Theocharakis Foundation are an ode to culture and creation. Anafiotika neighborhood under the watchful gaze of the Acropolis is perhaps one of the loveliest places for a stroll in Europe and one of the most frequently visited sites in the capital. ια έκθεση για το αρχαίο κάλλος από το μεγαλύτερο και σημαντικότερο μουσείο της Ελλάδας θα μπορούσε να έχει μια τυπική μορφή, με τον αναμενόμενο συντηρητικό σχεδιασμό ενός μεγάλου οργανισμού. Όμως το Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο μπαίνει σε μια νέα εποχή, δημιουργώντας μια διαφορετική εμπειρία για τους επισκέπτες. Η έκθεση «Αμέτρητες Όψεις του Ωραίου» φυσικά βασίζεται κυρίως στα εκθέματα από τις συλλογές του Μουσείου. Θα περίμενε όμως κανείς να βρει –και να μυρίσει– ένα αρχαίο άρωμα; Ή να μάθει λεπτομέρειες για τις τεχνικές αρχαίας υφαντικής;

An exhibition on beauty in antiquity organized by the largest and most important Greek museum might have been expected to come in the standard, predictable and conservative style that is typical of large-scale foundations. However, the National Archaeological Museum embarks on a new era and provides a very different experience for visitors. ‘The countless aspects of Beauty’ is, of course, primarily founded on the Museum’s various collections. Nevertheless, visitors will be quite surprised to find –and actually be offered the opportunity to nose– among the exhibits an ancient perfume and be introduced to ancient weaving techniques.

Κάθε εποχή και κάθε τόπος έχουν τα δικά τους πρότυπα για το τι σημαίνει ωραίο και το πώς η ομορφιά αναγνωρίζεται και αποτυπώνεται στα έργα τέχνης. Ωστόσο, η απεικόνιση του κάλλους στα αρχαία έργα τέχνης αποτελεί ένα σημείο αναφοράς πέρα από αναγνώσεις, ερμηνείες και προτιμήσεις. Στην αρχαία Ελλάδα, η ομορφιά ήταν δύναμη, στόχος, αρετή, μια ιδιότητα που θεωρούνταν απαραίτητη για την επίτευξη μιας ολοκληρωμένης προσωπικότητας, σε συνδυασμό με τη γνώση και την ανάπτυξη του πνεύματος. Η ομορφιά αναφερόταν σε κάθε πτυχή της ζωής των αρχαίων Ελλήνων, από τα κείμενα του Πλάτωνα μέχρι τα περίτεχνα κοσμήματα και τα καλλυντικά, που ήταν μέρος της καθημερινότητας. Ήταν κάτι τόσο σημαντικό, ώστε για να τιμηθεί, είχε και τη δική του θεά, την Αφροδίτη.

Different periods and places set their own standards when it comes to defining, appreciating and expressing beauty through art. Still, the representation of beauty in classical works of art is a point of reference that is not subject to personal interpretation, construction or taste. In ancient Greece, beauty consisted in strength and was perceived as a goal; it was a virtue and a quality that was seen as essential –along with knowledge and a healthy mind– for one’s evolvement and fulfilment. Beauty was a universal requirement in ancient Greece, embracing all facets of everyday life and extending from Plato’s works to ornate jewellery and cosmetics. Such was the importance of beauty that it just had to be assigned its own deity: goddess Aphrodite.

It therefore comes as no surprise that Greek art in antiquity was so committed to the representation of beauty. Regardless of its varying constructions in art through time, beauty, as rendered in antiquity, has invariably been a source of inspiration and influence in the artistic reading of aesthetics. In its current temporary exhibition on beauty, the National Archaeological Museum showcases 340 antiquities drawn from its rich collections. The exhibition presents different versions of beauty and aesthetics in various social and cultural con-

Οι «Αμέτρητες Όψεις του Ωραίου» παρουσιάζουν τις διαφορετικές εκφράσεις της αισθητικής και του Ωραίου σε ετερογενή κοινωνικά και πολιτισμικά περιβάλλοντα από τη νεολιθική περίοδο μέχρι την ύστερη αρχαιότητα, τόσο με παραδοσιακούς εκθεσιακούς τρόπους όσο και με σύγχρονα ψηφιακά μέσα. Οι «Αμέτρητες Όψεις του Ωραίου» αποτελούν το τελευταίο μέρος μιας εκθεσιακής τριλογίας που σχεδιάστηκε για να τιμήσει την επέτειο των 150 χρόνων του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου από τη θεμελίωση του εμβληματικού του κτηρίου. Η πρώτη έκθεση, το 2015, είχε τίτλο «Ένα Όνειρο Ανάμεσα σε Υπέροχα Ερείπια… Περίπατος στην Αθήνα των Περιηγητών, 17ος-19ος αιώνας», παρουσιάζοντας το πολιτισμικό περιβάλλον μέσα στο οποίο διαμορφώθηκε η ανάγκη για την ίδρυση του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου, ενώ το 2016 ακολούθησαν οι «Οδύσσειες», με θέμα τη διαχρονική προσπάθεια του ανθρώπου για δημιουργία και εξέλιξη. Η τρέχουσα έκθεση θα μπορούσε κανείς να πει ότι βρίσκεται πιο κοντά από κάθε άλλη στους αρχικούς στόχους του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου, αφού ακόμη και στο καταστατικό του 1893 αναφέρεται ότι μεταξύ των σκοπών του είναι «η καλλιέργεια έρωτος προς τας καλάς τέχνας». Η δομή της έκθεσης αρθρώνεται σε τέσσερα μέρη. Η «Αιώνια Aισθητική» παρουσιάζει επιλεγμένα αντικείμενα της καθημερινότητας που καταγράφουν τις διαφορετικές εκφράσεις αισθητικής, το «Ωραίο και το Επιθυμητό» αναφέρεται στις αισθητικές προτιμήσεις των αρχαίων κοινωνιών με βάση τους αρχαίους ελληνικούς μύθους, αλλά και αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα σχετικά με την ένδυση, την κόμμωση, τα κοσμήματα και τον καλλωπισμό. Σύμφωνα με τη διευθύντρια του Μουσείου, κα Μαρία Λαγογιάννη, «οτιδήποτε χρησιμοποιείται σήμερα σε σχέση με τον γυναικείο καλλωπισμό θα το βρείτε και στην αρχαιότητα». Ποια ήταν τα αντίστοιχα προϊόντα; Λευκός μόλυβδος, μηλία γη και

texts from the Neolithic Period to Late Antiquity, both in conventional displays and through state-of-the-art digital applications. “The countless aspects of Beauty” is the last part of an exhibition trilogy designed to celebrate the 150 years of the emblematic National Archaeological Museum building. The first part (2015), “A dream among splendid ruins... Strolling through the Athens of Travellers, 17th-19th century”, was about the cultural environment within which the need to found the National Archaeological Museum emerged. The second part (2016), “Odysseys”, captured Man’s efforts to create and progress through time. The current exhibition is perhaps closer to the initial goals of the National Archaeological Museum –as defined in its 1893 Charter– which included ‘the cultivation of love for the arts’. The exhibition unfolds in four parts. “Eternal aesthetics” displays selected everyday objects which demonstrate the different facets of aesthetics. “The beautiful and the desirable” is about the aesthetic preferences of societies in antiquity, drawing on ancient Greek myths and archaeological finds which relate to clothing, hairstyles, jewellery and beauty care. As the Museum’s director Maria Lagogianni points out, “anything used today by women for beauty care can also be found in antiquity”. What were the products used at the time? White lead, Melian earth and chalk for makeup, crocodile dung for a glowing skin, donkey’s fat and milk as anti-ageing products, flower petals as a blusher. “Focusing on the body” illustrates the expression of beauty in the visual rendering of the human body from the Neolithic Period to historic times. “The endless quest” aims at the aesthetic contemplation on the significance of the beautiful and its value for humans.

κιμωλία για μέικαπ, κροκοδειλέα, δηλαδή περιττώματα κροκόδειλου για λαμπερή επιδερμίδα, λίπος και γάλα γαϊδούρας για αντιρυτιδική δράση, πέταλα από λουλούδια για ρουζ. Το τμήμα «Προβάλλοντας το Σώμα» παρουσιάζει τους τρόπους με τους οποίους το ωραίο και το ανθρώπινο σώμα αποδόθηκαν εικαστικά από τη νεολιθική περίοδο μέχρι τους ιστορικούς χρόνους. Τέλος, η «Ατέρμονη Αναζήτηση» αναφέρεται στον αισθητικό στοχασμό σε ό,τι αφορά τη σημασία του Ωραίου και την αξία του για τον άνθρωπο.

One of the exhibition’s innovative aspects is the presentation of “ancient” perfumes that visitors shall be able to nose. In collaboration with Korres Natural Products, perfumes were developed inspired from antiquity. Three scented oils were manufactured by Korres laboratories on the basis of information sourced from certain 13th century BCE Linear B tablets from Pylos. “Aphrodite’s Rose” –one of the three scented oils– contains extra-virgin oil, nutsedge from Amorgos, alkanna root and rose petals.

Μία από τις καινοτομίες της έκθεσης είναι η παρουσίαση «αρχαίων» αρωμάτων, που οι επισκέπτες μπορούν να μυρίσουν. Σε συνεργασία με την εταιρία Κορρές, δημιουργήθηκαν αρώματα εμπνευσμένα από πληροφορίες που προέρχονται από αρχαίες πηγές. Πρόκειται για τρία αρωματικά έλαια που παρασκευάσθηκαν στα εργαστήρια της Κορρές, σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που αναφέρονται σε πινακίδες Γραμμικής Β γραφής του 13ου π.Χ. αιώνα από την Πύλο. Το ένα από τα τρία αρώματα ονομάζεται «Ρόδο Αφροδίτης» και έχει συστατικά το αγριέλαιο, το φυτό κύπειρο που βρίσκεται στην Αμοργό, τη ρίζα του φυτού αλκάνα και πέταλα από τριαντάφυλλα.

What are visitors going to see at the exhibition? The priestess Timokrite, fastening a brooch on her tunic; Eros, watering poppies in the company of Dionysus and the maenads; gold cups and jewels, oil lamps, ceramic vases, objects made of rock crystal; a marble statue of Aphrodite from the sanctuary of Apollo Maleas in Epidaurus, draped in a himation and holding an apple in her hand, a reminder that she was the winner of the first beauty contest held on Zeus’ suggestion. Visitors will also find out that one of the first secrets of women’s beauty, the first bra, became known thanks to the solidarity among goddesses, in spite of their notorious rivalry. When Hera confided to Aphrodite her disappointment at Zeus’ infidelities, she asked her to reveal one of her beauty secrets, whereupon Aphrodite presented her with the embroidered undergarment with which she emphasized her breasts. This was, in effect, the first push-up bra in history.

Με όλες τις πληροφορίες, τις εικόνες και τις οσμές της έκθεσης, στο τέλος κάποιος μπορεί να προβληματιστεί για το τι είναι στην πραγματικότητα το Ωραίο. Η έκθεση δίνει την απάντηση μέσα από ένα βίντεο που παρουσιάζει την άποψη του σοφιστή Πρωταγόρα: «Πάντων χρημάτων μέτρον άνθρωπος». Οι «Αμέτρητες Όψεις του Ωραίου», που τμηματικά ταξίδεψαν αρχικά σε μικρότερα μουσεία της Ελλάδας, τα οποία ανήκουν στο δίκτυο μουσείων του Πολιτιστικού Ιδρύματος Ομίλου Πειραιώς, συνοδεύονται από πειραματικά εργαστήρια που θα πραγματοποιούνται σε όλη τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης. Επιστήμονες, καλλιτέχνες και τεχνίτες από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό θα εξηγούν πειραματικές προσεγγίσεις στην υφαντική της νεολιθικής περιόδου, το ένδυμα στο Αιγαίο κατά τη δεύτερη χιλιετία π.Χ., τη μυκηναϊκή ενδυμασία, την πολυχρωμία των αρχαίων γλυπτών και την απόδοση του Ωραίου στην αρχαία ελληνική μουσική. ν και εκτίθεστε καθημερινά μέσα από τα έργα σας στον δημόσιο χώρο, γιατί επιλέγετε τώρα να συναντήσετε το κοινό στον ασφαλή, εσωτερικό χώρο ενός ιδρύματος; Είναι σαν να καλώ τον κόσμο στο ατελιέ μου, σε μια ιδιωτική στιγμή. Σαν να βγάζω λίγο τα άπλυτα στη φόρα, τις σκέψεις μου, τους προβληματισμούς μου. Στους κλειστούς χώρους, κάνω σχετικά εφήμερα έργα κι έχω τη δυνατότητα να πειραματιστώ περισσότερο. Στους εξωτερικούς, δουλεύω με τρόπο πιο απόλυτο και συνθετικό. Το έργο στον δημόσιο χώρο είναι πολεμικό. Δεν μπορώ να κάνω λάθος έξω. Και επίσης, στον κλειστό χώρο μπορώ να εκθέσω κάποιες σκέψεις θέτοντας ερωτήματα, μπορώ να είμαι πιο αναλυτικός, πιο ερευνητικός. Ο δημόσιος χώρος είναι σημείο αναφοράς. Το έργο εκεί δεν θέτει ερωτήματα. Πολλές φορές δημιουργεί και πολιτισμικά σοκ.

Given that you exhibit daily through your works in public spaces, what brought about your current decision to meet with your public in the safe, indoor space of a foundation? It’s like inviting people into my studio, to a private moment. It’s a little like airing my dirty laundry, my thoughts, my concerns. In closed spaces, I do relatively ephemeral works and I get the chance to experiment more. In outdoor spaces, I work in a more absolute, compositional manner. A work in a public space is prepared for war. I cannot make a mistake outside. In a closed space I can also exhibit some works that pose a question. I can be more analytical, more exploratory. A public space is a reference point. A work in a public space does not ask questions. And it often creates culture shocks.

Θα συστηνόσασταν ως ζωγράφος ή ως γλύπτης; Θα τολμούσα να συστηθώ ως ζωγράφος. Σπούδασα ζωγραφική. Έχω μεγαλώσει με ζωγραφική παιδεία, με τον Μαντένια και τον Καραβάτζιο. Η ζωγραφική είναι μέσα σε αυτά που κάνω και τα οποία μοιάζουν να μην είναι ζωγραφική. Ο «Δρομέας» είναι ένα ζωγραφικό έργο. Μπορεί να είναι γλυπτό, αλλά είναι σαν μια πινελιά πάνω στον δρόμο. Είναι ένα ιμπρεσιονιστικό γλυπτό. Πολλοί τον κοιτάζουν πρόχειρα και λένε ότι δεν έχει σωστές αναλογίες. Ο «Δρομέας» όμως δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο από ένα σκίτσο με μολύβι σε ένα χαρτί, που το σήκωσα στον αέρα. Είναι ένα έργο δύο διαστάσεων που γίνεται τριών. Είναι μια ζωγραφική προσέγγιση της γλυπτικής.

Would you introduce yourself as a painter or a sculptor? I would dare introduce myself as a painter. I studied painting. I grew with an education in painting, with Mantegna and Caravaggio. Painting is present in things I do which do not seem like painting. In a sense, the “Runner” is a painting. It may be a statue but it is like a brushstroke on the street. It is an impressionistic sculpture. A lot of people glance at it casually and say it doesn’t have the right proportions. But the “Runner” is nothing more than a pencil sketch which I produced and set up in the air. It is a two-dimensional work in three dimensions. It is a painting approach to sculpture.

Γιατί αφού αισθάνεστε ζωγράφος, βγήκατε στην τρίτη διάσταση; Ήταν φυσιολογικό. Όταν με απασχολούσε η ισορροπία του χώρου και του χρόνου, έψαξα τον χώρο πίσω από το τελάρο. Είχε προηγηθεί ο Λούτσιο Φοντάνα, που άρχισε να αποκαλύπτει το πρόβλημα της έννοιας του χώρου αλλά δεν εμβάθυνε. Προσπάθησα, λοιπόν, να εμβαθύνω τη σκέψη του κι άρχισα να ψάχνω τη σχέση μπροστά και πίσω από το τελάρο. Σε αυτή την αναζήτηση, αντιλήφθηκα την έννοια του ορίου και μου δημιουργήθηκε η ανάγκη να το σπάσω. Όταν συνέβη αυτό, βρέθηκα αυτομάτως

If you feel you are a painter, why did you start working in three dimensions? It came as something natural. When I was grappling with the balance between space and time, I searched the space behind the canvas. Earlier on, Lucio Fontana had started to delve into the problem of the notion of space, but only to a certain depth. So I tried to take his thinking deeper and I started exploring the relationship between what was in front of and behind the canvas. While exploring this, I hit a kind of wall, as it were, and I felt the need to break through

εκτός τελάρου. Ήταν φυσιολογική και λίγο αναγκαστική εξέλιξη, διότι βγαίνοντας εκτός τελάρου απέκτησα βαρέως τύπου προβλήματα, όπως όγκου και στατικότητας. Μπήκα σε μια περιπέτεια, σαν να βρισκόμουν στη θάλασσα με 1.000 Μποφόρ. Το πιο γνωστό αλλά και δημοφιλές σας έργο, ο «Δρομέας», που βρίσκεται απέναντι από το Hilton και έγινε τοπόσημο για την Αθήνα, έχει ως τώρα ανταγωνιστή; Δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ κάποιο έργο που να έπαιξε αυτό τον ρόλο μέχρι σήμερα. Ο «Δρομέας» όρισε μια εποχή και όρισε και μένα. Άνοιξε διάπλατα τη σχέση που απέκτησα με τον κόσμο. Αν και ο θεατής έχει την εντύπωση πως βλέπει σχεδόν την αύρα ενός δρομέα, το φευγαλέο πέρασμά του με μεγάλη ταχύτητα, ταυτόχρονα είναι ένα στιβαρό και ογκώδες γλυπτό. Πώς εξηγείτε αυτή την αντίφαση; Το έργο αυτό πολλοί Ιταλοί κυρίως, αυθόρμητα, το βλέπουν ως φουτουριστικό. Δεν είναι. Κι αυτό διότι ο φουτουρισμός ανέλυε την ανθρώπινη φιγούρα εν κινήσει, καθώς η κίνηση ήταν ιδεολογικό ζητούμενο της εποχής εκείνης στην οποία αναπτύσσονταν μέσα όπως το αυτοκίνητο ή το αεροπλάνο. Ο κινηματογράφος ξεπέρασε τους φουτουριστές. Ο «Δρομέας» είναι το ακριβώς αντίθετο. Είναι η σύνθεση των θραυσμάτων μίας κίνησης, η οποία δημιουργεί ένα βάρος διότι αποτελεί σύνθεση πολιτισμικής δύναμης. Όταν τα θραύσματα ενώνονται με έναν σκοπό, τότε ο σκοπός πολλαπλασιάζεται επειδή είναι φτιαγμένος από πολλά θραύσματα. Γιατί αν και τα έργα σας βρίσκουν τη θέση τους κατά κύριο λόγο σε δημόσιους χώρους, επιλέγετε ως πρώτη ύλη ένα εύθραυστο υλικό όπως το γυαλί; Θεωρητικά είναι τρομερά ανθεκτικό, αθάνατο, πιο ισχυρό κι από το μάρμαρο. Για να σπάσει, πρέπει να δεχτεί επίθεση. Ανεξαρτήτως του υλικού του, όμως, ένα γλυπτό σε δημόσιο χώρο μπαίνει σε μια επικίνδυνη ζώνη: εκείνη της κοινωνίας, η οποία και θα αποφασίσει να το χαρακτηρίσει ως καλό. Δεν είναι, όμως, αιώνιο. Στην εξέλιξη της Ιστορίας, μπορεί να πάψει να είναι χαρακτηριστικό στοιχείο του

it. When this happened, I automatically found myself beyond the canvas. It was a natural and somewhat inevitable development because, moving beyond the canvas, I was forced to deal with weightier problems, such as volume and statics. I embarked on an adventure. It was like being at sea with winds of Beaufort force 1,000. Has your best-known and most popular work, the “Runner” –a landmark of Athens, situated opposite Hilton–, been challenged by a competitor so far? I cannot think of any other work that has played the same role to date. The “Runner” defined an era and defined me. It broadly expanded my relationship with people and the world. While viewers get the impression they are seeing what is essentially the aura of a runner flashing by at high speed, at the same time it is a solid and massive sculpture. How do you explain this contradiction? The natural response of many people, Italians mainly, is to see this as a futuristic work. It isn’t. Futurism analysed the human figure in motion, given that speed was an ideological concern of that era, which saw the development of cars and aeroplanes, among other things. The cinema overtook the futurists. The “Runner” is exactly the opposite. It is a synthesis of the fragments of a motion which creates a certain weight, because it is a synthesis of cultural power. When the fragments come together for a single purpose, the purpose is multiplied because it is composed of many fragments. What made you choose to work in the fragile medium of glass, given that your works mainly find their place in public spaces? In theory, glass is extremely durable, immortal; stronger than marble, even. To be broken, it has to come under attack. However, regardless of the material used, a sculpture in a public space enters a danger zone: that of society, which will ultimately decide

πολιτισμού και η ίδια η κοινωνία να το βανδαλίσει ή να το καταστρέψει. Αυτή είναι η μοίρα των δημόσιων γλυπτών κι έχουμε δει καταστροφές όλων των ειδών, κάτω από διαφορετικές συνθήκες και για διαφορετικούς λόγους. Από τα αγάλματα των αρχαίων πολιτισμών στη Συρία και στο Αφγανιστάν, ως τα σύγχρονα του Σαντάμ Χουσεΐν στο Ιράκ, τα εγκαταλελειμμένα γλυπτά του Γιάννη Κουνέλλη στην Ιταλία, τα βανδαλισμένα με σπρέι ιστορικά γλυπτά στην Αθήνα. Εξαρτάται από το ίδιο το γλυπτό πώς θα αντισταθεί. Δεν μπορεί να το προστατεύσει ο καλλιτέχνης. Αν και τα έργα σας έχουν κατακτήσει το διεθνές κοινό, στη δουλειά σας υπάρχει μια έντονη ρίζα σχετική με τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό. Ο ελληνικός πολιτισμός δεν είναι μια φορμαλιστική υπόθεση, αλλά υπόθεση κουλτούρας και συμπεριφοράς απέναντι στη γεωγραφική περιοχή που βρίσκομαι και στο μέγεθος της γνώσης που παράγεται εδώ. Η συνείδηση αυτή μού δίνει πολύ δυνατές ρίζες, οι οποίες είναι αναγκαίες για να πάω μπροστά.. Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ ευδοκιμώ εδώ. Τι πιστεύετε ότι τους ελκύει στο έργο σας; Η ελληνική σας ταυτότητα, η τάση σας να προσαρμόζεστε στο εκάστοτε περιβάλλον; Οτιδήποτε είναι αληθινό. Δεν έχουμε αξίες πλέον. Έχει χαθεί η κουλτούρα, η αυθεντικότητα. Η αλήθεια και το πραγματικό είναι που σώζουν κάθε φορά. Παντού χάνεται η έννοια της πραγματικής διάστασης, κυρίως με τα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. Ο χώρος πολλαπλασιάζεται σε πολλούς άλλους χώρους, όπως συμβαίνει επί παραδείγματι με τα clouds. Έχουμε και πάλι μια μεταβολή της ισορροπίας χώρου - χρόνου, που πρέπει να την αντιληφθούμε. Σε αυτή την αναστάτωση που έχει δημιουργηθεί, τα σημεία αναφοράς και η έννοια του πραγματικού παίζουν έναν πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο. Κι ο κόσμος έχει ανάγκη να κρατηθεί από κάπου. Η αναδρομική σας έκθεση αποτελεί μια απάντηση σε όσους σας έχουν αμφισβητήσει; Όχι, ίσα ίσα που τους συμπαθώ αυτούς. Έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στη ζωή μου. Μπορεί να πληγώθηκα, αλλά τελικά με βοήθησαν πάρα πολύ για

whether to regard it as good. But it is not eternal. As history evolves, a given work may cease to be a characteristic element of culture and society itself may vandalize or destroy it. This is the fate of public sculptures and we have seen the destruction of all kinds of sculptures under various conditions and for various reasons. From the statues of the ancient civilizations of Syria and Afghanistan to the modern statues of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, the abandoned sculptures of Jannis Kounellis in Italy, the historic sculptures of Athens vandalized with graffiti. How a given sculpture weathers society’s vicissitudes depends on that sculpture itself. The artist cannot protect it. While your works have won over an international audience, your work is strongly rooted in Greek civilization. Greek civilization is not a formalistic matter. It is a matter of culture; an attitude to the geographical region I am in and to the magnitude of the knowledge produced here. Awareness of this culture gives me very strong roots, which I need if I am to move forward. And that is why I thrive here. What do you think draws people to your work? Is it your Greek identity, your tendency to adapt to a given environment? Anything that is real. We no longer have values. Culture and authenticity have been lost. Truth and reality always come to the rescue. The notion of a “real dimension” is being lost all around, mainly through the social media. Space is being multiplied into many other spaces, as in the case of “cloud technology”, for example. We again have a shift in the space-time equilibrium and we have to realize this. In this unsettlement that has evolved, points of reference and the notion of reality play a key role. And people need to be able to hold on to something. Is your retrospective exhibition a response to those who have doubted you? Not at all. On the contrary, I like my critics. They have played a vital role

να βρω τη δύναμη να κάνω όσα έκανα. Η αμφισβήτηση που είχα και η κόντρα είναι ανθρώπινες. Πάντα στην Ιστορία υπήρχαν αυτά. Κανείς δεν πέρασε αναίμακτα. Απλώς τα τελευταία χρόνια τούς έχω αγαπήσει. Δεν μου γράφουν άσχημα κι έχω ανησυχήσει. Στήνοντας την έκθεση και βλέποντας το σύνολο της δουλειάς σας, υπάρχουν πράγματα για τα οποία μετανιώνετε; Έχω μετανιώσει για ορισμένα αλλά όχι για πολλά. Κυρίως όμως για επιλογές ζωής και για συμπεριφορές μου. Ήμουν απρόσεκτος με τους ανθρώπους. Με έπιαναν τα νεύρα μου και τους αδικούσα. Έχω αδικήσει κόσμο, κι ακόμη το κάνω. Για τις βασικές επιλογές μου, δεν έχω μετανιώσει. Ακολουθούσα πάντα το ένστικτό μου. Δεν βρέθηκα μπροστά σε τοίχο σε σχέση με τη δουλειά μου, παρά μόνο σε σχέση με τον εαυτό μου, τον οποίο πίεσα, αδιαφόρησα για την υγεία μου… Έκανα τέτοιου τύπου λάθος επιλογές. Εκεί μετανιώνω. Δεν είχα φρένο. Τι θα συστήνατε να δει ο επισκέπτης στην Αθήνα του 2018; Είναι μια μεταβατική περίοδος για τη σύγχρονη τέχνη στην πόλη, διότι η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη είναι κλειστή και το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης δεν είναι ακόμη έτοιμο να παρουσιάσει τη μόνιμη συλλογή του. Θα πρότεινα, λοιπόν, μια βόλτα στον πεζόδρομο της Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου για να απολαύσει τον ήλιο και να περπατήσει κάτω από την Ακρόπολη. Μια στάση στον Διόνυσο για καφέ ή φαγητό, με θέα τον Παρθενώνα και τις αψίδες από το Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού. Για την ώρα του ηλιοβασιλέματος, είναι ωραίο ένα κοκτέιλ στο Galaxy Bar & Restaurant, στον τελευταίο όροφο του Ηilton Αθηνών, από όπου το βλέμμα μπορεί να περιπλανηθεί στην πανοραμική εικόνα της πόλης.

in my life. I may have been hurt by their criticisms but in the end they helped me find the strength to do what I have done. It is human to question and oppose. This has been the case throughout history: no one has gone unscathed. It’s just that, in recent years, I have come to love them. They’ve stopped writing bad things and I’m a little worried. Setting up this exhibition and seeing all of your work, do you have any regrets? I have regretted some things, but not many. It is mostly about some life choices and my behaviour in certain instances. I was careless with people. I would get upset and react unfairly. I still do this sometimes. I have not regretted my basic choices. I have always gone with my instinct. I have never hit a wall in my work, except when that wall was my own self, whom I pressured, ignoring my health. I did make such wrong choices and this is something I regret. I had no “brakes”. I always just pressed ahead. What would you suggest a visitor to Athens should see in 2018? This is a transition period for modern art in Athens because the National Gallery is closed and the National Museum of Contemporary Art is not ready to exhibit its permanent collection. So, I would suggest a stroll down Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, enjoying the sun and walking under the Acropolis. A stop at Dionysos for coffee or a meal with a view of the Parthenon and the arches of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. At sunset, indulge in a good cocktail at the Hilton Athens rooftop Galaxy Bar & Restaurant, from where your eye can wander over a panoramic view of the city. πό τη φιλία του με τον Jean-Michel Basquiat και τη θητεία του στο “Factory” του Andy Warhol, μέχρι την ένταξή του στα μεγαλύτερα μουσεία σύγχρονης τέχνης του κόσμου, αλλά και τη συνεργασία του με τον Kanye West και την Kim Kardashian, ο George Condo θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί η επιτομή του Νεοϋορκέζου καλλιτέχνη. Έχει εξελιχθεί μέσα σε ένα πλήθος άλλων επιδραστικών καλλιτεχνών και σε μια εποχή που δημιούργησε star artists, όμως ο ίδιος κατάφερε να μην αφήσει την περσόνα του να υπερκαλύψει την τέχνη του. Στην Αθήνα, ο Condo παρουσιάζει μια νέα σειρά από αυτοπροσωπογραφίες που δημιουργήθηκαν το 2017 και εκτίθενται για πρώτη φορά στο Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης. Αναλυτικά, η έκθεση, σε επιμέλεια της Αταλάντης Μαρτίνου, περιλαμβάνει 30 έργα, ζωγραφική, γλυπτά και σχέδια, δουλειά των είκοσι τελευταίων ετών, τα οποία εντάσσονται στο κεντρικό θέμα του εκθεσιακού προγράμματος του μουσείου, σχετικά με την εξερεύνηση της ανθρώπινης μορφής. Πρόκειται για ένα θέμα πολύ κοντινό στη δουλειά του Condo, ο οποίος εστιάζει στην απεικόνιση του εαυτού ή των πολλαπλών εαυτών μας, όπως προτιμά να λέει ο ίδιος. Δημιουργεί χαρακτήρες καθημερινούς, όπως έναν τραπεζίτη ή έναν ιερέα, και τους τοποθετεί μέσα σε σύγχρονους παραλογισμούς. Αυτό που τον χαρακτηρίζει είναι η σύγχρονη ανάγνωση εικόνων και τεχνοτροπιών που απηχούν κλασικούς ζωγράφους ή καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Picasso και ο Willem de Kooning.

His friendship with Jean-Michel Basquiat, his tenure at Andy Warhol’s “Factory”, the fact that his work is hosted at the largest modern art museums in the world and his collaboration with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are some of the aspects in George Condo’s life that make him the quintessential New York artist. He evolved among a multitude of influential artists and at a time when ‘star artists’ were being created as a trend, but his persona never dominated his art. In Athens, Condo will be presenting a new series of self-portraits created in 2017, exhibited for the first time at the Museum of Cycladic Art. The exhibition, curated by Atalanti Martinou, presents a total of 30 works –including paintings, sculptures and drawings– which span the past twenty years of the artist’s career. They are all artistic explorations of the human figure, which is the central theme of the Museum’s contemporary exhibitions programme. It is also a theme very close to Condo’s oeuvre. His focus is on the representation of the self or, as he prefers to put it, the representation of our many selves. He creates everyday characters –a banker, a priest– and places them within a modern absurdity context. His distinctive characteristic is his contemporary reading of works and styles echoing classical painters or artists such as Picasso and Willem de Kooning.

Παράλογο και υπερβολικό και έχω την ανάγκη να στραφώ σε κάτι αληθινό. Ως καλλιτέχνης είσαι ένας καθρέφτης, αλλά το να αντικατοπτρίσεις τη σημερινή κουλτούρα δεν είναι αρκετό. Πρέπει να εξελιχθεί σαν οπτική διόρθωση».

Describing his art, he uses the terms ‘psychological cubism’ and ‘artificial realism’ and he insists that in today’s world, a time of turmoil, violence and uncertainty, he has never felt more inspired. In his own words, “fake news has become the norm, and I think now art is the only truth and everything else is a lie. I see today’s world as it is! Absurd and exaggerated –and I need to turn it into something truthful. As an artist you are a mirror, but simply reflecting today’s culture is not enough, it has to come through as a visual correction”.

Κατάφερε να τον συναντήσει μόνο μια φορά μέσα σε αυτό το διάστημα, όμως στη συνέχεια ο Warhol αγόρασε αρκετά έργα από τις πρώτες εκθέσεις του Condo. Συλλέκτες της δουλειάς του είναι η Beyoncé και ο Jay Z, ενώ έχει συνεργαστεί με τον Kanye West φιλοτεχνώντας πέντε διαφορετικά εξώφυλλα για το album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” και μόλις πριν από λίγους μήνες ένα t-shirt για την περιοδεία του West, “Saint Pablo”. Ζωγράφισε ακόμη και μια τσάντα Hermès Birkin για τη σύζυγο του διάσημου ράπερ, την global influencer Kim Kardashian. Είναι μια ιδανική συνεργασία για τον ζωγράφο. «Συνεργάζομαι εξαιρετικά με τον Kanye. Δουλεύει με τους πίνακές μου και δουλεύω με τη μουσική του. Κάνει με τη μουσική πολλά από τα πράγματα που κάνω εγώ στη ζωγραφική». Τι θα ήταν όμως αυτό που περιγράφει την τέχνη του με μια φράση; «Υπάρχουν χαρακτήρες που ζουν στο μυαλό μας και θέλω να τους φέρω στο φως. Αν σκεφτεί κανείς πώς ο νους βλέπει τους ανθρώπους σε αντίθεση με τα μάτια, αυτή είναι η εικόνα που θέλω να δημιουργήσω».

in art. He followed his advice and for eight months he worked on Andy Warhol’s “Factory” team. He only got to meet him once during this time, but Warhol bought several works from Condo’s first exhibitions. He was by then a fullyfledged member of the New York artistic elite and friends with such names as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Keith Haring. He matured artistically when he moved to Europe, first in Cologne and then in Paris, where he lived for ten years. That is when he produced most of the works that make up collections now held in the MoMA in New York, the Washington National Gallery of Art, the Whitney and the Guggenheim museums. He is a true star artist but, unlike Jeff Koons and some of his peers, he does not advertise his personality. Still, he is close to today’s celebrity culture, which he does not criticize. Beyoncé and Jay Z are known to be collectors of his work and he has created five different covers for Kanye West’s album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. Only a few months ago he worked on a T-shirt for West’s “Saint Pablo Tour” and he even created an original Hermès Birkin bag for the famous rapper’s wife, global influencer Kim Kardashian. It is an ideal collaboration and exceptional partnership for the artist, who explains that West works with his paintings as he works with West’s music, doing with music many of the things that Condo does with art. But how would he describe his art in one phrase? “There are characters that live within your mind and I want to bring them to light. κριβώς επειδή όποιος περιηγείται την πρωτεύουσα έχει συνηθίσει να συναντά γλυπτά μόνο σε ανοιχτούς χώρους και πλατείες, η ανακάλυψη κρυμμένων γλυπτικών θησαυρών αποτελεί μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Ανεβαίνοντας κάποιος από το Κολωνάκι στην Πλατεία Δεξαμενής, αν είναι λίγο παρατηρητικός –ώστε να το διακρίνει ανάμεσα σε φυλλωσιές και άνθη βουκαμβίλιας–, μπορεί να ανακαλύψει μια ιδιαίτερη ανάγλυφη προτομή του συγγραφέα Αλέξανδρου Παπαδιαμάντη. Θα μπορούσε να είναι απλώς μια ακόμη προτομή, αν δεν κυκλοφορούσαν παραπληρωματικές ιστορίες της σχέσης του λογοτέχνη με την περιοχή και το παρακείμενο καφενείο-στέκι του. Ο ασκητικός και όχι εξαιρετικά κοινωνικός Αλέξανδρος Παπαδιαμάντης, ο πρώτος συγγραφέας στη χώρα μας που ζούσε από το επάγγελμά του, σύχναζε στο καφενείο δίπλα στην προτομή που φιλοτέχνησε ο Σμυρνιός γλύπτης και ζωγράφος Θωμάς Θωμόπουλος, δέκα περίπου χρόνια μετά τον θάνατο του συγγραφέα. Πού να φανταζόταν ο ερημίτης ότι θα δεχόταν το πρόσωπό του τέτοια «διαπόμπευση», ότι θα προκαλούσε καθημερινά πλέον τους περαστικούς με μια τέτοια «ειδωλολατρική ματαιότητα»; Αυτές τις λέξεις χρησιμοποιούσε για να αποφύγει τον επίμονο φίλο και ποιητή Παύλο Νιρβάνα, ο οποίος ήθελε να απαθανατίσει τη λογοτεχνική αυτή μεγάλη μορφή της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Με δόλιο τρόπο –σύμφωνα με εξομολόγησή του–, ο Νιρβάνας τον έπεισε κι έτσι μας παρέδωσε μια εξαιρετική φωτογραφία, από τις ελάχιστες που υπάρχουν και η οποία τραβήχτηκε στις καρέκλες του καφενείου της Δεξαμενής! Ο Αλέξανδρος Παπαδιαμάντης, ο άγιος των γραμμάτων, ολιγαρκής και αυτάρκης, όταν προσλήφθηκε από την εφημερίδα «Άστυ» και του προτάθηκε μισθός 150 δραχμών, αρνήθηκε λέγοντας: «Πολλές ειναι εκατόν πενήντα. Με φτάνουνε εκατό». Επίκαιρος παρά ποτέ, έλεγε στη «Φόνισσα»: «…Την πλιατσικολογίαν της Τουρκοκρατίας διεδέχθη η φορολογία, και έκτοτε όλος ο περιούσιος λαός εξακολουθεί να δουλεύη διά την μεγάλην κεντρικήν γαστέρα, την ‘ώτα ουκ έχουσαν’…». Εν έτει 1904!!

Those who often stroll around Athens are accustomed to seeing sculptures in squares and other public areas, but discovering hidden sculpted treasures when you least expect it is always a welcome surprise. On the way from the centre of Kolonaki to Dexameni Square, almost hidden amongst the thick foliage of blossoming bougainvillea, lives an embossed bust of Alexandros Papadiamantis. It could be seen as just another ornamental sculpture, if there were no stories linking the writer to this very neighbourhood and to the adjacent coffee house. The austere and somewhat reclusive Alexandros Papadiamantis, the first writer in Greece to actually make a living from writing, used to be a loyal patron of this coffee house. The bust which stands right next to it was created by Smyrna-born sculptor and painter Thomas Thomopoulos about ten years after Papadiamantis’ death. The humble hermit would never have imagined that his face would in time be ‘publicly pilloried’ and that he would provoke everyday passers-by with such ‘idolatrous futility’. These were the very words he used when trying to escape from the persistence of his friend and poet Pavlos Nirvanas who wanted to capture the picture of this literary giant on film. As Nirvanas admitted, he beguiled Papadiamantis into posing for him. The result was a magnificent photograph of the writer, one of the very few that exist, taken right here, at the coffee house on Dexameni Square. When Alexandros Papadiamantis, the frugal and self-sufficient ‘holy man’ of Greek letters, was hired by the newspaper Asti, he turned down the proposed monthly salary of 150 drachmas saying “A hundred and fifty is way too much. One hundred is enough for me”. His words in the novella ‘The Murderess’ sound truer now than ever: [“...The looting of the Ottoman occupation was succeeded by taxation and, since then, all the chosen people have been working so as to fill the great, central belly, the one with no ears...”] And that was written in the year 1904!

ι σας έφερε και πάλι στην Ελλάδα; Ως μπάντα αγαπάμε την Ελλάδα αλλά και εγώ προσωπικά. Με ενέπνεαν πάντα οι συζητήσεις που έκανα με τον πατέρα μου, που ήταν αρχιτέκτονας και φιλόσοφος, ο οποίος μου μιλούσε συνέχεια για τον Σωκράτη και τον Πλάτωνα. Μου έχουν μείνει αυτές οι στιγμές. Τώρα πλέον είμαι στη χώρα που γεννήθηκε η δημοκρατία και είναι ένας λόγος παραπάνω που μου αρέσει. Κάποτε υπήρχε μια δύσκολη πολιτική κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα (σ.σ. δικτατορία) και δεν μπορούσαμε να παίξουμε τη μουσική μας. Τότε μάλλον δεν ήμασταν ευπρόσδεκτοι, όταν όμως οι συνθήκες ήταν κατάλληλες και ήρθαμε για πρώτη φορά μάς υποδέχθηκε στο αεροδρόμιο ο Γιάννης Κουτουβός (σ.σ. ο άνθρωπος που έφερε τους Scorpions στην Ελλάδα) μαζί με μερικές εκατοντάδες φαν. Γιατί πιστεύετε ότι σας αγαπάει το ελληνικό κοινό τόσο πολύ και σας ακολουθεί σε όλες τις συναυλίες; Είναι έρωτας από την πρώτη ματιά… ή καλύτερα από την πρώτη δαγκωνιά, μιας και είμαστε οι Scorpions. Είναι μία ερωτική σχέση αυτή που έχουμε με το ελληνικό κοινό, η οποία επισφραγίζεται φέτος με τη συναυλία μας στο Καλλιμάρμαρο. Θυμάμαι όταν το 2009 παίξαμε στο Καραϊσκάκη, το κοινό ήταν τόσο παθιασμένο. Και μετά ακολούθησε το MTV Unplugged που κάναμε στον Λυκαβηττό και όλοι έλεγαν ότι λόγω οικονομικής κρίσης στην Ελλάδα, δεν θα έρθει άνθρωπος να μας δει, γιατί οι Έλληνες δεν έχουν χρήματα. Όμως όλοι ήταν εκεί. Τρεις μέρες το ελληνικό κοινό έβλεπε την πιο ήρεμη εκδοχή των Scorpions, αλλά και εμείς είδαμε το ελληνικό κοινό από μία άλλη πτυχή, καθώς κάθονταν και απολάμβαναν τη μουσική μας. Το 2010, κάνατε ως μπάντα μία αποχαιρετιστήρια περιοδεία. Τι σας έκανε τότε να αποφασίσετε να αποσυρθείτε; Το 2010 κάναμε ένα άλμπουμ, το “Sting in the Tail”, και είχαμε την αίσθηση με κάποιον τρόπο ότι αυτό το άλμπουμ ήταν τόσο καλό, που έπρεπε να σταματήσουμε στο απόγειό μας και στα 62 μας χρόνια. Όταν λοιπόν κάναμε αυτή την αποχαιρετιστήρια περιοδεία, συνειδητοποιήσαμε ότι ολοένα και περισσότερος νέος κόσμος βρισκόταν στην αρένα, μπροστά από τη σκηνή που παίζαμε. Είχαμε να κάνουμε με τη γενιά του Facebook και η αλήθεια είναι ότι στη σελίδα μας είχαμε πάνω από 1 εκατομμύριο followers και φαν, με την πλειοψηφία αυτών να είναι μεταξύ 16 και 28 χρόνων. Κάναμε λοιπόν το τελευταίο μας live στο Μόναχο το 2012, οπότε γυρίσαμε και ένα ντοκιμαντέρ για την μπάντα μας. Το 2013 μάς ζήτησαν να κάνουμε το MTV Unplugged. Ήταν

What brought you back to Greece? The band loves Greece –and so do I… I was always inspired by the conversations I had with my father, who was an architect and philosopher and who always talked about Socrates and Plato. Those moments have stayed with me. Now I am in the country where democracy was born and this is one more reason why I like it. There was a time when the political situation in Greece was rather difficult [Editor’s note: the dictatorship] and we couldn’t play our music here. I guess we weren’t welcome back then. But when the conditions were right and we came for the first time, we were welcomed at the airport by Yiannis Koutouvos [Editor’s note: the person who brought the Scorpions to Greece] and hundreds of fans. Why do you think the Greek public loves you so much and comes to all your concerts? It was love at first sight... or rather love at first sting, since we are the Scorpions. Our relationship with our Greek fans is erotic and is being consummated with our concert at Kallimarmaro (the Panathenaic Stadium) this year. I remember when we played at the Karaiskaki Stadium in 2009. The audience was so passionate. And then there was the MTV Unplugged concert we did at the Lycabettus Theatre, when everyone said that, given the economic crisis in Greece, no one would come to see us because Greek people didn’t have any money. But everyone was there. For three days, our Greek fans saw the tamest version of the Scorpions and we saw another side of our Greek audience, as they sat and enjoyed our music. In 2010, your band went on a farewell tour. What made you want to stop playing at that point? In 2010 we released our album “Sting in the Tail” and we felt that, in a sense, this album was so good that we should stop at our best, when we were 62 years old. So, when we were doing that farewell tour, we realized that more and more young people were coming to the arenas, right in front of the stage. We were playing for the Facebook generation and the truth is we had over a million followers and fans on our page, most of them aged 16 to 28. So we did our last concert in Munich in 2012, when we also made a documentary about our band. In 2013, they asked us to do the MTV Unplugged concert. It was something we had always wanted to do and it fit right in with our musical history, just as we were concluding our career. Then, at some point I found a book my mother had given me when I started the

κάτι που πάντα θέλαμε και ταίριαζε απόλυτα στη μουσική μας ιστορία, λίγο πριν ολοκληρώσουμε την καριέρα μας. Κάποια στιγμή λοιπόν βρήκα ένα βιβλίο που μου είχε χαρίσει η μαμά μου όταν ξεκινούσα την μπάντα και παρατήρησα στην αφιέρωση που μου έκανε ότι η χρονολογία ήταν το 1965. Πήγα τότε στα παιδιά της μπάντας και είπα «σ’ ένα χρόνο και κάτι κλείνουμε 50 χρόνια ως Scorpions». Συνειδητοποιήσαμε τότε ότι τόσο μακρόβιες μπάντες είναι μόνον οι Stones, οι Beach Boys και οι The Who. Έτσι κυκλοφορήσαμε το “Return to Forever”, ένα bonus CD με παλιό και νέο υλικό για τους φαν. Η πρόθεσή μας ήταν να αποσυρθούμε, όμως αποφασίσαμε ότι πρέπει να δώσουμε στη νέα γενιά το πνεύμα της ροκ μουσικής, έτσι όπως εμείς το πρεσβεύουμε. Στο εξώφυλλο του DVD για το ντοκιμαντέρ σας γράψατε «Πρέπει να πεις αντίο για να δεις πόσο ευπρόσδεκτος είσαι»… Ακριβώς! Ο κόσμος πίστευε ότι οι Scorpions θα παίζουν για πάντα. Έτσι, όταν είπαμε ότι αποσυρόμαστε, ήταν σαν ένα ξύπνημα για τον κόσμο μας. Δεν είχαμε αυτή την πρόθεση, ήταν όμως το αποτέλεσμα μίας απόφασης. Και το αποτέλεσμα ήταν πολύ δυναμικό από το κοινό. Καταλάβαμε ότι η αγάπη του κόσμου ήταν πάντα εκεί και με την απόφασή μας την αφυπνίσαμε. Μην ξεχνάτε ότι είναι και 50 χρόνια. Ήμασταν η γενιά της κασέτας, του old school. Ήταν η καλύτερη στιγμή για να εμπνεύσουμε τη γενιά του Facebook και να εμπνευστούμε και εμείς. 53 χρόνια Scorpions, τι θα θέλατε να κάνετε πριν τελειώσει η καριέρα σας; Ο χρόνος θα δείξει τι θα κάνουμε. Δεν θέλω να πω ότι επιθυμούμε να παίξουμε στο φεγγάρι. Ξέρω τον Richard Branson αλλά θα κοστίσει μάλλον πολύ (γέλια)… Αυτό που είναι για μας ξεκάθαρο είναι ότι είμαστε αρκετά έξυπνοι, ώστε να δούμε τι άλλο θα κάνουμε όταν η στιγμή είναι η κατάλληλη. Όλα αλλάζουν γύρω μας, ο κόσμος αλλάζει πιο γρήγορα από ποτέ. Αφήνομαι λοιπόν στη στιγμή. Αν είμαι ανοιχτός στα πράγματα, τότε μπορώ να δεχθώ αμέτρητες ιδέες και προοπτικές.

band and I noticed that the inscription she had written was dated 1965. So I went to the guys in the band and said “in just over a year we will have been the Scorpions for 50 years”. We realized then that the only bands that had lived so long were the Stones, the Beach Boys and The Who. So we released “Return to Forever”, a bonus CD with old and new material for our fans. We had intended to retire, but we decided that we had to give the new generation the spirit of rock music as we represent it. On the cover of the DVD of your documentary you wrote “You have to say goodbye to see how welcome you are”... Exactly! People thought the Scorpions would play forever. So, when we said we were stopping, it was like a wake-up call to our fans. That wasn’t our intention, but that’s what our decision did. And the response from our audience was very dynamic. We realized that people’s love had always been there and our decision aroused it. Don’t forget this is 50 years we’re talking about. We were the cassette generation, the old school. It was the ideal moment to inspire the Facebook generation and be inspired by them. Fifty-three years of Scorpions –what would you like to do before you finish your career? Time will tell what we shall do. I don’t want to say we want to play on the moon. I know Richard Branson, but it would probably cost a lot (laughs)... What is clear to us is that we are smart enough to see what else to do when the time is right. Everything around us is changing. The world is changing faster than ever. So I leave it up to the moment. If I’m open to things, I can see countless ideas and prospects.

παλκόνια, γλάστρες με γαρουφαλιές, κρασί στο χώμα, αγόρια στις γωνιές, ξανθές κοπέλες, άσπρες φορεσιές, δυόσμο στα χέρια, στα μάτια ροδαυγές» τραγουδούσε ο Δημήτρης Μητροπάνος, περιγράφοντας έτσι την ομορφιά και τη διαφορετικότητα της συνοικίας που «κρύβεται» ακόμα σχεδόν αναλλοίωτη στη σκιά του βράχου της Ακρόπολης. Σε αυτόν τον λιλιπούτειο συνοικισμό που λέγεται «Αναφιώτικα» έζησαν όσοι έχτισαν και δημιούργησαν τα ανάκτορα του Βασιλιά Όθωνα, τη σημερινή Βουλή των Ελλήνων! Τα μικρά σοκάκια που οδηγούν σε κάθε αυλόπορτα ήταν και παραμένουν ανώνυμα. Αρκεί ένας αριθμός για κάθε ένα από τα 45 μικροσκοπικά εναπομείναντα σπιτάκια σε γαλανόλευκα χρώματα. Πράσινα τοπία και καλλιτεχνικά θαύματα της φύσης αγκαλιάζουν αρμονικά τόσο τα ασβεστωμένα σπιτάκια με τα μπλε παραθυρόφυλλα και τους ανθοστόλιστους κήπους, όσο και τα πέτρινα γραφικά σοκάκια. Η συνοικία που μοιάζει να «φυτεύτηκε» κάτω από τον επιβλητικό ιερό βράχο της Ακρόπολης πήρε «πνοή» τον 19ο αιώνα και αναπνέει ακόμα και σήμερα ταξιδεύοντάς μας σε ένα νησί χωρίς θάλασσα. Προτού η περιοχή μετατραπεί σε όαση για την πολύβουη Αθήνα είχε την ονομασία «Μαύρες Πέτρες» γιατί, σύμφωνα με το «Οδοιπορικό στην Ελλάδα» το 1841 του Χανς Κρίστιαν Άντερσεν, εκεί βρίσκονταν τα σπίτια των σκλάβων από την Αφρική. «Λίγες οικογένειες μαύρων, δούλοι από τον καιρό της Τουρκοκρατίας, ξετρύπωσαν από τα χαμηλά χωματένια σπίτια τους», γράφει χαρακτηριστικά για τη γειτονιά. Στην αρχαιότητα, ωστόσο, ήταν απαγορευτικό να κατοικεί κάποιος εκεί καθώς ήταν περιοχή προστατευμένη από τον χρησμό του μαντείου των Δελφών. Η απαγόρευση παραβιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά από τους πρόσφυγες του Πελοποννησιακού Πολέμου. Η δημιουργία της κορνίζας της Πλάκας Το 1860 είναι η χρονιά που ξεκινά να διαμορφώνεται αυτή η λιλιπούτεια συνοικία που μεγάλο της μέρος διατηρείται έως και σήμερα. Τότε έφτασαν στην Αθήνα εργάτες από την Ανάφη, έτσι ώστε να απασχοληθούν ως χτίστες στην ανοικοδόμηση της πόλης και την ανέγερση των ανακτόρων του Όθωνα. Ως πρώτοι οικιστές και δημιουργοί των μοναδικών αυτών κατοικιών αναφέρονται οι Γιώργος Δαμίγος και Μάρκος Σιγάλας. Ο ένας ξυλουργός και ο άλλος κτίστης –και οι δύο από την Ανάφη. Ο λόγος που επέλεξαν την περιοχή, απλός και μοναδικός: τους θύμιζε το νησί τους, ήθελαν να νιώθουν την πατρίδα τους. Το παράδειγμά τους ακολούθησαν και άλλοι συμπατριώτες τους και σιγά σιγά δημιουργήθηκε ένας νησιωτικός παράδεισος με στενά δρομάκια και μικρά σπίτια στα χρώματα του Αιγαίου. Κανένα από αυτά τα σπιτάκια δεν ξεπερνούσε τα 36 τ.μ. και τα σοκάκια ανάμεσά τους μικροσκοπικά. Η Καλλιρρόη Παρρέν γράφει στον «Μικρό Ρωμιό» για τους Αναφιώτες: «Ζούσαν κυρίως στις εξώπορτες, στην αυλή ή ακόμη στον δρόμο παρά στα σπίτια τους. Εκεί συζητούσαν και μάλωναν, εκεί έτρωγαν, έπαιζαν, πλένονταν και ντύνονταν τα παιδιά, εκεί αντάλλασσαν επισκέψεις, διαδίδονταν οι ειδήσεις και παντρολογούνταν τα φρόνιμα κορίτσια…».

“Balconies, flower pots, wine on the ground, boys in the corners, blond girls in white costumes, mint in hands, eyes roaring,” sang Dimitris Mitropanos (a very well known greek singer) describing the beauty and diversity of the neighborhood that has been “hidden” for years in the shadow of Acropolis. In this Lilliputian settlement called “Anafiotika” lived those who built and created the palace of King Othon... the Greek Parliament! The small alleys leading to each door were and remain anonymous. A number is just enough for each of the 45 tiny remaining houses in blue-white colors. The green landscapes of the scattered by artistic wonders, harmoniously embrace both the whitewashed houses with blue shutters and flower gardens, as well as the picturesque stone alleys. The neighborhood that seems to have been “planted” under the imposing sacred cliff of Acropolis was born in the 19th century and still remains alive and traveling to an island without sea. Before the area was converted into an oasis that takes us away from the bustling Athens, it was called “Black Stones”. This is because, according to the “Traveling in Greece” in 1841 by Hans Christian Andersen, there were African slave houses from at this exact place. “Few families of black people, slaves from the Ottoman domination, came out from their low out of soil made houses” as he exactly writes about the neighborhood. In the ancient times, however, it was forbidden to live there, as it was an area protected by the oracle of Delphi. The refugees of the Peloponnesian War first violated the ban. The creation of the Plaka picturesque 1860 is the year that this tiny but gorgeous district is formed, a part of which is still alive making an island without sea to exist. At that time, workers from Anafi, a Greek island, arrived in Athens to work as builders, to rebuild the city and to erect Otto’s palaces. Giorgos Damigos and Markos Sigalas are the first settlers and initiators of these unique houses. Damigos who worked as a carpenter and Sigalas as a builder were both from Anafi. The reason they chose the area was simple but also unique. This place reminded them their island. They wanted to feel like home. Other compatriots followed their example and they slowly formed a paradise island with narrow alleys and small houses in the colors of the Aegean. None of these houses were bigger than 36 sq. meters and the streets between them extremely narrow. Callirhoe Parren writes in “Little Romio” about the Anaphiots: “They lived mainly on the front doors, in the yard or on the street rather than in their homes. There they talked and mocked, there, they ate, played, washed and dressed the children, there were exchanges of visits, the news spread, and the wise girls chose their husbands...” However, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Anafiots and the residents of Plaka had great hatred. The inhabitants of Plaka did not let the “peasants” go to Filomoussou Square –and the inhabitants of Anafiotika responded with a ban

Αναφιώτες και Πλακιώτες όμως είχαν, στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα, μεγάλη έχθρα. Οι κάτοικοι της Πλάκας δεν άφηναν «τους χωριάτες» να συχνάζουν στην πλατεία Φιλομούσου Εταιρείας –και οι Αναφιώτες απαντούσαν με απαγόρευση κυκλοφορίας του κάθε Πλακιώτη στη γειτονιά τους. Οι εργάτες από την Ανάφη δεν παρέλειψαν να αναστηλώσουν και να περιποιηθούν και τις δύο εκκλησίες της περιοχής. Ο Αϊ-Γιώργης του Βράχου (ονομάζεται έτσι γιατί βρίσκεται στη βάση του βράχου της Ακρόπολης) και ο Άγιος Συμεών στο δυτικό άκρο της γειτονιάς. Ο Αϊ-Γιώργης μάλιστα βρίσκεται μόλις μερικά μέτρα μακριά από τον βράχο στη μνήμη του Κωνσταντίνου Κουκίδη, φύλακα της Ακρόπολης, ο οποίος, σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, τυλίχθηκε με την ελληνική σημαία και πήδηξε από τον Ιερό Βράχο όταν τα γερμανικά στρατεύματα κατοχής εισέβαλαν στην Αθήνα στις 27 Απριλίου του 1941.

on the circulation of everyone living in Plaka in their neighborhood. The Anafi workers did not neglect to restore and care for the two churches in the area. Saint George of Vrachos (as it is at the base of the Acropolis rock) and Agios Symeon at the western edge of the neighborhood. Agios Georgios is just a few meters away from the rock in memory of Constantine Koukidis. Guardian of the Acropolis, who, according to tradition, was wrapped in the Greek flag and jumped from the Acropolis when the German troops invaded Athens on 27 April 1941. Today, 45 tiny white coloured houses are preserved in the beautiful paths of the Acropolis, 15 of which are listed as prοtected.

Like the flowers that cover the cracks of the walls, Anafiotika covers the signs of time and just a few meters from the roads full of traffic of the capital they give a short breath of vacations.

The remaining inhabitants still gather in the yards and live with the insouciance of a village that seems to have been forgotten by time. They are indifferent to the lack of cars, the few square meters, wanting to experience every of their days where the ancient Athenians built the Acropolis. They give a smile, they sing in their yards, and offer the passers-by and tourists homemade traditional Greek deserts.

Οι εναπομείναντες κάτοικοι μαζεύονται ακόμα στις αυλές και ζουν με την ανεμελιά ενός χωριού που μοιάζει να έχει ξεχαστεί στον χρόνο. Αδιαφορούν για την έλλειψη αυτοκινήτων, τα λίγα τετραγωνικά, καρδιοχτυπούν εκεί που οι αρχαίοι Αθηναίοι έκτιζαν την Ακρόπολη. Χαρίζουν χαμόγελα, τραγουδούν στις αυλές τους και κερνούν γλυκό του κουταλιού τους περαστικούς και τους τουρίστες.

αλώς ορίσατε στην Αθήνα! Τι πιστεύετε ότι είναι αυτό που κάνει το κοινό να σας αγαπάει τόσο πολύ; Είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων για τη σχέση αυτή, που μένει σταθερή τόσα χρόνια. Είναι κι αυτή μια ανθρώπινη σχέση. Η σχέση που έχω με το κοινό σίγουρα δεν είναι «της μίας βραδιάς» αλλά πραγματική, μακροχρόνια φιλία. Και ως καλλιτέχνιδα, δεν μπορώ παρά να νιώθω ευτυχής και ευγνώμων. Δεν ξέρω ποιο είναι το μυστικό των επιτυχημένων μακροχρόνιων σχέσεων. Ίσως πρέπει κανείς να είναι πιστός στον εαυτό του, να είναι ειλικρινής –τόσο στη σκηνή όσο και στη ζωή. Προέρχεστε από μουσική οικογένεια. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που σας ώθησε να αφιερωθείτε στη μουσική από παιδί; Ναι, προέρχομαι από μουσική οικογένεια, με την έννοια ότι όλοι στην οικογένεια αγαπούσαμε να τραγουδάμε και να χορεύουμε. Ένα από αυτά τα τραγούδια είναι το “J’y crois encore”, που σημαίνει «Πιστεύω ακόμα». Στον τελευταίο μου δίσκο, που φέρει τον τίτλο “Camouflage”, ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια είναι το “Painting in the rain” (Ζωγραφίζοντας στη βροχή), που έχει πάλι το ίδιο θέμα. Αλλά, σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, θα έλεγα ότι το τραγούδι που ξεχωρίζω είναι το “Don’t give up”, των Peter Gabriel και Kate Bush. Υπάρχει κάποιος καλλιτέχνης με τον οποίο θα θέλατε να συνεργαστείτε επί σκηνής; Και ποιο τραγούδι θα θέλατε να ερμηνεύσετε μαζί; Είχα τη χαρά και την τύχη να συνεργαστώ με πολύ σημαντικούς καλλιτέχνες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο. Όσον αφορά τους Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες, έχω συνεργαστεί με τη Νάνα Μούσχουρη, τον Γιώργο Περρή, που είναι και καλός μου φίλος, και τον Μάριο Φραγκούλη. Θα ήθελα πολύ να είχα προλάβει να τραγουδήσω με τον George Michael. Ο θάνατός του ήταν τραγικό συμβάν. Ένας από τους καλλιτέχνες που θαυμάζω είναι ο Michael Bublé. Θα μου άρεσε πολύ να ερμηνεύσω μαζί του ένα οποιοδήποτε τραγούδι. Μπορείτε να μας πείτε δυο λόγια για τη φιλία σας με τη Νάνα Μούσχουρη; Είναι μια πολύ ξεχωριστή σχέση για μένα. Welcome to Athens! Why do you think the audience love you so much? I am so grateful to have had this relation for so many years. It is like a relation between people. Ours is not a “one-night” affair but a true, long-term relationship. And, as an artist, I can only be thankful and grateful. I do not know what the secrets of long-term relations are. Maybe just being true to oneself, being honest –in life and on stage.

You come from a musical family. Is this the reason why, since your childhood, you decided to dedicate yourself to the music scene? Yes, a musical family in the sense that we sang and danced in the family with great pleasure. But my mother was a housewife and my father’s main job had nothing to do with music, either –even though he did have the chance to perform as a musician with Petula Clark. But music was always part of our life in our family. Music and food! That is the Italian origin, from my mother’s side. I did not consciously choose to be a musician; it came very naturally to me and very early. There was also a period when I had considered studying law and becoming a lawyer specialized in children’s rights. But music it was! Which of your songs was the most motivating for you during the hardest times of your life? I have several songs that talk about resilience and the courage to go on. “J’y crois encore”, which means “I still believe in it”, is one of them. In my last album, “Camouflage”, the title “Painting in the rain” is about a similar theme and it is one of my favourites. But, at a personal level, I would rather mention a song by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, “Don’t give up”. Is there an artist that you would still want to be on stage with? And which song would you want to sing together? I have had the chance to perform with amazing artists around the world. Among Greek artists, I have appeared with Nana Mouskouri, George Perris, who is a close friend, and Mario Frangoulis. I would have loved to perform with George Michael. What a tragedy his passing was... One artist I admire is Michael Bublé. I would love to perform with him... any song. Could you tell us about your friendship with Nana Mouskouri? She is someone very special for me. I have been a fan for so long. And hers was the first concert I went to. It was a birthday gift from my parents. You can imagine how I felt many years later when I met her and when I had the honour to perform with her. Her career is exemplary for an artist like me. She is like a lighthouse in the horizon, with a career spanning decades and countries. I know how difficult this is, especially as a woman in the music industry. She managed this so elegantly, always remaining true to herself, to her art. Even though I have the honour to consider myself her friend, I will always look up to her. Why the name “Camouflage”? This is the name of the album, but also of a song on this album. The song is about our longing to blend in, sometimes to

που καλύπτει πολλές δεκαετίες και χώρες ανά τον κόσμο. Και ξέρω καλά πόσο δύσκολο είναι αυτό, ειδικά για μια γυναίκα στη μουσική βιομηχανία. Κι εκείνη το έχει καταφέρει με μοναδική αξιοπρέπεια, παραμένοντας πάντα πιστή στον εαυτό της και στην τέχνη της. Παρόλο που έχω την τιμή να αποκαλώ τον εαυτό μου «φίλη της», για μένα θα είναι πάντα και καταρχήν πρότυπο.

protect ourselves, but also to establish a connection, to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Often this comes at the price of erasing our true selves and suppressing our identities, wishes and desires. It can be helpful, wearing a mask all the time, and sometimes it is unnecessary. This is my favourite title on the album.

Γιατί επιλέξατε τον τίτλο “Camouflage”; Πρόκειται για τον τίτλο του δίσκου αλλά και ενός από τα τραγούδια. Οι στίχοι μιλούν για την ανάγκη μας να ανήκουμε κάπου, να προστατεύουμε τον εαυτό μας κάποιες φορές, αλλά και να κάνουμε σχέσεις, να αποτελούμε μέρος ενός πράγματος μεγαλύτερου από εμάς τους ίδιους. Κάποιες φορές αυτό έχει ένα τίμημα. Μας αναγκάζει να αγνοήσουμε τον πραγματικό μας εαυτό, να καταπιέσουμε την ταυτότητα, τις ανάγκες και τις επιθυμίες μας. Κάποιες φορές ίσως είναι χρήσιμο να φοράς μια μάσκα, κάποιες άλλες, όμως, είναι περιττό. Αυτό είναι το αγαπημένο μου τραγούδι στον συγκεκριμένο δίσκο.

What inspired you to write a song about homophobia? My song was not about homophobia but about love –in all its forms, including love between two men or two women. It was about the universality of love and the fact that there is no “difference”. This is why the song “La différence” ends with the phrase “Mais quelle différence?”, meaning “But what difference?”. My motivation was my profound belief in the fact that love is love. This is not about LGBT rights, it is simpler than that. It is about basic human rights. One does not need to be a supporter of any cause or community to recognize that the most important thing in life is to love and be loved. And no one has the right to forbid this to anyone. This is not a question of tolerance, either. We tolerate something that is annoying. Love between two human beings cannot be annoying. Equality is non-negotiable.

Τι σας ώθησε να γράψετε ένα τραγούδι για την ομοφοβία; Το τραγούδι μου δεν αφορά την ομοφοβία αλλά την αγάπη, σε όλες τις μορφές της, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της αγάπης ανάμεσα σε δύο άντρες ή δύο γυναίκες. Αφορά την καθολικότητα της αγάπης και το γεγονός ότι δεν υπάρχουν πραγματικές «διαφορές». Γι’ αυτό και το τραγούδι “La différence” τελειώνει με τη φράση “Mais quelle différence?”, που σημαίνει «Μα ποια διαφορά;». Αυτό που με ώθησε να γράψω το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι είναι η βαθιά πεποίθησή μου ότι η αγάπη είναι μία. Δεν έχει να κάνει με τα δικαιώματα της LGBT κοινότητας, είναι πολύ πιο απλό. Το θέμα είναι τα βασικά ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα. Δεν χρειάζεται να υποστηρίζει κανείς κάποιον σκοπό, κάποιο κίνημα ή κάποια κοινότητα για να αναγνωρίσει ότι το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα στη ζωή είναι το να αγαπάς και να αγαπιέσαι. Κανείς δεν έχει το δικαίωμα να το απαγορεύσει σε οποιονδήποτε. Και δεν έχει να κάνει με την ανεκτικότητα της κοινωνίας. Ανεχόμαστε κάτι που είναι ενοχλητικό. Η αγάπη ανάμεσα σε δύο ανθρώπους δεν μπορεί να είναι κάτι ενοχλητικό. Η ισότητα δεν είναι διαπραγματεύσιμη.

ι γεύση έχει άραγε η ανάμνηση ενός καλοκαιριού; Για τον Βασίλη Παπαματθαίου, τον εμπνευστή και δημιουργό του νέου παγωτατζίδικου στην Πρωτογενούς 2 στου Ψυρρή, σίγουρα όχι κάποια κλασική. Για τον γνωστό ζαχαροπλάστη, μέσα σε ένα χωνάκι σορμπέ από ροδάκινο, βερίκοκο και δεντρολίβανο, ή ένα κυπελλάκι με παγωτό από φασόλι βανίλιας από τη Μαδαγασκάρη και την Ταϊτή περικλείεται η πιο χαρούμενη και ξέγνοιαστη περίοδος του χρόνου στην Ελλάδα, το καλοκαίρι. «Έχω εργαστεί δέκα χρόνια ως ζαχαροπλάστης στο εξωτερικό σε μερικά από τα καλύτερα εστιατόρια, έχω φτιάξει αμέτρητα γλυκά, αλλά το παγωτό ήταν πάντα το πάθος μου. Πρόκειται για μια χρονοβόρα και απαιτητική από άποψη τεχνικής διαδικασία, η οποία χρειάζεται μεγάλη εμπειρία και μεράκι για να αποδώσει ένα σωστό αποτέλεσμα» αναφέρει ο Βασίλης, ο οποίος έχοντας ιδρύσει εδώ και επτά χρόνια την εταιρεία «Παράξενες Ύλες», που εμπορεύεται πρώτες ύλες ζαχαροπλαστικής άριστης ποιότητας, έκανε το όνειρό του πραγματικότητα και δημιούργησε πριν από δύο μήνες περίπου έναν χώρο όπου οι προθήκες με τις πάστες φρούτων, τα φύλλα ζελατίνης και τα βρώσιμα λουλούδια συνυπάρχουν με ένα υπερσύγχρονο εργαστήριο παγωτού. «Το Κόκκιον ήταν ο καλύτερος τρόπος να αξιοποιήσω όλα όσα είχα στα χέρια μου από εξοπλισμό και πρώτες ύλες και να αναδείξω τη γευστική υπεροχή ενός παγωτού ή σορμπέ που έχει φτιαχτεί μόνο από τα καλύτερα υλικά», δηλώνει. Φρέσκο ελληνικό γάλα, φρέσκα φρούτα εποχής, μασκαρπόνε και ανθόγαλα φτιαγμένα από τον ίδιο, εκλεκτοί ξηροί καρποί και ο καλύτερος χαλβάς γίνονται στα χέρια του μια πλούσια γκάμα παγωτών που χωρίζονται ανάλογα με τη βάση τους, σε παγωτά παρφέ, ξηρών καρπών, σοκολάτας, κρέμας και σορμπέ. «Οι επιλογές ποικίλλουν, σύμφωνα με την εποχή και τη διάθεσή μου. Διατίθενται πάνω από 30 διαφορετικές γεύσεις και ποτέ δεν υπάρχει συγκεκριμένη λίστα παγωτών. Αγαπώ να κάνω ιδιαίτερους συνδυασμούς και να βλέπω την ευχαρίστηση και την έκπληξη στο πρόσωπο όλων εκείνων που αναζητούν ένα “τεχνικό” παγωτό υψηλής ποιότητας. Αυτή είναι η μεγαλύτερη ανταμοιβή μου».

What does the memory of a summer day taste like? For Vassilis Papamatthaiou, the founder and creator of the new ice cream parlour on 2 Protogenous Street in Psiri, it is definitely not a mainstream taste. For the famous confectioner, summer –the most carefree and joyous time of the year in Greece– tastes like a cone of peach, apricot and rosemary sorbet, or a cup of Madagascar and Tahiti vanilla pod cream. “I have worked as a pastry chef for ten years in some of the best restaurants in the world. I have made countless deserts, but ice cream has always been my passion. The actual process of making ice cream is extremely time-consuming and involves a very precise technique. It takes experience and some hefty doses of love to get the best results”, says Vassilis, who has been running his company “Paraxenes Yles” (Uncommon Ingredients), an outlet that sells confectionary products of the highest quality, for seven years now. Two months ago, the inventive chef made his dream come true and opened a shop where, right next to the displays with the fruit pastes, the gelatin sheets and edible flowers, he runs a state-of-the-art ice cream workshop. “Kokkion turned out to be the ideal way of combining all my resources, equipment and materials, to create an excellent quality product: an ice cream or a sorbet made only with the best ingredients”. Fresh Greek milk, fresh fruit, mascarpone and cream he makes himself, top quality nuts and the best halvah are transformed into a rich variety of ice cream flavours, which can be distinguished –depending on their base– to parfait, nuts, chocolate, cream and sorbet. “There’s a wide range of options which I pick from, depending on the time of year and my mood. There are more than 30 different flavours but there’s not a permanent list in my shop. I love to mix and match and see the satisfaction and surprise on my customers’ face; the ones who look for an artisanal, top quality ice cream. This is my greatest reward”. Οι συντονιστές της διοργάνωσης Ιωάννης Τροχόπουλος και Εριφύλη Μαρωνίτη ξεφυλλίζουν μαζί μας τις… σελίδες των βιβλίων που θα υπάρχουν παντού στην πόλη και με όλους τους τρόπους. υρία Μαρωνίτη, πώς ανέλαβε ο Δήμος τη διοργάνωση «Αθήνα: Παγκόσμια Πρωτεύουσα Βιβλίου»; Εριφύλη Μαρωνίτη: Μετά τη φιλοξενία της “Documenta”, η Αθήνα έδειξε ότι μπορεί να φιλοξενήσει μεγάλες διοργανώσεις και να αναδείξει τη σύγχρονη πολιτιστική της παραγωγή και δημιουργία. Έτσι, λοιπόν, η Αθήνα κατέθεσε μία πρόταση, με πρώτο βασικό άξονα την ανάδειξη της συνάφειας του βιβλίου με άλλες μορφές τεχνών και με τις επιστήμες. Ο δεύτερος άξονας, που ήταν και κληρονομιά της “Documenta”, είναι ότι θα επιστρατεύσουμε και θα συνεργαστούμε με τους εξαιρετικούς φορείς που διαθέτουμε ενώ παράλληλα θα προσπαθήσουμε να έχουμε μία διασπορά των εκδηλώσεων σε όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερο εύρος στην πόλη. Αυτό λοιπόν το πρόγραμμα εγκρίθηκε από την UNESCO και χρηματοδοτήθηκε σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τον Δήμο Αθηναίων. Αναζητήθηκαν εν μέρει χορηγοί και δωρητές, ενώ συμπεριέλαβε και αυτοχρηματοδοτούμενες δράσεις. Κύριε Τροχόπουλε, τι επιδιώκει η Αθήνα ως Παγκόσμια Πρωτεύουσα Βιβλίου κατά τη διάρκεια της διοργάνωσης αλλά και μετά από αυτήν; Ιωάννης Τροχόπουλος: Η διοργάνωση, με σύνθημα «Βιβλία Παντού», θέλει να αγγίζει ολόκληρη την πόλη, κάθε γειτονιά, κάθε ομάδα, κάθε κατηγορία, κάθε ηλικία, τους τουρίστες της Αθήνας, αλλά κυρίως κοινωνικά στρώματα που νιώθουν απομονωμένα και μακριά από τις εξελίξεις, όπως τους πρόσφυγες και τους μετανάστες. Μοιάζει πολύ φιλόδοξος στόχος, όταν αναφέρεσαι σε ένα τόσο ευρύ φάσμα ανθρώπων, και στηρίζεται στη φιλοσοφία της συνεργασίας και της συνέργειας. Μετά το πέρας της διοργάνωσης, λοιπόν, ευελπιστούμε ότι κάποιες από αυτές τις δράσεις μπορούν να συνεχιστούν. Ποια είναι η φιλοσοφία επάνω στην οποία θα κινηθεί το πρόγραμμα; Ε.Μ.: Θα κάνουμε μία γιορτή με αφετηρία το βιβλίο, που δεν θα είναι ελιτίστικη, θα απευθύνεται σε όλους, γι’ αυτό ψάχνουμε τρόπο να επικοινωνήσουμε με όλους.

Ms. Maroniti, how did the Municipality of Athens come to be assigned the “Athens 2018 World Book Capital” programme? Erifili Maroniti: “The successful completion of ‘Documenta’ proved that the city can host big events and showcase its modern cultural wealth and creativity. So, Athens submitted a proposal primarily focused on highlighting how books are related to the various forms of art and to the sciences. Another important feature of the proposal –and that was partly a legacy of ‘Documenta’– was our intention to recruit and work with the numerous excellent agencies in Athens and to expand the scope of the events so as to involve as much of the city as possible. This proposal was approved by UNESCO and was largely funded by the Municipality of Athens. We also sought sponsors and donors and we organized self-funding events and actions. Mr.Trohopoulos, what is Athens hoping to achieve as the World Book Capital programme unfolds, but also after its completion? Ioannis Trohopoulos: The programme, under the moto ‘Books Everywhere’, aspires to impact the entire city, every neighbourhood, every community, every age group, even the tourists visiting Athens, but –above all– it hopes to involve those who feel socially isolated and excluded from all kinds of cultural exchange, for instance the communities of refugees and immigrants. It may sound like an overly ambitious goal, aimed as it is at such a wide range of social groups, but it is based on a model of collaboration and synergies. After the conclusion of the programme, we hope that some of the actions and initiatives can be further pursued. What is the main concept behind the whole programme? E.M: It is going to be a celebration where books provide the starting point. However, it is not meant to address the elite but each and every one and that is why we are trying to reach out in all directions. We are working with the Na-

Κάνουμε pop up αναγνώσεις, αυτοσχεδιάζουμε, αναδεικνύουμε αυτούς που δεν έχουν αναγνωριστεί. Ι.Τ.: Αντιμετωπίζουμε το βιβλίο ως στοιχείο διαμόρφωσης ενός περιβάλλοντος δημιουργικότητας, προώθησης της ανάγνωσης και της περιέργειας, με στόχο να ανοίξουμε τους ορίζοντές μας. Σκοπός μας είναι να έρθει το ευρύτερο κοινό σε επαφή με το βιβλίο και την ανάγνωση, με τρόπο δημιουργικό και με εκδηλώσεις που ξαφνιάζουν ευχάριστα τους κατοίκους της πόλης. We run pop-up reading events, we improvise and we try to promote the work of those who have not enjoyed public recognition. I.T: We look at books as an instrument for developing a creative environment, a way to promote reading and to enhance curiosity, with an aim to broaden our horizons. Our goal is to bring everyone closer to books and reading in a creative way and with events that shall pleasantly surprise the city’s population. We also encourage the collaboration between stakeholders in the world of books and cultural organizations and associations –big or small–, libraries, museums, cultural centres and independent creative groups in the city.

Ποιες εκδηλώσεις θεωρείτε ότι θα είναι πιο ενδιαφέρουσες για τους τουρίστες; Ε.Μ.: Η κατηγορία των ξένων συγγραφέων έχει δύο θεματικές: μεγάλες προσωπικότητες και εθνικές λογοτεχνίες. Εκεί η συνεργασία μας με τις πρεσβείες και τα ξενόγλωσσα ινστιτούτα βοηθάει στη μεγαλύτερη προσέλευση. Σ’ ένα μέρος των εκδηλώσεών μας, που γίνονται σε συνεργασία με το Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών & Επιδαύρου, υπάρχουν αγγλικοί υπότιτλοι. Συνεχίζουμε μία πολιτική εξωστρέφειας του δημάρχου Αθηναίων, για να είμαστε μία δίγλωσση πρωτεύουσα ακριβώς επειδή θέλουμε να απευθυνθούμε στον ξένο επισκέπτη. Προεξοφλούμε ότι ξέρει αγγλικά, δεν προεξοφλούμε ότι έχει αγγλοσαξονική κουλτούρα. Το λέω αυτό γιατί ετοιμάζουμε μία μεγάλη έκθεση στο Βυζαντινό Μουσείο, με το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού, με θέμα «Το βιβλίο και η γραφή στο Βυζάντιο». Αυτό απευθύνεται και στους Δυτικοευρωπαίους, αλλά και σε Σλαβόφωνους και Ρώσους. Επίσης ενδιαφέρον μπορούν να βρουν οι τουρίστες σε εικαστικές εκδηλώσεις όπως αυτή με τίτλο «Αγαθόφρων, ο Άτλας του Συλλέκτη» στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη.

Which events do you think will be more appealing to the city’s tourists? E.M: The category of foreign authors has two key themes: great personalities and national literatures. This is why we work closely with foreign embassies and institutes which will ultimately boost attendance. Some of our events which are held in collaboration with the Athens & Epidaurus Festival come with English subtitles. In line with the outward-looking policy established by our Mayor, we aim at branding Athens as a bilingual capital, precisely because we want to address foreign visitors to the city. We think of our tourists as English speaking but we do not assume they have an Anglo-Saxon cultural background. I am saying this because we are currently working, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, on an exhibition that will be held at the Byzantine Museum about “Books and Writing in Byzantium”. It is an event of interest to a Western European audience as well as to Slavic speaking and Russian visitors. Tourists might also enjoy a series of art events, such as the experiential installation entitled “Agathophron / The Collector’s Atlas” at the Benaki Museum.

οιες ήταν οι προτεραιότητές σας σε σχέση με το περιεχόμενο της εκπομπής; Ειρήνη Κολιδά: Αυτή η εκπομπή δεν αφορά μόνο τις γυναίκες. Ο στόχος ήταν να βγάλουμε τον κόσμο από το σπίτι, προκειμένου να ασχοληθεί με κάτι πιο δραστήριο, πιο υγιές. Τα θέματα αφορούν τον άνδρα και τη γυναίκα. Ιλένια Γουίλιαμς: Το πιο ευχάριστο κομμάτι είναι η ενότητα με τα αθλήματα. Θέλουμε να περνάει ευχάριστα η ώρα και να υπάρχει ωραία εικόνα, δεν θέλουμε να φορτώσουμε με προβλήματα τη σκέψη των τηλεθεατών. Έχουμε εγκαταλείψει την έννοια της καλής ζωής, λόγω της καθημερινής πίεσης και της κρίσης; Ε.Κ.: Επειδή είναι δύσκολες εποχές, είναι πολυτέλεια να ασχοληθείς πολύ με τον εαυτό σου. Όμως τα τελευταία χρόνια, η υγιεινή διατροφή και η γυμναστική έχουν μπει στη ζωή των ανθρώπων, οι οποίοι επίσης έχουν αγαπήσει λίγο παραπάνω τον εαυτό τους. Ι. Γ.: Κι εγώ το πιστεύω αυτό. Υπάρχουν πάρα πολλά μέσα στα οποία μπορείς να μπεις και να ενημερωθείς. Είναι καθοριστικός ο ρόλος του διαδικτύου. Βοηθάει και στη διαχείριση της κρίσης όλο αυτό, οπότε ενημερώνεσαι και ψάχνεις τον τρόπο για να βοηθηθείς. Τι σας αρέσει περισσότερο σε επίπεδο τηλεοπτικής εμπειρίας; Ε.Κ.: Από την αρχή με την Ιλένια είχαμε πολύ καλή χημεία. Έχει παιδεία, γνώσεις και είναι πολύ ισορροπημένη ως άνθρωπος. Είναι πολύ κοντά σε μένα η εκπομπή, γιατί έχει άμεση σχέση με το επάγγελμά μου. Οπότε ουσιαστικά είμαι εγώ μπροστά σε μία κάμερα. Είχατε άγχος για το αποτέλεσμα; Ε.Κ.: Οχι, δεν το σκέφτομαι με άγχος. Ι.Γ.: Πάντα υπάρχει ένα άγχος στην αρχή, αλλά έχω περάσει από όλα τα στάδια δουλειάς στην τηλεόραση. Ταίριαξα πολύ με την Ειρήνη και ένιωσα κι εγώ πολύ άνετα, απλά είμαι ο εαυτός μου. Τα θέματα που προσεγγίζουμε, τα προσεγγίζουμε η κάθε μία με τον τρόπο της. Ποια είναι τα βασικά προβλήματα για μία σύγχρονη γυναίκα; Ε.Κ.: Εγώ ως μητέρα νομίζω ότι είναι το θέμα του χρόνου με τα παιδιά. Η σύγχρονη μητέρα δεν έχει πολύ χρόνο για τα παιδιά της. Είσαι αναγκασμένη να αφιερώνεις πολύ χρόνο για τα προς το ζην και στερείς από το παιδί σου πολύτιμο χρόνο. Ι.Γ.: Και για μένα, που δεν είμαι μητέρα, το βασικό πρόβλημα είναι ο χρόνος. Κι αυτό γιατί πρέπει να δουλέψεις πολύ για να χτίσεις μία βάση, στην οποία θα στηριχθείς, σε περίπτωση που κάτι προκύψει στο μέλλον. Έχεις την ανάγκη να πατήσεις στα πόδια σου και αναγκάζεσαι να χάσεις πράγματα... Γι’ αυτό και προσπαθούμε απλά να φέρουμε το καλοκαίρι στα σπίτια όσων μας βλέπουν. Θέλουμε να δώσουμε χαρά. Πώς θα μου περιέγραφε η μία την άλλη; Ε.Κ.: Φρέσκο παιδί! Ι.Γ.: Μητέρα!

What were your priorities when deciding on the content of the show? Irini Kolida: This is not a show for women only. Our goal was to get everyone off their couch and outdoors, to help them become more active and pursue a healthier lifestyle. Our topics are geared both to men and to women. Elenia Williams: The best section of the show is the one on sports. We want to entertain our viewers and offer them something pleasant to watch. We don’t want to get them all stressed and worried. Do you think we have completely abandoned our pursuit for a good quality life under the pressure of our daily struggle and the crisis? I.K.: Times are tough and most of us believe that looking after oneself is a luxury. But lately, eating healthy and working out have become part of many people’s life and I think more and more of us have started caring for themselves. E.W.: I think so, too. There are so many media nowadays and accessing information is very easy. The Internet, I believe, has been of paramount importance. This is also helpful in dealing with the crisis. People can get information and look for ways to help themselves. What do you enjoy the most from your experience on television? I.K.: There has always been some really good chemistry between me and Elenia. She’s a well-read, sophisticated and balanced person. This show is right up my alley, as it’s very close to my professional expertise. So, in fact, it’s mainly I in front of a camera. Were you worried about the outcome? I.K.: No, I never felt worried about it. E.W.: There is always a little bit of stress at first but I have been through all the various stages in television work. Irini and I got on really well together so I immediately felt at ease –I knew I could be myself. When presenting a theme, each of us approaches the topic from her own point of view. What are the biggest problems women have to deal with nowadays? I.K.: As a mother, I feel that the most important problem for women today is not spending enough time with their kids. Time is simply not enough for the working mother. Women have to spend a lot of time making a living and they inevitably deprive their children of precious together-time. E.W.: I agree, although I am not a mother. Time is just not enough. You need to put a lot of work in building a base on which you can land on, in case something unpleasant comes up later. You must be able to stand on your own two feet and for that you need to make sacrifices… That’s why we’re simply trying to bring summer into the homes of all those watching our show. We just want to make them happy for a while. How would you describe each other? I.K.: She’s a fresh girl! E.W.: A mother!

Η ποιότητα του ψαριού και η χειροποίητη μαγιονέζα διαφοροποιούσε το αποτέλεσμα, το οποίο, σε κάθε περίπτωση, αφορούσε ένα πιάτο συνυφασμένο με την αστική κουζίνα της εποχής. Το δημοφιλές και γεμάτο αναμνήσεις πιάτο, η Αθηναϊκή σαλάτα, επανασυστήνεται στο Galaxy του Hilton Αθηνών, διατηρώντας την κλασική της υπεροχή και αποκτώντας μια ενδιαφέρουσα ασιατική πινελιά. Ο Bart van de Winkel, γενικός διευθυντής του Hilton Ελλάδας και Κύπρου, παρέλαβε το βραβείο στην επίσημη τελετή, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Αθήνα. / The Hilton Athens was awarded as Greece’s Leading Business Hotel for the fourth consecutive year at the World Travel Awards Europe 2018. Bart van de Winkel, General Manager of Hilton in Greece and Cyprus, received the award at the official ceremony held in Athens.

Ο Manny Harris, παίκτης της ΑΕΚ, βραβεύτηκε ως ο Πολυτιμότερος Παίκτης της σεζόν 2017-18 Basketball Champions League Season, στην τελετή που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο ξενοδοχείο, παρουσία προπονητών, παικτών, δημοσιογράφων και πολλών καλεσμένων. Το βραβείο δόθηκε στον Harris από τον τέσσερις φορές πρωταθλητή του NBA με τους L.A. Archaeological Sites The Odeon Of Herodes Atticus Entrance fee: € 2, Reduced € 1 The odeon is today the main venue for the summer Athens Festival’s performances, under the shadow of the Acropolis and the Athenian stars! It was established in 1661 AD by the magnate Athenian Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife. It was then used as a concert hall.

Pay a visit to the Temple of Hephaestus (460420 BC) and the Stoa of Attalos that used to be the major commercial building of ancient Athens. The Roman Agora Entrance fee: € 2, Reduced € 1 The agora is a unified architectural complex constructed between 19-11 BC, thanks to a donation from Julius and Augustus. It was used as the main commercial market during the Roman Times. North of the complex is Hadrian’s library (a rectangular building), built in 132 AD. During the Byzantine period and the Turkish occupation the area was covered with houses, workshops and churches, along with the Fethiye Mosque. Temple of Olympian Zeus Entrance fee: € 2, Reduced € 1 The temple is one of the largest temples in antiquity (6th century BC), with 15 of its 104 columns still standing. According to the traveler Pausanias, it was built by Deucalion, a mythical ancestor of Greeks. Several attempts to built the temple were made until it took its final form in 31 BC by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The Archaeological Site of Sounio Entrance fee: € 4, Reduced € 2 The Temple of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea, dominates the southernmost tip of Attica, where the horizon meets the Aegean Sea. Perched on the craggy rocks of Cape Sounio, the temple is one of the most impressive ancient temples in Greece, enveloped in myth and history from antiquity until the present day. The unknown architect is probably the same one who built the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora of Athens.
