Are you ready?
September is upon us and school starts its new year. August has flown by again and the holidays are now safely in the scrap book as we move closer to Autumn. With so much going on in Bexhill aren’t we fortunate to have enjoyed such good weather? We have more advice from our gardener, Ian Ward, blackberries are out so be sure to read the Beach Hut Cook’s liqueur recipe. Also there’s the RHS Wisley Flower Show to visit from 4th-8th September. There’s more excitement at the De La Warr Pavilion, with the Moto Gymkhana on the 5th, the Mayor’s Show in October, both promise to be spectacular events among many. We have another busy month approaching don’t we? We are here to help promote businesses, to serve the local Bexhill community, raise awareness of local charities and events going on in the area. If you think we might be able to help you then please get in touch. Feel free to leave comments on our website www.bexhillianmag.co.uk As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed on the last text page, on our website or email your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you. Thank you, as always, to everyone who has contributed, see you next month!

YOUR STORIES
BEXHILL to bexhill A journey by train with a nod to Annie Annie (Lady) Brassey was a Victorian collector, traveller, writer and philanthropist, with strong connections to Bexhill, England. It is her story which has been revisited throughout the research for this trip from Bexhill, England to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Much of Lady Brassey’s collection from her home at Normanhurst, Catsfield, was donated to the Bexhill Museum in the early part of the twentieth century, and continues to form a significant contribution to their collection today. Annie’s small stature features largely, with a life size figure standing amongst her treasures. Annie’s father in law (Thomas Brassey) had been a significant contractor of the railways throughout the world. Travelling by train was just one of the many modes of transport taken by Annie and her family, with the greatest distances travelled by yacht, most notably the ‘Sunbeam’. Four voyages around the world were taken in the ‘Sunbeam’, all of which resulted in her popular publications: “Voyage of the Sunbeam”; “Sunshine and Storm in the East”; “In the Trades, the Tropics and the Roaring Forties”; and “The Last Voyage” (published posthumously by her husband, Earl Brassey). It is thought that the yacht was named after Annie’s daughter, Constance, who Annie lost to scarlet fever at the age of four. Her nickname “Sunbeam” was taken for the yacht with the gold painted figurehead made in her memory, now kept at the National Maritime Museum, London. This is all that is left of the ‘Sunbeam’ now, although a model of the yacht can be found at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery (UK). The three Bexhill’s are roughly equidistant and span the globe. Each have railway tracks running through them, although not all are in use today. The discovery of, and the reason for these
places to be named ‘Bexhill’ stirred my curiosity and lay the foundations to this project. There were no immediately obvious connections between the locations, and Bexhill in Canada had almost been lost to history. They are almost as far apart as is possible, each with quite different climates and landscapes. It became necessary to travel to each, to spend time finding out as much as I could. The decision to make my journey by train is in part informed by the connections with the Brassey’s, the evidence of railway’s in each location, and also as a means of travel which allows greatest connection with the countries passed through, giving a greater sense of scale and distance, as sailing would have done for Annie. Without the means of a fully staffed 531 tonne luxury yacht at my disposal, it is hoped that travelling by train will be a good enough substitute. My journey will begin in September 2013, at Bexhill Station. Travelling through 16 countries and 18 time zones, I will be able to continue by train until I reach Malaysia. A series of boats, buses, planes, trains and automobiles will take me to Bexhill in Australia and then on to Bexhill in Canada. The trip is estimated to be completed by July 2014. An exhibition of the project and the journey will take place at Bexhill Museum, between September and December, 2014; 175 years after Annie’s birth. It is hoped that the exhibition will then visit Australia and Canada the following year. If you would like to follow the project go to www.bexhilltobexhill.com where a blog will track and document progress and events. Also find ‘BexhillToBexhill’ on Facebook and ‘Bexhill2Bexhill’ on Twitter. It would be great to hear from you, either with your own stories of Bexhill, or what it means to you to live there.

Coping with arthritis Physical activity is just as effective as taking arthritis drugs in relieving the pain say leading arthritis specialists. Exercise – keep moving. Don’t be afraid to use your joints.
HEALTH & FITNESS
(www.arthritiscare.org.uk) includes eating a healthy diet to keep your weight down, as this will reduce the strain on your joints, and exercise. Types of exercise which seem to help people with arthritis include walking, swimming, and Tai Chi.
Arthritis, or inflammation of the joints, affects one in five adults in the UK. There are many different types of arthritis, the two most common being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis, which can affect people at any age, but is more common in older age, develops when changes occur to cartilage. Cartilage, the soft tissue on the ends of bones, becomes brittle and wears away causing the bones to become exposed and rub against each other. The deterioration of cartilage can also affect the shape of the joint so it no longer functions smoothly. You may notice a limp when you walk, or have trouble going up and down stairs because those movements put additional stress on the joint. A number of other things, such as fragments of cartilage in the joint fluid, or spurs which develop on the ends of bones, or inflammation can also cause pain. The second most common form of arthritis is Rheumatoid Arthritis, in which the immune system starts to attack the body instead of defending it. This results in stiff, painful and swollen joints. There is no known cause of arthritis and no one cure. If you’re experiencing joint pain it’s important to see your GP who will discuss the options for you. However all the positive advice from sources such as Arthritis Care
Tai Chi for Arthritis is a form of Tai Chi especially designed for people with arthritis and mobility problems. Dr. Paul Lam, a leading Tai Chi expert and physician developed this form after being diagnosed with arthritis. Today it is practised worldwide and several studies have shown Tai Chi to be effective in improving mobility, increasing muscle strength, helping with pain management and improving balance.
Sally Hemmings is a Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor and leads several classes at the Younique Wellbeing Studios in Bexhill. The classes are fun, enjoyable, and can be done seated or standing.

blackberry picking
LOCAL FOOD
Blackberry Liqueur (makes 1 litre bottle) 70cl of vodka 175g golden caster sugar 350g blackberries Place everything together in a large jar and seal. Give everything a good shake and leave on a kitchen shelf for three months. Every week give it a gentle shake until the three months are up and then strain out the blackberries and decant the remaining liqueur into a clean empty bottle.
Picking Tips Pick higher than dog height – enough said and far enough away from traffic fumes.
Elinor Hill. Right the way through September is the perfect time to go blackberry picking allowing you to soak up the late summer sun and instantly transporting yourself back to your childhood self. So gather together a group of friends, ideally with kids of similar ages and a picnic to share along the way and even the most vitamin D deficient teenager who so-hates-outdoorsy-things will love it.

Once you have found your secret blackberry picking spot keep it to yourself and start planning what you are going to cook with them, as they don’t keep for very long once picked. Although you can of course freeze them as soon as you get home ready to add to an apple crumble but I like to do the whole hunter gatherer thing by making treats for those long winter months ahead. If you make this now – sorry to mention it so early but you will have a great tipple to add to Champagne on Christmas morning – there said it. #bexhillianmag

GARDENING
GARDENING ADVICE FOR SEPTEMBER Can you feel it? No not the Jackson 5’s song! The early morning and late evening temperature drop – that means only one thing,
grass growth but the weeds are doing great; purple Selfheal, Yarrow, clover and the buttercup family to name a few! You can keep giving it a tidy by just taking care of the aforementioned.
However not all gloom and doom, there is still plenty of warmth and daylight to be enjoyed in the garden yet and that means... we had better get cracking.
September is a good time for laying or seeding a new lawn or making repairs. Any brown patches caused by drought will quickly green up by themselves when the rain comes and the temperatures fall – usually towards the end of the month. If we have had some decent rain you can strengthen your lawn up for Winter by applying an Autumn lawn feed, which is high in potassium. Do not be tempted to use the leftover Summer feed in your shed! It is high in nitrogen and this will only result in weak, soft growth, which will be prone to disease in the Autumn weather.
Autumn is coming!
Many gardens I have visited around Bexhill lately during this dry spell are absolutely thriving, with most the best I have ever seen them... the poor old lawn has suffered though so I have highlighted lawncare this month. General gardening: • Evergreen hedges can be given a late final trim before Winter. • Prune late Summer flowering shrubs. • Prune rambling roses that flower on the previous seasons growth by one third. • Climbing roses can be pruned once they have finished flowering; sideshoots from the main branches can be cut back to a couple of buds. • Prune Wisteria. • Do the splits! Divide herbaceous perennials. • Plant Spring bulbs, leave Tulips until November though. • Plant up containers with Hippeastrum (amaryllis) bulbs and prepared hyacinths for a Christmas display. (Yes you did read that right.) Maintenance It is a really good time to get all those little jobs around the garden you have spotted from the lounger done this month – shed, fence and greenhouse repairs. Lawns As you are aware July and August have been extremely dry and lawns are surprisingly managing to bear up quite well. Very little
This month is your last chance to use a lawn weedkiller to control perennial weeds such as daises and buttercups. Fruit and harvesting • Go blackberry picking! If you haven’t already there are lots of great hedgerows around Bexhill. • Busy time in the veg patch – harvest main crop spuds, beans, courgettes and toms. Date for your diary: • Wisley Flower Show, September 4-8th. • Closer to home, Sarah Raven Perch Hill, Brightling, Saturday, September 14th, 2013. Opening times: 9:30am-4:00pm. Visit the garden in Autumn to see the dahlias and cosmos in full flourish in the cutting garden... Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you need a hand please visit www.jwardgardens.co.uk Happy gardening!

news from mayor of bexhill The tickets for the show are now on sale and are selling like hot cakes. So roll up! roll up! Come and get them while you can! This charity concert is in support of the Bexhill Caring Community and it promises to be an occasion to remember with a unique ‘never to be seen again’ bill bringing together some cream areas of youth and community talent with professional artists who have local associations. There are dancers, singers, comedians, ventriloquist, people from the London shows like ‘Cats’ and ‘We will rock you’. The leader singer from an iconic British band ‘ The Stranglers’. Also a great compere, who is a consummate professional and guest artists. It will be a wonderful evening and too good to miss. Our little committee had a meeting with Jay Wootten and he is confident about our plans. The Manager of the Bexhill Caring Community, Jackie Haggerty and I went round the shops at Glynde Gap and have the promise of prizes for the raffle. It never ceases to amaze me, the generosity of this town. We are hitting Bexhill soon.
We need sponsors so if you wish to be a sponsor then please get in touch with Jay Wootten at Hastings Direct on 01424 738187 or on his mobile 07800 680631. We would be most grateful. This variety show is to make the citizens of Bexhill more aware of our services and in a way to thank all those past present and of course future supporters of our charity. It is the biggest charity in Bexhill and with the services we provide, we need all the support we can get.
BEXHILL NEWS
I was invited to the Little Common Horticultural Show and the Chairman was telling me of her concerns about the air miles that are used to bring out of season food into this country. She felt that the young today seem to take it for granted that you can get anything at any time of year. Her ambition is to introduce the young people to the joys of an allotment and start growing their own.
“It never ceases to amaze me, the generosity of this town.” This would be encouraged by the older generation who already have allotments and they would pass on their skills to whoever took up the offer. There are allotments available and B&Q want to have projects in the town. This is a good opportunity for youth leaders to take up this offer. B&Q say that food grown on the allotment will be shared between those who grow it and the food bank. A good scheme all round. DON’T FORGET! GET YOUR TICKETS FOR THE SHOW AND SPREAD THE WORD, BUT BE QUICK THOUGH, OR YOU MAY LOSE OUT!

BEXHILL – AN ARTIST’S VIEW Being an artist in Bexhill is truly a wonderful thing! No matter what time of year, Bexhill has everything I need to tap into my creativity. I’ve painted for most of my life and when I moved to Bexhill around five years ago it was like a breath of fresh air. Inspiration is all around me and in high Summer, like many I am naturally drawn to the seafront. The most inspiring for me is the sea and space it brings with it. Being lucky enough to live within walking distance is invaluable to my work. Most of my paintings draw inspiration from nature, whether its botanicals, seascapes or animals.
Inspiration is all around me and in high Summer... Around Bexhill I enjoy the many natural plants that are available to sketch and paint. By Galley Hill there is a wonderful display of nature at it’s best that has been there for years. The bright spiky greens of the wild sea cabbage dance amongst the distinctive red valerian which is in full flower during
ART & CRAFTS
the summer months. Capturing the bright pinks of the valerian takes some doing, but produces worthwhile results. Plants along the shoreline give me great subjects to draw and paint. Yellow poppies are abundant around the pebbles and shingle. This coastal perennial with its bright yellow petals are a striking contrast against the greys, blues, whites and browns of the pebbles on the beach. Their cheerful delicate petals are a joy to catch on a new crisp white sheet of watercolour paper. I love the way the first brush stroke glides on adding a watery splash of lemon yellow and cadmium yellow washes. All of these beautiful natural plants aid my creativeness. Further along is the De La Warr Pavilion and the colonnade which is of course a centre point for many artists. There’s not many lovelier sights than the bold white buildings of the colonnade against a backdrop of pure cobalt blue open skies in high summer. The different shades of blue delivered by the sky and sea compliment these striking Bexhill buildings. So the summer at Bexhill-on-Sea certainly brings its share of subject matter to satisfy this artist, and to enjoy it in this lovely weather as well.

fall for autumn fashion
FASHION
The sun is beating down outside, and it’s 26°C outside. So it seems bizarre that I am sitting here writing about autumn/winter fashion trends for the new season. However, as the nights begin to draw in and the summer sales draw to a close, the new collections are beginning to filter down to the High Street. So what are the trends for autumn winter? One of the main ones which is continuing from Summer, is the trend for pastel colours, and in particular, pink. For the new season, all shades of pink from palest pastel, through to bubblegum and berry, made an appearance on the catwalks. Another major trend was checks, plaids and tartan, which were all seen on the catwalks of designers such as YSL, Givenchy and Versace. Make sure your outfit features checks – whether it’s a jacket, coat, skirt, or simply a nod to it with a tartan or check bag. Also in evidence were animal prints and fur! With a nod to the 1980’s, punk made a reappearance! Less scary than the first time round, items featured raw, unfinished edges, the combination of unexpected fabrics, shiny patent, zips, spikes and stud. Leather was also popular, used in skirts, dresses and jackets. If you are tall, you can get away with the new masculine tailoring. Oversize coats and jackets all made an appearance on the catwalks of Vivienne Westwood, DKNY and Chanel, along with slouchy mannish trousers. Skirts were longer than in previous seasons, either just below the
knee, or to mid calf. These were dressed down, worn casually with a jumper or an oversized sweatshirt. Designers looked to the past for inspiration. Several design houses introduced items influenced by Dior’s New Look, with waspish waists and full skirts, whilst amazing creations were seen in the Alexander McQueen collection, including neck ruffles, gold brocade and lace! This dress from Benjamin Brown Vintage combines two of this season’s biggest trends, with a nod to Dior’s ‘New Look’ style and featuring Autumn’s most popular colour.

IF YOU HATE IT – CHANGE IT Diets DO work...
•
It’s what you do before AND after a diet that causes the problems.
•
It seems to be popular to knock dieting. Which is probably why we’ve got an obesogenic environment. You’ve all stopped dieting! Dieting is a FANTASTICALLY SUCCESSFUL method for losing FAT. However. Many of us have got into some very weird habits when it comes to losing weight from eating nothing but cabbage soup, to joining a gym for a week or two, to counting points, making shakes and buying books on the subject. Everything but doing what you should do to lose FAT, and in my experience its because you don’t know how to.

ART & CRAFT
art & craft on the south coast In last month’s edition, we talked about being creative and getting out there and starting making art and crafts, in this edition we will give you some advice on how best to market and sell your goods. It’s always tricky if you have not had any previous experience of this and there can be so many things to think about – such as the pricing, the merchandising, the retail outlets, the craft fairs, the customer service etc. It is a real minefield. Here are some tips on just pricing based on our own experiences – but this is not the complete guide and circumstances may vary from different persons, products and locations – so bear with us. One of the most difficult aspects of marketing your products is the pricing. There are no simple answers.. but as a crafter or an artist you need to consider how much time and skills you have invested in making your work. Pay yourself a decent wage for this activity. Sure some people do it for the love and for others, they cannot expect to charge too high for a similar item which can also be bought in an ordinary shop – but you have to be honest to yourself – you have made a product that is original and not mass produced and so it has a strong unique selling point (USP). Generally, at Starlings we advise our members who sell in our shop to price their products by taking into account the materials costs, the time spent to do the work and then the skills (training/expertise) needed to do the work. There is no magic formula but generally most people will work this out and then consider also the second most important thing when doing pricing – the market/customer base. If you put your product in a high end market/shop, in a well heeled location/ town.. then expect the costs and customers
to match this. If you are doing it in a charity church fete.. then again consider the costs and the customer base. Price your products accordingly. Some crafters price their items with the view that it is better to sell 10 cheap items than one expensive item. This is true but it also create what is known in retail as a ‘perceived value paradox’ – some people may think the item is too cheap and has no value and will not buy it – whereas if it is expensive it has the opposite effect. So check your customer base/market.. do some research.. ask what kind of people will be your customers and then price your items accordingly – a happy medium usually works best.
Price your products accordingly... There are lots more we can discuss about but if you have any queries then pop in and see one of us who can provide some advice on how best to price your goods.. Next month we will talk about where you can go to sell your products whether it be shops, fairs, or the internet. Happy making and selling.

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS
linkedin – connecting businesses This month I thought it would be useful to bring people right up to date with LinkedIn. For many years it was a great platform for finding employees or finding employment. But over recent years it has really integrated with social media generally and become a very useful social site. Best advice for this platform is to be professional and be current. Do not use any generic messages to send out for connections, personalise everything and be polite. Make sure that you have your profile fully up to date with a professional photograph in profile and not some quirky image or representation of you or your business. If you have a business then take the time to make sure you have a business page set up and take part in relevant groups that align with your interest areas. Groups have become a bit of a dumping ground for links and this is very annoying, so take the time to look through the posts and see what people are up to before you join, and if you cannot find one to suit, create and moderate your own. The best part about groups is that you can then group email and get your message out to a sizeable audience. I have found that groups are a little generic and not specific enough, but if you try to go specific it then becomes difficult to get an audience. As with all social media slow and steady wins the race. So it is worthwhile starting from scratch and do not be shy of being a strong moderator of the group, people will ultimately thank you for this action. There is a very nice job seeking part to Linked In now, but only use this when you have a 100% complete profile and a presentable CV that you can upload to the
Join the professionals and keep current... job sites. If you build it they will come, but don’t expect it to be quick. Make sure too, that the profile and details tie through all of your social media sites, people will find you out. You can connect with me personally here, http://www.linkedin.com/pub/paul-ricketts/ 14/906/2ba and if you mention Bexhillian I will be happy to add you and where possible refer your profile/business on to others.
