Delighting in our physical presence, they may begin to purr and perhaps roll on their backs, exposing their vulnerability. As if to say, “I trust you. Give me some love and make me feel good.” Their gift to us is that they receive us deeply, without any troubling cognitions or disturbing memories of less savory moments, such as when we forgot to feed them or clean their litter box. They let all of that go. They’re just here with us right now.

here’s untold thousands of cat things out in the world, available for your browsing and purchasing pleasure. In the interest of trimming some fat, here is my lean, mean, no-bullshit core team of Most Valuable Players Cat Things, that over the years have proved their mettle and continue to be invaluable in my daily cat wrangling adventures.

You humans can’t seem to stop snapping pix with your phones when you’re around us, but you resort to sneaky tactics like waving around fun toys to get our attention but dropping them as soon as we turn around. This is cruel. If we cats are willing to let you capture us on film, the least you can do is provide us with a bit of play time in exchange—or let a cartoon cat amuse you instead. There is one thing that you don’t have to worry about when it comes to photography: Camera flashes do not harm cats’ eyes.

Why you love

s t a C By John Amodeo, PhD, pcychologist

One reason we may love to stroke these adorable creatures is because the rhythmic action of stroking their velvety fur feels good. It focuses our attention, as happens in meditation. But I’m convinced there’s more to it than that. I believe that a major reason we love cats is because of an uncanny ability that few humans possess: they register our tactile presence in a deeply felt way. They really know how to let us in! They’re right there in the delectable moment receiving our touch.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAT SUPERMODEL

Q A

What are animal agents looking for when recruiting?

Q A Q A

You humans can’t seem to stop snapping pix with your phones when you’re around us, but you resort to sneaky tactics like waving around fun toys to get our attention but dropping them as soon as we turn around. This is cruel. If we cats are willing to let you capture us on film, the least you can do is provide us with a bit of play time in exchange—or let a cartoon cat amuse you instead. There is one thing that you don’t have to worry about when it comes to photography: Camera flashes do not harm cats’ eyes.

What are animal agents looking for when recruiting? Do you have a new kitten? Is your household cat something special? Are they more of a dog than a cat? Have you ever thought that your cat is so cute that they could be the face of the new cat food product as a cat mode or cat actor? Well, here’s how to go about making that dream a reality!

How much training does my cat need? Not all briefs with require your cat to perform skills, sometimes they just want the cat to behave naturally. Despite this, that doesn’t mean that it will be smooth running and easy, your cat still needs to be happy in new environments with busy, noisy locations.

Q A Q A Q A

My cat is second generation pedigree; King Mufasa is his daddy and his mummy has royal pedigree… In honesty, this doesn’t matter. While it’s amazing that your cat has a wonderful heritage – that isn’t what’s important to us. You may be surprised to hear that it’s actually moggies who get the most work; about a 70% / 30% split.

Do cat models make good money? In honesty, this doesn’t matter. While it’s amazing that your cat has a wonderful heritage – that isn’t what’s important to us. You may be surprised to hear that it’s actually moggies who get the most work; about a 70% / 30% split.

Most importantly… Agents want to work with cats who are happy, confident and feel secure, in other words – Bombproof cats. This means cats that are happy travelling in the car, happy seeing new sights and happy being around strangers. In fact, some cats are simply in their element when they’re showing off. If you feel that your cat is more likely to hide under a sofa or run up a chimney, maybe this isn’t for them. Our priority is the welfare of animals and unnecessary stress is something that we definitely avoid.

While there is no shortage of niche calendar celebrations, National Cat Day on Sunday, October 29, 2017, is an occasion particularly near and dear to fashion folks. From Karl Lagerfeld to Miuccia Prada and even Gucci's Alessandro Michele, the runway is replete with feline fanatics, who have featured their favorite household pets in their collections. Leopard spots and tiger stripes are mainstays on the catwalks, but you'd be surprised by how many designers have shown literal cat prints over the years.

Besides just entertaining their owners with their incredible motions and funny positions, cats are also perfectly capable of posing for some beautiful portraits. So we’ll show you some basic tips for photographing these teatime tigers as effectively as possible. What’s the best kind of camera to use? The one you have at hand. You can photograph your cats with a phone, or with a compact, or even a DSLR if it’s around. (Actually, to get the very best photos, using a DSLR, along with fixed lenses that have speeds in the f/1.4 to f/2.8 range, is a good choice; these lenses will let you blur the cat’s background.)

Pumpkin Bacon & Flax Dog Biscuits + Tuna & Cheddar Cat Crisps Start to finish : 2 hr 30 min Ingredients PUMPKIN BACON & FLAX DOG BISCUITS 1 and 1/2 cups oat flour 2 tablespoons flax 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup pureed pumpkin 2 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 strips bacon fried and broken into roughly 1/4 inch square pieces TUNA & CHEDDAR CAT CRISPS 12 ounces tuna canned in water & drained 1 egg 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped 1 and 3/4 cups oat flour

1.

1. To make the dog biscuits, mix together the flour, flax, and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl until well blended. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin, water, and olive oil until smooth. Add the flour mixture and bacon bits and stir until just blended. 2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take about 1 tablespoon of the dough and roll it into a ball in your hands. Press it flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper so that it is about 1/2 inch thick. Take your pinky finger and press into the center of the biscuit to create the base of the paw, then use a pen cap to gently indent three circles at the top of the biscuit to make the toes. 3. Repeat this process until you have used all of the dough. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 25 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven and allow to cool completely before giving your pup a treat. These will keep in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. 4. To make the cat crisps, puree the tuna, egg, and vegetable oil in a blender or food processor until a relatively smooth paste forms. Stir in the cheddar and parsley until they're evenly distributed throughout the mixture, then add the oat flour and mix until it is just blended. 5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into 1-inch wide strips, and then cut the strips into 1-inch squares. Place each square on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat this process until you have used up all of the dough. 6. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Allow the treats to cool completely before removing them form the pan and giving them to your kitty. These will keep in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.

Rabbit stew

19

Rabbit Stew Start to finish : 2 hr 30 min Ingredients 1/2 lb Rabbit meat 1 tsp olive oil A dash of parsley, thyme, rosemary, and marjoram Unsalted vegetable stock 20 grams sweet potato, carrot, celery, and peas INSTRUCTIONS 1. Bake (at 350 degrees) the chicken/turkey thighs and liver leaving ~50% of the thigh meat raw. (The time needed

4. 5. 6. 7.

varies depending on how thick the thighs are but is usually ~15 minutes, give or take.) The liver will be cooked more than the meat which is fine. Remove from the oven and put in cold water to stop the cooking process. Remove some of the raw meat from the bone for chunking (for the version in the picture, I used a grinder, if you use meat shears or a knife to "chunk" the meat - cutting it into small pieces about the size of a dime, it will look like the second picture). The bigger, the better. Keep in mind that raw meat is more tenacious (and better for teeth) than cooked meat. Make sure that you include the skin and all the fat! If using eggs, make sure you cook the whites (the yolks can be cooked or left raw). Break the egg into small pieces so that it incorporates into the rest of the ingredients. Mix together the meat/liver/skin, egg whites, and fat drippings in one large bowl. Placed mixture in the refrigerator while the supplements are mixed up. Combine the water, egg yolks (if you only cooked the white versus the whole egg), vitamin E, vitamin B-complex, taurine, salt, bone meal, and fish oil with a whisk. Note that it is helpful to put the fish oil capsules in warm water in advance of mixing up the supplement slurry. It takes about 15 minutes for them to dissolve and I use my hand to make sure that all of the oil is squeezed out of each capsule. Some people poke the fish oil capsules with a pin. It is ok to leave the capsules in the water. Most cats readily eat them but if your cat is not fond of fish, then you may want to remove them. Pour the supplement slurry into the meat/skin/liver/egg mixture. Mix very well. Portion into containers and freeze. Leave at least 3/4" of head space to allow for expansion. Ideally, the food should only be in the refrigerator (in a completely thawed state) for 48 - 72 hours so keep that in mind when choosing your container size. The average cat eats about 3.5-6 ounces per day.
