KIM + TOM FESTIVAL OF LOVE

GT BRIDE — 39

LOVE STORY The natural magic of a rural property near Lorne set the tone for Kim Scott’s dream wedding to Tom Lonergan. Like the couple, the celebration of their love was relaxed with a focus on having fun in the native setting. A cool botanical colour palette of white, grey and green was used throughout the ceremony and reception, complemented by silver lanterns and candles for warmth. Hay bale seats were covered with blankets and the marquee was clear to provide uninterrupted views of the enchanting landscape. “Tommy and I are pretty laid-back people and we wanted our wedding to reflect this,” says Kim, who credits Weddings of Desire stylist Laura Harvey for capturing the organic vision. “The property is just so naturally beautiful, we didn’t want to deviate too far away from this raw magic.” Kim was teaching in a remote Northern Territory community in 2009 when by chance Tom, a

Geelong premiership footballer, volunteered at the school. She moved to be by his side three months later. Now a dietitian, Kim made an elegant entrance to their January 31, 2016 union as she walked down the aisle to Paul Kelly’s When I first met your ma. “The dress was a classic design with a little modern edginess to it,” she says of the Houghton gown. “It was something completely different to what I had envisioned.” For dinner, the newlyweds sat among the 160 guests. There was purposely no separate table for the bridal party. Plates of steak, salmon, roast potatoes and salads were passed around – again to encourage interaction. A Pimms cocktail station and boutique coffee van serving espresso martinis and hot donuts completed the sumptuous occasion. continued on next page >

Later, Tom and Kim were hoisted into the air during a rendition of American Pie. “Tommy’s brother started jumping while I was on his shoulders and I had to limbo under a chandelier,” Kim says, smiling. The festivity was given more character after some minor mishaps, like the beer being put in a freezer and the bride’s shoe getting stuck in the veranda.

Tom, dizzy from a happy ambush of well-wishes after the ceremony, accidentally kissed a mate on the cheek as thanks. “Even when things don’t go to plan, that’s where all the good stories come from,” Kim says. “If it’s not funny then, you will laugh at some point.” A couple of weeks after the wedding, the Lonergans announced they were expecting their first child. “I was 10-weeks pregnant and not many people knew,” Kim says. “We love knowing that our little one was with us on our special day.”

of recent years, it was only fitting that eventually the neckline would take the plunge - excuse the pun - and follow suit. This season we see jaw droppingly low necklines and deep vees featuring heavily on the runway. And while this look won’t be for everyone, when done right and in a tasteful manner, this design element can take a long sleeve demure gown into a modern sexy place. Just remember, it’s your wedding day, we want to keep it classy. The overlay We’ve seen the celebs donning it on the red carpet in the form of a cape, a train, or a top layer of tulle, lace or organza. The additional layer of fabric can give any gown wow factor and have brides looking angelic as they walk down the aisle. A perfect way to amp up even the most basic gown in a cost-effective way, l LOVE this trend.

Sheer There is a fresh spin on this recurring trend which isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Think lingerie-inspired looks with sheer lace panels and cutouts, delicate sheer fabrications overlapping silky slip gowns and nakedlooking gossamer illusion mesh on necklines bodices and sleeves. Perfect proof that sometimes less is definitely more. Whether you’re a modern, classic, romantic, vintage, bohemian, traditional, untraditional or fashion-forward bride-to-be, 2016 brings an abundance of options and an array of inspiration for those about to head down the aisle, to seamlessly find or create their dream wedding dress. And when planning a wedding, once the dream dress is ticked off, everything else is just icing on that big-tiered delicious vanilla cream centred wedding cake, right?

The Landron Dress by Soho Bride has an overlay to make you look heaven-sent.

LOVE LETTERS Capture the imagination of guests with personalised wedding stationery reflective of your special day. Working with a designer, these invitations and placecards will be treasured keepsakes long after you say ‘I do’

Spreading the word about your pending nuptials starts with stationery. Upon opening a save-the-date card or official invitiation, guests get a sneak peek of colours and decorations likely to reappear on the day. To make a lasting first impression, stationery artist Chloe Kirkovski of Pretty in Paper suggests taking the effort to send beautifully-crafted keepsakes. “Your wedding stationery is almost like the introduction to your wedding,” she explains. “It should be something that reflects the couple’s style and is exciting to open up and discover.” When settling on the perfect paper, start with the theme of your wedding. It might be rustic, modern, botanical or traditional, for example. Then, check your budget. How much have you allocated for stationery? Chloe says it’s helpful to disclose this figure to your designer so the best options or package can be presented. “It’s also good to consider 48 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

how much time you will need to have your stationery made up,” she adds. “It’s always handy to set a tentative date in your head of when you would like to have your invitations out and work back from that.” There are two main options when it comes to choosing a design. Existing pieces have the benefit of convenience. There are various shapes, colours and patterns ready to be personalised with your special date. Think watercolour blooms, romantic typography, strikingly simple prints or inky flecks. Ensure the design stands out would be able to get your message across. Picture your guests’ reactions when opening these invitations. Would they be overjoyed and excited about the date ahead? They are the emotions you’re after. If the wedding has a unique theme, it might be worth funding a one-off design specific to the occasion. In this instance, remember to allow extra time for the artist to work their magic. “Custom designs will usually take a little

longer,” Chloe explains. Whichever way you choose, make sure to enter the process with an idea or style preference. Save screenshots of eye-catching examples online or keep cut-outs of inspiration in a scrapbook. The better you can communicate your vision to the designer, the better the stationery will represent your personalities and special union. Beyond invitations, stationery can provide a consistent link at the ceremony and reception in the form of welcome boards, programs, seating charts, place cards and bonbonnieres. “Even after the big day it’s very common for couples to come back and order thank-you cards in the same theme,” Chloe says. Ultimately, it is stationery that ensures a union will be celebrated with a bevy of loved ones. “If there are no invitations there are no guests,” Chloe says. “So it’s important not to leave this to the last minute.”

MAKE IT PERSONAL The wedding dress is a source of lots of interest on the wedding day but, as fashion stylist Renée Enright advises, it pays not to get caught up in what others might want you to wear. Staying true to your own style and what suits you best is the only way to go I remember the comments starting not long after I became engaged, “ooo I can’t wait to see the dress you’ll wear” and, as the wedding day neared the comments kept coming, “I am so excited to see your dress”. I started feeling immense pressure that my dress had to be THE most amazing thing anyone had ever seen. Why were people so fixated on my dress? The truth is it wasn’t just my dress. There is so much emphasis these days on every bride’s dress, her hair, her make-up – every last detail of her complete look that it can leave any brideto-be embarking on their dress journey feeling completely and utterly overwhelmed. I was that bride who knew exactly what kind of look I wanted right from the get-go simple, effortless and relaxed, a gown that wasn’t too bridey bride. But I found myself second-guessing my own style and vision, feeling I would let down people’s expectations of what THEY thought I should be wearing on my special day. With so many other decisions hanging over 50 50 —— GTBRIDE.COM.AU GTBRIDE.COM.AU

your head when planning a wedding – from venue, to food, entertainment and don’t forget the dreaded guest list (you know how it goes, mum wants to invite her third cousin’s next door neighbour that you’ve never met. Beware, it’s a real thing!) – the last thing any soon-to-be bride needs is extra stress and uncertainty about something that’s supposed to be so exciting. Staying true to your own style and vision and not being swayed by opinions, comments or even trends is so important when embarking on your wedding dress journey. Trends are a great source of inspiration but don’t be defined by them (and yes, that’s coming from a stylist!). Knowing your body and what works best for your shape are the most important tools when dressing for any occasion, especially your wedding. The best way to filter down that scrapbook of magazine cut outs you’ve been collecting of your dream dress is to try on, try on, try on. You’ll hear about it time and time again, the girl who wanted the big ball skirt traditional wedding gown UNTIL she saw it on herself

and felt like a cream puff, instead opting for a sleek fit and flare style gown that she had never even imagined herself in. A great and popular way to try on those different styles is to make a fun girls day out, visiting bridal boutiques with your posse to determine what silhouette works best for you. (That is YOU, not your besty, or your mum or the bridal sales person). You want to be, feel and look like yourself on what is such a magical and special day in your life. If you’ve never been one to wear your hair up or normally steer clear of make-up, perhaps your wedding day isn’t the time to experiment with a sleek bun or black smokey eyes, instead aim to create a more refined polished version of your everyday look. Be you, stay true to yourself, your own personal style and your own vision. When we feel great about ourselves it shines through and a confident, comfortable (depending on just how tight that dress is) bride is a happy bride.

LAUREN + MATT SPECIAL UNION

DATE TO REMEMBER Lauren Broughton and Matthew Foss were so humbled by the words of affection and approval at their wedding that the precious speeches remain their favourite memories of November 21, 2015. “Everyone remembers the vibe of the day, how much they laughed or smiled and how two families came together and melded into one,” Matt says. With a shared love of the outdoors, Lauren fittingly proposed to Matt after a long day of snowboarding in New Zealand. “We are each other’s best friend, we can talk for hours or sit in silence and still feel comfortable in the moment,” he says.

CHELSEA + TRENT HOME BEAUTIFUL

DATE TO REMEMBER Trent Bevan sat content in his backyard with new wife Chelsea Shawcross in one arm and their baby son in the other, as 120 guests celebrated around them. “This was the moment,” he says of the big day on March 7, 2015. The couple, who met at church, wed at their home under an old oak tree. They handmade 15 tables and used a World War II cargo drop parachute decorated with fairy lights as a canopy. “Being held by the man I love and can keep forever, swaying gently to a beautiful song our good friend was singing - there could be nothing better,” Chelsea remembers of the first dance.

PUT A RING ON IT Choosing the right engagement ring, wedding band and eternity ring can be overwhelming. The selection should be all about a perfect match between style and function

Committing to the ring is up there with committing to your partner, both will be a part of you until death do you part. So how do you choose the perfect bling? Sandra McGill, one half of the husband and wife duo at McGill’s Jewellers, says there are many things to consider before choosing the right rings. “An engagement ring is purchased with love, and thoughts that it will be worn every day forever,” she says. She outlines three main points to choosing the perfect engagement ring. “Her lifestyle, that is, her work, her sports, and her hobbies — choosing a ring that suits her everyday life is important,” she says. “Her style, classical or flamboyant, earthy or vintage, feminine or edgy – there is a perfect style for everyone. “Your budget, set a price range – there is a ring for every budget.” A wedding ring is an easier choice. “It needs to match and complement your engagement ring,” Sandra says.

58 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

“It needs to fit properly to protect your settings of the first ring. “Whether you want a traditional, diamond or something a little unique, the ring again must fit into lifestyle and compatibility with your engagement ring.” You have the engagement ring and the wedding band, but when do you complete the set? Sandra says there are many different thoughts about when to add an eternity ring or an anniversary ring to your finger. “After 10 years of marriage, at the birth of the first child or a key moment in life are popular choices for giving an eternity ring,” she says. “In the modern day the anniversary ring is given on significant wedding anniversaries.” She says when choosing the ring in question, there are no hard or fast rules. “Make sure it fits without rubbing or damaging the ring it will sit next to,” she says. “On many occasions, an eternity or anniversary ring is worn on the opposite hand

for comfort, so the choices are endless.” Ensuring your hand hardware sparkles just as well as the day of the proposal takes a bit of maintenance. “The safety of the settings holding your precious gems is critical,” Sandra says. “Whether you have claw set or bezel set, it is important to have your rings checked at least yearly. “Choose a date, for example – your anniversary, this will ensure that your rings stay in top condition.” Sandra says you can further preserve your bands by taking your rings off before beginning any hard tasks with your hands including housework, yard work and any work that involves chemicals or rough equipment. “Clean your ring in hot water and mild detergent regularly to keep it sparkling and removing the grime and dirt that collects,” she says. Following this guide can ensure your carefully chosen rings sparkle on the big day and beyond.

FINER DETAILS With a little bit of planning and delegation, smart pre-nuptials organisation can result in a seamless celebration of love on the big day

For most newly-engaged couples, the chapter post-proposal is an organisational marathon. The ring is on the finger, now it’s time to put on your planning hats. By the big day you will be a master of event management. But it will all be worth it. The effort spent booking suppliers and ticking boxes will return tenfold in carefree joy when vows are exchanged, knowing everything has fallen into place perfectly. Trust us, lists are your friend. So here’s a handy one to start you off. Good luck! Check mate Get an exercise book or folder and contain all notes, ideas, receipts and inspiration to it.

There are also some sweet wedding planner apps to get you on track. Budget Be honest about what you can afford. Think about what means most to you, for example great photos, a foodie feast or extravagant venue - and prioritise those. Accept help from creative family and friends for DIY projects of love. Guest list With the budget in mind, write a list of guests in order of priority and importance. This task must be completed together. Be flexible when RSVPs are returned. Theme Set the tone of the occasion and stick to it. Perhaps it is rustic, beachy or traditional. Choose one and link it through the entire celebration. Professionals, such as wedding stylists and prop hire services, can help here. Location Jump in the car and search for a location together to suit you and the number of guests. Or, as some of this year’s featured couples have, look in your own backyard. Compare quotes, check out photos of past events and factor in additional costs such as cake cutting, sound equipment and dancefloor hire. Have a Plan B Rain might be symbolic of luck but it can put a

dampener on outdoor weddings. Consider having a small marquee or hall on standby. It’s a date The availability of your preferred venue will probably dictate this. Be flexible and consider weather and holiday periods. Moody offseason winter weddings are becoming more popular but can still come with a cheaper price tag. Ask loved ones to “save the date” to avoid disappointment.

Capture that In the age of social media, you probably already have your favourite photographer and videographer in mind. Put this at the top of your to-do list. Engagement shoots can help to build rapport with whomever you choose. Bridal party Go with your heart and choose one or a few closest to you. Remember important people in your life can be included in other ways, such as playing music, reading a poem or emceeing.

JO + BEN LOCAL TREASURES

68 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER The organic nuptials of Josephine Harris and Ben Long was a beautiful triumph of the Geelong region’s talented makers and producers. “We met all the growers at the wineries and hand selected what we served on the night,” says Jo, who married Ben on May 23, 2015. The bride’s gown was purposely casual and custom made by a nearby designer. “It was perfect and stuck with our keep-it-local theme,” she says.

GT BRIDE — 69

LOVE STORY Jo and Ben practiced their first dance under gumtrees illuminated by festoon lighting while 150 guests waited excitedly inside. The Geelong West pair styled the occasion to reflect their respective farm and coastal upbringings, crafting personal pieces such as candles, signs, jars of honey, bouquets and table settings. “Lots of messy and fun times were had in the backyard with records playing in the background,” Jo remembers. Ben, who loves his wife’s smile and adventurous spirit, credits her creative vision for the celebration. “She deserves most of the credit for how successfully the day played out,” he says. “I’m constantly reminded of how lucky I am.”

CELEBRATE IN STYLE A wedding stylist is well worth the investment as they will embrace your vision to create the grand occasion of your dreams and, just as importantly, free up your precious time

Styling: Weddings of Desire. Photography: Alison Mayfield Photography and Nikole Ramsay Photography (bottom left).

Share your dream wedding vision with a professional stylist and let them take care of the rest, while you concentrate on celebrating the day stress-free. A stylist’s main objective is to have happy clients, who can relax and feel confident the occasion will reflect their personalities. Savvy planners have become a vital asset for many weddings as they save the couple valuable time from running around to meetings, locations and sourcing products. Laura Harvey, from Weddings of Desire, recommends brides start planning their weddings at least 12 months in advance. She likes to have all major vendors booked in early as the good ones go quick. “An experienced planner or stylist should be able to give you a guide to your budget allocation by just looking at the venue, guest numbers and general information provided by the client,” Laura explains. “I always tell my clients they should be realistic about the budget and what they can get for their money. I never want clients to spend more than they have allocated. 72 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU 72 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

“It’s about working out the important styling or planning elements and making them be the feature.” She says hiring a stylist takes the stress away from the bride-to-be. Stylists should be able to create something magical and organise a well-planned event. When it comes to the logistics, they will know timelines and deadlines, and how to choose the vendors that will best suit. “My clients can contact me whenever they like. I often have messages on my phone at midnight and emails most days. It’s not only about providing a great styled event, it’s about being able to keep your clients calm and them knowing you are able to accommodate their needs,” Laura admits. “Having been in that situation myself, I know a lot of brides sit there thinking about things. If they can send a quick text or email, or even have a chat, it keeps them calm and they know someone else will take care of the situation or even give them guidance.” Laura says she has non-stop emails from vendors and phone calls that her clients don’t

need to know about it. A stylist should be able to save you money as well as time and let you enjoy the process. They should be upfront with fees and budget – so there are no hidden surprises – and should also be able to come up with cost-effective concepts. Couples can expect to pay between $3000 to $10,000 for a qualified stylist. Pricing varies depending on location and the logistics of a wedding. Laura says you really do get what you pay for – just like a highly qualified florist, photographer and catering company, you are paying for experience, knowledge and quality. “A stylist is exactly the same, do your research and know the background of the stylist. I always suggest a phone call with potential clients as I feel they have so many questions and, on my behalf, I would expect to be able to answer them all,” she says. “Don’t feel bad about asking questions, getting information and expecting a high level of service. “You are paying someone to create your dream day so be honest with what you love and dislike, especially with the styling details.”

PICTURE PERFECT Choosing who will capture your day is a big decision and one you will need to make early. Here are some things to ponder before snapping up your wedding photographer Embarking on the search for a wedding photographer, couples must ask themselves which is more important, budget or style? There are hundreds of photographers in the region and each has their own unique approach to how they will shoot the day. So finding the right one may take time. Louisa Jones has been photographing weddings in the Geelong area for eight years and she says when it comes to choosing a photographer, technique and experience should be a higher priority over cost. “When you look back at your images are you going to be happy with the photos because they were in a style that you love, or are you going to be happy because they were cheap?” she asks. “Another thought, does the style and your budget balance out – is your photography budget a healthy percentage of your overall wedding expense?” Louisa says it is important think about how much is being spent on the venue, food and 74 74 —— GTBRIDE.COM.AU GTBRIDE.COM.AU

décor, then how the photography should reflect that. If thousands are being spent on the rest of the wedding the cost of the photos should not be compromised. The next thing to consider would be how comfortable you feel around the person. He or she will be around for most of the day, and a large amount of time should be spent together planning timelines in the lead up to the day. “Make sure you’re comfortable with them, if you’re uncomfortable, that’s not going to be a great start to the day and it’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life,” Louisa says. “Once you are happy with the photographer you’ve chosen, do understand that a deposit is needed to retain the date. This is so that no other couple books before you’re ready. “I would actually say, don’t start looking for a photographer unless you have a deposit ready to pay.” Try to prepare as far in advance as possible and be flexible on dates, one of the toughest

tasks will be getting all of your preferred suppliers to line up. Timelines will need to be established prior to the day, some photographers may have a minimum and maximum coverage time. The length of coverage will need to be arranged early. “I’m happy to either do a two hour wedding or an all-day wedding,” Louisa says. “For example, I photographed a sunrise wedding a few weeks ago and three hours was enough to cover the ceremony, bridal party photos and an intro to the reception – a champagne breakfast.” You should not need to hand a professional a checklist, but if specific photos of family are required Louisa suggests handing over a detailed note including the names. “I do recommend a list during this time just so you don’t miss anyone,” she explains. “It’s very helpful as we are not always going to know who the family is for extended photos.”

ANYA + TOM LOVE WILL TRAVEL

DATE TO REMEMBER There was a worldly flavour to the nuptials of Anya Vickers and Tom White on December 22, 2015. They met on the island of Bermuda, he proposed in Paris and she searched for her dress in the UK. The couple wed on a Tuesday. “We make each other better people, every moment together is a blessing,” Anya says. During speeches, the best man surprised the newlyweds with a pop quiz about their relationship. “The whole day was better than either of us imagined,” she says. “Being able to share it all with our family and friends, especially given the effort people made to attend, was incredible.”

But what else can you do to ensure you look and feel amazing on your wedding day? We have sourced the newest and most popular beauty treatment trends available in the Geelong region. Clear and brilliant skin Vitality Medispa owner and dermal therapist Annette Harman says her spa’s Clear and Brilliant treatment improves skin tone, texture and radiance, reduces the appearance of pores and renews soft and smooth skin texture for naturally radiant and glowing skin.

Annette says the fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment is the only one of its kind in the Geelong area. “It’s all about boosting collagen, plumping the skin and reducing pores,” she says. “It refreshes the skin.” Annette says the medical treatment was comfortable without the downtime many other laser treatments have. “You will feel sunburnt for four to six hours and there will be some redness,” she says. Feather brow tattooing Beauty precision owner Alanna Reinert says eyebrow tattooing has been revolutionised with

this procedure, which creates a very natural look. The semi-permanent procedure looks natural and can provide a strong eyebrow game for a bride-to-be. “Brides all want those perfect brows on the day,” she says. Lash lifting A lash lift defines, curls and enhances your natural lashes for up to eight weeks depending on your natural lash cycle. Alanna says the treatment is an alternative to eyelash extensions, which uses silicone pads to lift the lashes to create a subtle curve.

“So your lashes are flawless for the wedding and the honeymoon,” she says. Skin DNA This concept involves a DNA swab being sent off to a lab to get a personalised skin analysis to determine a tailor-made skincare routine. Alanna recommends brides do the Skin DNA test six to 12 months before the wedding Teeth whitening A white wedding can be more than just the dress. Alanna says Beauty Precision offers a teeth whitening treatment which does the job without the harsh peroxide. Going deeper Body Recon cosmetic clinic manager Adele Bartram Goodall says its most popular bridal prep is skin treatments and injectables. “However, we have seen a large rise in laser tattoo removal and even breast enlargement and face surgery such as rhinoplasty,” she says. “This isn’t limited to just brides, often it’s an excuse for the rest of the family including the mother-of-the-bride or groom, father-of-thebride or groom or even the groom himself to ‘tweak’ things they may of always wanted done.” Adele advises anyone interested in cosmetic work to plan well in advance. “Ideally the longer prep, the better it will be,” she says.

Skin rejuvenation Making your skin look fresh is not a new idea, however, the way it can be done has never been more effective. Australian Skin, Face and Body dermal clinician Fiona Priddle says mixing medicine with a skin treatment can get better results. “In the practice we have a GP and a plastic surgeon attached so we can offer the latest in all treatments,” she says. She says brides are opting for skin peels, LED treatments and laser treatments to combat skin redness and pigmentation. Fiona says brides should come in between six to 12 months of their wedding day for the best results She says after a one-on-one consultation, a treatment plan is laid out for the bride-to-be, with generally one treatment each month. Laser hair removal This hair reduction treatment is an investment for the long term. Fiona says although it isn’t new, laser hair removal treatment has become more popular than ever. “Because laser is a permanent reduction, a bride’s skin is smoother on the day, with less chance of break-outs or ingrown hairs,” she says. She says face and underarm treatments are the most popular with brides.

THE RIGHT FIT Guys are more fashion savvy than ever before when it comes to looking the part on their wedding day. We take a look at the current and upcoming trends for the boys When it comes to dressing for the big day it is easy for the bride-to-be to get caught up in the limelight, but it is vital she doesn’t leave behind what is most important to her in the fashion stakes. Thanks to social media, grooms now more than ever have to be on their a-game when it comes to nuptials attire. They want to ensure they are looking like the best versions of themselves as they enter their new lives as husbands. Cameron Brown from Brown’s Mensland says that grooms first and foremost need to adapt their clothing to suit the style of the wedding. This past year has seen plenty of outdoor weddings with grooms opting to mix colours, shades and textures. “Last season we saw a lot of separates like a navy blazer with khaki chinos or charcoal jackets with grey trousers,” Cameron says. “I think we’ll still see some through this season with more colours coming through as more options become available. “Some will no doubt stick with the timeless elegance of simplicity but will possibly opt for a point of difference in a double breasted jacket or vest.” 86 86——GTBRIDE.COM.AU GTBRIDE.COM.AU

The slim look is expected to last a few more seasons and Cameron recommends that grooms start shopping for their suits early on in the planning process. It is key to keep in mind the groomsmen’s height and size when finding a selection that will flatter the whole tribe. When it comes to bottoms a shorter length is generally the way to go. “The current market is adapting to gents showing a little bit of ankle or sock with a slip on shoe,” he says. “We’re also seeing shorter jacket lengths and cut away collar shirts usually matched with a slim neck tie and in some cases a bow, although they are usually matched with a regular peak collar.” Cameron predicts that next season will see the introduction of some more classical styles. For some time now the formal events have been slightly dressed down, he sees it as a natural progression for people to start dressing it back up again. “In general I believe that more people will opt for fancier wedding attire this season,” Cameron says. “Lots of tuxedos featuring contrast satin lapels and trim.”

Something else to watch out for this season is the emergence of custom made suiting now available locally. Previously you had to fly to Asia to get a custom made suit without spending thousands but with the advancements in technology consumers can design their own suit from the comfort of their own homes. Bellington Estate is a new service started by Geelong local Adam Archer. The service allows customers to order their own custom creations from a website – there is a step-by-step video to guide you through the measuring and ordering process – with suits generally ready within 30 days. So many designs are now available and people are finally able to get that one-of-akind special garment for their wedding day. One thing most tailors and fashion experts can agree on is the importance of the perfect fit. “Regardless of season fit will never go out of style, my one recommendation to wedding parties out there is to invest in alterations if required,” Cameron stresses. “It’s rare that someone will be fit beautifully off the rack and that little bit of tailoring can make all the difference.”

FIONA + DARCY NEW TRADITION

DATE TO REMEMBER Fiona Gregoriou was blessed by her grandfather before marrying Darcy Brown at the first Greek Orthodox Church built in East Melbourne. “It is a Greek tradition and was very emotional and very beautiful,” she remembers of February 12, 2016. The bride, wearing a custom-made dress, was flanked by brother Alex at the ceremony. “He was the greatest brides-man anyone had ever seen,” she says. Towards the end of the love-filled celebration, the newlyweds and 135 guests joined in smashing plates and dancing. “We are complete opposite personalities but seem to be a perfect mix,” Fiona says.

SHARE THE FARE After the formalities are complete, it’s time to celebrate the special union with an opulent feast of love. Many couples are opting for casual grazing tables and indulgent spreads to encourage mingling

Sharing your first feast as husband and wife should be an indulgent experience for the senses. For guests it is also a chance to toast the occasion with beautiful fresh food and drink. Sumptuous catering operator Andrea Orchard of Annie’s Kitchen has noticed a shift from sit-down three-course dinners to grazing platters and self-serve spreads which encourage interaction. “Food is a celebration in itself and brings people together,” she says. “Being of Italian heritage - hence food obsessed - I consider it to be of the highest priority on the day. Everything else can be perfect but if the food falls short that’s what everyone tends to remember and talk about.” When constructing a menu, couples should start by listing their personal favourites. After all, the big day is a reflection of you. “It is so important to bring all elements of who you both are,” Andrea explains. To ensure the food offering is to your taste, open communication is a must. 96 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

Andrea says her job is to grasp the character of the couple and design a menu to suit. “Our role as the supplier is to listen and communicate freely to get a result that will have them smiling for a long time to come,” she says. “So many people nowadays have such a broad knowledge of food so it’s our job to execute and guide them through their vision.” The theme and venue of a wedding generally dictates the fare. For example, traditional nuptials tend to go hand in hand with formal banquets. Some venues offer familiar alternate drop dishes. Rustic unions can have more of a casual vibe, with guests encouraged to eat as they please and move around to load up their plates. One thing is for certain, you can’t go wrong with easy-eating canapes. “The joy on people’s faces when canapes are handed around is priceless,” Andrea says. “A glass of bubbles in one hand and a canape in the other while talking with friends is perfect. Guests always feel special when bite size morsels are on offer.”

The presentation of the dinner table is also important. Think pretty place cards, bright blooms and themed centrepieces. “I cannot stress enough to couples to just enjoy their day,” Andrea says. “It comes and goes so quickly. Family and friends will love whatever food they choose.” The drinks selection should also have several options to accommodate all thirsts. Consider local winemakers and brewers or perhaps create a custom cocktail for the night. Pop-up espresso martini vans have been a recent hit. “Trends certainly do come and go and in my 25 years’ experience I have seen it all,” Andrea says. “However, these days it is pleasing to see most couples doing what is right for them rather than what’s on trend.” Beyond the wedding day feast, some newlyweds like to extend the official program to include a recovery lunch the day after. Pre-wedding dinners are also popular. “That’s what food is all about, an experience,” Andrea says.

Set within the historic Werribee Park Mansion only 30 minutes from Melbourne, The Refectory is nestled in 10 acres of formal gardens and rolling lawns surrounding the grand 1870s Mansion. Host your garden wedding ceremony in the stunning grounds, enjoy pre-dinner drinks and canapĂŠs overlooking the stately Mansion and then move inside for your beautiful celebration.

Remember when one of the best parts of a birthday party as a child was the games? Bring that fun into your wedding by incorporating fun activities into the festivities

Photography (clockwise from left): Smitten Wedding Photography; Wolf in Boots Photography; One Day Your Way; iStock; Smitten Wedding Photography

Gone are the days where music is the only way you can entertain your guests. Weddings have become more interactive as couples commit to ensuring their guests have plenty to do after the ceremony is over. A set up of fun activities post-wedding is a great way to keep your guests entertained, especially when you are tied up with other responsibilities such as getting your wedding photos taken. It’s also a great way to get your guests to mingle. If you are crafty, many post-wedding games can be put together yourself prior to the wedding festivities. However, there are many games that can be bought all ready to go.

on-one or in teams – a perfect way for your guests to bond.

Bocce Not just a game for seniors, bocce is a great way to get your guests up and moving. Bocce requires people to bowl a ball towards a smaller ball, called the jack. Whoever can bowl closest to the jack wins. The game can be played one-

Giant board games Games that have been minimalised and thrust into the 21st century onto smart phones in recent years into phenomenons like Words With Friends can go the other way, in a big way. Keeping on the big game theme, create a

Croquet Another game designed to get your guests outdoors, croquet involves hitting plastic or wooden balls with a mallet through hoops embedded in grass. Make the course as easy or a tricky as you like. Ring toss Ask your guests to quite literally put a ring on it with a game of ring toss. The game is a simple test of skill where rings or horseshoes are thrown with the aim of them wrapping around a peg. Encourage people to form teams so they can mingle.

giant checkers, chess, or if you are really ambitious, a Scrabble board to place on the lawn. These are something traditional that people of all ages can enjoy. Giant Jenga Jenga is a simple game that can result in a lot of laughs. During the game, players take turns removing one block at a time from a tower constructed of 54 blocks. Each block removed is then balanced on top of the tower, creating a progressively taller but less stable structure until the stack eventually topples. Ensure your guests get out of the way quick smart when this happens! Wedding bingo or I spy If you don’t have the space for elaborate outdoor games, something simple like wedding bingo or wedding I spy is another way to keep guests entertained. Fill the squares on the grid with fun things to look out for like when someone makes a speech or when the bride and groom share a kiss.

MAKE IT MEMORABLE How do you make your wedding stick out in everyone’s minds for years to come? Think outside the box to create an event they will never forget

Photography (clockwise from left): Rebecca Smith Photography: Enchanted Wedding Photography; Brown Paper Parcel; Nikole Ramsay.

Your wedding day is no doubt one of the most memorable days of your life. But how to do you make it one of the most memorable days of your guests’ lives? Go digital Create a website for your guests to visit to see all of the details of the upcoming nuptials. The beauty of this is you can make it extra personal by adding elements you cannot in hard copy such as a gallery of photos and music. You can also update the page whenever you like if things change along the way. Something like this will really stick in people’s minds in the lead up to the big day. Location, location, location Choose a unique wedding location to keep your guests talking for years to come. Love nature? Get married at a plantation or on a property instead of a venue. It will require a lot of work, bringing in everything you need onsite, however, the pay-off is something very unique. Just make sure you get the relevant permission first! Get the guests involved What better way to make your guests feel like they are a part of your special day than by actually getting them to become an integral part of your festivities? 100 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

Newtown couple Caroline and Chris involved their guests with a ‘guess who’ style pass-theparcel game – a great way to get everyone mingling to have a fun night together. Sweet somethings With epic food creations taking over social media, you know something sweet and interesting will keep your guests talking long after the reception is over. A cocktail slushie machine or an ice cream sundae bar could be what puts your festivities at the forefront of people’s minds. Treat the coffee lovers to barista made coffee or, perhaps, even an espresso martini. Make it a family affair Give your day a sentimental touch most people can relate to and ensure your family is front and centre for your celebrations to make it a memorable event that tugs at the heartstrings. Ask a family member who might not traditionally have a role in the ceremony, like your grandparents, to be involved. Revamp your mother or grandmother’s wedding dress or say ‘I do’ in the same place your parents did. Cate and Dan asked Dan’s 12-year-old brother and 13-year-old sister to MC their festivities, which was a hit with the guests.

A memorable surprise Sometimes what makes your wedding stand out is something out of the blue and out of your control. Catherine and Joel’s friends performed a hand written rap for them on their big day. If you are going to be in a wedding sometime soon, consider crafting a creative surprise for your close friend or family member. Get creative Wedding favours can come in all different shapes and sizes. Are you crafty? Do you enjoy a bit of DIY? Make your own custom presents for your guests to ensure they receive something meaningful and memorable. An extra treat Planning a day of celebration that you know you will not want to end when the bar announces last call? Keep the party going. Set up a ‘recovery day’ style brunch or barbecue the day after your wedding to reminisce on a wonderful celebration. A two-day event is bound to stick in people’s minds for a long time. Whatever you decide to do to make your wedding stand out above the rest – make sure it is something that sticks in your memory as the best day ever.

SUPPORTING ROLE Ensure your mum feels at her best on your big day by choosing the perfect mother-of-the-bride look The only other person in the world that has been dreaming of your wedding day more than you is your mum. Dreaming about what you will wear, where it will be and probably who it is to. For this reason it is just as crucial to make sure your mum feels as special as you do the moment you walk down that aisle. First off it is vital to take into consideration the colour scheme, try and pick a shade that sits well with the bridesmaids but does not necessarily match. A mother’s outfit should be able to reflect her personality, rather than sticking to boring old age-appropriate wear. They want to reflect all of that excitement and joy they’re feeling on the inside. Dressing to the body shape is essential so

that mums feel comfortable, but at the same time you don’t want them hiding away in a sack. Dresses with built-in shapewear and lace or sheer detailing can do wonders for a woman’s confidence. Functionality is also important you never know what the weather is going to be doing on your big day for certain. If you’re having a summer wedding, light options are always a good choice, with layers able to be added as conditions change throughout the day. Traditionally the mother of the bride is supposed to purchase her gown first, before the mother of the groom – but now-a-days it’s just as important to keep the communication open between the two mums. You don’t want a matching situation, but you also want to avoid

and clash – it won’t be a good look in all those photos. In terms of shoes, comfort should take precedence over style. While it is important to look good, weddings are long and you want mum be ready to tackle the dancefloor at the end of the night for your special song. Try and opt for a small to medium heel that is breathable and well secured, avoid bright colours and stick to neutrals or metallic, matching a nice clutch in the process. You can never go wrong with a strappy black or bone pair. Don’t go overboard on the jewellery either. If wearing the hair up, pick a nice dangly earring and if the hair is down choose a plain stud and consider adding a necklace.

From a sleek sports car to a retro kombi, a horse-drawn carriage to a vintage classic, every couple wants to make an impressive entrance on their wedding day. The bride stepping out of the bridal vehicle is one of the most memorable moments of any wedding. It’s when guests – and the groom – catch their first glimpse of the bride, making it one of the most visually important aspects of the day. So when it comes to choosing your wedding transport, there are several important aesthetic and practical factors to consider. It’s one part of the wedding planning process that the bride and groom can decide on together and Deb Grant, who runs Greater City Classics, says couples should opt for a vehicle which reflects their personalities. “It’s going to be a memory that lasts a lifetime,” she says. “So the choice of car has to be something they’re going to truly love.” 107 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU 107 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

The choice of wedding vehicle should also tie in with the tone and formality of the rest of the day. A traditional white wedding is well suited to a classic car, while more relaxed affairs can be reflected in the use of a more contemporary vehicle. Before you decide on a particular car, couples should also consider the size of their bridal party. “It depends whether they want the whole wedding party to travel in the car, or whether the bride and groom want to arrive separately,” Deb explains. “They need to be able to fit everybody in and they also have to be comfortable.” Reliability is paramount so couples should do their research. Ask friends and family for recommendations, and take into account customer reviews. Communication is also important. Couples should discuss all aspects of their wedding car requirements prior to booking. Details such as

duration and distance should be decided upon in advance, and communication should stay open right up until the big day. “Building a rapport with the clients is what I really like,” Deb says. “I will send an email a day or two before the wedding just to confirm all the details and on the wedding day I’ll text when the car has left, to let them know it’s on its way. “It makes clients feel comfortable which is so important.” Some wedding car companies also provide additional extras, so find out what is included in your package. “We try to make sure our clients don’t have to worry about a thing,” Deb says. “We have little sprayers to keep flowers fresh on a hot day and a bridal SOS kit. We always have bottled water, as well as other complimentary drinks. “It’s a special day and it should be enjoyed with nothing to worry about.”

CAROLINE + CHRIS STYLISH SOIREE

DATE TO REMEMBER Dazzling in a sequined low-back gown, Caroline Fitzgerald and her partner Chris Trewin together welcomed family and friends to the private Newtown function on January 23, 2016, before official proceedings began. The 70 guests then joined in a get-to-know-you game of pass-the-parcel, with each layer and clue wrapped carefully by the bride. Immediately after the ceremony, the cake – made of decadent layered cheeses – was cut for everyone to enjoy. “At 12.20am I took my heels off, sat back and watched everyone still enjoying the music, drinks and company,” Caroline says.

ENGAGING OCCASION Engagement parties are back in favour and couples are treating them like a mini-wedding, complete with a white dress, professional photographer, cake cutting and event styling

Jason Grozdanovski and Monique Neilson at their engagement party at The Batesford Hotel. Photography: Jane Dunning

The question has been asked and answered, the ring is on the finger and now it is time for the festivities to begin. Engagement parties have become just as lavish and celebratory as the big day and planning one can be a whole lot of fun. There is plenty to consider when organising this joyous occasion and it is important not to get caught up in any cringe-worthy trends which will be regretted in years to come. Tanya Bennett, proprietor of The Batesford Hotel, helps arrange weddings and engagement parties year-round and has noticed emerging patterns in the way couples celebrate their pending nuptials. “Engagements tend to be larger than the weddings as couples often make this the event where they can invite everyone and then the wedding tends to be smaller number wise,” Tanya says. “I find that the engagement parties are almost always cocktail style which lends itself to a party atmosphere. “More couples are wearing formal outfits

110 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

lately, giving the event an elegant feel.” Tanya’s venue boasts a large garden area and is a popular destination for summer celebrations. She has seen an increase in people bringing oversized games like chess, croquet, jenga for the adults and jumping castles for the kids. More recently it has also become popular for future brides to wear white to the party. While it is not customary, many enjoy the chance to offer guests a prelude to the wedding outfit. Themes, stylists, photographers, videographers, photo booths, wishing wells, large cakes, live entertainment and long speeches are all wedding staples which are now being seen more commonly at engagements. Monique Neilson and her fiance Jason Grozdanovski recently hosted their garden party-themed engagement at the Batesford for 230 friends and family. They had photographer Jane Dunning capture the occasion, with plenty of time and energy spent on styling and finishing touches.

“A stylist and event planner would have been amazing, however I did do all of it myself,” says Monique of the props and floral arrangements. “My bridal party and extended family helped with the set up on the day.” Wearing an Ae’lkemi deep plunge gown, Monique stuck to the white trend by having a beautiful two-tiered salted caramel buttercream cake, made by Darlene Pentalow. The couple also had speeches where both fathers spoke, using the time as an opportunity to thank guests and inform them the wedding would be smaller and more intimate. “The engagement party is an opportunity to celebrate with an extensive list of guests, and the wedding is used mostly for close family and friends,” Monique says. “I think that this could be due to the change from your traditional church and reception style wedding to the more relaxed celebration where capacity for guests is lower and price is higher.”

COUNTDOWN TO WEDDING WELLBEING Why wouldn’t we want to feel at our best on the biggest day of our lives? Planning ahead and putting yourself first is the key to feeling happy and vibrant as you say “I do”

Feeling the best you can feel, inside and out, on the big day is just as important as the perfect band, dress and venue. Clinical nutritionist Erin Storer says what we do to support ourselves on the inside, will radiate on the outside. “Your wedding day will be long and there will be many emotions present, by taking care of yourself from the inside, you can help to improve your stamina for the day so you’re not ready for a nap by the time photos have finished,” she says. She says internal health will allow you to improve your skin and your mental preparation to deal with the many emotions that you’ll be experiencing on the day.

12

Twelve months to go “Now is a great time to start improving your endurance for the big day by engaging in some light exercise,” Erin says. She suggests starting slow to build up fitness gradually. “If we change our perception of exercise from ‘losing weight’ and ‘toning up’, to ‘feeling strong’ and ‘improving our health’, it will help to take the pressure off yourself so that you can enjoy exercise,” she says. Erin suggests seeing a personal trainer once a week to keep on track. She says this is not the time to start a diet. “This can only create bad body image and encourage you to feel horrible about yourself,” she says. “If you want to make changes, start with

Erin suggests instead of wine after work each night to help you unwind, think of something you love doing that helps to relax you, such as listening to music, reading a book or magazine, watching a funny show or movie or going to yoga.

6

Six months to go Having a healthy start to the morning is a great way to go. “Smoothies are a great way to ensure you’re hitting your nutrient quota for the day, as well as being quick and easy so they’re a perfect option for brekky or an on the go snack,” she says. Erin encourages people to select organic or spray-free ingredients including fruits, vegetables and herbs when possible.

3

Three months to go At this point it is important to keep the exercise and food intake steady, increasing exercise and reducing food too much will only encourage you to crash and burn. “Now is a good time to really concentrate on making sure you’re getting enough water everyday so that you’re well hydrated prior to the day,” she says. “Water is crucial for skin health to ensure it is well hydrated, the health of our liver and lymphatic system to help process and clear toxins and waste, and bowel health to ensure we are moving our bowels daily. Erin encourages people to drink a minimum of one litre of water each day.

swapping just one or two things and gradually work on other bits as you change your habits. “For example, if you know the four coffees you’re having a day aren’t supporting your goals, start by swapping maybe one for an organic decaf and another for a non-caffeinated herbal tea like camomile. “Choose foods because of how they’ll nourish your body, such as raw nuts and seeds for healthy skin and hair or lightly steamed broccoli to help support your hormones and therefore reduce breakouts.”

9

Nine months to go This is the time to start building on the good work you have been doing. “It’s now time to work on the more stubborn habits, such as the two bottles of wine that get drunk most weekends or are consumed each night after work to help you relax,” she says. “These are the type of habits that will make a big impact on your health if you can reduce them, but are the hardest to move, and really require you to look within to find out why you actually do them.”

1

The final countdown: one week to go Eating as little processed foods as possible will help with skin and overall energy. “Keep up your water intake and really try and keep caffeine to a minimum the week before, if you need to have a warm drink to substitute, camomile, rooibos, or peppermint will help do the trick,” she says. “Try to keep your exercise to a minimum the few days leading up too, light walking or a light yoga class would certainly be beneficial to calm those nerves, as anything strenuous or high intensity may encourage you to become more anxious and stressed.”

VINTAGE TREE CHANGE

114 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

Dreamy settings for magical weddings are making a tree change. Preferred cool pine forests, wooded plantations and overcast weather add elements of enchanted romance to special occasions. This pretty styled shoot is inspired by a fig. The chill of the forest and its rustic wooden and gold textures blend wondrously with purple and cream-hued adornments. Likened to a scene from Europe, the concept also allows the vintage lace detailing to sing.

MARDI + PATRICK FIELD OF DREAMS

118 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Looking out over rolling hills and across the bay, Mardi Harwood and Patrick Dangerfield shared their first kiss as newlyweds before trading rings. “Our priest announced us as husband and wife but we had forgotten the whole section of exchanging rings,” Mardi remembers of January 2, 2016. “So we got to have another first kiss.” After signing the marriage certificate, the bride savoured the moment with her footballer groom and 180 guests. “The feeling once the formalities were over was amazing,” she says. “I loved celebrating with friends and family.”

GT BRIDE — 119

LOVE STORY Highschool sweethearts Mardi and Patrick have been together since 2008. He proposed on the beach at Moggs Creek before Christmas, too excited to wait until his original plan of New Year’s Eve. “He is always finding ways to have fun and make me laugh,” says Mardi, who organised most of the wedding from interstate. She tried on about 40 dresses before finding her dream design. “I have been fortunate to wear some beautiful gowns at Brownlows, so I was looking for something that made me feel different and that I could see myself getting married in,” she says. “My idea was to wear something elegant and simple, but not too plain.”

RELATIONSHIP GOALS From the sporting arena to the altar, top athletes have handpicked grand churches, picturesque outdoor settings and beautiful venues around Geelong to tie the knot

Photography: Enchanted Wedding Photography.

Our glorious region offered winning locations for loved-up local sports stars recently. Tegan Caldwell wed Joshi Philip at Mt Duneed Estate, exactly one year after first making eye contact at her sister’s engagement party. The professional netballer exchanged vows in front of 340 guests in an old chapel at Christian College on February 22, 2015 before joining a smaller crowd for the rustic–themed reception catered by Peter Rowland. Joshi, a secondary school teacher, surprised his bride by singing Just The Way You Are by Barry White after his speech. “We took a moment together and were thankful for the people we had in our lives and that they all came to celebrate this special day with us,” Tegan says. Fellow Vixens netballer Geva Mentor married Lachlan Crawford on December 20, 2015 at RACV Torquay. The ceremony was moved indoors at the

last minute when the heavens opened and rain was pouring sideways. Geva, who wore a custom gown from her native England and held Moss Industry flowers, fondly remembers standing in front of 110 special guests with Lachlan, who looked dapper in a Bellington Estate suit. “Lach and I were holding each other’s hands so tightly as we stood facing our friends and family,” she says. “I was extremely emotional holding back happy tears but was comforted knowing we

were together as one.” Meanwhile, Geelong footballer Tom Hawkins and former Cat Cameron Ling also chose the region for their respective nuptials. Tom wed Emma Clapham at Marcus Hill on March 20, 2016 and Cameron tied the knot with Nicole Dodds at Fairhaven in November, 2015. The weddings of footballers Tom Lonergan and Patrick Dangerfield and track runner Jess Gulli are featured in detail in this magazine.

The pair, who both work at Geelong hospital, took a relaxed approach to the big event, which perfectly fell into place on January 9, 2016 in front of 108 guests. “I think the more relaxed the process is the more fun you will have on the day,” says Stephanie, who accepted her doctor partner’s proposal in Paris. “Standing together in front of our favourite people and each marrying our single most favourite person in the world was so special.”

SHARING THE LOVE Social media has changed the way we share the big moments in our lives. But there are ways to control how much – or little – is put out there for all to see

Social media has become a massive part of our everyday lives. Who isn’t guilty of Instagramming a picture of their food or posting a Facebook rant? When it comes to your wedding, social media can work for or against you on the big day. When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot in 2014 the pair put a ban on all social media at the event. George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were rumoured to give out temporary ‘burner phones’ to guests to prevent photos of their wedding being leaked. The beauty of going down the ‘unplugged wedding’ path is not only do you have full control of how your wedding is represented visually; your guests will spend less time behind their phones and more time sharing your day with you. It would be a shame for the groom to have to look past a wall of iPhones to view his bride for the very first time. However, working with your friends and family’s desire to document the festivities can

126 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

give you another perspective on the day. It has become common practice for couples to create their own wedding hashtag for people to attach to their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram posts. This allows not only the couple, but their wider circle of family and friends view a collation of wedding photos taken from the guests’ perspective – just ensure your wedding hashtag is unique, or else you could be potentially crashing a stranger’s wedding Instagram! While many couples are creating their own wedding hashtags to collate their guests’ snaps, there needs to be some guidelines set. Again, it would be a shame for the groom to see a shot of the bride in her wedding dress on her bridesmaid’s social media before they even walk down the aisle. Many couples have found a happy medium and ask people to only post their photos after they do. Whatever you decide to do at your wedding regarding social media, the important thing is to make your intention clear to your guests.

Ask the celebrant to make a small announcement about the phone policy you want to instil. Add a note on your invitations or on any social media events you have created. Or make a cute sign outlining your wishes to display as your guests walk in. Regardless of what you choose, your photos should document your #happilyeverafter.

RIAHANNON + MITCH PERFECT MATCH

128 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER At the stroke of midnight, Riahannon Woods and her professional soccer player beau Mitch Langerak welcomed the New Year with 100 wedding guests. Gold-foiled confetti bombs and giant balloons full of glitter scattered joy across the reception, while nearby fireworks lit up the sky. “A lot of thought went into every single detail,” Riahannon says of December 31, 2015. “You could feel the love all night.”

GT BRIDE — 129

LOVE STORY A fairytale sunset proposal on a yacht off the Mexican coast was matched by a glamorous wedding at Jack Rabbit Vineyard on New Year’s Eve for Riahannon and Mitch. The Geelong bride searched for her dress across Europe, where she now resides with Mitch, but settled on a Melbourne gown. The bodice she designed herself. “She looked as gorgeous as ever,” says Mitch, who is originally from Brisbane. “It was the one day where all our family and friends could be in the same place together.” Instead of wedding favours, the duo made a donation to a foundation which works to improve underprivileged villages in Africa.

DATE TO REMEMBER Cate Bowman scanned her beautifully–decorated wedding venue at Clyde Park and burst into tears of joy before walking down the aisle to groom Dan O’Keefe on February 6, 2016. “It was more than I could have ever imagined,” she says. Wearing a flowing Grecian-style gown, by her favourite designer, Cate was supported by five close friends, including the maid of honour who was 38-weeks pregnant. “I felt very relieved she was even there, let alone looking so amazing,” she says. DATE TO REMEMBER Walking down the aisle to traditional Greek Orthodox chanting, Sophia Katos’ groom Tom Baum was overcome with emotion. “I’ll never forget his face,” she says. The actress wore a whimsical dress full of dramatic detail and spent the entire occasion by her husband’s side to ensure their memories of January 16, 2016 were created together. And after a night of dancing, they shared gelato under the stars.

LOVE STORY Sophia and Tom met as teenagers when they were locked in a room together by friends at a party. After seven years as a couple, Tom masterminded a proposal which spanned a further two years. On special occasions, Sophia would receive engraved keys. These eventually opened a box containing the ring. During speeches at the reception, a final gold key was lowered from a hanging floral installation made by her aerospace engineering husband, who also built the photobooth backdrop out of a hedge from the family farm. “Our wedding was a reflection of our personalities and that’s what made it really special for us and our guests,” he says.

COME TO THE BRIDAL PARTY Whether you have one or 10, bridesmaid selection is the big proposal you might have forgotten about. Choosing a bridesmaid squad as strong as Taylor Swift’s girl squad takes a lot of thought The big proposal has happened, but now you have to pop the question to someone else. You need to choose your bridal party. You’re about to walk down the aisle to marry the love of your life – but who is going to stand by you to hold your bouquet, ensure you don’t trip on your train and plan the best hens day ever? Choosing your bridesmaids is a big decision. From the size of your bridal party to who makes the cut, there are many things to consider. The bridal party How many bridesmaids and groomsmen are you going to have? Do you want an even amount of bridesmaids to groomsmen? Do you want to have a big bridal party or do you want to keep it simple with a smaller selection? If you have a big family or group of friends, or both, it can be tricky to single out that select few who will be closest to you when you walk down the aisle.

This is a good opportunity to talk to your groom-to-be to nut out how intimate or big the bridal party should be. Choosing a good maid of honour is key. The maid of honour is the leader of the pack, your right-hand-woman so-to-speak. Her responsibility is to do a lot of planning to make your day the best it can be. Choosing someone who is organised could save a lot of stress and time down the track. Selecting the extended bridal party The best kind of bridesmaid to have around is one that is helpful, supportive and agreeable. Will they wear their hair the way you want it? Will they wear the colour and style dress of your choice without complaint? Who do you see being a part of your life for the rest of your life? Because those wedding photos will potentially be on display in your home forever. Money can be another factor to consider. Do you expect your bridesmaids to pay for

certain parts of their look? Can they afford it? Ensuring all bridesmaids will be able to fulfil financial expectations is important to avoid any awkwardness between you later. Considering how your bridesmaids will get along is another factor to consider, however, they are there for your big day, so hopefully this is not an issue. How to break the news Asking your select few to be bridesmaids at your wedding is hopefully a joyous moment. It is an invitation to intimately share one of the biggest days of your life. Inevitably there will be people in your life who expected to be asked to be a part of your bridal party but for whatever reason have not; you could have grown apart, you could have decided to only ask family. Although it can be stressful to think you might upset people by not asking them, it is important to remember it is your day, and your choice. GT BRIDE — 149

KATIE + PAUL TOGETHER FOREVER

152 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER When Katie Guthridge and Paul West locked eyes for the first time on October 24, 2015, they couldn’t wait to be in each other’s grasp. The pair, who wanted the special occasion to have a music festival atmosphere, tied the knot at Mt Duneed Estate in front of a parquetry backdrop they made together on a friend’s farm. “Everything was absolutely perfect,” Katie says.

GT BRIDE — 153

LOVE STORY Katie wore a lace bodice and fitted skirt at the ceremony but switched into a design more conducive for dancing at the reception, which was decorated with geometric touches and copper detailing by Nomad Styling. Her three bridesmaids chose their own dresses based on colour swatches. The newlyweds made sure to spend moments alone, slipping away from their 120 guests to enjoy a quiet cocktail together. Katie, a physical education teacher, says she married a beautiful, genuine soul. “It started out with his crazy, fuzzy hair but once I got to know him, his caring personality and thoughtful nature really won me over,” she says.

RUCHIRA + GAJAN TWICE THE DELIGHT

DATE TO REMEMBER Ruchira Kanahara and Gajan Karunanandan followed their Hindu union in Melbourne on March 26, 2016 with a traditional Buddhist wedding at The Pier in Geelong the next day. “Walking down the aisle was a surreal moment, thinking ‘Oh gosh this is actually my wedding’,” Ruchira says. The bride wore a saree for the ceremony and changed into a different glimmering gown for the reception. The waterfront venue was decorated in gold and purple hues with Tiffany chairs. “I love the way Gajan takes care of situations and most of all the way he takes care of me,” she says. “He has a good heart.”

CROWNING GLORY Styling your locks into the perfect ‘do will not only complete your look, but complement your dream dress. Here are some things to consider when choosing a style The first thing for a bride to tick off the wedding to-do-list – aside from the groom – is often the dress. Next would be hair. The options are virtually endless when it comes to styling and it is important element in completing the entire look. Most brides will have one or multiple hair and makeup trials before the big day and it is crucial to communicate as much as possible to the stylist. Tracey Clarke from Pash says she always likes to sit down with her brides in the months leading up to the wedding. “The bride’s theme or personality often will dictate the hairstyling for the day,” Tracy explains. “If the gown is floaty, formal, lacey, a colour, bohemian or classically elegant, or if there are headpieces or veils, I will guide the bride to complement the look with the perfect hairstyling, which will be the all-important finishing touch.” Owner of Salon Eve, Barbara Ferantte, has noticed a number of trends which have stuck around for a few seasons now. “We have noticed that brides want effortless soft looks, lots want half-up halfdown waves and plenty are still using flowers as hair pieces,” she says. There are three vital things to take into consideration when planning your hairstyle, according to Barb. They are weather, dress neck line and face shape. “The weather and the time of year would often determine if hair is up or down, it has a

big impact of how the longevity of the style,” she explains. “The neck line of the dress is important because hair styles need to emphasise the dress, not cover it. “And the shape of the bride’s face must be contemplated because you don’t want to provide a style that makes the bride look bigger – most brides want to look beautiful thin and photogenic.” She has noticed that veils are going smaller rather than long-trailing pieces, otherwise it’s a plain fascinator with a bird cage veil.

In terms of colour, Barb says the babylights foiling technique is trending both in Hollywood and in weddings. The technique – seen on stars like Chrissy Teigen and Jessica Alba – is a natural-looking colour with very fine, subtle highlights that are meant to look like the natural hair colour of a child, where colour is brighter at the crown and the bottom of the hair. “Babylights are a great way to make a bridal style stand out,” Barb says. “A tip from us make sure your hair colour is freshly done so that it really makes an impact.” GT BRIDE — 159

BRIGID + TROY LANGUAGE OF LOVE

160— GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Troy Chapman chose Christmas morning to propose to Brigid Beggs, nervously handing her a box from under the tree with a handwritten letter. The pair wed a little more than a year later on February 27, 2016 in Torquay and Troy again captured her heart with his words of admiration. “The speeches were amazing,” says Brigid, who wore a dreamy French guipure lace dress. “They melted my heart - especially Troy’s.”

GT BRIDE — 161

LOVE STORY Brigid and Troy exchanged vows at St Therese Church before celebrating their union with 116 family members and friends at the reception at RACV Torquay. The entire occasion was classically styled with special touches, including handmade concrete candles and cookies as bonbonnieres. “Make sure the wedding reflects who you are as a couple,” Brigid suggests. “Don’t hold back on anything you have your heart set on.” The primary teacher has fond memories of the dancefloor, where all guests embraced the joy of the evening. “We had a number of pregnant ladies at the wedding and I saw them having a boogie,” she says. “I loved that.”

KEEPING THE LOVE ALIVE Nurturing your relationship is vital in maintaining the kindness, respect and romance all of us desire in a marriage that is made to last Planning a wedding can be stressful, not only on the bride, but the groom and the relationship as a whole. However, it is important to ensure the perfect wedding day doesn’t come at the detriment to the bond that brought you together in the first place. There are some things couples can keep in mind to ensure their relationship stays strong through the process to ensure a lead up into a happy marriage ahead. Civil celebrant Wendy Spalding can spend up to 18 months working with a couple prior to a wedding. She tailors each ceremony to a couple so no two are the same. Wendy says it is important for her to get to know a couple before the big day to ensure her part in the wedding is exactly what the couple envisions. “There is a lot of contact,” she says. During that time, she sees some couples who can get through the planning without any stress.

164 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

However, she says some couples, after months of planning, can feel quite strained come the wedding day. “There is a lot of pressure,” she says. With everything that is going on during the planning stages, it can be easy to ignore the relationship itself. Wendy says it is important for a couple to maintain the romance that brought them together in the first place. “Yes, the wedding is important,” she says. “But it’s also important to still do the things they used to do prior. “Whether that be date night or visiting family and friends.” She encourages couples to try to make time for one-another even when things become hectic during the planning. “It’s important to maintain that balance,” she says. Wendy says it is also important to be honest during the planning to ensure that the big day reflects the couple.

“Lines of communication need to stay open,” she says. “Whether it be the bride or the groom who does not like a song that is selected or something with the seating plan, they need to voice that.” After all the excitement, everything can feel flat post-wedding. Getting a marriage off on the right foot could possibly set up a stronger and happier marriage to come. Wendy says she is still in contact with many of the couples she has married as a celebrant. She says when the big day is over, there are things couples can do to kick-off their marriage in the best possible way. Setting shared goals is a good start. “Couples need to sit down and share their goals,” she says. “Whether that be big things like buying a house or smaller things like going on weekend trips or going to the movies.”

SHEREE + SCOTT BLOSSOMING ROMANCE

166 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Sheree Giuffré held her mother’s hand as she walked towards groom Scott Verner. A photo of her dad was attached to the bouquet so he was also with her every step of the way. The gorgeous occasion was celebrated at Clyde Park on the auspicious date of Friday, November 13, 2015. “It was a very lucky day for us, everything turned out perfectly,” Sheree says.

LOVE STORY Sheree and Scott were married at the first venue they inspected and she wore the first dress she tried on. “I felt like a princess on the day,” she says. The fashion stylist started planning the wedding upon returning from the couple’s romantic engagement in Venice. She made the invitations, table numbers, potted herbs and gift boxes, as well as re-sewing her headpiece to sit just right. “It actually kept me occupied while Scott was away working overseas,” she says. Scott, who adores his wife’s strength and bubbly personality, was impressed by the finer touches. “Every little detail was incredible, it really blew me away,” he says

BIG ON BLOOMS Flowers have never played such a starring role in every aspect of a wedding celebration and the blossoming trend is bringing a fresh focus to styling the big day They’re one of the prettiest features of any wedding and more than ever before beautiful blooms are making an impact throughout all areas of a couple’s big day. Once limited to bridal party bouquets, today’s weddings are using florals like never before – from the ceremony right through to the reception. The choice of flowers can help dictate the style of the event. Loose, imperfect arrangements work well with informal weddings, while more formal affairs are complemented by the use of

sophisticated, structured floral displays. When it comes to bouquets, it seems tight, ball-shaped bunches are a trend of the past. According to Danielle Fraser, who runs Ocean Grove florist Moss Industry, today’s brides are opting for bouquets with bulk, with a freshlypicked look. “At the moment it’s all about oversized, unstructured and unbalanced bunches,” she says. “Brides have really moved away from the round bouquets and are going for the more natural, garden-picked look.”

While rustic, mixed bunches continue to prove popular, one of the biggest trends in bridal blooms is arrangements featuring a single variety of flower. Danielle says old-fashioned favourites such as hydrangeas, gypsophila and dahlias are well and truly back in favour while the perennially popular David Austin roses, garden roses and peonies continue to be much-loved among brides. “One type of flower en masse is very big at the moment,” Danielle says. “Gyp has come way back. If it’s just a couple

of stems in a bunch it won’t have much impact but en masse it looks fantastic. Hydrangeas are a popular choice with this trend too.” But bouquets are not always all about flowers. Brides looking to stamp their individuality on their big day are increasingly opting for arrangements which feature everything from twigs, vines and succulents to herbs, fruits and other edibles. Likewise, the role of foliage in wedding flowers continues to increase, the many varied options available perfect for introducing texture and interest. “Years ago you wouldn’t have considered gum leaves as part of a wedding bouquet,” Danielle says. “But now it’s a really popular choice. We are using random things that previously we wouldn’t have looked at twice. “There are no real rules at the moment. People are doing anything and everything.” Danielle says there is a strong preference towards flowers which are in season with locally-grown an additional advantage, which not only saves on cost but also ensures arrangements are beautifully fresh. And the time of year a wedding is held can certainly influence a bride’s choice of blooms. Danielle says some brides will even select their wedding date based around which flowers are in season, especially when their chosen bloom has limited availability throughout the year. “We see a lot of brides who get married in November for peonies,” she explains. “In general seasons are influencing the type of flowers or the colours a bride will choose. “If you are getting married in late autumn, you might go for dark, moody plum shades mixed with pinks and creams. “For a summer wedding we are seeing a lot of green and white which gives that really crisp, elegant look. “But every season has got something beautiful to offer.” Flowers also play a strong role in reception styling with modern couples continually finding fabulous ways to incorporate pretty pickings throughout all aspects of a wedding day. “Florals have become huge,” Danielle says. “Once it was just the bride’s bouquet and the

bridesmaids’ bouquets. Now the ceremony side of it is very big. There’s everything from a welcome sign, aisle runner to flowers on chairs and pews. “Hanging greenery is really big at the moment and we are doing a lot of arches and orbs.” The floral theme is continued through into reception where cakes are being adorned with bold blooms and cascading floral installations add extra interest to a venue or marquee.

But Danielle says brides are starting to move away from the rustic styling which has been so prevalent in previous years. While arrangements still have a freshlypicked feel, she says we may be seeing the back of the mason jar phenomenon with those seeking a vintage vibe now looking to achieve it through the use chic accessories such as mismatched antique vases. “We are going back to table top flowers which are very elegant, Danielle says.

STEPH + SAM PRECIOUS BOND

172 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Under a natural cathedral of pine trees, Steph Geue married Sam Miller in a town far north of their East Geelong home. “It had to be Bright,” Steph says. “This place is so special to Sam and I. Both our families share a love for the area.” On the morning of March 12, 2016, Steph’s bridesmaids delivered special boxes from Sam. “Each had a note that had beautiful words on them, which made me cry each time,” she says.

GT BRIDE — 173

LOVE STORY Steph and Sam first spoke at the Queenscliff Music Festival after a meeting was encouraged by his sister Clare. The draftsman proposed to his love at M&M World in Times Square, New York. “It was so busy that no one took notice,” Steph remembers. “It was a special moment for us in the hustle and bustle.” Sam crafted the arbour and coat racks for the wedding and carved their initials into a tree. In the balmy evening, 118 guests enjoyed the couple’s favourite ice-cream. “At one stage I got off the dance floor and looked back to see everyone with massive smiles on their faces and Stephy right in the middle dancing,” Sam says. “That amazing image will stay with me forever.”

ALYSSA + HEATH

176 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Alyssa Flynn and Heath Roles shared their first dance on the Barwon Heads pier in light rain with a theatrical backdrop of storm clouds as adoring guests watched on. It was their highlight of the special day on March 14, 2015, which began in the bride’s hometown of Anglesea. “I am lucky to have found a beautiful partner, inside and out,” Heath says. “I know our adventures will continue until we are old and wrinkly.”

GT BRIDE — 177

LOVE STORY It was a sentimental occasion for Alyssa, whose parents were married at the same location on the outskirts of Anglesea 29 years prior. She carried jewellery of her late grandmothers and handcrafted the decorations and table settings. Proudly, her 95-year-old pa, who has since passed, attended the ceremony and reception. “To have him share this day with us meant the absolute world to me,” she says. “The thought still brings a tear to my eye.” The tide was rising as the bridal party posed for photos at the nearby beach, before a mustardyellow Kombi transported the newly-married couple to Barwon Heads.

JESS + CASEY A GRAND ROMANCE

182 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Track athlete Jess Gulli and her love Casey Nance wrote their own vows and kept them secret until they were at the altar together at Campbell Point House on December 30, 2015. “Hearing each other’s vows was pretty special,” Jess remembers. The couple wed on a weekday between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, knowing most of their 90 guests would be happily on holidays. “Everything was amazing,” Jess says.

GT BRIDE — 183

LOVE STORY On a cold rainy day, Casey took Jess to the same beach where they had their first date. Jess sensed the proposal. “I saw it coming a mile away, I know him too well,” she says. “Nonetheless it was the best. He always knows how to put a smile on my face – he is the most caring person I know.” Jess always swooned over Anna Campbell gowns but didn’t think they would suit her figure. Luckily, she still tried one on. “I’m not very emotional, so when I got a bit teary I knew I had found it.” Casey admires his wife’s dedication to professional running and her positive attitude most. “Jess makes the most out of every day, she makes me want to be a better person,” he says.

SWEET TOUCH It has long been the centrepiece of a wedding reception and rightly so. Here is some advice on creating a celebratory cake that’s almost too good to cut

Photography (clockwise from left): Wolf In Boots Photography; Hails & Shine; The White Tree Company

Have your cake and eat it too with wedding desserts which are a treat for both the eyes and the tastebuds. From exquisitely decorated creations to rustic, pared back sweets, we explore some of this year’s irresistible cake trends. Decadent desert tables Rather than opting for just one cake, an indulgent trend has emerged with brides opting for deliciously decadent dessert tables. The more traditional option of different flavoured tiers stacked upwards has been replaced by couples instead choosing to scatter each cake layer across a table. This more relaxed look provides an opportunity to create a visually stunning reception display, while having more than one cake also allows for greater variety for guests. Expect to see smaller cakes, cupcakes, brownies and cookies all served up. Naked cakes The naked cake phenomenon is showing no sign of slowing, with the stunning simplicity of the design still a popular choice for rustic style weddings. This trend sees little or no icing applied, ensuring it really is all about the cake. The lack of frosting ensures guests can see every detail, meaning the filling between 186 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

layers becomes particularly important. As we all know, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Buttercream Perfectly-smooth fondant-covered cakes have taken a back seat to the relaxed, homespun vibe which buttercream icing provides. Perfect for couples who want to keep it simple, this delicious option works with finishes ranging from organic-looking swoops designed to look intentionally rustic, through to textured piping and rosettes. Either way the result is elegant yet effortless. This is definitely one trend which tastes as good as it looks. Flowers The enduring beauty of fresh florals has become a wedding cake favourite in recent years but as trends in the floral world change, so too do flowers on cakes. With bridal trends like hanging garlands, laurel wreaths and boho crowns having a strong presence in modern weddings, cascading and unstructured arrangements are also making their way onto dessert displays. Fresh floral decorations are also a beautiful option for bringing together aspects of a couple’s colour palette while also leaving a stunning visual impression.

Watercolour Elegant and fun, watercolour has been a popular theme for wedding stationery in recent years and is now starting to make its way onto wedding cakes. This oh-so-pretty theme can be applied in varying ways: smooth fondant can be used as a canvas for cake artists, while swirls of delicately hued buttercream can add a dreamy, painterly quality to confectionary creations. Seasonal flavours As with most things wedding-related, the time of year the event is held can influence choices. It is true for aspects such as outfits and venue, and today’s couples are increasingly finding the wedding cake is no exception. A summer wedding might make the most of the abundance of fresh produce on offer – think beautiful berries piled high on top of a chocolate or sponge cake. A popular flavour for autumn is cinnamon, a rich and comforting influence as the weather cools. Spring cakes are ideal with a hint of pear for a refreshing bite, while florals are of course also prevalent. Glowing white tones reminiscent of a winter wonderland are a great fit for the coolest months.

POST-WEDDING FEAST

A dinner party at dusk full of laughter and storytelling is the dream setting for a wedding feast, according to Belinda Austin of Moorabool Valley wine producer Austins & Co. “The perfect wedding indulgence is good food, wine and cocktails,” she says. “Besides the overall atmosphere on the day, the food and wine is usually what people talk about afterwards.” Belinda explores the idea of pre-wedding celebrations, overnight glamping and casual post-occasion recovery banquets in this styled shoot on her rural property. “I love the warm sunlight that shines through the trees at dusk,” she says. “It is all about elegance and indulgence within a rustic bush setting and enjoying great food and wine with friends.”

CESSIAH + JOSH HEARTS OF GOLD

196 — GTBRIDE.COM.AU

DATE TO REMEMBER Best friends Cessiah Henderson and Josh Athorn wed at the same Geelong church their respective parents also married. The happy union on May 16, 2015, was abounding with personal touches reflective of the couple’s spirit, including a handmade architrave decorated with fresh blooms by the bride’s mother and golden favours. “We love that our story started with a really good friendship,” Cessiah says. “We were totally ourselves and that’s how our love grew.”

GT BRIDE — 197

LOVE STORY Before Cessiah zipped up her wedding dress in the store, she knew it was the one. “It was nothing like what I envisioned wearing but it fit perfectly and I felt so comfortable and beautiful in it,” she says. The milliner spent the morning of the wedding with her sister and mum Victoria – who also arranged the bouquets, decorated the wedding cake and styled the reception for 80 guests at Zigfrids Dining Hall. “I didn’t really know how it would look until I got there and I was absolutely in awe when I saw it, I bawled my eyes out,” says Cessiah, who has since relocated to Hobart with Josh. “I couldn’t pick just one favourite memory, the whole day was absolutely magical.”

POP-UP TRENDS No-fuss nuptials combining the ease of elopement and the beautiful trimmings of a wedding ceremony are becoming increasingly popular with couples looking for a meaningful yet cost–effective union

Photography: Hails & Shine

A fresh no-fuss style of wedding is taking on the region, giving couples a chance to skip a lot of the intensive planning and hefty price tag without a clinical registry office feel. Pop-up weddings, the concept of an elopement but with many of the trimmings of a traditional wedding ceremony, are becoming more and more popular. Brittany Snow from the Elopement Collective says pop-up weddings offer a unique experience to couples looking for a little more than signing a piece of paper. “The concept sits somewhere in between the registry office and your traditional wedding celebration,” she says. “On a set date we style a really intimate wedding venue and invite an amazing photographer and videographer to capture the event. “We’re about celebrating marriage in a fresh way.” In the space of an hour a couple’s guests arrive, they are legally married and a range of

photos are taken of the newlyweds and their family. What comes next is up to them. “Some of our couples book a table at a restaurant and some go home to a barbecue or family gathering,” Brittany says. The Elopement Collective launched in 2014 after Brittany and celebrant Josh Withers saw a hole in the wedding market. The pair hosted a pop-up wedding day at Portarlington Mill on the Bellarine Peninsula in October. Eight couples said their ‘I dos’ in their own intimate ceremonies. Brittany says the venue was chosen for its history, character and sense of intimacy. The business provides the civil marriage celebrant, a styled ceremony with furniture and flowers, a minimum of 30 photos of the ceremony and a family and portrait session post-nuptials. Brittany says there are many reasons people decide to go down the pop-up wedding path.

“The most important thing you get is your time and savings back,” she says. “Your time is the only thing you truly own in this world, so we’ll take one hour of it to begin your marriage, you now have the rest of it to live with. “The day you begin your marriage shouldn’t be about ‘doing it correctly’, as your mother would have you do it, or as Pinterest says you should do it. “Day one of marriage should just be a real and meaningful celebration. “If that’s a wedding, elopement or pop-up wedding then that’s up to you, but you deserve the opportunity to choose.” The business has since married hundreds of couples all over the world including Hawaii and Bali. Brittany says the Elopement Collective will host another Geelong pop-up wedding day in 2017. For more information and bookings visit elopementcollective.com GT GT BRIDE BRIDE —— 205 205

JAMIE + CHRIS ETERNAL CONNECTION

DATE TO REMEMBER Chris Wiedmann proposed to Jamie Dell at the top of the You Yangs. “Jamie is an amazing person with a kind, caring and beautiful soul,” Chris says. Their respective grandfathers were ring bearers at the wedding on March 14, 2015. “I love Chris’ sense of humour and how he looks after me,” says Jamie, who wore the second gown she tried on. “He motivates me every day to do bigger and better things.” The couple danced to You’ll Never Walk Alone and Chris remembers looking around the room of 135 guests to see the joy on thier faces. Later in the night, the sugary sweet DIY sundae bar was a hit.

CAITY + SIAN TRUE BLESSING

DATE TO REMEMBER Sian Ellett and Caity Fowler were showered with soft rose petals by each of their guests, one by one, on November 7, 2015. “It felt like hundreds of tiny cool kisses on my skin,” remembers Sian, who wore a leafy white dress. “It felt like an endless pouring of love, care and affection.” The couple made a gorgeous entrance hand in hand to a song written by musician Caity and performed by friends. A special meditation, swapping of flower garlands and the rose petal blessing followed. “I love Sian’s softness, warmth and laugh - you can hear it from anywhere spilling out like sunshine.”

KARLIE + JOHN FLYING HIGH

DATE TO REMEMBER Karlie Woodcock arrived spectacularly by air to her destination wedding on King Island, where she grew up. Her groom, John Tate, wore matching suits with their four-month-old son Angus. “Our wedding day was everything we imagined it to be and more,” says Karlie, who met her now-husband at the Belmont Lions Football Neball Club. The Leopold couple created a website full of information for the 90 guests attending, while Karlie’s dad made giant letters and an outdoor photo booth. Brightlyhued flowers, flown in from Tasmania on the morning of January 22, 2016, were a feature of the day.
