2017 FAI-F3A Aerobatic World Championship Grant Brook

The preparation for the 2017 world championship started just after the SA Nationals, held at the end of April 2017. This was the final team selection event and resulted in the 2017 F3A team being announced as AndrĂŠ Stockwell, Roston Dugmore, Calvin Schroll, and the junior member Michael Sacca. Calvin was forced to withdraw as a result of lack of funding and due to the timing of the world championships in November (usually August) Michael had to withdraw in favour of writing his matric exams. Clinton Carter-Brown was the first reserve and stepped into the 3rd senior spot in the team. Unfortunately there was no junior pilot to take the place of Michael. Grant Brook is the regular caller for Clinton and had previously promised Clinton that he would go with to call if Clinton made the team. This made him an easy choice for Team Manager. The Team Manager role is a tightly kept secret. Part of the reason is to conceal the vast amount of work that is required to ensure that everything is in place before, during and after the World Championships. This is where a special note of thanks must go to Linda Dold and Bob Skinner from the SAMAA admin office who provided all the necessary support in dealing with Aero Club, FAI, and also the competition organisers when they were a little slow to respond. Bob's experience and knowledge was invaluable in sorting out the little 'tricks of the trade'. Sponsorship is a key part of international sporting events. With a budget of close to R250 000 for the four team members it was critical that some form of sponsorship was obtained in order to help finance the trip. Here a huge vote of thanks must go to Michael Borcherds (www.greencoil.com) who sponsored three mattresses. These mattresses were sold through Tafelberg Furnishers (www.tafelberg.co.za) who then transferred the proceeds to the team account. Other title sponsors include Aerial Concepts (www.aerialconcepts.co.za), Redipak (www.redipak.co.za), the SAMAA, the WPMAA (www.squareedge.co.za/wpmaa) and Stuart Nix from Square Edge Design (www.squareedge.co.za) who designed the team logo and who prepared and printed the sticker sheets and banner. Last but not least to all the MAASA members and supporters who kindly donated to the team fund. Their contribution is recorded on the website (www.maasa.co.za/argentinasponsors.php). Even with the best planning things don't always work out as expected. We had booked our flights with LATAM (South America's Regional Airline) who had kindly offered to transport the model boxes as part of the check-in luggage (ie. free of charge). Some of the other teams had to pay up to 700 Euros each for the transport of their model boxes, so this was a significant sponsorship. Unfortunately the flight to Sao Paulo was a code share flight with SAA and somewhere between SAA and ACSA they decided not to load the model boxes onto the flight. This we only discovered when we arrived in Buenos Aires at 10pm and after a two hour battle at the lost luggage counter. By the time we arrived at our hotel it was after 1am and with the five hour time difference, everybody in South Africa was already waking up. A frantic whatsapp to the SIG chairman, Danie Potgieter Jnr, launched a local search mission and together with the help of the Johannesburg LATAM office we eventually received our models only one day late.

Next it was on to the competition venue where we settled down into a practise routine in preparation for the Preliminary rounds that started on Sunday 5th November. The wind and relatively cold ambient weather made for tough flying conditions during the practise and competition days. It varied in strength from about 25km/h upwards with 30km/h+ being the norm and gusts of over 50km/h not uncommon. The South African team made the most of the conditions and each pilot put in a solid flight in each of the four rounds. Day 4 resulted in some excitement. Low cloud was the order of the day with Andre' losing his airplane in cloud for parts of three manoeuvres. The judges had X-Ray vision and only marked him as Not Observed in one of the three manoeuvres resulting in a reflight for that manoeuvre. The Turkish pilot flying after Andre' also lost his plane in cloud but was unable to recover resulting in him picking up the pieces about 2km away. Somehow it had planted itself in an open field away from the vast areas of marsh that surround the airfield. SAMAA News Issue 1 of 2018 - Page 1

Many of the competitors battled in the conditions which ultimately helped Clinton (29th) and Roston (26th) make the semi final rounds with Andre' (33rd) narrowly missing out. Clinton and Roston both knuckled down and again put in solid flights for the two semi-final rounds in very difficult conditions with strong winds that increased the energy demands on battery-powered planes to their limit. The final score from the preliminary rounds is carried forward and the best two scores from the three determine the semi-final score. Unfortunately only the top ten pilots compete in the final rounds but Team SA had achieved what they had set out to do and were content to sit on the sidelines and watch the top ten pilots battle it out in extreme conditions with wind gusts exceeding 60km/h. In the end Tetsuo Onda (Japan) managed to finally beat Christophe Paysant-le Roux (CPLR) after many second-place finishes in the past. CPLR (France) finished second with Jason Shulman (USA) in third. Team USA was the top placed team, followed by France and Japan. The semi finals scores resulted in both Clinton and Roston improving their positions with Clinton finishing in 23rd place and Roston in 25th. With Andre' in 33rd, this put South Africa in 6th place out of 27 teams and 64 competitors. The improved placings in the semi-finals certainly supports the need to continue to fly the F-schedule in local competition and team selection events. The last time that more than one South African pilot made the top 30 was in 1979 (The first time the world championship was held in South Africa) with John Brink (16), Charlie Marincowitz (19) and Ivan Olivier (23). In that year there were 17 teams and 49 pilots and Team South Africa finished 6th. The rules at the time only had the top five pilots progressing to the fly-off, although the jury allowed Bruno Giezendanner to qualify in sixth place. The last time any RSA pilot made the top 30 was in the 2013 world championships held in South Africa when Roston Dugmore ended 24th to become Junior World champion with 30 teams and 80 pilots competing. In that year South Africa finished 8th. There are photos in the gallery on the MAASA website (www.maasa.co.za) and if you click on the Facebook link (top left of the website) you will get more details and scores. The team is back in South Africa after a successful campaign and ready to relax for a while before tackling the 2018/2019 season with renewed vigour. Thanks again to all the team supporters, friends and family that have stood with us on our journey.

Chairman’s report Marthinus Potgieter On 29th March, the SAMAA Management Committee is hosting the 80th SAMAA AGM. I believe that this is a massive milestone of which all members can be very proud. Many people have contributed selflessly over the last 80 years to the success that this organisation has become. Our 2017 Power Nationals was hosted from 27 April to 1 May 2017 at the PC Pelser full size aerodrome in Klerksdorp. I received very positive feedback – every year that the SAMAA hosts this event it gets better and better. Once again, we can take many lessons away from this event to improve on for next year. A special word of thanks to our General Manager, Mr Bob Skinner, for all his hard work improving the facilities before the time. Also, to Linda Dold from the SAMAA office who managed and assisted with many of the administration processes. The attendance of our Vice Chairman, Johan Groenewald, was also appreciated. Based on feedback received and the cost of hosting the event in Klerksdorp, it was decided to host the 2018 SAMAA Power Nationals at Henley Model Airfield and Family Entertainment from 27 April to 1 May 2018. This will enable judges to be hosted by local members and result in a rather large saving. As Chairman of the SAMAA I am compelled to apologise to the membership for reneging on a decision that was made by the SMC during 2017 stipulating that no other events would be approved on the same weekend as the SAMAA Power Nationals. It was brought to the attention of the SMC recently that historically three events have been hosted over that weekend and some of these events have been hosted for the last fifteen years. I do not believe the decision to not approve another event on the same weekend was a mistake but rather the error lay in the selection of dates for the SAMAA Power Nationals. This matter was deliberated at length by the SMC and, after all factors had been taken into account, the decision was made to approve the three events that will take place on the same weekend in 2018. On the international front, Tiaan van Rooyen did South Africa and the SAMAA very proud when he became the 2017 Junior World Champion for F3K, Hand-Launched Gliders in Lviv, Ukraine, during July 2017. Tiaan also won the Pre-Comp and that is a rather rare occurrence. Likewise, Alan Smith's fourth place in the Senior Category is also a very commendable achievement. Congratulations also to Brett Lewis, the Team Manager, Craig Goodrum and Ivor Fletcher, the other members of the team, who I believe supported each other to be able to attain these achievements. MAASA sent a team to the F3A World Championships that was held during November 2017 in Villa Gesell, Argentina. Congratulations to Clinton Carter-Brown, Roston Dugmore and Andre Stockwell for a very respectable result. Team South Africa was placed sixth overall out of 26 countries. Well done also to Grant Brook, the Team Manager. 2017 also saw the nomination and appointment of Mr Danie Potgieter as the Special Interest Group Chairman. I would like to congratulate and welcome Danie and thank him for his willingness to serve the SAMAA and look forward to working with him. The Club visits by Boet Denysschen during 2017 were ongoing and built on previous successes. Reports appeared in the SAMAA news on a regular basis detailing the visits. Thank you to Boet for all his hard work and willingness to fill this portfolio. The SMC is toying with the idea of incorporating sponsorship for organised events. Such sponsorships will be calculated on a post-event basis where a point scoring system will determine the value of the sponsorship. Only key elements relevant to the promotion of model aviation and the improvement of pilot proficiencies will be relevant. On 21 and 22 October 2017 the Fun Fly Masters was hosted at the Barnstormers Club. As Fun Fly has declined over the last couple of years, the turnout was commendable and it was a pleasure to see some new faces. The sponsored prize money was distributed between all the classes and many members benefitted from this initiative. Thank you to Johan Sieling and the SAMAA office who championed this process and a special thank you to Danie Potgieter, the chairman of Barnstormers, and all his members who sacrificed their excellent facility for this event. I am sure that under the newly elected Chairperson, Riaan Lehanie, this wonderful discipline will grow and so will the Masters. Originally, the 2017 Fun Fly Masters was going to be hosted by Lowveld Model Aircraft Club in Nelspruit but was then moved to Barnstormers. I would like to apologise to Alec Groenewald, the chairman, and all his members if there was any misunderstanding regarding the change of venue. I would like to commend LOMAC and its members for the massive effort they made to attend this event in a very good spirit and in an extremely well-organised manner. From Friday, 9 March to Sunday, 11 March 2018, the annual Aero Club of South Africa Air Week was hosted at Middelburg Municipal Aerodrome. This year only Roland Suhrmuller participated with his Large Scale Sbach and I believe he wowed the spectators. Thank you for the effort, Roland. Unfortunately, due to a change in sponsorship arrangements, FlyFpvSa could not participate. The General Manager of the AeCSA indicated that from next year spectators would be allowed to attend this event and, as it will be a great opportunity for the SAMAA to showcase our hobby, much more effort and planning will be devoted to it. As previously announced, Mr Richard Becker resigned as Chairman of the AeCSA. During last year Mr Alan Evan-Hanes was appointed as his replacement. AeCSA also recently saw the sudden resignation of its long serving chairman, LtCol. Jeffery Earl. This position was filled by the Vice Chairman, Mr Paul Lastrucci. The AeCSA AGM will take place on 27 March 2018 and Mr Lastrucci has been nominated the new Chairman of the AeCSA with Mr Rob Jonkers as Vice Chairman. I know both gentleman well and have all the confidence that they can lead, guide and bring harmony to the AeCSA which has been experiencing some difficult times recently. During last year, the Director of Civil Aviation, Dr Poppie Khoza, also gave notice that the Recreational Aviation Administration of South Africa will be dissolved, and all functions and staff will be reincorporated into the SACAA. This was met with very mixed reactions from the AeCSA Sections and has deteriorated into a rather unpleasant breakdown in relationship between AeCSA Exco, AeCSA Sections and RAASA management. In my capacity as Chairman of the SAMAA, I have always enjoyed the support of RAASA, however our requirements from them are rather simple as we do not have Aircraft Certification or Pilot Licensing as most other sections have. During last year, the AeCSA drafted a letter to the Minister of Transport regarding the RAASA saga and sought the mandate of the AeCSA sections to send such a letter. However, many of the AeCSA Section heads indicated that they did not approve of such a letter sent on their behalf to the Minister of Transport. Nevertheless, the AeCSA Exco went ahead to send the letter and erroneously indicating that they carried the mandate of all sections. On behalf of the SAMAA, I also indicated that I do not approve of the letter being sent as the matter could be SAMAA News Issue 1 of 2018 - Page 5

resolved between AeCSA, RAASA and the SACAA and does not require the assistance of the minister. This letter also cast a bad light on the individual entities' ability to manage their affairs professionally and pro-actively. These actions obviously caused further breakdown in relationship between the AeCSA Sections and the AeCSA Exco and saw the formation of an Aviation Recreational Organisation Collective that proceeded to seek audience with senior officials at SACAA. I participated in this process to protect and further the cause of the SAMAA. I believe that within the next couple of weeks the ARO Collective will call a meeting with the CEO of RAASA and the Chairman of the AeCSA to try and restore confidence and work towards an amicable solution for the AeCSA Sections regarding the re-incorporation of RAASA into the SACAA. With all the strife going on at the moment it seems that Project 24, the amendment of the CATS 24, headed up by RAASA, has cast anchor and came to a halt. As the SAMAA has a vested interest in Project 24, I requested the permission of the RAASA Management at a recent RAASA Industry Liaison Forum to withdraw from Project 24 and submit our amendments regarding the technical specifications of our models directly to the Civil Aviation Regulation Committee. This was met with their approval and an undertaking to support our bid at CARCOM. At the moment we are finalising all documentation and hope to have it tabled at CARCOM on 10 May 2018 when they meet again. As the SAMAA does not have an appointed seat at CARCOM the application will be submitted on our behalf by the AeCSA. Business at the SAMAA office has been smooth sailing and with the introduction of an assistant to the General Manager I believe we were able to provide a more professional and expedited service. Membership renewals and proficiency applications are processed in minimum time. Maintaining our database accuracy is an ongoing process and we now record the AGM dates of all clubs, so we can contact them after their AGM to update all relevant details. The Letter Of Procedure process as published in Air Navigation Regulation 5.5 which required certain clubs to obtain LOP's with their local Air Traffic Service Units, and which was managed by Linda, has basically been completed. Some of the ATSU's have not responded to several requests from either the relevant club or the SAMAA office and Mr Dave Joubert, the Airspace Efficiency Manager at Air Traffic Navigation Services, has been informed accordingly. I also recently became aware that some flying sites as published in ENR 5.5 have been limited to 150ft and have requested the assistance of Mr Neil de Lange from RAASA to resolve this and obtain height alleviation. The update of the SAMAA Manual of Procedures remains an outstanding item as we have discovered that many contradictions exist in the publication. We also would like to simplify it so that, as my predecessor, Mr Lionel Brink, wisely stated, the paperwork required to fly a model does not weigh more than the model. I have been offered the support of our SIG Chairman, Mr Danie Potgieter, who will assist in this process. The proficiency system will also be re-evaluated as it seems that some people still do not take it seriously and do not adhere to the strict and specific requirements of the proficiency tests. There is a consideration to introduce an expiry period on Gold and Instructor proficiencies with a possible less-cumbersome re-test requirement. I would like to applaud all the members and clubs who were involved in Fly-Ins and Air Shows this last year as there was an amazing compliance from all involved. Linda at the SAMAA office has taken the initiative to draft and publish an “Event Requirement pamphlet and it will be distributed electronically to all members and specifically to Club Committees, so everyone can be au fait with the minimum requirements. Thank you, Linda, for this initiative. As I indicated last year in my Chairman's Report, the SMC will take a zero-tolerance attitude to non-compliance of safety rules and regulations at public events. I can report that we had to deal with only one incident during the entire year and I believe it was resolved amicably and would like to thank all parties concerned for their co-operation. I would like to reiterate to all members the importance of always putting safety first, especially when the public is present, and that there is no substitute for safety. Since my nomination and ratification as Chairman of the SAMAA, I have been privileged to have Mr Johan Ehlers (Snr) as part of the team, being the FAI representative. For the past five years Johan attended the CIAM Plenary Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland every year. However, unfortunately this April will be the last time that Johan will represent the SAMAA as he indicated that he would no longer be available. I want to thank Johan for his dedication and willingness to support our sport and must mention that Johan always fulfilled this duty on a shoestring budget. For the last two years Johan was also the Chairman of the Scale F4 Sub-Committee and the SAMAA supported this cause as it is a massive compliment and honour for the SAMAA and South Africa. At a recent SMC meeting it was decided that, since Johan is no longer available as the FAI/CIAM representative, the SAMAA will as part of a cost saving campaign no longer send a delegate to the Plenary Meeting. I have requested Johan, when he attends his last meeting in April, to seek the support of the British Representative and negotiate an arrangement that he will carry a proxy on behalf of South Africa. Further to this arrangement, the SMC will create a provision in the budget in the event that an urgent matter arises to be dealt with at a plenary meeting. As the SMC's term comes to an end at this AGM, the General Manager embarked on a process last year of calling for nominations to the SAMAA Management Committee. The Vice Chairman, Mr Johan Groenewald, the Club Representative, Mr Boet Denysshen and I were the only current SMC Elected members who made ourselves available and were nominated accordingly. We received an additional nomination from Mr Johan Blom which was also accepted. As the SMC has not received more than five nominations, the SAMAA will not have to enter into an election process. Also, as previously reported to the AeCSA by Mr Keith Nicholls, he once again informed me that according to him we have not followed the correct procedure. I can confirm that in accordance with the Constitution of SAMAA, we have complied with every aspect of the requirements and it has been sanctioned in writing by the auditors of the SAMAA. In 2015, after certain allegations were tabled against me and the SMC at the time by Mr Nicholls and his associates to the AeCSA, the AeCSA declared the process as defined in our MOP invalid as it was never approved by the SAMAA auditors as dictated in the constitution. This time it has been approved by the SAMAA auditors. As vacancies existed within the SMC, the SMC did not see any reason to wait for the Ratification of the SMC at the 2018 AGM to involve Mr Johan Blom in matters concerning the SAMAA and therefore co-opted him with immediate effect in accordance with the constitution. I would like to welcome Mr Johan Blom and look forward to his support and the value that he will bring to our organisation. As one vacancy still exists, the SMC will deliberate this vacancy in due course and possibly co-opt another member. The term of office for the Treasurer will also come to an end soon and the SMC will advertise this position in the SAMAA News and appoint a suitable applicant. Unfortunately, for the first time since I joined the SMC our financial performance in relation to the budget that was set did not meet expectations. I believe the reason for the under-performance was due to us expecting a bigger influx of members from the FPV side SAMAA News Issue 1 of 2018 - Page 6

that seems to have slowed down. Overall, we did still come out positive in what I believe to have been an extremely difficult year financially for most. We have taken a rather conservative approach to the budget amendment for 2018 and hope to reach target. Overall the SAMAA is in a very healthy financial state with approximately R2 000 000.00 reserve that includes the International Participation Fund. I also take note of the decline in our hobby, not just in South Africa but worldwide, as instant gratification seems to be the flavour of the incoming generations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Daniel Ralefeta, Juanita Smith, Boet Denysschen, Johan Groenewald, Danie Potgieter, Linda Dold and Bob Skinner for their loyal support this last year and hope that as a team we can make a difference and take the SAMAA to the next level during our next term. This will be my last term as Chairman of the SAMAA as dictated by the constitution. I will, during this tenure, start with a succession campaign so that when the time comes for the new Chairman to take over, the transition will be smooth. Most importantly I would like to thank our members for their loyal support and for making our organisation the valuable organisation it is.

Last year, a life member of the SAMAA, Neil Allen, commented that it may be possible to enhance the readability of SAMAA News by having the columns wider, and perhaps even a single, wide column of text. I played around with the format, and it still allows flexibility to place the pics in a variety of widths. A test revealed that it indeed may be better for tablets and android phones in this new format. Linda and I have explored the possibility of publishing a more regular, shorter “news bulletin”, something that Neil also suggested. It can still contain adverts of our dealers, but it gives more opportunity for fresh news. We will continue to look at ways of making the SAMAA communication even easier, and more relevant. At the end of January, I had the opportunity to judge the Two Oceans Slope Soaring Aerobatic event, with Stuart Nix and Andrew Anderson. I was again pleasantly surprised at the high standard of flying, and the top three pilots in the Expert class really pulled out all their skills. I am amazed at the camaraderie that exists among the pilots in the Slope community...no trouble to lend a plane to a fellow competitor whose machine just failed. In the background there may be disagreements between pilots, but none of it showed at any time during the event. I received pics and a report from Darren Semple and Steve Meusel, and in the next issue there will be a full report. I took a few days’ leave, and travelled up the West Coast, visiting a few clubs along the way. Had a blast visiting the Citrusdal Radio Flyers and meeting Kenny Beaton. Then a very interesting visit to a facility (Xsit) that cultivates sterilised False Codling Moths, that are released by a drone (FlyH2 Aerospace) flying an automated path through citrus orchards. This results in disease-free citrus products. The drone project is under the wing of Onno Huyser, Mark van Wyk and Louis Genade. William and I then paid a visit to Kevin Langeveldt and Ron Selley, and the St Helena Bay Radio Flyers. Overnighted at the wellappointed Masada Guest House at Longacres. Many thanks, Dave! We “inspected” the slope soaring site at Spreeuwalle, soon to be registered Then on to the Tygerberg MFC, and the Boland MAC, before a great lunch at the Stellenbosch Model Aircraft Academy at Wild Clover (Brewery). Our stay for the TOSS competition was at the beautiful home of Peter and Riana Beretta at Lake Michelle; simply superb hospitality. It struck us just how dire the water situation is in the Western Cape...I have new appreciation for a 2-litre shower (not 2-minutes!), and the waste water is put to good use for flushing the toilet.

Club visits & news

Donkerhoek RC Club is a newly formed RC venue, and recently registered with SAMAA. The venue is situated about 30km or so outside Nelspruit, reached from the R539 route to Sabie. The area is known as Rhenoster Hoek. The farm on which the club and runway is situated, belongs to Johan Roets, a very well known modeller in the Lowveld area.

Boet Denysschen View towards the valley, with the shade-netting runway.

The runway is 400m long by 11m wide, and runs along a valley in front of you. The sun is on your right in the early morning but moves away without being too much of an obstacle. The runway is extremely flat with absolutely no humps and bumps. There is a 90-degree T-off runway which is only for emergency landings. The surface was graded and compacted and then covered with 100% shade netting.

The netting is stretched tight and then pegged down all around the sides with 6” nails and large washers spaced 300mm apart. Not just is the surface exciting to fly on, but so is the colour; about 90% of the main runway is blue, with a small section white in colour. After a serious downpour, there is absolutely no water puddles on the runway and no mud that comes through the shade net surface. The smooth surface is very friendly on wheels as it is a non-abrasive surface. There is a very large barn that serves as storage for aircraft; it hosts two ablution facilities with hot and cold water as well as showers. There is a kitchen with fridges as well as stoves for making coffee and preparing food. Planes are parked under a very large covered area, and pilots can find welcome relief under this structure. There are also five dome tents for those who want a place to sleep over. The farm is extremely safe with 24-hour video surveillance and a 24-hour armed reaction force. I visited Donkerhoek RC over the weekend of 17/18 February. There were close to 20 pilots who came to fly, some who just visited from Nelspruit and Lydenburg. The venue is a long time dream of Johan Roets and he has many more long term dreams for the venue. A long time friend from Tzaneen, Malan Moolman, will be helping Johan promote this fine venue. The gate is open for any paid-up SAMAA member to drop in, come and visit or they may want to come and fly. The runway and surface is of such quality that you can fly any type of aircraft with ease. For further info or directions please contact Johan Roets 082-903-2967 or Malan Moolman 083-306-0773. It is a perfect venue for a getaway for a family, as there are lots of attractions close by, ie Sabie, Nelspruit, Kruger Park, Sudwala Caves, to mention just a few.

SAMPE News SA Model Parachute Enthusiasts

Pieter Mulder

The South African Model Parachutist Enthusiasts (SAMPE) held their founders meeting on 13 January 2018 and officially kicked off as a Special Interest Group (SIG) with Pieter Mulder in the lead, ably supported by Hannes Hatting and Francois van Heerden. The SIG was registered with SAMAA on 19 Feb 2018. That took care of the official stuff and the fun started. For those new to RC Skydivers, maybe some background information. RC Skydivers are delivered by other RC Pilots with crafts equipped to carry the jumpers. The craft pilot then releases the jumper at a specific height and place, as instructed by the Jumper pilot. Once the Craft pilot as released the jumper, the jumper is RC-controlled by his own pilot, hence at least two pilots required for RC Skydiving. Loaded...

...and ready...

...to go!

The SAMPE crowd has been very busy since the beginning of the year with successful days at Pretoria Radio Flyers (PRF) a boogie at Warthogs Radio Flyers (WRF), and various other clubs. The plan is to have at least one monthly gathering at PRF and invite jumpers from and for any other event or club. SAMPE SIG also introduced two currency ratings as Free Fall Solo Pilot and the other is Instructor. They will be working hard to engage everyone and get these new ratings assigned and implemented. The next big step is planned to compete for the first time in the SAMAA combined power nationals, which is scheduled from 27 April to 1 May 2018.

FPV Racing at Midstream

It was another very well attended event with 31 pilots coming out to race, at the Midstream cricket and golf grounds. Only 11 of these entries where seasoned Open Class pilots, while almost double that number was Foundation class pilots. A whole bunch of new faces just gave testimony to the interest in this category of the hobby.

Thunderstorms where predicted on the day that had us all holding our breath. The morning started out a bit cloudy but luckily turned into a blue-sky afternoon with excellent racing conditions. The venue was Anthon Meiring truly one of the best location we have hosted a race yet. A green Beautiful facilities at the Midstream Estate for Round 5 of the Gauteng League. cricket pitch with soft grass provided some cushioning for the inevitable crashes, power outlets for charging and timing equipment and even a restaurant that served amazing food and ice-cold sodas. The restaurant is very well supported by Midstream residents that resulted in a massive crowd of spectators throughout the day. They were very interested in the hobby and asked a lot of questions. I’m sure we will see some new pilots soon from the Midstream area. We built another exceptional racing track that covered 470 metres per lap. We introduced a new obstacle called a dive/gravity gate. The obstacle is a horizontal gate, raised a couple of metres off the ground. Pilots are forced to dive the gate from an angle and then quickly pull up to prevent a collision with mother earth. The pilots really liked the new obstacle and got the hang of it quickly. We tried a different racing format where six pilots take to the skies, per round. To achieve this, we reduced our VTX (Video Transmitter) output to 25mw instead of the normal 200mw. This worked surprisingly well and we will continue to do so in the future if the location allows us to. Running this format allows us to get more flying in, especially with the number of attendees we are seeing. We experienced a bit of difficulties with our timing system that put us slightly behind schedule. Luckily one of our young pilots (Luke Winterton) loves tinkering with computers and had his own home-built system with him on the day for testing. His system worked very well and we will be incorporating it in our events going forward. In summary, it was a great day of racing and everyone had a blast. I want to thank Midstream for opening their facilities to us as well as our sponsors, RC Edge, Flying Robot, and Sean from Pro Audio. Congratulations to all the pilots that took a podium position on the day! We look forward to seeing you at the next race!

Port Elizabeth Radio Flyers Fly-in

Brian Martin

A very short report regarding the PERF fly-in held 15,16, 17 February. Actually, other than our visitors from Cape Town and the West Coast, not too much to report. Some excellent flying was witnessed when Gareth Roberts treated us to a number of displays flying his Mirage and Air World Gee Bee R3. Friday was a good day weather-wise, but being a "working day", very few members attended. Saturday was a pretty blustery day, but some good displays by Michael Basson, Gareth Roberts, and Andre le Roux (from Oudtshoorn), treated those in attendance to some very proficient displays of flying skills. Dave Allam had a beautiful ASH 31 glider which we would have loved to have seen fly, but the wind on Saturday made it unsafe to try it. But thanks for bringing it Dave.

André le Roux of Oudtshoorn flew this Boomerang.

Antoinette did a sterling job of providing egg and bacon breakfasts on Friday and Saturday, with really good lunchtime burgers. She got some really valuable help from Annelize le Roux from Oudtshoorn on Saturday, for which we are really grateful, and to the club members who pitched in, providing assistance where required, we appreciate the help. Our chairman, Glyn RoseChristie was seen mopping floors, but asked that his wife should never find out. Saturday night saw much merriment at a great social braai. Lots of jokes and stories of past flying experiences were told. Sunday proved to be perfect flying weather, but with Saturday having been windy, our visitors packed away on Saturday evening and drifted off home on Sunday. Possibly a blessing in disguise since the Micton’s had vehicle problems and the journey home took much longer than anticipated. To all the visitors who made the trip to PE, and made the fly-in a great flying spectacle, PERF extend our sincerest thanks.

Henley Fly-in & Jet Day

This event from 23 to 25 February was open to all SAMAA members. The event started on Friday morning but visitors pulled in on Thursday to erect caravans and tents. Friday we had a good day, and the weather was great although rather cloudy, but this did not stop anyone flying. By Friday evening the place was a hive of activity. The hangar was packed with aircraft for night time storage. The Henley kitchen was up and running since lunch time already, serving lunch. When evening came, flying stopped and fires were lit and it was time to braai. A nice social evening was spent around the braai fires. The kitchen was serving light snacks, braai packs and liquid refreshments.

Boet Denysschen Variety of aircraft lined up for flight.

On Saturday we were met by yet another awesome day with flying starting around 06:00. The day started with some low clouds but as the day progressed it got clearer and hotter. Many flights were flown throughout the day with more and more pilots arriving as the day continued. Late Saturday evening pilots with fixed-wing aircraft started packing away, as the Sunday was set aside for jets only. The evening weather was awesome, with once again many braai fires billowing smoke into the night sky.

Sunday morning, all who slept at the club were up early, ready for another exciting day. The weather in Pretoria and Joburg was apparently not so good, but at Henley it was perfect. The first jet flight took place early in the morning and was non-stop thereafter for the entire day. Overall it was three days of awesome weather, awesome flying, and time was spent with old friends and many new friends were made. Pilots attended from near and far, young and old, with the youngest being Waldo and Daniel, and the oldest Brian Smith from Kimberly (well, he is a fossil!). Pilots travelled from as far as Richards Bay, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Klerksdorp, North West, Secunda to name just a few. Marius Vosloo and family ran the kitchen for three days, with food being served as a take-away or sit-down in the hangar; the food was awesome. Thanks guys, it was appreciated by all. The venue was spotless, with the grass well groomed around the entire area. The areas around the hangar, lapa, toilets, and camping site was well lit up with floodlights. The runways are in very good condition as is the surrounding area which makes flying much more fun. A special thanks to all who travelled from near and far to attend the event. It is flying friends like you that make these events such a huge success. It is not about what plane you fly or how you fly, as we are all part of the same RC community, and are there to support and encourage each other. Thanks again and hope to see you all at the next event at Henley Model Airfield and Family Entertainment, surely the best RC venue in the country. For all the campers, next time there will be proper ablution facilities for all. Just for the record, a total of 47 pilots participated in this awesome weekend of flying, and great times spent with friends.

The queue was always full; pilots enjoyed glorious weather and great flying conditions. Avanti S being prepared.

The HMAFE hangar provided secure and safe overnight shelter for aeries.

The first Gauteng regional competition of 2018 took place on Sunday the 18th of February at Henley Aero Modelers. This was a great venue to get 2018 started, as it will also be the venue for the 2018 SAMAA combined power nationals which is due to take place at the end of April.

Large Scale Aerobatics

The organizers decided to have a slightly later start than usual to accommodate competitors that had to travel a bit further. By 08:30 there were 8 pilots ready for the pilot briefing and eager to get flying! A slight crosswind during the first round gave a few of the pilots a hard time keeping their line, luckily due to no time constraints the judges had a chance to chat to the pilots after each flight and give them some tips and pointer. Round 1 was competed just before lunch time giving the pilot’s a great opportunity to make use of the catering that was kindly provide by Henley Aero modelers who gave everyone a large variety of foods and beverages to choice. After lunch it was time to get round 2 going, fortunately the wind had almost completely died down by midday and gave us some great flying conditions. This showed as all the pilots Improved their scores in round 2.

Johnny van den Berg

Hawker Typhoon

Hierdie is nie my eerste Typhoon nie.

So, DLE55RA was dit toe nou. Ignition switch is 'n DLE. Ek wou dit nie so laat nie, so ek moes 'n ander plan maak. Alles goed wat reggemaak kan word, so more was nog 'n dag. Dit is Paul Smit se werk. Die take-off roll was redelik reguit - baie beter as die vorige aand se taxi trails.
