Stage 01.
Preparation & Brief To inspect techniques that are used to enhance a decaying coastal town, a visit to experience Margate was crucial. The initial brief questioned the approach to improve the use of Winter Gardens. By integrating the general public as a starting point, an investigation on tourists spaces and public transport in Margate was important. This led to the research of two communities that exist in Margate. The permanent community consisted of four discussion groups; Margate Civic Society, Margate Town Team, Dreamland Trust and Margate Historical Society. From researching, it proved that all four groups currently do not have a general space to discuss. The current office spaces differs in location to the discussion and conference spaces. With the transient community, the focus was on public transport, in particular bus passengers arriving into Margate. A recording of the bus stop outside Winter Gardens, displayed buses arriving hourly in which the last bus arrived 15 minutes late. There were no sign of activity or result of passengers arriving or departing. Therefore, by researching the current facilities and use, a requirements diagram for each and both communities collectively was developed. Compiling bus times, Winter Gardens and discussion group time and events, a diagram to show crucial moments to interfere was produced, in particular, a moment to challenge dwell time. A zoning diagram of Winter Gardens current use shows the rear of the building inactive, which provides an opportunity to create a new entrance, that buses, cars and pedestrians can access. The business case and project objectives was to produce a hub, where activities and programmes were developed to challenge dwell time, and the potential of how an interior space can be treated as an urban atmosphere. A study of urban cities and it’s configurations was explored which was further researched in Stage 02.

Stage 02.
Concept Design The strategy to meet an urban atmosphere within an interiors and to accommodate a mass of the general public, was to investigate scale, proportions and interpretation of materials. The project solely focused on the rear of the building where a large stainless steel grid structure was introduced to contain smaller interior pieces. Taking a large container that fits smaller components as freely or compact as possible, initiates the idea of an urban interior. This idea produced a design development of a facade and canopy that would include small micro architecture pieces underneath. Architectural elements such as the stainless steel grid and steel conductive floor, would be produced specifically to fit Winter Gardens. Whereas, the design of the micro architecture pieces would be modular and be an economic form of production.
EXISTING MID LEVEL WINTER GARDENS
With the stainless steel grid and steel conductive floor, it would provide an electrical current (like dodgems in fairgrounds) for the micro architecture pieces to move around freely as a device and therefore produce various configurations of cross-programming. The idea of creating the micro architecture pieces as devices links back to urbanising the interior.

Design Development The design development focused on the design of each micro architecture pieces, and the configurations they can create. The design of each micro architecture was based on being transformable. Each module would have it’s own feature and programme, however using the default same materials of stainless steel tube, plywood, rubber flooring and acrylic sheets. The design development takes into consideration on how the pieces could be unhooked from the stainless steel grid canopy and go out to visit Margate to produce the same activities and programmes introduced out into the urban atmosphere. The devices act as a form of contributing to the regeneration. Various lighting was also explored and introduced, inspired by dodgems and bright fairground lights.

Stage 04.
Technical Design During the technical design, the focus was on the integration of materials to produce one micro architecture piece. A diagram was produced to show all the components and pieces fitting together and how economically feasible it would be to produce a mass of micro architecture. The intention of this diagram was to guide the construction process of a 1:10 prototype. Initially, the intention of the prototype was to be made out of a remote control car taken apart. However, when the pieces were removed, the process required more time and care into studying the individual pieces to extend the wheel rod to fit onto the 1:10 prototype. Therefore, the prototype is not a working prototype but instead, explores the size and materiality of the micro architecture.

The 1:20 detail drawing of the movable facade shows how the materials come together in order for this movement to happen. It shows the impact of how the new introduced facade has on the existing structure and to the canopy that holds services and lighting.

Stage 05.
Specialist Design The project portrays a playful and humorous quality that also investigates scale and proportions, therefore, the overall whole model was produced in scale, however the activities, programmes and conversations that happen were produced at a larger scale. The intention of the model was to made interactive and users would be prompted to play with the model and make up their own configurations with the micro architecture pieces. However, the main focus was to portray the cheerfulness of the proposal. The internal and external views were hand drawn in a light, linear technique to express the colours and the liveliness of the project.
