WHY DOES THE TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING MODEL NOT WORK TODAY? “In his classic 1968 study of daily life in classrooms, Philip W. Jackson wrote that students spend as much as 50 percent of their time waiting for
something to happen”
More than a quarter of U.S. students (more than 1.2 million) do not graduate high school in 4 years and for African American and Latino students that number approaches 40%
“Our schools are not failing,
as many claim; rather, they are obsolete. We continue to
focus far too much time on teaching and testing content knowledge that can be retrieved from the Internet as needed. Knowledge has become a free commodity, like air, so the world no longer cares how much our students know. What the world cares about – what matters most- is what our students can do with what they know.” – Tony Wagner

SCHOOL GOALS & VISION: ENGAGE: Scheduling “flex time throughout the day to encourage collaboration & planning of personal projects with real-life experiences
EMPOWER: Creating a community of learners and critical thinkers that will transform into future entrepreneurs and leaders by focusing on the special needs of the individual student
REACH: Encourage self-directed learning by developing student-teacher trust with high expectations and student driven mentorship
INSPIRE: Outdoor and indoor classrooms with a building that offers a flexible learning environment that
will keep students engaged and motivated

WHAT IS A MAKER-SPACE?
MAKER-SPACES
MAKER-SPACES “A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. - Andrew Miller
We want each of our maker-spaces to house the various grade levels and provide a place for each student to have their own space to work. Whether they are working on homework for their individual classes or on their projects, we want our students to feel like they have a sense of ownership and belonging in their maker-spaces.

Geothermal technology is one of the most reliable energy sources on the planet, because it uses the earth’s natural constant temperature to its advantage. Geothermal is useful in both heating and cooling. There is little cost fluctuation and the cost remains very stable year round. Geothermal is compatible with a variety of mechanical systems which can be helpful when using multiple systems. When using vertical geothermal loops, the building’s footprint remains small. Geothermal is available anywhere, and its resource (the earth’s temperature) will not deplete making it a renewable resource.

Why Variable Air Volume?
Like geothermal, radiant flooring can be used for both heating and cooling. We wanted to utilize radiant flooring because of its thermal comfort advantages. Many users prefer radiant flooring because it adjusts the temperature change on their level, because it takes advantage of natural air displacement. Although radiant flooring may be less cost effective initially, we can downsize some of the forced air duct work because the radiant flooring is doing most of the work. It is a very quiet system and, in relation to many systems, it minimizes system maintenance and visual obtrusiveness. Unfortunately, radiant flooring is not quick to adjust to temperature adjustments and does not provide any dehumidification or air quality assistance. However, radiant flooring is compatible with many other mechanical systems and will pair well with our VAV system.

Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems are very common systems that are easy to install and repair because contractors and facilities managers are familiar with the systems. When using VAV to go to multiple floors, there are safety concerns because fire and smoke can travel through the ducts, however this can easily be managed by the use of dampers at every level change. VAV allows the user to minimize operating costs and maximize both the control of air quality and the velocity of air. Because our radiant flooring does not adjust to temperature control quickly, this system can aid the radiant flooring by making the temperature adjustments more quickly. VAV also allows for the user to manually control the temperature in different zones and rooms as needed. The VAV also works well with our open web joist structure.
