t the beginning of this year I remember saying, “I’m taking this publication to the next level, and I’m going to reach my goal by mid-year, and I’ll take a well deserved time off after three years of hard work because, according to my planning, everything will be able to take care of itself by then.”

Well, things didn’t exactly turn out the way I imagined. Life has its way of changing all your plans. The unexpected will happen, and everything can go in a totally different direction. But I’ve learned that, as long as there is a vision, there will always be a mission--no matter what comes my way. I have always been someone that sees everything from its good side. I always believe that there is a message behind every situation.

Life will prepare us for the bigger picture, and there will always be a bigger picture.

If listen carefully to its message, we will be able to move successfully to the next level. Keeping your vision in sight, minus the expectations, will help to make unforeseen situations easier to deal with. Christine Mc Gregor, Life Coach at TDC, gives us a perfect view on how we often live expecting so much and how we can avoid disappointments because things often don’t go as planned.

As we love to put emphasis on the power of “GIRLS,” we hand-picked five ladies for this issue that are on top of their game and know how to get a job done well! I personally admire all these ladies.

They are now on my “favorite people” list. Down-to-earth, smart, outgoing, beautiful, fun, and hardworking are just a few of the adjectives that describe the women on our cover--Sharalee Lint-Beudeker, Erica Fortuno, Gloria Morales--and inside our pages-Grisha Maarten and Saskia Fung Loij.

These super women are all marketing executives with a successful career and offer a perfect example of doing the work you love.

Men can’t be left behind, especially if it’s one whose passion is the art of cooking-Dino Jagtiani of Rare and Temptation.

Just mentioning it makes my mouth water. I’m longing for the delicious ravioli Jagtiani prepared for his guests at his dinner party. This is cooking at its best, and you’ll get to try to make some of these dishes yourself, as he was generous enough to provide us the recipes. Now let’s talk about Chet!

Another man with a different story; he is out there.--out ‘n’ about, that is. We all know him, but not really. Alita Singh gets more in-depth with Chet and gives us a different picture than what we normally see.

LIZA-JAYNE JEWELRY Liza Lentini of Liza-Jayne Jewelry has been crafting beautiful bijou almost as long as she’s been a beachcomber.

Reared on the cool, rocky shores of Massachusetts, Lentini, the daughter of a metalsmith, began making jewelry at age nine.

he outpatient process, which is performed with a small cannula, offers its patients the option of semi-permanent effects, using PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), or temporary, using a host of options ranging from collagen to the patient’s own body fat. And thanks to the new DermaSculpt microcannula, the world of injectable fillers has recently taken a turn for the better.

Since it was recently introduced to the American market by Cosmofrance Inc., the FDA-approved DermaSculpt has taken off like a shot. In this case, smaller is better. Previous efforts to reduce swelling and bruising included topical numbing creams and ice skin cooling, though none could completely achieve the desired effects of DermaSculpt’s “Ouchless Needle”. Not a needle at all, but rather an injectable device, DermaSculpt’s flexible, blunt-tip microcannula, allows for literally no pain or bruising, and the allimportant risk for blood vessel rupture is vastly reduced. Less swelling could possibly increase the longevity of the filler’s results. Best yet, there’s no anesthesia required of any kind.

Susan Weinkle, M.D., an affiliate clinical professor at the University of South Florida, had these raves about blunttip cannulas in a recent interview with modernmedicine.com. “Blunt-tip cannulas are revolutionary in that they cause much less bruising, which directly translates to less or no downtime. My aesthetic patients often desire a ‘quick fix’, and novel blunt-tip cannulas can help me perform atraumatic treatments with the least downtime possible, more so than with traditional needles.” As Dr. Weinkle explains, the benefits of reduced bruising isn’t to be underestimated. Patients seeking fillers may be looking for improvements ASAP, but they’re not interested in taking time out of their social schedule to heal. Less bruising also

helps to preserve the hush-hush factor so many find essential when seeking cosmetic enhancement.

California-based oculofacial plastic surgeon Dr. Kimberly Cockerham M.D. has been performing fillers for 20 years, and was very excited to integrate the DermaSculpt cannula into her practice.

“The most feared complication for fillers is when the product enters a blood vessel and causes a blockage of blood flow to the skin, resulting in necrosis (a.k.a. the skin blackens and falls off),” Dr. Cockerham explains. “With a cannula the risk of this complication is eliminated. Also, the patient has less bruising.”

However, the ultimate success of DermaSculpt may depend on the doctor’s ability to adapt to its unique differences.

Through DermaSculpt’s trademarked Skin Sculpting Technique (SST), DermaSculpt claims doctors can “literally slide the DermaSculpt Microcannula under the patient’s skin”, but the flexibility of the cannula can potentially provide a challenge achieving the target area.

While blunt-tip cannulas are excellent for lip augmentation (i.e. plumping) they’re not recommended for reducing finer lip lines surrounding the mouth. “Dermal fillers…can be used to treat scars, eyelid malposition, as a tissue expander and for post-traumatic or surgical problems,” says Dr. Cockerham. To keep their doctors updated, DermaSculpt offers training courses and symposiums all over the world.

Though it’s thought of as one of plastic surgery’s less invasive procedures, it’s important to be reminded that injectable fillers is not without its risks. Permanence may seem like a cost effective option, but not when the outcome is a surgical mistake. While complications for injectable fillers are thought to be low, there is always a possibility. Unfortunate cases include volumizing of

the skin which resulted in abscess formation or ulceration. An uneven, unattractive result is unfortunately always a possibility. Most complications can be cured with further surgery. Dr. Ashraf Hamdan, a plastic surgeon in Beirut, Lebanon, affirmed in an interview on modernmedicine.com that, though rare, he has witnessed such filler-related disasters. “Interestingly enough, I saw these types of complications very rarely when I had a practice in North Florida….

The situation was different outside of the U.S., but even in countries where a variety of permanent fillers were being used for cosmetic purposes, physicians shield away from them once they become aware of the possibly late complications.” He notes that many patients are taken advantage of because they are ignorant of the risks.

Unfortunately, there is no telling how a patient’s body will react to injectable fillers until the procedure is already performed. However, patients can start the surgical process on the best foot by fully researching their physician. Dr. Kimberly Cockerham has some wise words of advice: “When choosing a treating physician choose a board certified ophthalmologist, otolaryngologist dermatologist or general surgeon who has completed a facial plastics fellowship with at least five years of experience since completing training.” Be sure that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), or, in the case of facial surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology. Do not let a surgeon’s office make excuses for their lack of certification. And please, do not let anyone who isn’t a doctor inject anything into your body. The risk isn’t worth the savings. “If the deal sounds too good to be true…it is!” says Dr. Cockerham. “Beware of the use of ‘fake’ products. Horrible outcomes have been reported when rogue nurses or aestheticians pretend to be experts.”

Christmas cookies, Christmas cakes, turkey with all the trimmings… Sometimes it seems the real holiday spirit lies in the calories we consume. It’s understandable that, by the time the stockings are hung by the chimney with care, you feel you deserve a treat or two. Why, then, do those few extra pounds always seem to sneak up on you the minute you ring in the New Year? Here’s your opportunity to break the cycle. Ohio-based nutrition guru Barrie Rosencrans offers Pure readers sensible solutions for enjoying holiday meals with very little post-holiday regret.

1. Why do people gain so much weight over the holidays?

“Research studies show that the average person gains three to five pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s,” Rosencrans reports. The clinical reason? “It’s primarily a result of an increase in calories and a decrease in exercise.” All that hustle and bustle forces us to re-work our priorities, often placing fitness at the bottom of the list. It seems harmless enough at the time, but these small efforts (or, in this case, lack thereof) add up in all the worst ways. Up late at the office holiday party the night before, we miss that morning trip to the gym.

Since we’re running late, we take a cab, instead of walking, in order to save time.

“With an overabundance of things to accomplish during the holiday season, people often have less time on their hands to focus on themselves and to take time out to exercise,” says Rosencrans. So, here we are-decreasing exercise and increasing calories.

It’s the simple mathematics of dietary disaster.

Helpful Holiday Hint: Write down five easy ways to incorporate exercise into the holiday madness. Walk instead of ride, opt to take the stairs, bring a portion-controlled lunch from home, or pack sugar-free alternatives on party day--for you and your kids.

2. What are the greatest caloric pitfalls people don’t think about (besides the cookies and obvious fatty foods)?

Sugars of all kinds can hurt us more than we realize, especially those found in alcohol. While cookies and cakes are clearly culprits, it’s the sneaky liquid calories that really get us in the end. According to Rosencrans, “In addition to being less active, people tend to increase their alcohol intake during the holiday season, thus piling on extra calories through wine, beer and mixed drinks. A three-ounce glass of wine has about 90 calories, and a threeounce mixed drink has about 120 calories.

When we drink, we also tend to lower our inhibition about eating foods that we may

not normally gravitate towards.” Admit it. Food you wouldn’t dream of consuming before a few drinks looks irresistible as the night goes on. Apparently, beer goggling also applies to bundt cake. Worse yet, the nature of those calories consumed at holiday time aren’t the same as those at any other time of year. “The fact that they are empty calories means they tend to be low in vitamins and minerals, low in fiber, high in simple sugars and fat. They are not really food that would make up the component of the meal, hence wind up being excess calories that add to poundage pileups and weight gain,” Rosencrans says.

Helpful Holiday Hint: Keep a food diary. To demolish the tedium of writing things down and avoid having to announce to everyone at the festivities that you’re the resident kill joy, take photos with your phone’s camera of everything you consume outside your house. You know what they say: the camera doesn’t lie.

3. What can people add to their diet, since it’s so tough to take things away at holiday time?

One of Rosencrans’s most successful techniques involves redefining your approach to dieting. She advises adding fiber rich foods-fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains—to your existing meal. Why? “They fill you up and keep you satisfied. They give you the healthy nutritious and delicious boost to your day to get you through tough times of shopping, preparing and getting ready for the holidays,” Rosencrans explains.

Helpful Holiday Hint: Take the time to shop right at the beginning of the week. Treat you and your party guests to some highfiber guacamole with fresh avocado, or a beautiful hummus made with fiber-rich chickpeas.

4. What are some low cal/low fat options hosts could serve at parties that don’t take away any of the holiday happiness?

Combine the aforementioned fiber-rich dips with crudité platters compiled with healthy

carrots, broccoli, and fresh peppers. Fresh fruit is more fun on a skewer. Try apples, bananas, oranges, kiwi, guava, and berries of all kinds for a colorful, fiber-packed treat. Don’t overlook dried fruits: figs, raisins, apricots. They’re loaded with vitamins. For your main course, why not serve steamed or baked fish with some broiled vegetables?

Helpful Holiday Hint: Treat your guests to a delicious alcohol-free fruit smoothie, complete with festive umbrella and fruit garnish. It’s a healthy holiday alternative no one can resist.

5. Is there just a little bit of exercise you could recommend which would make all the difference?

If you approach the holiday bulge-busting like a military operation, it’ll only make the experience that much more daunting.

Instead, hold fast to the truism that little things mean a lot – to your waistline. Start your day off with a yoga class, take a walk on your lunch break, or take the dog out after dinner for an extra walk around the block. Rosencrans breaks down how surprisingly easy it is to lose weight, any time of year, by eliminating a few extra calories a day, however it works for you. “3,500 calories equals one pound [of weight]. Divide that by the seven days of the week. You can focus on cutting back 250 calories of excess food and treats and/or exercise off 250 calories to see a slow and steady weight loss plan.” Start reading labels. How many calories in that Frappuccino/Doughnut/ Egg roll? Once you start looking, you’ll see it’s easy to eliminate. It’s nice to be reminded that little things can make a difference in the right way, too.

Helpful Holiday Hint: Give the gift that keeps on giving. Why not give yourself the gift of heart health through Tai Chi classes or a new bike? Maybe you won’t go to the gym every day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t commit to daily exercise year-round – your way. Remember, in the end, it’s not about your weight; it’s about staying healthy to enjoy many more holidays to come. PLM

Excitement grows as the event grows in our minds. It seems the sky is the limit and feelings of love and harmony grow side-by-side with the advent calendar that the children open on a daily basis.

At last the time has come. Dressed in our finery we attend Christmas service and re-live the magic as we

With an intense look the chef concentrates on his task, a dinner in Holiday spirit that he is making for a group of close friends and associates. A sprig here and a twist there, as the taste creator takes command in his kitchen it is clear he is a perfectionist, and an innovator. This master is visibly at the peak of his game. Meet top chef Dino Jagtiani.

upscale Waldorf hotel, where according to his restaurant website, “he really learned to cook.” “But I had a dream,” says Jagtiani as we sit in Temptation’s parlor, “I wanted to go back home to my friends and family on St. Maarten and open up my own restaurant.” That restaurant became Temptation.

The master cook laughs and says: “We were having dinner with family and friends and I was struggling to find a good name for the restaurant when the waiter brought a basket of bread rolls, and someone said: ‘take it away, it is too much temptation’, and I thought ‘Bingo!’”

he St. Maarten born and bred graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York owns two of the island’s best restaurants; Temptation and Rare. Temptation has been open for ten years and in that time Jagtiani’s fame has spread all across the world. Temptation has been nominated as restaurant of the year by the Gault Millau Guide for three consecutive years. In 2005 Bon Appetit Magazine called Temptation “one of the top ten new restaurants in the Caribbean.” The 36-year-old food artist won a gold medal at the Taste of Caribbean competition in Miami, twice, and he has also been featured in National Geographic Traveler, Caribbean Travel and Life, Islands, American Way, and Hemispheres magazines, as well as The Miami Herald, and Washington Times newspapers.

Though this recognition makes him quite the celebrity, Jagtiani remains down-toearth. Talking with him feels more like talking with a good friend. He is funny, friendly and pensive. As he stares at the table arrangement in front of him, Jagtiani smiles reminiscing about leaving his sunny isle for Manhattan’s skyline: “I saw snow for the first time and realized what being ‘sharp on time’ really meant.” The island boy quickly caught up with city pace and once he graduated, left New York for London and the

‘Nouveau Caribbean’ is what Jagtiani calls his kitchen. “We use French techniques, such as broiling, grilling, poaching and sautéing and add our own Caribbean cooking varieties.” Most importantly every plate has to be perfectly balanced according to the entrepreneur. “I am talking about my dishes being sweet and sour, hot and cold, bitter and salty, crunchy and soft at the same time. Think of a hamburger. A hamburger has everything, it has all those ingredients: the soft roll, the salty meat, the sweet onions or relish, the crunchy lettuce, and millions of people love it.”

“I truly enjoy what I do, and I am passionate about cooking,” explains Jagtiani when asked what his secret to success is. “I knew I wanted to be chef since I was about seven years old and I remember playing in the kitchen of my mom and being fascinated by all the pots and pans. I just like to make others happy, and I think a good chef does just that. I also think chefs make great husbands (laughs). There is a lot of love there that comes from within.”

To make it in the restaurant business you need to be committed and disciplined. “That is hard sometimes, occasionally I doubt my own business mind but I believe that as long as you take care of the operation, it will take care of itself.” A consistent quality is a key success ingredient, bad economy or not, and that

Have the flour, eggs, bread crumbs set aside in 3 separate containers, and then follow standard breading procedure. First dip the balls in flour, then eggs, then panko.

When read to serve deep fry the balls in 350F oil for 1 minute until golden brown.

RED WINE POACHED PEARS 2 each pears: peeled and cut into 6 wedges ½ btl red wine ½ cup sugar ½ cup honey 1 each cinnamon stick 1 each orange

(removed the peel, then juice) ½ cup balsamic vinegar 5 each star anise 2 stems fresh rosemary (save few pieces for garnish)

Place all ingredients in a pot, bring to boil, then lower the fire to simmer, and poach the pears until fork tender. Remove pears, and let sauce reduce until the consistency of syrup.

Serve goat cheese in small bowl, and place 2 slices of pears in the center. Drizzle some of the syrup on the plate, and garnish with rosemary spring.

From freshly caught mahi-mahi, tuna and red snapper to home grown arugula, tarragon and basil, the delicate taste and unfailing excellence of Temptation is what makes every customer want more.

with walnut cream and truffle oil

Serves 6 Filling: 1 each butternut squash peeled, medium diced 1 TBS butter, 1 cup ricotta cheese ¼ cup grated parmigiano cheese (good quality) 2 tbs fresh thyme picked from stems ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 18 each wonton skins as needed salt, pepper, sugar, eggs, cornmeal Prepare the filling : place butternut squash in a roasting pan with just a few drops of water, and butter so the squash and steam and roast at the same time. Cover with foil, and place in 375F oven for approx 20 -30 mins until fork tender. You can leave the pan uncovered for the last 5 minutes but be careful and do not let the squash burn. Allow the squash mixture to cool. Then mash mixture with a fork. This mixture should be the consistency of mash potatoes. Then fold in the ricotta cheese, and add the parmigiano, and seasonings.

Set mixture aside. You will have extra filling to use for another dish or more ravioli. Lay out the wonton skins and spoon approx 1 tsp of filling in the center of the each skin. Brush all 4 sides very lightly with egg wash, and then fold each ravioli in half, to form a triangle shape,and squeeze the edges tightly to seal. Sprinkling some cornmeal on a sheet tray and rest the raviolis on top and refrigerate until ready to use.

Walnut cream 2 cups heavy cream, ½ cup chicken broth 1 cup toasted walnuts plus ¼ cup extra for garnish, ½ cup parsley 1 garlic clove, salt and pepper as needed Place all ingredients to boil, and then blend. Set aside until ready to serve. To serve. Boil the ravioli in lightly salted water for 2 minutes. Heat the walnut cream sauce in a pan and then toss the ravioli in the sauce pan, serve 3 per person, in a nice pasta bowl, and garnish with fresh basil, parmigiano, some crushed walnuts, and truffle oil.

It is traditional and original, truly amazing.” “Yes,” agrees personal trainer Catalina Ahlip-Georgescu who is seated next to Michael: “The food is sophisticated and yet traditional. It is a very refined taste and having dinner at Temptation feels like a banquet in a castle.” The seasonal menu that will be served aside the regular menu during the Holiday season consists of many traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas ingredients. Think of turkey and pumpkin, cranberries and chestnuts, mushrooms and pears served just so, voila, it is taste bud Walhalla!

“Dino is a friend and a colleague,” says restaurateur Leslie Martina whilst enjoying the second course of the holiday menu, butternut squash ravioli with walnut cream and truffle oil, “he inspires me, the combination of flavours

For an eleven year old Destiny has got an amazing palette. “My favorite dish on Temptation’s menu is the rare spicy tuna roll, and I loved the soy-ginger roasted turkey drumstick with wild mushroom bread pudding and cranberry-apple chutney,” she says and smiles sweetly.

Destiny’s beloved turkey dish was followed by string beans with toasted almonds and a dessert of pumpkin panna cotta with berries and churros.

The dinner party guests collectively exclaimed that the food was divine, and could not agree on a favorite among the five course menu. Summed up by dinner guest and physical therapist Timothy Ahlip: “The turkey, the bread pudding, the goat cheese, the dessert, they are all exquisite!”

Soy-ginger roasted turkey drumstick with wild mushroom bread pudding Serves 6 3 each turkey drum sticks 1 gallon chicken broth 3 cups soy sauce 1 cup sugar

Place all ingredients in a roasting pan, and braise the turkey legs approx 2 hours until meat is falling off the bone. You can either the serve the drumsticks whole, or pick the meat off the bone and let the meat sit in the braising juices.

1 packet stuffing mix 3 cups heavy cream ½ lbs cream cheese 6 large egg yolks ½ lbs assorted mushrooms sliced and sautéed with some garlic and butter.

Bring heavy cream and cream cheese to a simmer. Just barely heated enough to melt the cream cheese. Add slowly to the egg yolks to make a custard mixture. Add the stuffing mixture, mushrooms, and seasonings to this. Place in individual ramekins,sprinkle parmgiano on top and bake in 300F oven for approx 20 mins until pudding is set and top has a nice crust.

Pumpkin panna cotta with cranberries and churros

Serves 6 2 cups heavy cream ½ cup pumpkin peeled and small diced ¾ cup sugar

as needed cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mace.

3 gelatin sheets soaking in ice water

Bring all heavy cream, pumpkin, sugar, spices to boil, simmer 5 minutes until pumpkin is cooked. Transfer to blender, and puree. Strain this mixture, set aside. Make sure it is still hot. Then squeeze as much water from the gelatin sheets as possible and melt the gelatin sheets into the cream mixture. Pour mixture into serving glasses. Either wine, or martini glass. Place in the fridge to set approx 6 hours.

Cranberry relish 1 packet fresh or frozen cranberries 1 granny smith apple small diced

½ cup freshly squeezed OJ ½ cup balsamic ½ cup sugar ½ cup honey

Place all ingredients in a pan and cook until cranberries are starting to pop. You can serve this warm or cold.

String beans with toasted almonds

Serves 6 ½ lb haricoverts (blanched) as needed olive oil, butter 1 tbs shallots (minced) 1 tbs honey 1 tsp vinegar as needed salt and pepper, sliced almonds toasted

Place a saute pan on high heat, add the olive oil, butter, shallots and saute until starting to caramelize, add honey, and vinegar, then add haricoverts, and toss until warmed through.

Season with salt, pepper, and sprinkle the toasted almonds on top. Serve this as a side dish to many holiday meals.

Churros 1 cup AP flour 3 Eggs 1/2 tsp Cinnamon 3/4 Stick butter

1 cup Water 1 pinch Salt 1 cup cinnamon Sugar as needed Corn oil

Bring water to a boil. Add butter and salt. Add flour & remove from heat. Beat with a fork until well-mixed.

Beat in the eggs and cinnamon. Put the mixture into a pastry bag. Heat about an inch of oil in a pan, or use a deep fryer, to about 350F. Squeeze the mixture into the oil, making the churros about 7” long. Cook 3-5 at a time, depending on how large your skillet or pan is until they are a nice golden color, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towels. Transfer to another dish, sprinkle cinnamon sugar over them, and serve immediately. Makes about 12.

To Serve spoon a little cranberry relish on top of the panna cotta and garnish with a churro.

West Indian is the debut album of Patrick Grayham.

Grayham has been influenced by the best of all worlds. He was born in Suriname and raised on the islands of Curacao and St. Maarten. He currently resides in The Netherlands.

You will definitely hear the mix of cultures in his music. The song “Fire” is literally one to set the dance floor on fire and is a zoukbased song. He also collaborates with different artists on his album, two of whom are members of the popular band Orange Grove. His collaboration with these two other musicians on the song “Island Cry” leads to a beautiful melting pot of reggae and sweet melodies.

Pink House brings the funk! by

Pink House was born in an old Creole house in the heart of Colombier some three years ago. The band, pulled together by Alban Charton from the South of France, offers a distinct sound; an echo of the past that resonates in all music lovers – the joy of funk.

P

ink House’s distinctive name, which evokes interest and curiosity from all who hear it, was adopted from the band’s regular rehearsal space – Alban’s picturesque pink house with its gingerbread trim. “The name just stuck,” said Alban, Pink House’s guitarist and manager.

Pink House’s name story has some similarity with that of the famous contemporary country group – Lady Antebellum, which is also named after the Antebellum houses native to that group’s home in the Southern United States. Like Lady Antebellum, Pink House’s name draws a crowd eager for music and a glimpse into the enigma of the title.

Pink House bassist John Hannibal sees the band’s name as a prelude to its outstanding delivery of funk classics. “Funk is tasty music, and the band’s name generates interest without giving away our sound.”

Hannibal, like the rest of Pink House, is a

very versatile musician and came to the band purely for the joy that funk delivers.

Alban, a jazz lover with a heart for funk, wanted to play more jazz music when he moved to St. Martin some seven years ago.

Jazz proved a difficult genre to push in the tropical Caribbean setting, where party music and fun in the sun were more overpowering than the bluesy ambiance needed for jazz.

Why the complex groove of funk and not another genre? Alban explains it this way: “People love to dance. And funk gets everyone moving.” Funk’s earthy beat strikes a chord in all who hear it; it calls them to move, sway, and delve into its deliciousness.

So funk it was, and funk it stayed with Alban. He rallied his fellow musicians to rock out to the jives of Earth, Wind and Fire, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and they added a a side of Al Green with a dash of the late, great Bob Marley. Also in the flushes of funk fever are fellow band members Hannibal,

Bruce Jackson, drummer, and lead vocalist Kenneth Hall.

To date, Pink House has recorded two demo albums with covers of famous funk hits from the social revolution of the 1960s and ‘70s – “A Long Walk” (Jill Scott), Al Green’s version of “Ain’t No Sunshine” (Al Green), “Brick House” (The Commodores), “Get Up, Stand Up” (Bob Marley), “I Wish” (Stevie Wonder), “On Broadway” (George Benson), “Play That Funky Music , White Boy” (Wild Cherry), and “Superstar” (Jamelia).

Aside from the regular band members, the demo also features singer Nathalie Jacaria, Manu on keyboards, and now ex-Pink House drummer Greg Charton.

Pink House will soon move away from covers and inject some of their own creativity and ingenuity into their repertoire. Alban, together with the rest of the quartet, is looking to the future with an eye on playing original compositions blended with classic funk.

Alban, a music teacher who gives a wide variety of classes on the French side, is hard at work composing Pink House’s first album.

The group will storm the recording studio as soon as all the notes and clefs are in the right places.

Since coming into being, Pink House has seen some band members head off onto different paths. Those changes were not due to the traditional bad breakups or angry partings.

St. Martin is often a place where people live out their dreams and then move on. Each past member has left behind some of their essence and strength in Pink House: their love for music, energy and penchant for fun.

The band continues to belt out the rhythmic and danceable chords of funk thanks to the “quite small” music world on the island. “You know everybody in the music world,” said Alban, and with that insight it was easy to replace his drummer brother, Greg, when he recently left to pursue other endeavours.

This created room for Jackson, a New Yorker, now St. Martin transplant.

Pink House brings the funk every Friday at the Dinghy Dock in Oyster Pond. Chet Euton is a fixture on the island’s party scene. He is known as a manly model, promoter and a man about town. Here he talks about the importance of being true to self, freedom, style, and making the most of life in the paradise he loves.

het Euton smiled when I asked him if he wanted coffee, or perhaps breakfast, as I joined him at Chesterfield’s one Saturday morning. He quickly declined, indicating that a night on the town had only ended a few hours ago, and lemonade was just the ticket to soothe the night’s errors away.

Chet seems to be living up to his ubiquitous image of the man about town, a party guy, but this quickly changed as we launched into stories about his years growing up in New York with regular vis-

its to the paradise of St. Maarten, his selfproclaimed nerd status, and his longing for a daughter to balance off sons Joshua David and Jonah Gabriel. Chet’s ties to St. Maarten are through his mother, who was born on the French side. She and his father, an Aruba native, moved to New York, where they raised Chet along with his brother Gerry “Gee-Money” and his sister, Liesa.

Guarded about his age, Chet only gave milestones in his life to mark the passing of time, such as his permanent move to St. Maarten after Hurricane Luis in 1995.

“Let’s just say, I am old enough to know better and young enough to do better.”

The cold New York winters were nipping at his Caribbean foundation, and he wanted some place warmer. Florida was on the list, but his St. Maarten roots had a stronger pull. “St. Maarten reminded me of freedom. I had been coming here since I was three with family and on my own from around 14-15. I just love St. Maarten.”

Chet’s day job – a mystery to some who only look skin deep – is that of TelEm’s network administrator for the fibre optic

cable (SMPR1) that links St. Maarten via Puerto Rico to the rest of the world. Yes, Chet’s the guy who makes sure you have the ability to send those very important forwards!

“I do have a brain in my head,” he proclaimed with a chuckle.

Finishing his first lemonade, the conversation moved on to his well-inked arms and neck. His grey varsity t-shirt and slacks paired with muted jewellery tells of a guy who is comfortable with himself, while the 12 “spiritual” tattoos on his body signal that he might be a rebel at heart. One tattoo on the left side of his neck is extremely significant: a tribute to his family’s matriarch. The only other woman’s name that would be inked for life on his body would be that of his “girl child” when he is blessed with her.

Turning to his personal style, Chet simply described it as “relevant” – a blend of high fashion and street/urban. He wears what feels and looks good. “I wore two earrings before it was trendy ... I don’t see myself as a rebel--just relevant for the time we are in.”

Chet is blissfully single and “likes to mingle.” His focus is on enjoying every moment of his life. Asked about his singleness, considering his glitterati status, Chet said that was exactly why – he is

tired of women who only see the glitz and glamour of being with him. “I need someone who understands what I do and what I want – a balance. I love an independent woman who remains a lady and does not take on the mannish persona that often comes with independence and competitiveness.”

For now, he hits the sheets with the television on and his iPhone (too many apps to mention) and browses Facebook before going to sleep for the night.

Chet describes himself as having a positive outlook on life and makes a conscious effort to rid his space, and cleanse his karma, of negative people and situations.

More travel is on his bucket list. Chet is a huge Formula 1 racing fan and harbours dreams of one day following the races around the world. Dubai and Monaco are also on his list of must visit places.

Dubai, an Islamic state where alcohol is forbidden, takes top billing for Chet because it is the epitome of everything extravagant without alcohol.

“

Music is a passion and stress reliever for the “boy from the projects.” St. Maarten has “opened” his eyes to different genres of music, expanding his taste from the rap and R&B of his youth to House and club mixes with a dash of merengue, salsa, jazz and zouk. He loves most musical genres, with the exception of heavy metal.

Chet, a Scorpio, has a “short attention span,” so only the most extraordinary things will hold his interest for more than a moment. Although he’s a reader (Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles is a fave), he spends more time flipping the pages of Architectural Digest and GQ. He does occasionally browse fashion magazines to hone his sense of style.

We wrapped up our conversation, two lemonades later, where we started - Chet loves a good party and can be found on the weekends, livin’ it up in a happening watering hole and relaxing his cares away at a Sunday beach party. PLM

hen public relations entrepreneur Saskia Fung Loij returned to the Caribbean from the Netherlands in 2008, she was drawn to the great sense of fashion, creativity, and culture and the unique lifestyle that was offered in the Caribbean.

What she met was a vast difference from what she says is portrayed in big countries. But, with all the charm and talent that existed, one thing was lacking-an effective outlet through which those with talent and creativity could promote their skills and be discovered.

“People who live outside the Caribbean have a strange image of people who are living in the Caribbean. They think we

“They think it is all about beaches, beautiful birds and fishes and sea, but when I came, I found that there was a lot of talent, and I realised that it is very hard for people with talent to break through in the fashion and interior design world,” the Suriname-born, Netherlands-bred, now-Curacao resident, says.

Her intention was to change this. After putting her thoughts together, she came up an idea to use the World Wide Web to promote Caribbean talent in the areas of fashion, lifestyle, cuisine--and just about any and everything Caribbean. Earlier this year, her goal was realised when myfashionlifestyle.com was launched. The website is similar to an online magazine.

In only four months, the website has grown in popularity, received over 40,000 views and has featured a number of talented Caribbean persons, including jewellery designers, models, chefs, and musicians.

At the time of this interview in early November--less than four months after it was formed, the site’s Facebook fan page was 15 “likes” shy of 1,000 fans, which Saskia saw as a milestone.

Saskia is inspired by the story of Trinidadian beauty queen Anya A young Chee, 29, who used her designing talent to win the Lifetime television reality series hit Project Runway, Season 9 this year.

“She is a good example of Caribbean talent that can do great things with the right exposure. She loved fashion and never did anything with her designing talent until participating in Project Runway, and she won. At this moment, everyone is talking about her, and it’s a huge step; and finally Caribbean fashion is being rediscovered,” said Saskia. “I hope many talented Caribbean people will follow her.”

“Many times I talk with young people who have a talent, but in Curacao, where I live, for example, there is no art school. So these youths will have to be lucky to come from a rich family whose parents can send them to an art school abroad, or they end up in an area where their talent is not utilised. Nine out of ten times they go and find a job in hospitality and tourism, and their talent slowly dies because they don’t get the opportunity to do anything with it. This is one of the reasons for myfashionlifestyle.com. We want youths of the Caribbean to see that anything is possible once you set your mind to it.”

The content on the website is fuelled by handpicked bloggers with a Caribbean background. The current crop of 13 bloggers is from Curacao, Aruba and a few with Caribbean roots residing in the Netherlands.

Saskia was born in Suriname, but relocated to the Netherlands at age 8. “I’ve always craved for the Caribbean. It’s so different, compared to the big cities in United States and Europe. Even if you meet a stranger on the street, they would greet you in the Caribbean. The warm culture makes it a whole other life here in the Caribbean.”

Saskia said, when she returned to the Netherlands after visiting the Caribbean in 2004, she felt out of place. She yearned for the Caribbean and had to return to live. risha Marten is a “born and raised” St. Maartener, although people often think she is from Curacao.

She lets it be known that she does have a bit of Curacao in her.

Her mother is from Curacao, and her father from Anguilla, so there you have it--a true Caribbean mix! She studied Business Administration at the University of St. Maarten, where she obtained her associate’s degree, then went on to study in Fort Lauderdale, where she obtained her bachelor’s in business with a minor in marketing. At that point in her life, Marten still didn’t know what she wanted to do and says she only found her niche when she returned to St. Maarten.

Before returning to the island, she had been working several part-time jobs onand off- island. She found her niche when she got hired by Mr. Curtis Haynes at Smitcoms. “We launched Smitcoms in 2000 for the first time; we basically carried it as our baby,” she says. Marten was an assistant marketing and sales manager and, in those eight years that she worked at Smitcoms, she became the marketing manager at the company. She did everything, from launching new services to handling everything marketing-related within the company. Marten just knew that marketing was where she had to be!

She felt this even moreso when she left for a while to further her studies in Holland. There she obtained her master’s degree in global management and launched a magazine with Chet Euton called Boccafina. That was when she fell in love with media and knew that she had to continue working with it—making a part of her life. Boccafina was her baby. With her studies complete, she returned to Smitcoms. Then, in 2009, she felt the strong urge to stand on her own two feet. She launched Montage in January 2009. “Montage is a montage of things--events, media, marketing and sales, and we do all these things because I’m so diverse. Working at Smitcoms really taught me to be diverse,” she states.

Latin night that launched off at The Alley with a dancing competition and ended with a smash at the Village. “This was a completely different type of Latin night than people were used to. People were very excited and enjoyed it very much as the V.I.P section even got to meet and greet with artists like Omega and Tito Nieves.” explains Marten. After this big success, a lot of companies signed with Montage. One of Montage’s most well-known collaborations is that with Communications company UTS. They started working on the Chipster campaign for Chippie and, together with UTS, set out to identify the subscribers under the age of 26.

“The great thing about Chipster is all the great discounts and deals the youngsters get that sign up for a free membership,” Marten explains. The next big Chipster event on Montage’s schedule is the exclusive, free showing of the Twilight saga at the cinema. Only 200 youngsters will be invited. Marten, with her sister, brings out a yearly publication named Taste of St.Maarten that features Dutch

St.Maarten restaurants in order to give those restaurants a boost.

Marten has such a diverse range of events that are scheduled, such as the yearly mother and father’s day event; Souliga Kings and Queens, and has been organizing that for the past three years.

Montage has an impressive clientele: Heineken, Divico, Hard Rock Café, UTS and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau, to name just a few. This year they had a walk-a-thon for Tourism Day, and 600 people participated, “jamming” behind the Happen So Massive band. On Tourism Day, they organized a cultural show where different cultures, including our own, and a variety of foods and music were showcased.

SSLINT is also a recent client, and she worked with them on the first, and biggest, mixed martial arts event on the island: FIERCE AND FURIOUS. Another great Montage event is The Boardwalk Fest.

Recently, the Harbor signed an agreement with TEMPO. The Harbor has always been instrumental in the Boardwalk Fest, and they brought Tarrus Riley and Alaine to perform. Also on the performance Dress, Faith Connexion roster were three local bands and two mariebella boutique Watch, local dance groups, explains Marten.

A day in the life of Marten is a hectic one, as she also has her family to take care of. She takes care of business while her sons are in school. “I juggle different projects all the time. I can switch from one to another; I’m a huge multi-tasker,” says Marten, with a big smile. “Montage consists of a three-person team I call them “The JJ’s (Judesca Coffie & Jenniffer Pelgrim) , we are always on the go, we get things done in a timely fashion, and we only deliver the best.” PLM

rica Fortuno walks into our office looking stylish and stunning. She sports a big smile and is ready for her busy day. Erica was born and raised on St. Maarten and left the island at the tender age of 17 to attend college in New York. She ended up living in the Big Apple for 11 years. This is where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s in Marketing.

She fell in love with the phenomenon of marketing a product through the deep understanding of the demographics and target market.

Upon graduation, she decided to earn some work experience in NY. She seized the opportunity to learn the basics of consumer-packaged goods through her twoyear internship with Kraft General Foods in Tarrytown, NY. She later moved on to managing the St. Maarten Tourist Office in NY for two-and-a-half years, before deciding that it was time to move back to St. Maarten.

When she returned, she ventured into a business partnership and started East Caribbean DMC — a full-service Destination management, marketing and PR company.

Through networking, she was introduced to John Leone from Heineken. They developed a friendship and, later, she was introduced into the ILTT family (International Liquors and Tobacco). She later accepted a position with ILTT to manage the Diageo portfolio, which is a high-end spirit portfolio. “I must say, my consumer packaged goods background with Kraft helped me transition into this position easily and, so far, it’s been a great experience working at ILTT. I really enjoy working with the team there!” Fortuno says.

It has been a challenge balancing work and personal life at times for this hardworking lady, but, thankfully, her work also includes socializing and networking, and it makes it easier to incorporate business and fulfilling personal time. When asked what she wants for the future, she says she definitely sees children in her future and would love to have a family of her own. On the surface, this beautiful woman seems very shy, but there appear to be many layers to her. “A lot of people might think that I’m ‘stuck up’, but I’m just shy sometimes. I like to be on the go, and I love interaction with people. ” Pushing out nearly 1800 products from popular name brands like Del Monte, Revlon, Banana Boat, Spa, and the Energizer group, to name a few, keeps this young professional on her toes. Her marketing efforts are not all commercial, though.

One of the biggest fundraiser sponsorships Divico is involved in yearly is for the Breast Cancer Walka-thon. “We sponsor fundraisers, and I give every cause a little bit.

I believe in sharing the pie so we can help everyone,” she states. On weekdays, she gets her family ready, and she heads out the door for work.

As if this lady isn’t busy enough, she recently started her own company, SSLint N.V., with her husband.

When she isn’t busy working, her time goes to her family. Weekends are reserved exclusively for her husband and daughter. Mornings are spent getting involved in her daughter’s various activities such as swimming and ballet. Sharalee also takes up motor sport as a new passion and hobby and loves to ride her husband’s Suzuki GSXR 1000 bike! In the evening, husband and wife spend time together dancing or going out for dinner. Their friends call them the socialites and, even though she would like to spend a day just relaxing, she is--and always will be--a “busy bee.” What you see is what you get with this dynamic and gorgeous woman.

You could never tell this woman’s life gets hectic and busy from the way she is bursting with energy. Colombianborn Morales was raised in New York and went to school in Florida. It was during her senior year in college that her husband proposed to her, and she followed him to St.Maarten.

Morales manages West Indies Supplies. WIS is a wholesale company that has existed for over 20 years. They represent certain over -the counter –medicines, such as Advil, and also represent companies such as Maybelline, Sally Hansen, and John Frieda. The company was bought over from its previous owner by her in- laws. When she moved here, she began to work in the warehouse. Gradually, she learned the daily operations and moved into management. A typical workday for her starts early in the morning and continues into the late hours of the night. “I have a crazy hectic schedule, but I’m very fortunate to have Chris my Sales Manager working alongside me. He really knows the business and is just as passionate as I am.”

Morales makes sure to balance her work and personal life the best she can. “My husband and I have a son, Anthony, in his second year of college. Our daughter, Alexia, keeps us busy as well, whether its school or her dance classes. I try to make it to the gym at least 4 times a week and have dinner on the table by 6.”

Although Morales loves to go out, she is super family- oriented. Her kids are her life; her sisters are her partners in crime. She adores her parents, and her husband, on most days, is her best friend she says. A super woman is nothing without the ones she loves. PLM lifestyle sxm

u début de l’année, je me souviens que je me disais, « j’élève cette publication à un niveau supérieur et j’arriverai à mon objectif au milieu de l’année pour ensuite m’accorder un congé bien mérité après trois ans de dur labeur. Parce que si j’en crois mon planning, tout sera bouclé dans les temps ».

Et bien, les choses n’ont pas vraiment tourné comme je me l’imaginais. La vie se charge de bousculer tous vos plans.

L’inattendu survient, et tout peut partir dans une autre direction. Mais j’ai appris que tant que l’on a une vision, on a toujours une mission, et ce, en dépit de tout ce que l’on peut décider. J’ai toujours été quelqu’un qui voit les choses du bon côté.

Et j’ai toujours pensé qu’il y avait un message caché derrière chaque situation.

La vie nous prépare à nous ouvrir toujours plus et il y aura toujours des horizons plus grands. Si nous écoutons attentivement son message, nous arriverons à nous hisser au niveau supérieur avec succès. Garder son objectif en ligne de mire, conserver ses aspirations, nous aide à gérer les situations imprévues. Christine Mc Gregor, Coach de vie chez TDC, nous donne un bon aperçu de cette manière de vivre en espérant beaucoup et nous explique comment éviter les déceptions quand les choses ne vont pas dans le sens où on les avait planifiées.

Comme nous aimons mettre l’accent sur le pouvoir de la femme, nous en avons choisi cinq pour cette nouvelle édition, les meilleures dans leur catégorie, celles qui savent comment un travail doit être bien fait !

Les pieds sur terre, élégantes, belles, drôles, bosseuses… sont quelques-uns des qualificatifs qui décrivent ces femmes qui font notre Une - Sharalee Lint-Beudeker, Erica Fortuno, Gloria Morales - et nos pages intérieures - Grisha Maarten et Saskia Fung Loij. Ces super women sont toutes des cadres marketing avec une carrière à succès et elles offrent un parfait modèle de réussite.

Les hommes ne pouvaient pas être laissés de côté, d’autant plus quand il s’agit d’un passionné de gastronomie de la trempe de Dino Jagtiani du Rare et du Temptation.

Rien que de le mentionner, me voilà l’eau à la bouche ! Je suis pleine de nostalgie au souvenir des raviolis que Jagtiani avait préparé à ses invités lors d’un dîner spécial. Du grand art culinaire que vous pourrez vous essayer à reproduire, puisqu’il a été assez généreux pour nous donner quelques-unes de ses recettes.

Maintenant parlons un peu de Chet ! Un autre homme, une autre histoire; il est partout, tout le temps, qu’on se le dise. On le connaît tous, mais pas vraiment en fait.

Alita Singh s’est offert un tête à tête avec Chet et nous livre une image bien différente de celle que nous nous sommes créée.

Pink House roi du Funk! par

Pink House est né dans une vieille maison créole au cœur de Colombier – sur la partie française - il y a trois ans. Le groupe, fédéré autour de son chanteur Alban Charton, offre un son tout particulier - un écho surgi du passé qui résonne chez tous les amoureux de la musique – l’exultation de la funk.

C

e nom, « Pink House », qui attise la curiosité chez tous ceux qui l’entendent, a été adopté en raison du lieu de répétition du groupe - la pittoresque maison rose d’Alban et ses ornements gingerbread. « Le nom s’est imposé de lui-même » explique Alban, guitariste et manager de Pink House. L’histoire du nom de Pink House présente des similitudes avec celle d’autres formations célèbres - Lady Antebellum pour ne citer qu’elle, dont le nom est une pure référence à l’histoire du Sud des Etats-Unis. Comme Lady Antebellum, Pink House attire une foule de mélomanes et laisse planer une énigme sur son nom.

Le bassiste de Pink House, John Hannibal, voit dans le nom du groupe un prélude à sa prédilection pour les classiques du Funk. «Le Funk est une musique attirante, et le nom du groupe suscite un intérêt en lui-même, sans pour autant rien dévoiler de notre son».

Hannibal, comme le reste de Pink House, est un musicien très polyvalent, qui a rejoint le groupe pour l’amour du Funk.

Alban, grand amateur de jazz (avec un solide penchant pour le Funk), voulait en jouer plus à son arrivée sur l’île, il y a sept ans.

Mais pour le jazz, il faut une ambiance blues, et le décor tropical des Caraïbes sied plus aux musiques de fêtes.

Alors pourquoi le Funk ? « Les gens adorent danser. Et le funk fait bouger tout le monde » avance Alban. Les rythmes du funk touchent la fibre sensible de tous ceux qui l’écoutent, les invitant à bouger, balancer, à plonger dans ses extases. Alors Alban s’est lancé dans le Funk, et c’est resté. Il pousse ses musiciens à jouer les tubes d’Earth, Wind and Fire, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, mais aussi d’Al Green ou de ce qu’il y a de meilleur chez Bob Marley. Les autres membres du groupe – Hannibal, Bruce Jackson,

le batteur et le chanteur Kenneth Hall – se sont eux aussi laissés gagner par la fièvre Funk.

A ce jour, Pink House a enregistré deux albums en démo avec des reprises de tubes Funk des années 60 et 70. Parmi lesquelles : “A Long Walk” (Jill Scott), le “Ain’t No Sunshine” version Al Green, “Brick House” (The Commodores), “Get Up, Stand Up” (Bob Marley), “I Wish” (Stevie Wonder), “On Broadway” (George Benson), “Play That Funky Music , White Boy” (Wild Cherry), et “Superstar” (Jamelia).

Aux côtés des membres du groupe, cette démo a été est composée avec la chanteuse Nathalie Jacaria, Manu au clavier, et l’ex batteur du groupe, Greg Charton. Pink House va très bientôt diminuer ses reprises pour intégrer une partie de sa propre créativité à son répertoire.

Alban et le reste du quartet souhaitent dans l’avenir travailler à des compositions originales mélangé avec des classiques du Funk.

Alban est professeur de musique sur la partie française et travaille à la composition du tout premier album de Pink House. Le groupe prendra d’assaut le studio d’enregistrement dès que toutes les notes et les clefs seront à la bonne place sur la partition.

Depuis sa création, Pink House a vu certains membres du groupe prendre des chemins différents. Aucune séparation dans la colère cependant : Saint-Martin est souvent un endroit où les gens viennent vivre leur rêve avant de repartir.

Ces musiciens ont tous laissé une trace dans ce qui fait l’essence et la force de Pink House aujourd’hui : leur amour de la musique, leur énergie, leur penchant pour la fête. « Ici, tu connais nécessairement tout le monde dans l’univers de la musique » témoigne Alban. Il lui a donc été facile de remplacer le dernier batteur, son frère Greg, quand il a quitté l’île pour poursuivre d’autres routes.

Et c’est Jackson, un New Yorkais installé à Saint-Martin, qui lui a succédé.

Pink House joue du Funk tous les vendredis au Dinghy Dock à Oyster Pond. Le groupe s’est aussi produit à la Factory, au Calmos Cafe, au Shore et Rainbow Cafe à Grand Case, au Club One Eleven et au Boathouse de Cole Bay, à la Loterie Farm de Pic Paradis, au Bali Bar sur la Marina Royale, au Bikini Beach et à La Playa à Orient Bay, au Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort et Spa et à l’hôtel Mercure.

e processus réalisé en consultation externe, à l’aide d’une petite seringue, offre aux patients des semi permanents par le biais du PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), ou temporaires, grâce à une multitude d’options allant du collagène, à l’utilisation de la graisse du corps du patient. Avec les micro canules du nouveau DermaSculpt, le monde des injections de comblement a pris tout récemment une meilleure tournure.

Depuis son entrée récente sur le marché américain par CosmoFrance Inc., le DermaSculpt, approuvé par les autorités compétentes américaines, a pris son envol. Les efforts précédents pour réduire les ecchymoses ou les gonflements qui suivent généralement les injections de comblement induisaient l’application de crèmes anesthésiques ou de glace sur la peau pour la refroidir. Ces traitements étaient sans commune mesure avec les aiguilles sans douleur de DermaSculpt.

Il ne s’agit pas réellement d’une aiguille, plutôt d’une micro canule épointée, souple, pour des injections tout en douceur et sans ecchymoses. Le risque de rupture des vaisseaux sanguins s’en trouve grandement réduit. La technologie DermaSculpt est tout particulièrement encourageante parce que ses effets durent plus longtemps que les autres produits de beauté similaires : moins de gonflements favorise en effet la longévité des résultats du comblement. Mieux encore, il n’y a pas besoin d’anesthésie d’aucune sorte. Le docteur Susan Weinkle, professeur à l’Université de South Florida, a vanté les mérites de cette nouvelle canule dans une interview récente accordée au site modernmedicine.com. « Ces canules sont révolutionnaires en ce sens qu’elles causent beaucoup moins de contusions, ce qui fait que le temps d’immobilisation est très réduit, voire nul. Mes patients esthétiques veulent souvent une procédure rapide et ces canules originales m’aident à réaliser des soins sans traumatisme, avec un temps de récupération beaucoup plus court, par rapport aux aiguilles traditionnelles ».

Comme l’explique le docteur Weinkle, le fait d’amoindrir les contusions n’est pas anodin.

Nous vivons dans une société qui ne supporte pas de vieillir, et grâce à la technologie, nous pouvons conserver un visage jeune, qui est toujours un plus. Il existe de nombreux procédés pour réduire ridules et crevasses.

Les injections douces de comblements des tissus font partie des plus par : Liza Lentini populaires, juste après le Botox. vienne perturber leur vie sociale. Moins de contusions aide aussi à garder l’opération top secrète, ce qui est une amélioration essentielle dans le monde de l’esthétique. Le professeur Kimberly Cockerham, chirurgien esthétique en Californie, pratique des injections de ce type depuis plus de 20 ans. Elle était très excitée d’inclure les canules de DermaSculpt à sa pratique. « La complication la plus redoutée pour les comblements est le risque que le produit entre dans un vaisseau et cause un blocage du flux sanguin, pouvant entrainer des nécroses (la peau noircit et tombe) » explique le docteur Cockerham. « Avec une canule, le risque de cette complication particulière est éliminé. Et le patient a, en plus, moins de contusions ».

Qui qu’il en soit, le plus grand succès de DermaSculpt dépend de la capacité du médecin à s’adapter à ces différences particulières.

A travers sa technique déposée de « sculpture de la peau », DermaSculpt explique que les médecins peuvent « littéralement glisser la micro canule DermaSculpt sous la peau du patient », mais que la souplesse de cette micro canule peut représenter un défi pour traiter une zone cible. Ces canules épointées sont parfaites pour le comblement des lèvres (leur redonner du volume) mais elles ne sont pas recommandées pour réduire les ridules autour de la bouche par exemple. « Les comblements cutanés peuvent être utilisés pour soigner les cicatrices ou corriger les paupières comme extenseur de tissus, ou pour des problèmes post-traumatiques ou chirurgicaux » déclare le docteur Cockerham.

Pour que leurs médecins soient toujours au point, DermaSculpt propose des sessions de formation et des séminaires dans le monde entier.

Même si elle est considérée comme l’un des actes de chirurgie esthétique les moins lourds, il est important de rappeler que ces injections de comblements ne sont pas sans risque.

La permanence des effets peut être considérée comme une option rentable, mais pas quand le résultat est une erreur chirurgicale.

Même si les complications après de telles injections sont rares, il y a toujours un risque qu’elles surviennent. Dans les cas

malheureux, il peut se produire un gonflement de la peau avec un risque de formation d’abcès ou d’ulcération. Un résultat inégal ou pas très attractif est également toujours du domaine du possible.

La plupart des complications peuvent être guéries par une nouvelle opération. Le docteur Ashraf Hamdan, un libanais de Beyrouth, affirme dans une interview sur le site modernmedicine.com, que même s’ils sont rares, il a été le témoin de véritables désastres après des comblements. « Chose intéressante, je n’ai constaté ce type de complications que très rarement, lorsque je pratiquais en Floride. La situation est très différente à l’extérieur des Etats-Unis, mais même dans les pays proposant une grande variété de traitements de comblements esthétiques permanents, les médecins hésitent à les pratiquer quand ils prennent conscience des complications éventuelles ».

Malheureusement, on ne peut jamais prévoir comment le corps d’un patient va réagir aux injections de comblement, tant que la procédure n’a pas été réalisée. Quoi qu’il en soit, les patients doivent débuter leur démarche chirurgicale, en faisant une recherche poussée pour dénicher un bon médecin. Le docteur Kimberly Cockerham tient ces sages paroles en guise de conseils : « Lorsque vous allez choisir votre médecin traitant, tournezvous plutôt vers un ophtalmologiste, un otorhino, un dermatologue ou un chirurgien généraliste qui soit certifié, avec une spécialité en chirurgie plastique et au moins 5 années d’expérience ». Assurez-vous que le chirurgien est certifié par l’American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) ou bien, dans le cas d’une chirurgie faciale, par l’American Board of Otolaryngology.

Ne laissez pas le secrétariat du chirurgien donner des excuses sur son absence de certification. Et s’il vous-plaît, ne laissez pas quelqu’un qui n’est pas médecin, vous injecter quoi que ce soit dans le corps. Le jeu n’en vaut pas la chandelle. « Si l’affaire a l’air trop belle pour être vraie…C’est qu’elle l’est ! » met en garde le docteur Cockerham. « Faites attention aux produits contrefaits.

Après Halloween, Thanksgiving, voilà que Noël arrive ! Enfin : la voici cette saison des fêtes de fin d’année que nous avons tous tant espéré.

L

es enfants (de tous les âges) espèrent avoir été assez sages en rédigeant leurs listes de vœux, les parents fouillent le cyberespace à la recherche d’idées cadeaux, les menus sont programmés et les disputes, sur le choix du membre de la famille qui va héberger les festivités cette année, sont prises avec humour.

Noël est sans doute la période la plus surexcitante de l’année.

L’organisation fait partie intégrante du divertissement et les femmes de la famille comparer leurs notes de concert : tu te charges du dessert ?

Qui s’occupe des décorations ? Qui va chercher Tante Jess ? L’excitation augmente au fur et à mesure que la conscience de l’événement prend forme dans nos esprits.

C’est comme si il n’y avait plus de limites et ces impressions d’amour et d’harmonie grandissent au même rythme que l’ouverture des fenêtres sur le calendrier de l’Avent.

Et finalement, le grand jour arrive.

Vêtues de nos plus beaux atours, l’on assiste à la messe de Noël et l’on en revit toute la magie en entonnant

nos hymnes préférés. Comblé par ce sentiment de paix et la magie de Noël, l’on rentre à la maison se préparer pour les festivités. Et l’on s’imagine alors que cette impression de magie va se poursuivre et que les sentiments de paix et d’harmonie vont tous nous habiter.

Et bien, c’est faux !

Quelle déception en effet quand la Tante Jess se met à piquer du nez dans sa soupe, que les jumeaux se battent pour savoir qui ouvrira son cadeau en premier, que votre sœur a laissé brûler la dinde que vous aviez préparé et qu’elle n’avait qu’à passer au four, que Jimmy va encore se mettre à roter tout fort (c’est son dada) et que les voisins se pointent avec une heure de retard devant la table parfaitement dressée pour Noël.

Le meilleur des cadeaux de Noël que l’on puisse s’offrir ? C’est celui d’arrêter d’espérer !

Prenez conscience que tout peut virer au drame et que cela va même très certainement arriver !

La nourriture va vous couper l’appétit. Les enfants vont encore se battre (les adultes aussi d’ailleurs)

et oui, même le jour de Noël, il faut s’attendre à être déçu. Après tout, nous ne sommes que des êtres humains, incapables de mettre la vie et nos comportements sur pause, même en cet instant magique.

L’on peut bien sûr souhaiter la perfection, mais mieux vaut ne pas trop compter dessus. Donc allez-y : organisez tout, prenez plaisir à le faire mais en ayant conscience que tout ce que l’on programme à la lettre ne fonctionnera pas nécessairement comme on l’avait prévu. Attendezvous à l’inattendu et tout ira bien !

Comment mettre un terme à ces kilos superflus que l’on attrape pendant les Fêtes…

Biscuits de Noël, bûches de Noël, dinde et tous ses petits accompagnements… L’esprit des Fêtes de fin d’année semble aller de pair avec les calories qu’on avale. Et c’est tout à fait compréhensible, qu’en cette période magique, on pense avoir mérité le droit de s’octroyer un petit plaisir ou deux. Mais pourquoi ces kilos superflus semblent-ils nous sauter dessus sournoisement au moment où l’on entre dans la nouvelle année ? Besoin de conseils pour casser ce cercle vicieux ? Grâce à Barrie Rosencrans, un as de la diététique qui nous vient de l’Ohio, PURE vous livre quelques solutions très efficaces pour profiter des menus de Fêtes en s’évitant les traditionnels regrets.

1 : Pourquoi les gens prennent-ils autant de poids pendant les Fêtes?

« Les études prouvent que les gens prennent en moyenne entre 1,5 et 2,5 kilos, entre Thanksgiving et le Nouvel An. La raison médicale ?

C’est principalement le résultat d’une augmentation de la consommation de calories couplée à une diminution des exercices ».

L’effervescence de cette période de Fêtes nous pousse à reconsidérer nos priorités, et la pratique du sport se retrouve bien souvent en bas de notre liste. Cela peut sembler assez bénin sur le moment, mais ce manque d’efforts nous pénalise de la pire manière. Couché tard en raison d’une soirée au bureau la veille, vous avez manqué votre heure de gym le lendemain matin. Et comme vous êtes en retard, vous sautez dans un taxi au lieu de marcher, pour gagner du temps. « Avec une surabondance de choses à faire pendant les Fêtes de fin d’année, les gens ont souvent moins de temps à se consacrer et faire des exercices » constate Rosencrans. Et nous y voilà : moins d’exercices et plus de calories. C’est l’addition toute bête du désastre diététique annoncé.

Notre conseil : notez cinq manières toutes simples d’introduire des exercices sportifs pendant ce tourbillon des Fêtes. Marchez au lieu de conduire, empruntez les escaliers, emmenez votre déjeuner au bureau ou pensez aux alternatives non sucrées, pour vous et les enfants, pendant cette période.

2 : Quels sont les pièges caloriques auxquels on ne pense pas de prime abord (sans parler des gâteaux et de toute la nourriture bien grasse, qui tombent sous le sens) ?

Le sucre, sous toutes ses formes les plus diverses, peut nous atteindre bien plus que ce que l’on croit, et plus particulièrement celui contenu dans les alcools. Quand les biscuits et les gâteaux sont ouvertement montrés du doigt, ce sont en fait ces calories liquides sournoises qui finissent par avoir notre peau. Selon Rosencrans, « en plus d’être moins actifs, les gens ont tendance à augmenter leur consommation d’alcool pendant les fêtes et ingurgitent les calories contenues dans les vins, bières et autres boissons mixées. Un verre de 75 centilitres de vin contient 90 calories et un cocktail, 120. Quand on boit, nos inhibitions fondent face à la nourriture qu’on ne goûterait même pas en temps normal ». Admettons-le : ce qui

ne nous tenterait même pas avant quelques verres, nous semble irrésistibles au fur et à mesure que la nuit avance.

Apparemment donc, la bière nous donnerait plus grands yeux que grands ventres. Et pire encore, la nature de ces calories consommées pendant les Fêtes ne différentes de celles consommées le reste de l’année. « Ces calories sont inutiles en ce sens qu’elles sont moins chargées en vitamines et minéraux, en fibres, mais plus chargées en sucre et en graisses. Elles ne proviennent pas de la nourriture que compose un repas normal, et donc, finissent en calories superflues qui favorisent la prise de poids » explique Rosencrans.

Notre conseil : tenez un journal alimentaire.

Pour éviter l’ennui d’avoir à rédiger les choses et ne pas passer pour le tueur d’ambiance les soir de Fêtes, prenez plutôt des photos avec votre téléphone portable de tout ce que vous consommez en dehors de la maison. Vous savez ce que l’on dit : un cliché ne triche pas.

3 : Qu’adopter comme régime puisqu’il est si difficile de résister à la tentation pendant les fêtes ?

L’une des clés du succès selon Rosencrans implique de redéfinir sa propre approche du régime. Le nutritionniste conseille de miser sur des aliments riches en fibres (fruits, légumes, poids et céréales) lors des repas habituels.

Pourquoi ? « Ces aliments nous rassasient.

Ils donnent une impulsion nutritive saine et délicieuse à notre journée et nous aident à traverser ces intenses moments de shopping, préparation et organisation des Fêtes » avance Rosencrans.

Notre conseil : Prenez le temps de faire de bonnes courses en début de semaine. Concoctez-vous (à vos invités aussi) des tapas à base de guacamole à haute teneur en fibres, fait d’avocats frais, ou préparez de bons houmous car les poids chiches sont tout aussi riches en fibres.

4 : Quelles sont les options à faibles calories ou limitées en graisse qui peuvent être servies à table sans pour autant gâcher la fête ?

Combinez ces tapas riches en fibres avec des plateaux de crudités, composés de carottes, brocolis et autres poivrons frais. Les fruits frais sont quant à eux plus sympas en brochettes. Pommes, bananes, oranges, kiwi, goyave, et baies et pleins d’autres bonnes choses

sont à adopter pour un régime coloré et riche en fibres. Pensez aux fruits secs : figues, raisins et abricots sont bourrés de vitamines. Et comme plat principal, pourquoi ne pas servir du poisson à la vapeur ou au four accompagné de légumes grillés?

Notre conseil : Offrez à vos invités un smoothie aux fruits délicieux sans alcool, décoré de son ombrelle festive et de fruits. Voilà un exemple d’alternative à laquelle personne ne pourra résister.

5 : Quel type de petits exercices pourriez-vous recommander qui feraient toute la différence?

Si vous envisagez de déclarer la guerre à vos bourrelets, cela rendra l’expérience bien plus décourageante. Au lieu d’une méthode militaire, retenez ce poncif que les petites choses font toute la différence. Et c’est le cas pour votre tour de taille. Commencez la journée par une séance de yoga, marchez pendant votre pause déjeuner, ou allez promenez votre chien après le dîner autour de chez vous.

Rosencrans décompose comment il est étonnamment facile de perdre du poids, à n’importe quelle période de l’année, en éliminant quelques calories superflues au quotidien, quelles que soient vos habitudes. « 3500 calories équivalent à 500 grammes en termes de poids. Divisez cette somme par les 7 jours de la semaine. Vous pouvez vous fixer à 250 calories de nourriture en moins chaque jour et commencer à perdre du poids de manière régulière. Lisez aussi les étiquettes.

Combien y-a-t-il de calories dans un Frappuccino, un Doughnut ou ou des nems? Regardez attentivement et vous constaterez combien il est facile d’éliminer. C’est agréable de se rappeler que toutes ces petites choses peuvent faire la différence et vous ramenez dans le droit chemin ».

Notre conseil : Offrez le cadeau pour vous motiver. Pourquoi pas des cours de Tai Chi ou un nouveau vélo? Peut-être que vous n’irez pas à la gym tous les jours, mais cela ne signifie pas que vous ne pouvez pas vous engager à faire un minimum d’exercices quotidiens tout au long de l’année - à votre façon. Rappelezvous enfin qu’on ne parle pas uniquement de poids, mais que le but est de rester en bonne santé pour profiter de bien d’autres Fêtes de fin d’année. lifestyle sxm

Le dîner de Dino La cuisine, c’est comme l’amour par

vec un regard intense, le chef se concentre sur sa mission : le dîner qu’il concocte à un groupe d’amis proches et de partenaires qui leur donnera un avant-goût des Fêtes de fin d’année.

Un brin par ici, une petite touche par là : le goût de la créativité prend le commandement dans la cuisine. Il est indéniable que Dino est à la fois perfectionniste et innovant. Le maître est visiblement au sommet de son art. Rencontre avec le Chef Dino Jagtiani.

Originaire de Sint Maarten, Dino, diplômé de l’Institut culinaire américain de New York, possède deux des meilleures tables de l’île : le Temptation et le Rare. Le Temptation est ouvert depuis dix ans et à cette époque, la célébrité de Jagtiani avait déjà fait le tour du monde. Le Temptation a reçu le prix du restaurant de l’année décerné par le guide Gault Millau trois années de suite.

En 2005, Bon Appétit Magazine qualifie le Temptation comme “l’un des dix meilleurs restaurants des Caraïbes”.

L’artiste gastronome de 36 ans a raflé la médaille d’or de la compétition « Taste of Caribbean » à Miami à deux reprises et il est également cité dans les magazines National Geographic Traveler, Caribbean Travel and Life, Islands, American Way, et Hemispheres de même que dans les journaux The Miami Herald et le Washington Times.

Si cette reconnaissance médiatique fait de lui une célébrité, Jagtiani garde les pieds sur terre. Parler avec lui, c’est comme discuter avec un bon copain. Il est drôle, amical et réfléchi.

Pendant qu’il jette un œil à la disposition des tables en face de lui, Jagtiani sourit, et se remémore le jour où il a quitté son île ensoleillée pour les gratte-ciels de Manhattan. « J’ai vu la neige pour la première fois et réalisé ce que qu’être à l’heure voulait vraiment dire ».

Cet enfant du pays a été rapidement gagné par le rythme de la ville ; une fois son diplôme en poche, il quitte New York pour Londres et le luxueux Hôtel Waldorf. C’est là, selon le site Web de son restaurant qu’il « apprend réellement à cuisiner ». « Mais j’avais un rêve » confie Jagtiani tandis que nous sommes installés dans le salon du Temptation. « Je voulais rentrer à la maison, être aux côtés de mes amis et de ma famille et ouvrir mon

propre restaurant ». C’est ce restaurant qui est devenu le Temptation. Le chef cuisinier rit et déclare : « Nous étions à table avec des amis et des membres de ma famille et j’étais en train de me creuser les méninges pour trouver le bon nom pour mon futur restaurant, quand un serveur a apporté un panier de petits pains et que quelqu’un a dit : « éloigne-le de moi, c’est trop de tentations » et là, je me suis dit : « Bingo! ». « Nouveau Caribbean » : c’est par cette expression que Jagtiani qualifie sa cuisine. « On utilise des techniques françaises, en faisant griller, sauter, pocher… et l’on ajoute nos propres spécificités de cuisine caribéenne ». Le plus important, c’est que toutes les assiettes soient équilibrées, confie le chef d’entreprise. « Mes plats doivent être à la fois aigre-doux, chaud et froid, amer et salé, croustillant et tendre à la fois. Prenez un hamburger. Un hamburger a tout cela.

Tous ces ingrédients sont réunis : un pain moelleux, une viande salée, les oignons sucrés et savoureux, une salade croquante et des millions de gens en sont mordus ». « J’aime vraiment ce que je fais et je suis un passionné de cuisine » explique Jagtiani, quand on l’interroge sur le secret de sa réussite. « J’ai su que je voulais devenir Chef dès l’âge de sept ans et je me souviens de moi en train de jouer dans la cuisine de ma mère, fasciné par toutes ses casseroles.

J’aime rendre les gens heureux et je pense que c’est le métier d’un bon Chef que de donner du bonheur. Je pense également que les cuisiniers font de bons maris (il rit).

Il y a beaucoup d’amour là, qui vient de l’intérieur ».

Pour pouvoir gagner ses lettres de noblesse dans la restauration, il faut être engagé et discipliné. « C’est difficile parfois. Il m’arrive de temps en temps de douter de ma propre démarche mais je pense que tant que tu es aux commandes, il n’y a aucune raison que ça ne marche pas ». Crise économique ou pas, une qualité constante est l’ingrédient clé du succès, et le Temptation l’a bien compris.

Le chef sélectionne ses produits lui-même, quitte à courir à travers toute l’île, de la ferme Tilapia de South Reward aux jardins rastas de Bellevue. Pêches du jour de mahi-mahi, thons et vivaneaux ; roquette, estragon et basilic du jardin : le goût délicat et l’excellence sans faille du Temptation sont les atouts qui fidélisent la clientèle. « Je viens ici au moins une fois par semaine » s’exclame l’avocat Michael Miller, après un apéritif sucré-salé fait de beignets au fromage de chèvre et poires pochées, vin rouge et miel de romarin. « Le service est excellent, les produits divins et l’ambiance sympa. Mon ami Dino est méticuleux, ses plats sont parfaits jusque dans le moindre détail. J’adore son menu de fêtes. Il est à la fois traditionnel et original : tout simplement stupéfiant».

het Euton sourit quand je lui demande s’il veut prendre un café, ou peut-être un petitdéjeuner, au Chesterfield’s ce samedi matin-là. Il refuse dans un soupir, m’explique que sa dernière virée nocturne ne remonte qu’à quelques heures et que seule, une bonne limonade viendra à bout des abus de la veille.

Cette image de fêtard invétéré semble lui coller à la peau ; une impression qui s’éteint vite toutefois quand il commence à lever le voile sur son enfance new-yorkaise entrecoupée de séjour sur l’île, son paradis ; quand il dit son désir d’avoir un jour une petite-fille pour faire l’équilibre, lui qui a deux fils, Joshua David et Jonah Gabriel.

Chet est Saint-Martinois par sa mère, née sur la partie française de l’île. Son père est originaire d’Aruba. Elevés par leurs parents, Chet, son frère Gerry dit “Gee-Money” et sa sœur Liesa, ont grandi à New York.

L’homme est discret sur son âge et ne livre que quelques étapes de sa vie ; parmi ces temps forts, son installation définitive à Sint Maarten, au lendemain du passage de l’ouragan Luis en 1995. « Disons simplement que je suis assez vieux pour mieux comprendre les choses et suffisamment jeune pour progresser encore”. Le froid des hivers new-yorkais titillant ses racines caribéennes, Chet rêvait de s’installer sous un climat plus clément. Il a d’abord pensé à la Floride, mais finalement ses racines saint-martinoises se sont vite rappelées à lui. « Saint-Martin est synonyme pour moi de liberté. Je venais sur l’île en famille depuis l’âge de trois ans, puis tout seul, à partir de quatorze ou quinze ans. J’adore Saint-Martin ».

Une fois la première limonade ingurgitée, la conversation glisse sur les tatouages qu’il a dans le cou et sur les bras. Sa tenue qui rappelle celle des étudiants ajoutée à ses bijoux clinquants donne l’image d’un homme qui a confiance en lui, quand ses douze tatouages “spirituels” révèlent une âme de rebelle. L’un de ses tatouages, sur le côté gauche de son cou, est très parlant : c’est un hommage à la mère. Le seul autre nom de femme qu’il inscrira un jour sur sa peau, sera celui de la petite fille qu’il rêve d’avoir un jour.

Son style personnel, Chet le décrit simplement comme “actuel”, à mi chemin entre la haute couture et l’influence urbaine. Il porte ce qui fait de mieux et de plus beau. « J’ai eu deux boucles d’oreilles avant que ça ne devienne à la mode. Je ne me considère pas comme un rebelle, juste comme quelqu’un bien dans son époque ».

Chet est voluptueusement célibataire mais prêt à ne plus l’être. Son objectif ? Profiter de tous les bons moments de l’existence.

Interrogé sur son célibat au regard de la célébrité qui est la sienne, Chet répond que c’est exactement sur cet aspect que le bât blesse : il est fatigué de ces femmes qui ne jurent que par le luxe et les paillettes quand elles sont à son bras. « J’ai besoin de quelqu’un qui comprenne ce que je fais et ce que je veux : un équilibre. J’aime les femmes indépendantes, mais qui savent rester femme, et ne deviennent pas masculines ce qui est souvent le cas quand elles sont indépendantes et dans la compétition ».

Aujourd’hui, Chet dort seul ses draps avec la télé allumée et son Iphone (aux milliards d’applications) pour surfer sur Facebook avant de dormir.

Chet se décrit comme quelqu’un qui voit le côté positif de l’existence et qui tient son karma et son espace vital toujours loin débarrasse des situations compliquées et des gens négatifs.

Sur sa liste de vœux, plus de voyages. Chet est un véritable mordu de Formule 1et il rêve un jour pouvoir suivre les courses sur les circuits du monde entier. Dubaï et Monaco sont ses deux destinations de prédilection.

Avec une préférence pour Dubaï, cité musulmane où la consommation d’alcool est bannie, et qui apparaît donc pour cela à ses yeux comme le haut lieu de l’extravagance.

La musique est une vraie passion et l’anti stress par excellence: Saint-Martin l’a ouvert à différents genres musicaux, étendant les goûts de sa jeunesse pour le Rap et le R’n’B à la House et à la musique Club en passant par le merengue, la salsa, le jazz ou encore le zouk. Il aime à peu près tout, si ce n’est le Heavy Metal.

Chet, qui est Scorpion, a une concentration limitée, et seules les choses les plus extraordinaires retiennent ainsi son attention.

Même s’il lit (les « Vampire Chronicles » d’Anne Rice comptent parmi ses livres favoris), il passe plus de temps à feuilleter l’Architectural Digest et GQ, où à consulter de temps à autre des magazines de mode pour aiguiser son propre sens du style.

Notre conversation s’achève deux limonades plus tard, au point où nous l’avions commencée. Chet aime les bonnes fiestas et on peut le trouver le week-end un verre à la main dans une fête ou se la coulant douce le dimanche à une Beach party. lifestyle sxm

Elevée sous un climat froid, les montagnes rocheuses du Massachusetts, Lentini, fille d’un orfèvre, a commencé à réaliser ses propres bijoux à l’âge de neuf ans. e qu’elle y a découvert est à des années lumières de l’image que l’on en donne à l’étranger. Mais si le charme et le talent existent dans notre région, une chose manquait cruellement : un point de vente efficace, une vitrine, où les créateurs allaient enfin pouvoir promouvoir leurs savoir-faire. « Ceux qui vivent à l’étranger ont une image étrange des Caribéens. Ils pensent que nous vivons sous des Palapas, vêtus de jupes en feuillages et portant des fruits sur la tête. Ils croient également que nos atouts se cantonnent à nos plages, aux oiseaux magnifiques, aux poissons et à la mer… Mais que je suis venue la première fois, j’ai découvert qu’il y avait énormément de talents et réalisé combien il était difficile pour ces créateurs

talentueux d’entrer dans l’univers de la mode ou du monde de la déco intérieure » explique cette femme originaire du Surinam, élevée en Hollande et qui vit aujourd’hui à Curaçao.

Son intention était donc de changer la donne. Après avoir rassemblé ses idées, elle a décidé d’utiliser la Toile pour promouvoir les talents de la région qu’ils s’expriment dans la mode, l’artisanat, la gastronomie ou de manière général tout ce qui a attrait avec la Caraïbe. Et au début de l’année, elle a atteint son but avec la naissance de son site myfashionlifestyle. com.

Ce site Web se consulte comme un magazine online. Vous vous enregistrez et parcourez les créations des stylistes, les accessoires incroyables, les magasins dernières tendances en matière de mode,

les produits caribéens pour la maison, les événements spéciaux, la gastronomie ou encore la musique en vogue dans la région. « J’ai pu remarquer que nous avions beaucoup de visiteurs du monde entier ; c’est amusant de consulter la liste chaque semaine. L’autre jour, nous avons eu un internaute du Vietnam ».

En quatre mois seulement, le site a su gagner en popularité, a reçu plus de 40 000 visites et a représenté nombre de Caribéens de talent, que ce soit des créateurs de bijoux, des stylistes, des chefs ou des musiciens.

Au moment de cette interview début novembre, moins de mois après l’ouverture du site, la page dédiée du site sur Facebook comptait 1000 fans, une étape importante pour Saskia.

Saskia s’inspire de l’histoire de la reine de beauté Trinidadienne Anya A young Chee, 29 ans, qui grâce à son talent de styliste a remporté l’émission de télé réalité Project Runway, dont la neuvième saison est diffusée cette année. « Elle est un parfait exemple de l’artiste Caribéen qui peut faire de grandes choses avec une bonne médiatisation.

Elle adorait la mode et n’avait jamais rien fait de son talent de styliste, jusqu’à ce qu’elle participe à Project Runway, et qu’elle gagne. Et depuis, tout le monde parle d’elle et elle a franchi un grand pas.

Et finalement, la mode caribéenne a été redécouverte » explique Saskia. « J’espère que beaucoup de Caribéens vont suivre son exemple ».

Parmi tous les sites existants, qu’est-ce qui différencie myfashionlifestyle.com? « Beaucoup de sites Web sont tellement chargés qu’il est difficile de s’y retrouver.

Je voulais un site sur lequel on puisse facilement surfer. Quand un internaute n’est pas intéressé par toutes les informations de voyages par exemple, il doit pouvoir immédiatement savoir où il va ».

Avant de s’installer vraiment sur l’île, elle a fait plusieurs jobs à mi temps, sur l’île ou à l’extérieur. Elle a trouvé son créneau au moment où elle a été embauchée chez Mr. Curtis Haynes à Smitcoms. « Nous avons lancé Smitcoms en 2000 pour la première fois. Nous l’avons élevé comme si c’était notre bébé » dit-elle. Grisha a d’abord été assistante marketing puis directrice commerciale pendant ses huit années passées à Smitcoms, avant de devenir directrice marketing de la société. Elle a tout fait, depuis le lancement de nouveaux produits à la gestion ou à la commercialisation. Et Grisha a pris conscience, que le marketing c’était son dada.

Elle en a encore plus pris conscience lorsqu’elle a quitté son travail pour poursuivre ses études en Hollande.

Là-bas, elle a décroché son master en gestion internationale et lancé un magazine avec Chet Euton baptisé Boccafina. Ca a été le moment où elle est tombée amoureuse des médias et découvert qu’il fallait qu’elle continue dans cette voie qui lui sied à merveille.

Boccafina était son bébé.

Une fois ses études terminées, elle est retournée chez Smitcoms. Ensuite, en 2009, elle a senti que c’était le moment de se lancer seule. Elle a crée Montage en janvier 2009. « Montage, c’est un montage de plusieurs choses - évenementiel, médias, marketing et ventes – on touche à tout car je suis très polyvalente. Travailler à Smitcoms m’a vraiment appris à me diversifier » constate-t-elle.

risha Marten est une SaintMartinoise pur jus, même si les gens pensent souvent qu’elle est originaire de Curaçao. Elle laisse dire car elle a effectivement un peu de Curaçao en elle. Sa mère vient de Curaçao et son père d’Anguille, ce qui fait d’elle un pur mix Caribéen ! Elle a étudié la gestion des entreprises à l’Université de Sint Maarten où elle a obtenu un DEUG, avant de poursuivre ses études à Fort Lauderdale, où elle a décroché sa licence avec une spécialité en marketing. A ce moment-là de sa vie, Grisha ne savait toujours pas ce qu’elle voulait faire et déclare qu’elle n’a découvert sa voie que lorsqu’elle est rentrée à Sint Maarten.

de The Alley, avec en parallèle une compétition de danse, qui s’est achevée par un carton au Village. « C’était une nuit latino complètement différente de ce que le public avait l’habitude de voir. Les gens étaient très excités et ont vraiment appréciés, d’autant que les VIP de la soirée ont pu rencontrer les artistes comme Omega et Tito Nieves » explique Grisha Marten. Après cet énorme succès, de nombreuses sociétés ont signé chez Montage. L’une de ces collaborations les plus connues est celle avec l’opérateur de téléphonie UTS. Ils ont commencé à travailler ensemble sur la campagne Chipster pour Chippie et, ensemble, ont entrepris de cibler les abonnés de moins de 26 ans. « Ce qu’il y a de bien avec Chipster, c’est tous les rabais et les offres que les jeunes obtiennent lorsqu’ils souscrivent leur abonnement gratuit » explique Grisha. Le prochain grand événement sur le calendrier de Montage pour Chipster, c’est la soirée cinéma offerte autour de la saga Twilight. Seuls 200 jeunes y seront invités.

Grisha et sa sœur, font paraître une publication annuelle appelée Taste of

St.Maarten qui donne les caractéristiques des restaurants de Sint Maarten pour leur donner un petit coup de pouce.

Grisha a des tonnes d’événements complètement différents à son agenda, comme la journée annuelle de la mère et du père ou l’élection de la reine et du roi de Soualiga qu’elle organise depuis trois ans. La clientèle de Montage est impressionnante : Heineken, Divico, Hard Rock Café, UTS et l’Office de Tourisme de Sint Maarten pour ne citer que ceux là.

Cette année, elle a organisé une marche pour la Journée du tourisme à laquelle plus de 600 personnes ont participé, dansant derrière le groupe Happen So Massive.

Pour cette Journée, elle a organisé un show où les différentes cultures, musique et gastronomie étaient mises à l’honneur.

SSLINT est également un client récent et elle travaille avec lui sur le premier grand événement d’arts martiaux de l’île : «FIERCE AND FURIOUS». Autre excellente réalisation de Montage, le Boardwalk Fest. Le port vient de signer un accord avec TEMPO. Le port a toujours été un gros contributeur au Boardwalk Fest et a amené Tarrus Riley et Alaine à se produire sur scène. Sur la liste des spectacles figurent aussi trois groupes locaux et deux formations de danse de l’île, explique Grisha. Le Boardwalk Fest a été mis sur pied pour aider les restaurateurs à redynamiser le boardwalk. C’est aujourd’hui un événement majeur qui n’a pas fini de se développer.

Une journée dans la vie de Grisha, c’est une journée trépidante, d’autant qu’elle a aussi une famille dont elle doit s’occuper. Elle fait marcher son entreprise quand ses fils sont à l’école. « Je jongle avec différents projets tout le temps. loria Morales marche avec un grand sourire accroché à son beau visage. On ne pourrait jamais deviné combien la vie de cette femme est agitée à la voir aussi débordante d’énergie. D’origine Colombienne, Gloria a grandi à New York puis est allée à l’école en Floride. C’est pendant sa dernière année de lycée que son compagnon la demande en mariage et qu’elle décide de le suivre à Sint Maarten. Elle dirige West Indies Supplies. Une entreprise de vente en gros qui existe depuis plus de vingt ans.

Au comptoir, des médicaments comme de l’Advil mais aussi des marques comme Maybelline, Sally Hansen, ou encore John Frieda. La société a été rachetée à son propriétaire par sa belle-famille.

Quand elle est arrivée sur l’île, elle a d’abord commencé par travailler aux entrepôts. Peu à peu, elle s’est familiarisée avec le travail du quotidien pour s’orienter vers le management. Une journée type pour elle, commence à l’aube pour finir tard le soir. « J’ai un agenda complètement dingue, mais j’ai la chance de pouvoir compter sur Chris, mon responsable commercial, toujours à mes côtés. Il connaît le business sur le bout des doigts et il est aussi passionné que moi ».

Quand elle n’est pas occupée à travailler, elle passe du temps avec sa famille. Ses week-ends sont exclusivement dédiés à son mari et à sa fille. Les matinées sont dédiées aux différentes activités de sa fille, comme la natation ou la danse classique. Sharalee s’est également mise à la moto, qui est devenue une vraie passion, et elle adore conduire la Suzuki GSXR 1000 de son mari ! Le soir, le couple prend du temps pour sortir dîner ou danser. Leurs amis les ont surnommés « les mondains » et même si elle rêve de s’octroyer une journée rien qu’à elle pour se détendre, elle est et restera toujours une pile électrique ! Ce que vous voyez de cette femme magnifique à l’extérieur, c’est ce qu’elle est foncièrement.

Gloria fait extrêmement attention à ce que sa vie personnelle et professionnelle soit en parfait équilibre. « Avec mon mari, nous avons un fils, Anthony, qui est en Première. Notre fille Alexia nous occupe également beaucoup, entre l’école et ses cours de danse. J’essaie d’aller quatre fois par semaine à la gym et nous passons à table à 18 heures chaque soir ». Même si elle adore sortir le soir, Gloria reste très famille. Ses enfants sont toute sa vie. Ses sœurs sont ses partenaires de soirées. Elle vénère ses parents ; quant à son mari, il est aussi son meilleur ami. Une super woman n’est rien sans ceux qu’elle aime.

Une fois ses diplômes en poche, elle a décidé d’acquérir de l’expérience à New York. Elle a saisi l’opportunité d’apprendre le b.a.-ba de la vente au détail pendant deux ans comme stagiaire chez Kraft General Foods à Tarrytown. Elle a ensuite géré le bureau new-yorkais de l’Office de Tourisme de Sint Maarten pendant deux ans et demi avant de décider qu’il était temps pour elle de rentrer sur l’île.

hez Sharalee Lint-Beudeker, franc-parler et gentillesse vont de pair avec beauté et entrain : la directrice marketing de Divico, le deuxième plus grand vendeur en gros de Sint Maarten explique : « J’ai toujours été intéressée par le marketing et les horaires de bureau ne m’ont jamais séduites. J’aime aller de l’avant et l’interaction avec les gens ».

Représenter quelque 1800 produits de marques aussi célèbres que Del Monte, Revlon, Banana Boat, Spa, et le groupe Energizer pour ne citer que celles-là fait garder les pieds sur terre à cette jeune professionnelle. Même si tous ses efforts marketing ne sont pas uniquement dédiés qu’au commercial.

L’une des plus grandes œuvres de bienfaisance soutenue par Divico est le Walk-a-Thon contre le cancer du sein. « Nous soutenons les œuvres de bienfaisance et je donne un peu à chaque cause.

Je crois vraiment qu’il faut partager pour pouvoir aider tout le monde » déclare-t-elle.

Le week-end, elle prépare sa famille et passe la porte pour aller travailler. Et comme si cette femme n’était pas assez occupée, elle vient de monter sa propre société, SSLint N.V, avec son mari.

E

rica Fortuno entre dans le bureau, avec un look et un style époustouflant. Elle affiche un grand sourire, prête pour sa journée bien remplie. Erica est née et a grandi à Sint Maarten et elle a quitté l’île à l’âge de 17 ans pour poursuivre ses études à New York. Elle a vécu à Big Apple pendant onze ans. C’est là qu’elle a décroché ses masters de marketing et de gestion administrative.

A son retour, elle s’est aventurée dans une affaire en partenariat et lancé East Caribbean DMC—une société de management, marketing et relations publiques. Grâce à ses réseaux, elle a été présentée à John Leone de Heineken. Ils ont développé une relation amicale et elle a été introduite dans la famille ILTT (International Liquors and Tobacco).

Elle a accepté par la suite une place chez ILTT pour gérer le portefeuille de Diageo, le portefeuille haut de gamme des spiritueux. « Je dois dire que l’expérience acquise chez Kraft m’a facilité la tâche pour ce travail et que ça a été une belle expérience de travailler chez ILTT. J’ai vraiment adoré travailler avec l’équipe » déclare Erica.

Equilibrer vie professionnelle et vie personnelle a été un vrai challenge pour cette travailleuse acharnée, mais heureusement, son métier est basé sur les réseaux et les relations sociales, ce qui a facilité les choses. Quand on lui demande de quelle manière elle se projette dans l’avenir, elle dit qu’elle se voit avec des enfants, qu’elle rêve de fonder une famille. En surface, cette belle femme a l’air très timide mais elle est faite de plusieurs couches. « Beaucoup de gens pensent que je suis sans doute un peu coincée mais il m’arrive juste parfois d’être timide. Apprenez à me connaître, m’ouvrir aux autres me demande toujours un peu de temps ». lifestyle sxm

Qui est Saskia ?

Saskia est née au Suriname mais elle a grandi en Hollande depuis l’âge de huit ans. Ses racines et sa culture caribéennes ont toujours été entretenues par sa mère et sa grand-mère, qui disaient toujours « tu peux sortir la fille de la jungle, mais tu ne peux pas sortir la jungle de la fille ». Saskia croit que même si elle a passé la majeure partie de son existence en Europe, son héritage caribéen a toujours constitué la part vibrante et vivante de qui elle est. « J’ai toujours eu envie de la Caraïbe. C’est tellement différent, comparé aux grandes villes des USA ou d’Europe. Quand tu croises un inconnu dans la rue ici, il va toujours te saluer. Cette culture de la chaleur humaine donne une vie complètement à part, ici dans la Caraïbe ».

Saskia explique que lorsqu’elle est retournée aux Pays-Bas après un séjour dans la région en 2004, elle ne s’est plus sentie à sa place. La Caraïbe lui a terriblement manquée et elle a pris la décision de retourner s’y installer. Elle l’a fait en 2008 pour ne plus jamais repartir. Sa société Privilege PR, spécialisée dans la mode, la déco, l’accueil de voyages, comme son site Web myfashionlifestyle. com, est un outil pour promouvoir ses clients.

« Complètement d’accord » acquiesce la formatrice Catalina Ahlip-Georgescu, assise à côté de Michael. « La nourriture est sophistiquée bien que traditionnelle. Tout est d’un goût très raffiné et dîner au Temptation, c’est un peu comme participer à un banquet dans un château ». Le menu spécial qui sera servi en plus de la carte habituelle est composé de nombreux produits traditionnels servis pour Thanksgiving et Noël : dinde et potiron, canneberges et châtaignes, champignons et poires…le tout cuisiner de manière à faire vaciller vos papilles ! « Dino est un ami et un collègue » témoigne le restaurateur Leslie Martina qui entame le deuxième plat sur cette carte spéciale fêtes de fin d’année (raviolis de courges à la crème de noix et huile de truffe). « Il m’inspire, la combinaison de saveurs est stupéfiante et j’adore cette cuisine. Sans doute une complicité de Scorpions aux fourneaux ? » s’interroge-t-il en riant. « Moi aussi je veux devenir chef cuisinier » hasarde Destiny Jagtiani, la fille d’Arun, frère de Dino. « Je veux marcher dans les pas de mon oncle ». Pour une fillette de onze ans, Destiny a un palais étonnant. « Mon plat préféré sur le menu du Temptation, est le thon épicé saignant ; et j’adore le pilon de dinde rôtie au soja et gingembre avec le pudding aux champignons sauvages et canneberges avec son chutney de pommes » confie-t-elle d’un air gourmand. La dinde bien-aimée de Destiny a été suivie par des haricots verts aux amandes grillées et un dessert de potiron panna cotta aux baies puis des churros.

Le dîner a fait l’unanimité des convives, qui se sont tous extasiés sur l’excellence de la cuisine, sans pouvoir se mettre d’accord sur leur plat préféré parmi les cinq au menu. « Le dinde, le pudding, le fromage de chèvre, le dessert : tout était exquis” résume l’un des convives, le kinésithérapeute Timothy Ahlip.

Le Temptation prend également les réservations pour les entreprises qui souhaitent célébrer les fêtes de fin d’année en dégustant ce menu spécial. « Tout possible ici » dit Jagtiani, radieux. « Dîner avec de la musique, de la danse, un pianiste, un DJ, dans l’une de nos deux salles, le Temptation ou le Rare. Beignets au fromage de chèvre aux poires pochées au vin rouge et miel de romarin

Pour 6 personnes

BEIGNETS AU FROMAGE DE CHEVRE 500 g de fromage de chèvre, farine, œufs , Panko (chapelure japonaise) En utilisant la même technique que celle utilisée pour les boulettes de viande, rouler le fromage de chèvre en forme de boulettes. Astuce : humidifier les mains pour que le fromage ne colle pas aux doigts. Disposer la farine, les œufs et la chapelure dans trois récipients séparés, puis suivre la procédure standard de panure. Tremper d’abord les boulettes dans la farine, puis les œufs, puis le Panko. Faire frire les boulettes dans une huile à 180 degrés pendant 1 minute jusqu’à obtenir une coloration dorée et servir de suite.

POIRES POCHEES AU VIN ROUGE 2 poires par personne, pelées et coupées en 6 quartiers, ½ bouteille de vin rouge, ½ tasse de sucre, ½ tasse de miel, 1 bâton de cannelle par personne, le jus d’une orange part personne, ½ tasse de vinaigre balsamique, 5 fleurs d’anis, 2 tiges de romarin frais (garder quelques feuilles pour la garniture) Placer tous les ingrédients dans une casserole, porter à ébullition, puis baisser le feu pour laisser mijoter, et pocher les poires jusqu’à tendreté.

Retirer les poires, laissez la sauce réduire jusqu’à obtenir la consistance d’un sirop. Servir les beignets au fromage de chèvre dans un petit bol, et placer 2 tranches de poires au centre. Verser un peu de sirop dessus, et garnir avec le romarin.

Raviolis de courge musquée à la crème de noix et huile de truffe

Pour 6 personnes

1 courge musquée pelée, coupée en dés moyens, 1 cuillère à soupe de beurre, 1 tasse de ricotta, ¼ tasse de parmesan râpé (bonne qualité), 2 cuillères à soupe de thym frais cueilli à partir des tiges, ½ cuillère à café de muscade fraîchement râpée, sel, poivre, sucre au besoin, 18 feuilles wonton œufs, farine de maïs Préparer la farce: mettre la courge musquée dans un plat à rôtir avec juste quelques gouttes d’eau et le beurre pour cuire la courge à la vapeur et la faire rôtir à la fois. Couvrir de papier alu et enfourner à 200 degrés pendant 20 à 30 minutes jusqu’à tendreté. Ôter le papier alu du plat pendant les 5 dernières minutes, mais en faisant attention à ne pas laisser les courges brûler. Laisser la courge refroidir dans le mélange. Puis écraser le avec une fourchette. Cette purée doit avoir la consistance d’une purée de pommes de terre. Puis incorporer la ricotta, et ajouter le parmesan et les assaisonnements. Réserver. La farce en extra pourra servir à l’élaboration d’un autre plat ou de raviolis supplémentaire. Étaler les feuilles wonton et placer environ une cuillère à café de farce au centre de chaque feuille. Badigeonner les 4 côtés très légèrement avec une dorure à l’œuf, puis replier chaque ravioli en deux pour former un triangle, et presser les bords pour bien les fermer.

Saupoudrer de la farine de maïs sur une plaque, placer les raviolis et mettre au frigo jusqu’au moment de servir.

CREME DE NOIX 2 tasses de crème épaisse, ½ tasse de bouillon de poulet, 1 tasse de noix grillées, plus ¼ de tasse supplémentaire pour garnir, ½ tasse de persil, 1 gousse d’ail sel et poivre Porter tous les ingrédients à ébullition, puis mélanger. Réserver jusqu’au moment de servir.

Pour servir. Faire bouillir les raviolis dans une eau légèrement salée pendant 2 minutes. Réchauffer la sauce à la crème de noix dans une poêle puis jeter les raviolis dans la casserole de sauce, servir 3 pièces par personne, dans un joli bol à pâtes, et garnir avec du basilic frais, du parmesan, quelques noix concassées et un filet d’huile de truffe.

Haricots verts aux amandes grillées.

Pour 6 personnes

250 g de haricots verts, Huile d’olive, beurre, 1 cuillère à soupe d’échalotes (hachées), 1 cuillère à soupe de miel, 1 cuillère à café de vinaigre, sel et poivre amandes effilées grillées.

Mettre une poêle sur feu vif, ajouter l’huile d’olive, le beurre, les échalotes et faire revenir jusqu’à ce que le tout commence à caraméliser, ajouter le miel et le vinaigre, puis les haricots verts, et remuer. Assaisonner avec le sel, le poivre et saupoudrer d’amandes grillées. Servez ce plat comme accompagnement des repas des Fêtes. lifestyle sxm
