According to Marc Augé non-place are spaces of circulation, consumption and communication that exist beyond history, producing a sense of both atomization and anonymity. In this manual, it will take you step by step into considering two communities and programmes in Margate and establish the idea of non-place as a concept, whilst challenging the relationship of place and non-place.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

The concept and design is derived from theoretical research, in particular Charle’s Rice’s theory of the atmosphere of interior urbanism. Rice signifies five characteristics of an urban interior which has been adapted and explored in the process of the design.

2 - INVESTIGATION INTO MARGATE

The permanent communities, four of Margate’s main discussion groups, provide an opportunity to gather public and create public realm and interaction. Whereas, with the transient community, bus passengers arriving into Winter Gardens offers an opportunity to manipulate dwell and waiting time at the bus stop. However, in accordance to Marc Augé ’s theory, bus stops could be considered as non-place. The focus is on the attention of the destination and not the bus stop. They are relied on memory to exist in, despite the contradiction of these spaces being the focus of regeneration to enhance culture and society. Therefore, the base of the place making design is based on eight micro architecture devices that form their own network within Winter Gardens and contribute to existing networks in Margate to enhance interaction, involvement and regeneration. Within the interiors of Winter Gardens, the intention is for the users to question the transitition from the public and private in terms of the use of materiality, and whether they are in an urban condition set within the interiors.

1905 The original Fort Green and Fort Green Bandstand - The Festes Committee was formed in 1900, to provide high class entertainment in Margate for visitors and residents.

1908 The original Fort Green and Fort step

1911 Proposed Winter Gardens - Situated in an artificial hollow at Fort Green as the existing buildings around Fort Green had a covenant. This did not allow the rise of any building on the green that could obscure the view or light of the ground floors of these buildings.

July 1911 Construction of Winter Gardens began - It took just nine months to build!

1912 Winter Gardens - Winter Gardens consisted of a large Concert Hall, four entrance walls, two side wings and an amphitheatre. - Internally, the Pavilion and Winter Gardens was decorated in a Neo-Grecian style, which appears in the 1830’s. Originally the stage could be viewed from both the main hall and the ampitheatre with the ability to enclose the stage in bad weather.

1950

Winter Gardens without the structural changes we have today - In January 1941, many of the windows were broken when a sea mine exploded nearby, the main structure was undamaged. - Six months later the Winter Gardens received a direct hit on 7th July 1941 causing damange. - The plans for reconstruction of the Winter Gardens were drawn up in 1943 but due to the war. In 1946, the work took only six months to complete.
