competitions. It became expensive for single SIGs to run national championships and the competitors had to carry this financial burden of a high entry fee if a sponsor was not on board. At the 2014 MAASA Nats for RC Aerobatics in Himeville, an impromptu arrangement of pylon racing was promoted by Danie Potgieter and a few of the other entrants. This immediately found favour with many of the participants, and the idea of a combined Nats was reborn. SAMAA chairman Marthinus Potgieter tasked the management group of the SIGs to arrange the first Combined Nats, and the PC Pelser airport in Klerksdorp was identified as a suitable venue.

Most of the planning and administration for the Combined Nats was done in the SAMAA office.

In 2001, the SAMAA structure for its competitive activities changed with the adoption of the new constitution. The various sub-committees then under the SAMAA umbrella, became autonomous Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and gradually, these SIGs started arranging their own national championships. It served a purpose in those early years, since the concept of a compendium nationals had its own problems: finding an organiser (club), arranging for a flying site that was large enough, financing such a large operation, etc. However, competitive activity has seen a steady decline in the last few years, and without exception, all the SIGs reported lower participation in

Now, there are probably many other venues that could host an event like the Nats. The Klerksdorp Radio Flyers had previously arranged a Nats at the same venue, and we knew there was enough space available. Cliff Lotter, a former SAMAA member, runs a flight school on the airfield and with his help, and the support from the KRF members, many of the logistical issues were taken care of. An organising/steering committee was formed, with Herman Weber as event director. He was supported by Bob and Marietjie Skinner, Danie Potgieter, and Burt Botha, and each SIG chairman would organise his specific event. Judges could be shared, which had a cost-saving effect. The date identified was the long weekend of 13 to 16 June. In hindsight, this could have been moved earlier in the year to provide more daylight hours and possibly warmer conditions, but this will be considered for future events. All the pre-event administration was handled by the SAMAA office, and meetings with the SIGs were arranged on a regular basis. Financing this operation was accomplished by each of the SIGs pledging their annual grant of R6 000. Aerial Concepts and Dean Grobbelaar came on board as a title sponsor, and with a few more donations by Al’s Hobbies, Pepsico/Simba and

Adridizzi, the organisers were able to keep the entry fee manageable. Our grateful thanks to these sponsors...you invested in the Nats so that we could make it financially viable. It was still not a cheap exercise for competitors since they had to travel to get to the venue, and pay for accommodation and food. By the closing date, we were able to draw up a tentative schedule, and some care was taken to ensure that an entrant was not required to be in two places at once. You can image this took some doing, with six disciplines, multiple classes, and 60 entrants spread out over a 1km distance. On Saturday 6th June, the organisers and SIG chairmen met at PC Pelser, to mark out the flight lines, look at the various options, check out the facilities, etc. This was a very valuable exercise and helped a great deal with the planning and execution of the Nats.

Painting, again, Bob? One degree of 360 painted with lime on the loose-chip control line circle. Percy Attfield (left) and Theuns Hattingh doing the other 359 degrees! Site meeting a week before the Nats proved valuable.

D-day arrived and at 18:00 on Friday12 June, and competitors, officials, and organisers assembled in the clubhouse at PC Pelser airport for a pilot’s briefing. The event was opened with a prayer by Sebastiano Sacca. Herman Weber handled the intro very professionally and the SIG chairmen each briefed the competitors on what was required. Saturday morning dawned misty, but the weak winter sun soon burned through and activity started by 09:00, with flying at the Control Line site in front of the control tower/clubhouse, and RC Aerobatics to the south on one of the cross taxiways.

Herman Weber was constantly on the go, collecting scores, taking refreshments to the judges, solving flight line clashes, etc. Vuka Scuta “Ladybird” came in handy. Pylon racing pit area and racing course in background.

The 2015 control-line Nats was held from the 13th to 16th of June at the PC Pelser airfield in Klerksdorp together with the R/C power model classes. I must admit that some of us in CLASA were rather dubious of joining in on this idea. We have been rather spoilt by having our Nats at the Barnstormers club for many years now, and we knew that this was going to cost the vast majority of us a lot more money with the added travel and accommodation costs. The idea of being with a much larger group of model plane enthusiasts was however, very attractive. The other concern was of course that it was to be held in winter, and Klerksdorp is really cold in the early mornings. In fact it was around -3°C every morning, but fortunately the weather was kind to us for the entire event, with really light wind each day, so by around 10h00 it usually warmed up quite nicely. As things turned out, this was a highly successful and very enjoyable Nats for us and C/L was well represented and promoted. I have already received requests for plans and C/L stuff from many who attended the events and were impressed with the round and round stuff. After the events we all agreed

that this really worked well for us and we would be interested in doing it again next year...with some reservation about the time of year! We had six entries in Expert stunt and four entries in Novice stunt. We sure missed some of our regular faces like Nic van der Westhuizen, Colin Paine and Peter Locke, but we do understand their circumstances. Maybe next year we will see them again. We only had two racing teams and two combat entries, and although this was not enough for official Nats events, we ran the events anyway. Both combat and racing are big crowd pleasing events so we will work really hard this year to improve the interest in them. Expert Stunt The weather, as I mentioned above was really kind to us, so we were able to fly a total of 5 rounds of expert and also novice stunt. We were also blessed with two good and experienced judges, Bob Skinner and John Withers. I say “good weather” but early in the mornings the wind was dead still, with the occasional breeze that always comes up exactly opposite to where the pilot

set the judges. It is rather interesting to note that for C/L stunt it is not easy to fly in dead air, because of line tension issues and also hitting your own wake turbulence that is not blown away by wind. I have seen stunt models actually roll in towards the pilot when this happens! I was lucky in round 4 to have “stunt heaven” where there is a light breeze that stayed in one direction and also away from the sun, so I managed one of my best flights ever.

The Hangar 9 PT-19 flown with skill by Danie Potgieter...took first place in Novice Stunt.

Electron of Keith Renecle, with modifications to try an improve performance. In the background is Theo Kleynhans’ Mustang.

My old Electron that has been rebuilt a few times, has been flying so badly since last year even though I have tried some really good trimming methods. Then a few weeks before the Nats I thought that the flap area may just be too much on this design so I lowered the flap throw and increased the elevator throw. Bingo! It just flew so much better and was a lot more competitive than before. “Judge” Skinner who has seen me fly for many years commented later that this was by far the best flight he had witnessed from me, so I was rather chuffed at that. My second flight also felt really good to me but when I saw my scores I was disappointed......until I was asked why I had left out the square eights! This maneuver has a K-Factor of 18, so that was pretty useless. I put it down to severe “Old-Timers” disease! Roston Dugmore jnr or “Rostie” as he is known to us, flew in expert stunt once again, plus F3A pattern and large scale aerobatics. He did incredibly well in all of these events, and placed a very good 3rd in expert stunt with very little practice. He is the present junior world champ in F3A pattern and will be defending his title in Switzerland in August this year. We wish him all the very best over there, and after watching him perform in this Nats, we are really sure that he will defend his title successfully.

Theo Kleynhans settling down for six laps of inverted flight. Keith Renecle providing assistance.

In second place was the hard working Theo Kleyhans who was last year's winner, who was flying his .40-powered Brodak P-51 Mustang. Both Theo and Danie flew the complete novice stunt pattern, and Danie won by a mere 13.5 points! It was a great battle between these two, but the real star of the show was newcomer Theuns Hattingh from a farm nearby in Ventersdorp. In all of my years in coaching the novice pilots, I have never seen such determination and dedication. Theuns basically taught himself to build and fly C/L models and was really isolated from the C/L scene, although a few modellers did help him on occasions. He came to our last competition at Barnstormers with his .40-powered Sig Twister that just did not fly well, and unfortunately it crashed in practice before the competition. I had made a basic .40-size electric stunt trainer that I called “Sport-E” (Like sporty) and Theuns bought it from me. It was trimmed quite well and with the electric system, it is a case of switch on and fly, so he was able to do a lot of practice back home on the farm. This all sounds good and well, but...the only real spare time from work on the farm was at night...and it is winter! Theuns flies on his own grass circle in front of his house, and he installed some lights on the house roof to shine on the circle. He also added some reflective plastic to the model to make it easier to see, and using this system he flew many hours of practice each night. Of course when you are trying to learn quicker, you will more likely than not have the inevitable prangs, and this happened to Theuns more than once. Each time he repaired the plane and carried on. His last prang was really bad and also it happened on the night before the first round of the Nats. Theuns did a serious repair job and tested it at around 01:00 at night...or should I say early in the morning! With this damaged model he was able to complete four of the five rounds and place 3rd. What an achievement, and well done to Theuns!

Warren Smith carrying father Leonard’s 40 Watt-2 back to the pit area.

The other hot-shot kid in C/L stunt is Warren Smith, and he flew his 40 Watt stunt plane into 2nd place with very good and consistent flying. Warren's dad Len placed 4th with his 40Watt-2. Both of these 40 Watt models were designed and built by Peter Locke of Grahamstown. Percy Attfield flew his big Centurion XL into 5th place. It was good see Dirk Meyer flying once again and he flew the smaller Eze 25 into 6th place. 40 Watt, flown with great skill by Warren Smith to achieve third place.

A beaming Theuns Hattingh with the third-placing Sport-E. At right is a pic of the Sport-E in pristine condition, before many re-builds. Determination shown by Theuns is a shining example for others.

Conrad Cloete also entered in novice stunt, but only attempted one round, but in any case it was good of Conrad to add to the numbers. He came all the way from Cape Town and we really appreciate his support through the years. Centurion XL of Percy Attfield, placed 5th.

Novice Stunt In years gone by, the Novice Stunt event was normally the highlight for me. We had a lot of kids at that time so it was especially nice for me to see their progress. This year we only had the “older kids” but it was nonetheless a very competitive event. One of the R/C guys that decided to have a go at flying C/L stunt was Danie Potgieter, who has regularly won in many R/C events like pattern and funfly, plus a few others. He bought an ARF Hanger 9 PT 19 powered by a .36 glow engine and decided to join in the fun of flying in circles. He had so much fun that he won the event!

Team Racing We had two teams for Class 2, or Slow Goodyear racing and the same teams for Open Goodyear. The teams were Dirk Meyer and Conrad Cloete, and brothers Alan and Lionel Smith. One heat was attempted in Slow Goodyear but Alan and Lionel withdrew due to a problem with their model which in practice was going like a rocket. In Open Goodyear we saw two 100-lap heats and then a 200-lap final with both models finishing the race. In the second heat there was only a 5 second difference between the faster team of the Smiths, and the Meyer/Cloete team, so everyone was looking forward to

SAM A A News Issue 3 of 2015 - Page 3

seeing an equally close final. The model of Dirk and Conrad however experienced problems in the final and had a few slow pitstops. The race was won by Alan and Lionel Smith with a time of 8:58:60.

Conrad Cloete pitting for Dirk Meyer. Duo have competed several times at international level.

The PC Pelser Polka, here performed by Alan Smith (blue T-shirt) and Dirk Meyer.

Combat The two entries in combat were Dirk Meyer and Lionel Smith, and once again this looked like it could be an exciting event and also a nice spectator thing as well, but unfortunately it only lasted about a minute and a half and ended with two bust combat planes. It would have been nice to see a few heats just to promote the event! We have made a firm commitment to improving the numbers in racing and combat this year, so that we can have both events with more entries. In conclusion I would like to say a big thank you to all of those that helped to make this Nats the big success that it was. A special thanks to those that came out to the site the week before to set everything up. To Bob Skinner who worked like a trojan through everything, and also judged stunt every day for us. To John Withers for judging stunt as well. We really appreciate your ongoing help with judging. To Percy Attfield for his work the week before and then during the event and also for running the AGM. To Theuns Hattingh for coming out to help the week before, and to Theo Kleynhans who just helps with anything and everything. Thank you to the sponsors who helped to make this event the success it was.

by André Stockwell. Photos by Andrew de Beer, Jessica Potgieter, André Stockwell, Marietjie Skinner. Clinton Carter-Brown placed fourth, the red-and-white Citrin bi-plane being his first choice. Bi-Side will be his back up for the coming F3A World Championship in Switzerland.

Precision Aerobatics and Large Scale Aerobatics shared the same flight line at the southern end of the flying field. It provided enough separation from the other activities taking place at the northern end of the field. A total of 22 pilots from all over the country entered for Precision Aerobatics. The biggest class entry was Masters with eight contestants. Arriving at the contest site on Friday morning, we met up with Stuart Nix, Cobus Malan, Rodney Potter and Ozzie Parenzee - all from the Western Cape. It was great to see such a large entry from the Cape Province. Later in the afternoon, they were joined by the WC judges Ludwig Steyn and Martin Knoetzen. During one of Rodney’s practice flights, the Hacker Q80 and the aircraft separated in mid-air, due to possible resonance, ripping the complete nose section off the model. Fortunately he could land the plane, but some damage was caused to the undercarriage and the wings. This was his second misfortune with an Asyuler.

Flying of precision aerobatics started on Saturday morning in near-perfect weather conditions, which prevailed for most of the contest. It was great having Jacques Botha in the Sportsman class competing with a Stik. His scores improved throughout the contest, and he posted his best score of 59.67% during round two. Well done, Jacques! We hope to see more of you in the future. The intermediate class was a close battle, with Hugo Erasmus and Chris O’Connell alternating positions every round. Chris finally took top honours with 63.3%, and 2977 normalised points. Hugo finished second with 60.8% and 2941 normalised points.

The nose of Rodney Potter’s Asyuler after the Q80 decided it did not like the marriage!

David Austin also had a mishap on the practice day, damaging his beautiful Spark. During Friday afternoon, Danie Potgieter Snr did the model processing according to the new rules. Many aerobatic pilots also competed in some of the other disciplines, being Pylon Racing, Control Line, Large Scale, Jets, and Scale, making it a very busy contest for them. Our judges for the contest were Chris Theron (chief judge), and Ivan Olivier (both Gauteng), Bruce Clark (KZN), Ludwig Steyn and Martin Knoetzen (Western Cape), and Sebastiano Sacca (North West). Danie Potgieter Snr was the flight line director. All MAASA classes were contested at the Nats.

Judges and CD (from left) Ivan Olivier, Sebastiano Sacca, Ludwig Steyn, Danie Potgieter, Bruce Clark, Martin Knoetzen, and Chris Theron.

In the Advanced class, Cobus Malan was flying his own-designed and built pattern ship called “Passion”, powered by a YS 185 4-stroke. He achieved an average of 53.7% or 2620 normalised points. Nico Erasmus set the pace in Advanced, winning all four rounds with a final score of 62.7% and 3000 normalised points.

Nico Erasmus (holding transmitter) flew consistently to win all four rounds. WindS aircraft is a few years old but still in immaculate condition. With him is his son Hugo, a valuable part of the team.

In the Masters class, Ozzie’s motor failed in his second flight, putting him out of the contest. Neil Allen’s wing tube was damaged after his first flight, and he could not continue. Danie Potgieter, Michael Sacca, Craig Bell, and Burt Botha battled it out for top honours. Danie showed class from the start, winning the first three rounds, finishing with 70.3%. Michael Sacca won the last round with a 69.33% flight, and finished in second place with only 1% separating them. In third place was Craig Bell with 65.6%, followed by Burt Botha with 58.6%.

Six pilots competed in the F3A class. Wolfgang Matt’s Citrin bi-plane with the Brenner contra-drive was the model of choice. André was flying the Sensation bi-plane also fitted with a Brenner contra-drive. Calvin was flying the Opium monoplane designed by Günther Ulsamer, and Matthys was flying a Pegasus (H Hatta). André took an early lead, winning the first two rounds, followed by Roston, Clinton, and Grant. Calvin won the third round closely followed by André. André won the fourth round, closely followed by Roston. The final results weere André with a score of 74.9% and 3000 normalised points; Roston was second with 72.8% and 2978 normalised points, and Calvin was third with 69.4% and 2833 normalised points. Congratulations to all the podium-finishers, as well as to all the pilots who competed in the Nats. You are all winners and we hope that you achieved your personal goals. We would like to thank our judges: Chris, Ivan, Bruce, Ludwig, Sebastiano, and Martin, for judging and braving the cold early mornings. Without them the Nats would not be possible. We would also like to wish André, Roston, Calvin, Clinton, and team manager Matthys, all the best for the world championships in Switzerland.

Grant Brook assisting Chris O’Connell, before starting up for one of his competition flights.

Roston Dugmore will be defending the Junior World Championship title. in Switzerland. Roston, we wish you all the best, and bring back the silverware! Unfortunately Ivan Olivier had to decline his invitation to judge at the World Championships. He works for himself, and he has just landed a large contract that simply demands his full attention. Ivan competed in his first world championship in 1973, as well as the following four WCs. Ivan also judged at the 2013 WC here in South Africa. Judging at a world championships is the pinnacle in a flying and judging career. Latly we would like to thank the Nats organising committee: Herman Weber, Bob and Marietjie Skinner, Danie Potgieter, and Burt Botha, for hosting a very successful combined power Nats. We all enjoyed it very much and look forward to seeing you all at the next one.

From the office In this report, I’m not going to bore you with the post office inefficiency. It is clear that this institution is on its last legs, simply propped up by the government. Sad though...it used to be functional at one stage! This leaves us with a problem of membership cards that are not delivered to members. One solution is for members to use their log-in to the SAMAA membership site. Once logged in, go to “View Own Details”. On the right, there will be a panel where your details are shown. Simply click on “Print” and a paper membership card will be printed. This is good enough to prove to your club administrators that your SAMAA membership is up to date.

Wing bags & Tx cases Protective wing bags made for all types of wings. Made from waterproof canvas material, with zip, carry handle, wing spar pockets, and pocket for inter-plane struts if for bi-plane.

In any event, when you made a renewal of your membership by paying the subscription, you automatically received a receipt/confirmation, which you can also print and keep with you as proof of membership. Life here in the engine room has been pretty hectic, to say the least. Besides the occasional meetings, there was a very busy period in May and June, with preparation for the 2015 Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Nats, a compendium event with six of the SAMAA Special Interest Groups. A great success in my opinion and the SAMAA management has publicly stated that it will happen again next year. A week after the Nats was the SAMAA Annual General Meeting. I wish more members would show an interest by attending the AGM. Clubs were invited and a few club chairmen did tender apologies, especially those who were not within easy driving distance. Maiden record of 30 aeries in one day at Area 51 At the beginning of July, I attended a very special an unique event at Area 51 in Polokwane. I’m not aware of any similar type of event, anywhere, with 30 aircraft being maiden-flighted on one day! Noel Booysen and I carefully checked each aircraft with a full pre-flight check, and the day was filled with 45 flights of a great variety of aircraft. Everything was done safely, and the atmosphere was one of cooperation and camaraderie.

Words cannot express the success of this event on Saturday 1 August, where every conceivable item was taken care of. The invited pilots were supplied with free accommodation, food and refreshments, and expert facilities to thrill the residents of Nelspuit and surrounding towns. Huge sponsorships were secured, and in my opinion this event is unequalled in South Africa. My personal thanks for the invitation to join the club and its members. LOMAC, you have done yourselves proud! Look for the report in the next issue of SAMAA News. Cheetah jumps fence The SAMAA office is in the Denel complex at Kempton Park, and there was great excitement a few days ago, when a Cheetah was “airlifted” over the perimeter fence. The Cheetah is destined for a paintball park facility on Denel Land Systems property in Selbourne Road near Centurion, where there will be several other old military vehicles (armoured troop carriers, jeeps, aircraft, tanks, etc.). The inaugural paintball event at the end of August event is named the Denel Operation Reboot 2015.

Jacques Botha and Craig Bell on the start line.

The Pylon Racing Nationals for 2015 were held over the weekend 13 to 16 June as part of the combined 2015 power Nationals held at Klerksdorp. Pilots could enter Standard Quickies, Hot Quickies and Q40. For the first time in many years, we had a record number of entries in Standard Quickies, with 17 pilots entering. Unfortunately two of them could not finish their planes in time, leaving us with 15 pilots on the start line. Saturday saw the first three heats of Standard Quickies, and this is where all the fun began! Russell van der Westhuizen, Eben Muller, and Lionel Smith were all posting very good times, with the rest of the pack following. Russell posted a 92.91 seconds time in heat 3, which was also the quickest time of the event. As the pilots were all eager to post good times, we saw quite a few cuts (we also had a cut judge on pylon 2), as well as a few “did not finish” heats due to possible too-lean settings on take-off. The first three heats were not uneventful, as Russell had a midair with Martin Muller in heat 3, where both aircraft were destroyed. Luckily Russell had a back-up aircraft, and he could continue with racing. Myself had a problem where the plane did not want to turn around pylon 1, going straight and met mother earth, completely destroying the plane and motor. This was the end of my Standard Quickie racing. André Stockwell had a baffle in his engine's muffler coming loose in heat 2, taking him out of the competition. Grant Brook experienced some plane problems, and had to withdraw from the competition. Neil Dawson was flying well, but unfortunately had 2 cuts in heat 2 and 3, which gave him scores of 200 seconds for both rounds. He decided that there is no way to catch up on those times again (with only 3 heats left), and withdrew from the competition.

Studies of intense concentration...

Jacques Botha and Craig Bell waiting for the flag-off. Craig (Tx) and Norman Bell have always been ulta-competitive, and aeromodelling is no exception. Eben Muller awaiting the end of the count-down.

Pylon racing is risky business. Crash-crew retrieving the remnants of a pylon racing aerie. Frans van der Schyff caught this floating wing, after a mid-air collision.

Give it all you’ve got! At left is Lionel Smith (t-shirt) and Russell van der Westhuizen, and at right is Matthys Botha and Eben Muller.

At the end of day one, Russell was laying ahead of the pack, Eben Muller was in second place and Lionel Smith, Matthys Botha, Danie Potgieter, Clive McInnes, and Craig Bell were all chasing 3rd place.

second score in heat 4, resulting in Lionel getting that “gap” between the two of them, which Eben just could not make up again. On Tuesday it was the final event of the competition, with the Q40 class. We only had three entries, with much more spectators! Russell was flying his GR7 with Nelson motor, Eben his AR6 with DKT, and myself a Polecat with a Nelson. All three aircraft are from Big Bruce Racing in Australia.

Sunday racing started with 10 pilots remaining. This was a much better day, as we did not see any aircraft being destroyed, and most pilots were getting in better scores than the previous day. We also did not experience so many cuts than the previous day. Unfortunately Clinton Carter-Brown had a loose firewall problem with his aircraft, and had to withdraw.

The competition ended quickly for myself when I over-rolled the aircraft in heat one around pylon three, resulting in a bad “arrival” with a broken aircraft. This left Eben and Russell to fight for the first spot. Eben's combination of aircraft and motor just seemed to work very well, with him constantly posting the best times per heat. Russell was struggling a bit with is GR7 in the crosswind we experienced on the day. Russell unfortunately also had a “did not start” in heat two, giving him a 200 second score for that heat. Eben posted the best time of the event, which was also his personal best (71.79).

Russell again had a brilliant day, posting very quick times, with Eben, Matthys, Danie, and Craig all following him. Lionel Smith had an unfortunate “did not finish” in heat 6, which gave him a 200 second score, resulting in him dropping a few positions. At the end of day 2 (after 6 heats with one throwaway), Russell was victorious.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at the field after the end of all flying on Tuesday. SAMPRA was very fortunate to have received a very generous donation of two Great Planes Viper Kits from Hadri Lombaard (JOMAC), which were used as prizes for first and second places in the Standard Quickie class. We also received a R500 donation as third prize.

Monday was the turn of the Hot Quickies with five entries. Three pilots were flying Vipers/scratch-build planes, with Russell and and Eben flying composite aircraft. Eben was also the only pilot running one of the new DKT motors.

We would like to thank all the helpers and timers which made the event successful. To name a few are Dirk Meyer, Zane Mannell, who played the role of starter (and both their partners), Johan, Jacques Swanepoel, and Stan Fincham from RMAC.

More action followed when Russell and myself had a midair in heat one, taking myself out of the competition. Russell had a back-up aircraft, but noticed on the starting line with the start of heat two, that the tail was cracked, which forced him to withdraw. Danie Potgieter experienced an aircraft problem in heat one, where the stabilizer decided to part from the fuselage around pylon one, and thereby destroying the aircraft.

A special word of thanks to Juanita and Alan Smith, for donating all the fuel that was used at this Nationals. Many thanks Als’s Hobbies, your support is much appreciated! The next pylon racing event will be held on Saturday 5 September, at RMAC.

This left only Eben Muller and Lionel Smith remaining in the competition. For the first three heats, competition was fierce between the two of them, however, although Eben's setup was quicker than Lionel's, he posted a 200

A Quickie through the lens of Frans van der Schyff.

The pre-mixed fuel for the pylon racing event at the 2015 Combined Nats was sponsored by Juanita and Alan Smith of Al’s Hobbies. Each participant also received an embroidered cap.

Scale

at the 2015 Aerial Concepts Combined Nats

by Koos Pretorius. Photos by Neil Allen, Clive McInnes, Andrew de Beer, Marietjie Skinner. Beautiful sunset-shot at the PC Pelser airport. Clive McInnes’ Super Cub could just as well have been a full-size aerie.

I arrived at Klerksdorp PC Pelser Airport at 11:00 on June 12 to find the airport and most of the surrounding area shrouded in mist. This did not bode well for the Nats. After unpacking, assembling the Yak54 and catching up with some fellow RMAC club members as well as friends last seen many years ago, I flew my practice flight, cleaned the plane, and put it away in the hanger provided for our planes.

The pilots briefing was held that evening in the PC Pelser clubhouse. After the briefing everyone except a few hardy campers, headed to our accommodation for a shower and some sleep. The following morning thick fog greeted us yet again and this only disappeared at 09:00. The resulting delay in the start of flying necessitated some deft adjustment of the schedule for the day. Scale got underway with Static judging of the two F4H/SOS aircraft namely Neil Allen's Spitfire and Roland Suhrmuller's DH Dragonfly, both being powered by electric motors. I think this was a first for scale. Sport Scale flying started at 15:00 after the Pylon Racing had finished, as we were sharing the same flight line/area, the juncture of the main runway and a taxiway. It was fantastic weather for competition flying and the little wind that there was, was never more than about 20º off the runway. The first flight in Sport Scale was made by Roland Suhrmuller with his CAP 232. This was Roland's second national championships. Dean Grobbelaar was up next with his Sukhoi. Dean had a solid flight and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of scale flying.

A thick blanket of mist greeted us on Friday and Saturday mornings. This delayed the Saturday-start but had no great effect on the competition.

After discovering that the static judging area was not cleaned, I had to take a broom and clean a big enough area inside this new unfinished hanger myself... what a way to work up a sweat!

Dean Grobbelaar’s father, Derrick, wheeling the Sukhoi past the control line circle after a Scale flight. Danie Potgieter was up third with his RV8 and had a very good flight as he did in all the other disciplines he had entered. I was up next and had my best flight of the competition with my YAK 54.

Dirk Visser had an ' interesting' flight with his pretty, electric-powered Beechcraft Baron. He started some of his manoeuvres on the opposite side of the usual flight area, away from the judges. He then turned towards the judges, resulting in a poor flight score. After the round, the judges discussed his errors with him and loaned him a rule book for homework that evening. We had to wait a few minutes for Clive McInnes as he was flying Large Scale Aerobatics on another flight line to the south of the airfield. Clive really enjoyed his flight with his Super Cub and it was Clive's highest scoring flight of the competition.

On Sunday morning we had an early start at 08:00, with the second round with Stand-off-Scale breaking the ice. Luckily the little mist that there was, had dissipated and we could start with little delay, with Roland flying the DH Dragonfly, followed by Neil Allen and the Spitfire. Due to the early-morning cold conditions, the electric-powered Spitfire did not want to perform as expected. Neil stated during the flight that he thought the batteries were not giving the required power, and this resulted in his lowest flight score.

Neil getting assistance from his wife. Turning the Spitfire over has nothing to do with engine starting, since it is electrically-driven.

Sport Scale started with Roland, followed by myself, then Dean Grobbelaar who had another good flight, along with Danie. This time Dirk had a much better flight, his highest of the competition. Clive was up last because he was flying Large Scale Aerobatics again. Clive had another solid flight and was by now flying the Super Cub like a seasoned scale pilot.

Dirk Visser’s Beech Baron. Dirk is a long-time competitor in aerobatics, but tried his hand at Scale.

Round 3 on Monday started with SOS again. Roland flew first and had a reasonable flight with the Dragonfly. Neil had his highest flight score of his competition with the Spitfire. Dean started Sport Scale and had the highest score of the round followed by Danie and the RV8 who was really enjoying himself flying scale. I had my worst flight of the competition. Clive had a good flight and I think he also enjoyed himself. Dirk had a reasonable flight with the Baron although it would have been nice if the Baron was a bit bigger. Overall the 2015 Combined Nationals was a successful competition, well organised and run. I want to thank the pilots that participated, and hope to see them all at the next Nationals, each with another competitor so that we can really grow the Scale SIG. I would like to thank the judges Kenney Morey, Jan Coetzee, and Johan Ehlers. Without their efforts and guidance to the pilots, this scale national competition would not have been possible. Thanks judges, we really appreciate it. I also want to thank Bob and Marietjie Skinner for all their hard work behind the scenes, as well as Herman Weber for always making sure that the judges had cold drinks and moving between flight lines to ensure that pilots moved quickly from one discipline to the next.

Flight line was quite busy, since the area was shared between Jets and Scale. Two of the judges also did double duty on these two disciplines. Clive McInnes’ Super Cub in foreground.

Last but by no means least I want to thank the management of the PC Pelser municipal airport for their efforts in providing a suitable venue, resulting in a very enjoyable 2015 Combined National championships.

Stand-off-Scale was up next with the weak winter sun starting to go down. Neil Allen took off with his electric-powered Spitfire MK12 with realistic sounding Merlin engine via a speaker system built into the nose of the aircraft. (see the article by Neil Allen in SAMAA News Issue 2 of 2015, page 4, about sound systems for model aircraft). Due to relatively high current drain on the battery-powered motor, it is necessary for Neil to maintain a very tight flight schedule with the Spitfire. However this does not result in very smooth flying, and will always appear rushed to the judges. Sunday evening saw a most enjoyable braai held at the airport, arranged by the Klerksdorp Radio Flyers. This was a great time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. The KRF members really pulled out all the stops that night and everyone had more than enough to eat. A heartfelt thanks to KRF... I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that all of us really enjoyed it.

Large Scale Aerobatics at the 2015 Aerial Concepts Combined Nats by Gavin Walton.

07:00 start for judges on Tuesday. Just not enough daylight to start judging.

After much discussion and planning, the decision to hold a combined Nationals was agreed and the preparation planning began, lead by Herman Weber and his team. PC Pelser airfield in Klerksdorp was decided as the most suitable venue for the event, over the weekend starting Saturday 13 June to Tuesday 16 June 2015. This full-size airfield is situated 2km away from the Klerksdorp Radio Flyers field where several pilots put in a few practice flights. The participating SIGs were Large Scale Aerobatics, Jets, Control line, Scale, Pylon Racing, and Pattern. It all started off on the Friday evening with a high-spirited pilots briefing in the club house. Pattern and Large Scale shared the same space on the flight line and with the number of entries for both SIGs, made it possible for a full round each per day. We were happy with our initial 20 entries; however there were unfortunately two non-starters. Large Scale started at the intended starting time of 12:00 on Saturday with round 1. Up first was Sportsman, followed by Intermediate, Expert then Unlimited. On Sunday we started at 08:00 with Intermediate, Monday at 12:00 with Expert and then at 07:00 on Tuesday in order to make up some time to include the prize giving as early as possible. This proved a bit challenging as the sun only rises at 07:10 and the temperature was a few below zero. The weather played ball for us the entire weekend with clear skies and the occasional bit of wind. One of the objectives to have a combined event was to encourage pilots to fly in as many other disciplines as possible. This did create a few possible clashes however the various contest directors agreed that every effort should be made to avoid the possibility of a round being lost due to a clash. This was successfully achieved.

Unfortunately, not through lack of trying, we were unable to get the right number of judges from our pool of judges we normally use however this was resolved by four pattern judges offering their services for which I am very grateful for and thank them heartily. They were Martin Knoetzen, Bruce Clark, Ludwig Steyn and Sebastiano Sacca – thanks again for your help and perhaps someday I can return the favour. Another benefit of a combined event is that the officials get to see what the other SIGs are all about. The social atmosphere at the evening braai’s was excellent and many new friends were made. The catering was great and all the effort put in by the various officials certainly paid off. Just past mid-day on the Tuesday we had the prizegiving and shortly after most of us set off on our way home. Well done to the organising committee and other participating SIGs for a magnificent event led by Herman; there are too many names to mention individually. Let's hope we can have a bigger and better event next year attracting more entries and hopefully more SIGs. Well done to the winners of the following LSA classes: Michel Leusch - Unlimited, Owen Vuyk – Expert, Craig Bell – Intermediate, Glenn Larsen – Sportsman. Well done to all the other pilots and thanks to those who would not normally have flown or entered LSA for participating – we hope to see a lot more of you.

In general the flying quality in Large Scale was good and as the contest progressed the pilots upped their game and at the end some exceptional flying was enjoyed by those who gathered to watch. Apart from the occasional full size movement we were generally incident free except for 1 minor issue that rendered an aircraft unserviceable eliminating two pilots from the last round as they were sharing the aircraft. by Zane Mannell. Photos by Andrew de Beer Beautiful DH 115 Vampire of Dean Grobbelaar attracted great attention, on the ground, and with its graceful flying abilities.

Pierre Fouchés ill-fated L-39 being towed to its start position.

The South African Model Jet Association was one of the Special Interest Groups of the SAMAA that joined in the combined Nationals at the PC Pelser Airport in Klerksdorp from 12 to 16 June 2015. Most of the pilots arrived in Klerksdorp on Friday with a pilots briefing scheduled for Friday Night. The event director, Herman Weber, took the pilots through the do's and dont’s of the weekend. Flying was scheduled to start at 08:00 on Saturday morning. Scale and Jets had agreed to share the judges for both static and flying. Saturday morning was put aside for static judging and no flying for the jet competitors on Saturday as we would swop morning and afternoon flying slots with the Scale SIG. Michel Leusch had to pull out all the stops to win the Sport Jet class, with his Sebart Avanti S.

The flight line for the scale and jet competitors was a challenge in the morning, with the sun only moving out of the flying zone at around 11:00. This made us change the morning slot to a late afternoon slot, after Scale, to try and get away from the sun in the morning. The mornings were a little chilly with frost on the first morning. There were two entrants for F4J: Dean Grobbelaar with his ex-Roberts DH115 Vampire T55, and Pierre Fouche with his Aero Vodochody Albatross L39. Unfortunately, only two entries meant that this would not constitute a competition, but both pilots had agreed that they would still like to partake in the event to gain experience in both flying and static judging of their aircraft. In the Sport Jet class, we had five entrants: Michel Leusch with a Sebart Avanti S, Dean Grobbelaar with a CARF Lightning, Pierre Fouche with a BAC 167 Strikemaster, Calvin Schroll with a Boomerang Taurus and Neil Collins with Krill Avanti S. Due to the busy flight lines, only three flying rounds were possible for Jets. In the first round, both Calvin and Pierre had flame-outs but both landed safely. Michel set the early pace putting in some stunning scores with his Avanti.

SAM A A News Issue 3 of 2015 - Page 16

Calvin showed that the precision aerobatics background definitely helped with the manoeuvres he flew in his sequences. Unfortunately Pierre lost orientation on his L39 on his second flight and crashed just outside the airfield with a total loss of his aircraft and equipment. Ironically, the crash occurred in the vicinity of the cemetery where Gianfranco Cicogna had his fatal crash in his L39 at the 2012 Klerksdorp Airshow. The last round had the pilots pull out some good scores to ensure that they stayed in with a chance. In the end, the deserved winner was Michel Leusch, followed by Calvin Schroll, and Dean Grobbelaar in third place. From SAMJA, I would like to thank SAMAA, Herman Weber, Klerksdorp Radio Flyers, Cliff Lotter and his crew at the PC Pelser Airport, the Scale SIG, and the judges, for their efforts over the weekend, to make a very enjoyable Nationals for all. The spirit over the whole weekend was great and the camaraderie between disciplines was great to see, many new friends were made and some old friends re-united. To the pilots for taking part, thank you very much! These jets are hard work...takes two to lift the DH Vampire.

Calvin Schroll flew the Ian Matten Boomerang Torus to a close second in the Sport Jet class.

examinations and are now enabled to test other members. This discipline is growing very fast, and many clubs are hosting mini-quad FPV racing events. Some of our members are in the process of formalising this, and the SAMAA is already in contact with CIAM regarding international participation.

Chairman’s Report

Last, but not least, three of the SAMAA Management Committee members travelled to the Lowveld Model Aircraft Club just outside of Nelspruit, to attend their annual airshow. I have to congratulate Phillip Lewis, the LOMAC chairman, and his incredible team who put up one of the most significant SAMAA-sanctioned events I have ever attended. They catered for every need of every pilot and guest, and the event included many vendors with stalls. I have to commend all the pilots and officials who participated as there were aircraft in the sky the entire day, with excellent commentary by Lemmy Dolezal and Bobby Rowe, and no breach of safety during the entire event. Well done, LOMAC!

Marthinus Potgieter Since our last newsletter was issued, many events have taken place. One of the most significant and important, was the 2015 Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Power Nationals that took place at the PC Pelser aerodrome in Klerksdorp, over the long weekend of 12 to 16 June. It was hailed as a huge success, and individual reports, results, and photographs from the SIG's have been included in this report. Shortly after the Nationals, the SAMAA management committee hosted the 2015 AGM at the SAMAA offices on Thursday 25 June 2015. The attendance was reasonable, but the question always arises as to why there are not more members taking an active interest in the affairs of our organisation. As you might be aware, due to the change of our financial year-end to the last day of December each year, we will host the 2016 AGM even earlier next year - in March if the audited financial statements are completed. The detailed Chairman's Report, which was presented at the AGM, is published in Issue 3 of 2015 of the SAMAA News, so I am not going to repeat myself but keep this report short. On the 1st of July, the new Part 101 of the Civil Aviation Act legalising the commercial operation of RPAS, better known as drones or UAV's, came into effect. The MHSA and some of our members developed our own Multi-rotor Proficiency scheme in a very short space of time, and that was voted on and approved at the 2015 AGM. We view this proficiency as work-in-progress, and as the discipline and technology develops, so the proficiency document will be amended. I was also privileged to attend the first Part 101 Licensing Information workshop hosted by SACAA and was very impressed with the presentations delivered on the day. We have included an extract of the SACAA bulletin summarising this process in SAMAA News Issue 3 of 2015. Our General Manager, Bob Skinner, and I adjudicated the first five SAMAA Multi-rotor Instructor proficiencies on Wednesday, 15 July 2015, at Barnstormers. Well done to the five members who all passed the

The current SAMAA Management Committee will reach the end of their elected term in May 2016, and the nomination and election process for the new committee will start as of this publication (see SAMAA News issue 3 of 2015). I would like to invite all SAMAA members who can offer a positive and constructive contribution to our organisation, to make themselves available to serve on the committee. If you are not sure what is required or how to be nominated, please feel free to contact me and I will discuss everything with you in detail. I also would like to ask members not to make themselves available if their intentions are not to work hard and deliver a constructive contribution to our Association. By the time this issue is published, our new website should be nearly up and running. Please take note that this is only the start of a website that we will manage and update ourselves from the SAMAA office, and it will mature and improve with time. Please feel free to contact our office with any suggestions. Since our last publication we have had five teams (one of which consisted of only junior members) participating overseas in World Championship events. Well done to all, and I am sure the respective team managers will report comprehensively on their achievements. Enjoy your flying and always keep safety as your first priority!

Don’t forget the election. Nominate someone today!

SAM A A News Issue 3 of 2015 - Page 18

Election of members for the SAMAA Management Committee It is almost time for the election of members to the next SAMAA Management Committee. This election process will start in the next few weeks, and the committee is currently investigating means of electronic voting, since the post office has proven to be a totally unreliable method of communication. Watch your SAMAA News for the announcement, and the first step, that of nomination for five elected committee positions. The nomination and voting procedure in the current system calls for postal votes. Due to the problems experienced at the SA Post Office, it has been requested that the postal votes are replaced with an e-mail vote. This procedure is rather long-winded so we have written this summary of how the procedure will work. E-MAIL VOTING PROCEDURE. 1. Nominations. 2. Voting. 3. Counting and declaration of results. 4. Ratification.

2. Voting When the nomination forms are returned and vetted, these names will be published in a SAMAA newsletter along with their CV's, requesting every SAMAA member to vote for the nominated members as listed. You may vote for up to five members as per the published form and return this via e-mail to the e-mail address or fax number of the SAMAA auditors as indicated on the form. NB. DO NOT RETURN TO SAMAA! 3. Counting The auditors will verify the votes and ensure the members are current and in good standing. They will supply the election co-ordinator, to be nominated by the SMC, of the vote count. 4. Ratification The results of the vote count will be announced at the next AGM, and along with any floor votes, will decide on the next SMC committee members.

1. Nominations Nominations are called for in this SAMAA News, and a form is printed below requesting the names of nominees. Nominees will be required to sign acceptance of the proposal, and must be eligible for the position. The nomination form shows the return e-mail addresses, that of the SAMAA General Manager, or the fax number of the SAMAA office. Return on or before the published date.

There we have it – sweet and simple – but it will only work and succeed if you, the member, do your job properly by voting, voting timeously, return the forms to the correct e-mail address or fax number, and filling in the forms correctly. The SAMAA is for your benefit, works for you, for your hobby and your enjoyment; so protect, participate, and foster it. THE FUTURE – SAMAA.
