Hi, Sam Travis here... Nice to meet you! I want to create things that make people’s lives easier and more colourful. To me, good design is a perfect blend of straightforward/intuitive
+ sleek/bold
Design is all about solving a user’s problems. If 100% of a product isn’t devoted to this, it has less lasting use for the world.

D I A L P HON E making tech accessible for the elderly... 01
The elderly market want to maintain their independence. However, most assistive technology looks ugly & cheap, serving as an expensive symbol of their old age. DIAL replaces antiseptic Telecare systems & outdated feature phones to intuitively connect them to the digital world around them.
The problem - elderly-accessible tech (feature phones, telecare etc) is generations behind although modern innovations could benefit them massively.
DIAL works in the background connecting users to people/services around them. Blending analogue & digital gives the elderly an intuitive, natural experience. The control dial provides quick switching between four 'modes' - message, call, travel, plan. Adaptive e-ink buttons provide touch-screen versatility without overwhelming.
connect to contacts & locations by 'bumping' devices
wireless charging - no cables/plugs

An accompanying wristband ensures that users stay active & healthy. Health sensors & fall detectors make sure that, in the case of an crisis, emergency services & contacts will be notified.
3 use buttons or voice command 4 let DIAL do the rest!
CURVA crafting a centrepiece for the modern kitchen‌ 02
Kitchenware storage is boring. Research shows that most young first time tenants want charm, style & personality injected into their small flats. CURVA highlights the rich, organic character of its raw materials to create a contemporary centrepiece that's both solid & sleek.
Influenced by design ranges from Alessi & Joseph Joseph, this fixture is designed to create charm from the 'mundane' aspects of home life. As such, common kitchenware storage becomes a source of inspiration & style.
Thick, solid stone pots glamourise organic textures, contrasted by the brushed metals' vibrant, shiny finish.

Cycling is set to become an essential mode of transportation across urban centres in the next 10 years. How can Rapha harness urban bike share systems in 10 years time to coax new Gen-Z cyclists into their community?
Gen-Z value wellness & sustainability. Cycling is likely to be their preferred method of urban travel. 1.
Future cities will embrace cycling over cars as a primary mode of transportation. 2.
Bike sharing demos the benefits of cycling to those who usually drive or walk, allowing them to 'test the waters'. 3.
Sahre is an upmarket dockless bike share frame aimed to demonstrate the exiting benefits of cycling as a mode of transportation & sport, fostering a new Gen-Z community of cyclists.
With a striking one-piece composite frame, Rapha Share gives commuters an unforgettable first cycling experience that reflects Rapha's brand vision. Every part is hidden inside the frame, making Share impervious to vandalism & theft.
micro
living constructing a stylish, versatile living space no larger than 15 sqm... 04
Prime central London is seeing the rise of the 'micro-apartment'. Research suggests that, due to squeezed budgets, location & convenience are prioritised over size. 'Micro living' is a flat that appeals to young professionals wishing to entertain whilst incorporating all basic housing requirements.

Gamification is the application of game elements in non-game environments to encourage engagement. How do you design a product around manipulating proven game elements (designed to stimulate children) to actually encourage healthy behaviour?

This led to Sleepmate, a smart band worn daily by children. It’s simple; a friendly face reminds you of parent-set activities to complete, whilst long & short term rewards are given for staying on time.

you're late!
‘Traffic lights’ & vibration signify change in state. ‘Points’ provide instant reward, ‘levels’ visualise long term achievement. ‘Level-ups’ rewarded by extended fun activities. Button is pressed when task is complete (with parent supervision)

<computer> building STEM toys for wilko's current BLOX range... 07
Coding, digital & computer-based skills are more important for kids to learn than ever before. So, why not learn about computers by literally building one? Using Wilko’s BLOX range, a basic computer has been designed to resemble a BLOX set. Building is easy yet rewarding as the user is told the importance of every major component.
the brief - "to design innovative BLOX concepts that work with our existing BLOX brick..." what are BLOX? "Wilko's own brand construction range - it is compatible with the leading brands."

The computer has been designed to be familiar & comforting - mimicking traditional BLOX colours & forms to remove all intimidation or complication for the user. Simple icons visually convey which component is which. All electronics are safely & securely hidden inside the plastic blocks. Assembling a computer is literally as easy as putting BLOX together.
1. build the base plate & outer walls
3. add the correct components to circuit 2. insert the circuitboard at the correct orientation
4. attach power pack/lid (cuts electricity when lifted)
