to Hawaii to volunteer on organic farms - which is a passion of mine. So, every so often, I’d have the opportunity to collaborate with artists and photographers, and I built my portfolio. I enjoyed being creative with my body. I saw that other freelance models were using their work to travel and go on “tours”, so to speak, and I decided to do that as well. I try to balance my work life with time spent in nature as well as museums to “refill the cup” of my inspiration.

Your zodiac sign? Pisces

Three adjectives to describe yourself. Contemplative, earthy, dancer.

What do you do when you are not modeling? I love to garden, dance, hike, camp, explore cities with unique architecture, go to museums, ride bikes. Exploring in general. Oh and yoga, I love love love yoga and studying various wisdom traditions. Comparative mythology is my jam.

What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I love traveling and collaborating with talented creatives. What do you not enjoy about modeling? As with any job, not everyone is easy to work with. I dislike when when people are flakey or act unprofessionally. Favorite color? Purple Favorite food? Brussels sprouts What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? I could have answered this question much more easily ten years ago, but I haven’t kept up with that kind of stuff lately. Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Healthily balanced between world travel/philanthropy and gardening at home/building local sustainable community. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would love to return to Bali, ride bicycles through the rice paddies, bask in the glory of all those temples, and eat a lot of great food.

Favorite superhero? Why? I’m not big into superheroes, but if I had a super power it’d be flight. What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? My teacher, Gurmukh. She is the embodiment of radiance and inspires me to serve others. What’s your theme song? This is incredibly hard to answer because I listen to so many genres of music, but, at the moment it’s Rogue Bagel by Ott. What is your favorite body part? Legs

Favorite movie? Amelie? Moulin Rouge? Samsara? Hard to say. Favorite actor/actress? Currently, Meryl Streep Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery”? Dancing regularly, yoga highs, delicious healthy food with good people, a good balance of nature and city life. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Tango dancing Guilty Pleasure? I’m not guilty about my pleasures. Last show you binge-watched? Downton Abbey Last book you read? Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clara Pinkola Estes

Meet the CREATIVE TEAM MEET MODEL Jacqueline DePaul Jacqueline DePaul, a Los Angeles model and fashion blogger as well as humanitarian activist, holds a degree in Physics and works as a technology consultant. Jacqueline created our new editorial to explore reflections in time away from the usual routine. Jacqueline is the founder of the fashion collaboration blog Yellow Brick Runway and a humanitarian supporting programs for literacy, drug rehabilitation, criminal reform, the environment, and human rights. She especially seeks to raise awareness of the need for professional women to find creative expression as a way to bring balance and fulfillment to their busy lives. MEET DESIGNER Sarmy Reyes From Los Angeles, Sarmy Reyes has vision, perception, imagination, determination, creativity, and the passion to succeed as a fashion designer and in millinery. High fashion and couture is his spirit and fixation. With years in the industry, Sarmy Reyes is experienced to do anything from under garments to night gowns to couture accessories and designs. MEET DESIGNER Gordana Gehlhausen Originally from former Yugoslavia, she grew up in a small Serbian Village in Bosnia. Always very creative, she managed to dress completely different from everyone else. She knitted her first sweater at age seven. Life took more unexpected turns as she moved to the United States and settled in Atlanta, Georgia. It was there she started to fine-tune her designing skills by creating a children’s clothing line. From there she moved to Charleston, South Caroling where she opened her first GOGA boutique. Recently, her newest shops have been opened in downtown San Diego and Santa Monica, California. Gordana was 156 one of the contestants on the sixth season of Project Runway and Project SALYSÉ FEB Runway All-Stars. 2017

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION Jacqueline Depaul together with photographer Lesley Pedraza created this modified neo-Victorian set of images to explore the idea of escapism, where the boundaries of fashion are slightly blurred. Jacqueline and her surroundings have provided designers Sarmy Reyes and Gordana Gehlhausen a foundation on which to present the elements of their Victorian-inspired style with an edge. Recent television shows such as Penny Dreadful and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, both set in Victorian times, highlight female protagonists sporting gothic Victorian looks with an edge, reigniting and inspiring an interest in Victorian fashion for the modern day. Or, this setting may hold a hint of where Harry Potter’s leading ladies like to spend their time, properly dressed in flirty intelligent styles. Jacqueline interprets the runes of fashion while the wizard behind the camera, photographer Lesley Pedraza, captures these illusions among the reading nooks of an enchanted book depository. The romance of the19th century’s British Victorian era garb never ceases to inspire, with its lonely but glamorous feel. This collection is a fusion of faux-Victorian style and classic vintage style along with a splash of art nouveau designs. To enhance the dreamy aspect of being transported to a new world, Jacqueline embodies the beauty and timelessness of style while making them a reality.

ABOUT THE LOCATION The Last Bookstore is California’s largest used and new book and record store. Currently in its third incarnation, it began in 2005 in a downtown Los Angeles loft. That’s when owner Josh Spencer took his decade of experience selling everything from cars to clothes online and focused instead on his first love: books. During the revitalization of downtown Los Angeles, it grew quickly to its current 22,000 sq. ft. space in the Spring Arts Tower at 5th & Spring. The name was chosen with irony, but seems more appropriate with each passing day as physical bookstores die out like dinosaurs from the meteoric impact of Amazon and e-books. They continue to BUY, SELL, and TRADE like they have from day one. In addition to over 250,000 new and used books on two floors, including their new Arts & Rare Book Annex, the shared space includes tens of thousands of vinyl records and graphic novels, a huge mezzanine level that includes the Labyrinth Above the Last Bookstore, Gather Yarn Shop, and the Spring Arts Collective gallery shops. Truly something for everyone! Over time, it has become one of the largest independent bookstores in the world still standing. They continue to be amazed at their longevity, but it’s ALL thanks to people who want to keep actual books and records existing in the world. Join the cause — visit The Last Bookstore soon!
