Let there be light! Here’s a warm November welcome to you all from my busy desk where I have a coffee on the go and a cosy, chunky knit jumper keeping me warm. Brrr! I don’t know about you but I feel quite chilly now. Also now that the clocks have gone back an hour we can all enjoy the lighter mornings and an extra hour in bed! On the subject of lighter mornings, if you do enjoy early strolls with the dog and making the most of our seafront, we are now fortunate enough to have a new author on board who will be sharing his knowledge of photography. His first offering is all about... ‘Lighting’. Thank you for joining us David. Do get in touch with me if you have any questions for David and I will certainly pass them on. Also check out our Shining Lights centre pages for the Bexhill Christmas Extravaganza on the 4th December! That is a night not to be missed, the big switch-on of the Christmas lights and so much entertainment going on. Also listed in our ‘What’s on..’ section are some Bonfire and Fireworks displays and we now have the details for the big New Year’s Eve bash, in aid of Bexhill Caring Community. Busy busy busy! See you next month, enjoy your read.

YOUR gardening STORIES
gardening advice for NOVEMBER Winter is on its way, leaves are covering the lawn and wind and rain are on the increase, so you might be thinking it’s time to put your boots in the corner and bolt the shed door. Not so quickly, just take a look below!
Lawns
We generally are still cutting into December, the grass will continue to grow in temperatures above 5°C (41°F), so if the weather remains mild it may be necessary to trim the lawn. • Ensure the cut is 3-5mm higher than in summer to prevent turf stress. On average, this means a cutting height of around 4cm (1.5in). • Keep off the lawn when it is sodden or frozen – you will damage it very quickly. • Rake up fallen leaves regularly - left in place they will encourage fungal disease and bare patches come the Spring.
Landscaping
A perfect time of year for any major change in the garden adding paths, patios, structures & fencing, you will have a great head start in time for Spring.
Trees and Shrubs
Bare-root deciduous hedging plants, trees and shrubs become available this month. They need to be planted promptly, before they dry out. They can be heeled into the soil for a short period if conditions aren’t suitable for planting. It is an ideal time to plant roses. Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously growing otherwise new introductions may suffer from replant diseases (rose sickness). Pruning and renovation of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out from now throughout the dormant season. It is easier to see what you are doing when the branches have no leaves.
add some grit to your soil if needed. Squirrels love them so placing a net over a pot might help. Pot up amaryllis bulbs, water, keep them in a warm place (near a radiator is ideal) and cross your fingers that they will flower in time for Christmas. Finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi, crocuses and those elegant alliums - theoretically they should be in the ground by now, but they are fairly forgiving if you have left it late!
Birds and wildlife
As more different species of birds will be arriving from the north in order to find a warmer climate (yes believe it or not we are warmer than a lot of places) it is a good idea to put out different kinds of food to suit them all. If you’ve made a bonfire for Guy Fawkes night please check that it does not contain any wildlife such as hedgehogs just before lighting it!
Happy gardening! Ian Ward.

A PHOTOGRAPHERS VIEW - LIGHT!
photography YOUR STORIES
“Photography” is derived from the Greek “photos “and “graphe”, which translates as “drawing with light”. For us photographers, no matter how brilliant our cameras are, the hard truth is, if we don’t appreciate and understand light, our photographs will always lack that “wow” factor.
the sky, the light is diffused, lacking the harsh edge of summer mid-day light. Shadows are longer with the transition from dark to light being soft and blurry. Autumn clouds act as a giant diffuser, further softening the light, and, with patience, you may see dramatic light rays illuminating the horizon.
By the time you read this, the clocks will have gone back, the days are getting shorter and colder, and it is so tempting to be in a warm house with a good book. Or maybe watching that re-run of Raiders of the Lost Ark? Anything other than getting cold with a camera. The thing is, you could be missing out on photographic gold-dust on the Bexhill sea front.
The best photographic accessories you can have this time of year are a booklet of tidetables and a pair of wellies. At low tide, the sunlight will rake across the beach, highlighting the gentle contours of the sand, before setting over Beachy Head. Wait for the afterglow of the setting sun, add in a hint of underexposure, (check the histogram!) and you’re on your way to a picture that you will be proud of.
During summer, the best times for landscape photography are an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. At these times the light is soft, with glorious warmth that flatters any subject. In the autumn, these “golden” hours last throughout the day. With the sun low in

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
children’s development (age: 3-5 yrs) So let’s look at the next stage of development for our children, and how to best help them accomplish what’s important at this stage: to find practical ways to show unconditional love and acceptance, according to what they really need.
Discovering a New World (Early childhood: 3-5 years)
When life is an adventure; everything is new and exciting! Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it’s the lifeblood of children in this stage. Each new discovery helps them grow in several key areas: Physically They love to demonstrate how strong they are, flexing their muscles to convince any doubters – they need a safe place to run, jump and climb, not only for the physical exercise needed by their growing bodies, but allowing them to make daily discoveries about what they can do. They are fascinated with their body parts, asking lots of questions in the most embarrassing places, but in all sincerity and innocence; answer their questions with age-appropriate facts and truthful information. They are great imitators – give a 3yr old a football after he’s watched a game on TV, and he’ll run back and forth shouting to his imaginary team-mates, convinced he’s the greatest, fastest, strongest player ever. He has no idea (and doesn’t care) what the rules or objectives of the game are! Provide opportunities for your child to imitate the adults around with a child-sized shopping trolley or pretending to shave like Daddy. This penchant for imitating behaviour is one of the dangers of watching TV, because they have no concept of the danger of much of what they’re watching. Mentally The stage of “Why? Why? Why?” - this is a tool to help them learn to cope with and make sense of the world around them; answer their questions with patience
and kindness. It is a time for learning to balance fantasy and imagination with reality – this is the time to read lots to your children, teach about relationships through telling stories (especially loved if you bring the child themselves into the story) and play lots of “Let’s pretend”; join in their “tea-parties” the “school”, the “hospital”, “You be the baby and I’ll be the mummy” and let their imaginations develop.
Feelings
Although a 2yr old doesn’t worry about the rest of the world, assuming they are the centre of the universe, 3yr olds begin to make the discovery they’re not! We can help them discover that others have feelings, desires and opinions different to theirs, that need to be respected and cared about. Help your children develop a “feeling” vocabulary, recognising and identifying their emotions. As we attach value to their feelings and opinions, it sets an example to follow by acknowledging when we have hurt them, by being willing to apologise and ask for their forgiveness. How are you and your child handling the rapid physical, and cognitive development and discoveries of this New World that beat Christopher Columbus?

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS
the best ways to save on inheritance tax George Osborne fulfilled an election promise in the recent Budget to lift main family homes worth up to £1million out of inheritance tax if they are left to children or grandchildren. However, the way it works is more complicated than it sounds so people are understandably thinking about where this leaves them in terms of inheritance planning. In line with these changes, the Government is also still working out the details of an ‘inheritance tax credit’, so people who own an expensive home and want to sell it before they die can still benefit from the changes. This is to avoid elderly people skewing the housing market by staying put rather than moving to a smaller property or into a care home. The tax overhaul of last April produced the pension freedom reforms giving over-55s greater control over how they save, spend and invest their retirement pots. People are stashing more into their pensions and trying hard to preserve what is already in there, according to recent research among over-50s by Investec Wealth & Investment.
How to make the best use of these changes The good news is that you may not need to move house to benefit from the full inheritance allowance. The bad news is that the full allowance may not be £1million depending on your circumstances. If we look at what we know so far about the new ‘Main Residence Nil Rate Band’, the Chancellor was eager to stress that £1million could now be passed onto your children tax free, but in practice a number of conditions must be met for that to happen. Firstly, the £1million is made up of the £325,000 standard nil rate band for both husband and wife or civil partners, plus an additional Main Residence Nil Rate Band of £175,000 for both husband and wife.
Firstly, the £1million is made up of the £325,000 standard nil rate band for both husband and wife or civil partners, plus an add-itional Main Residence Nil Rate Band of £175,000 for both husband and wife. The total of those allowances, assuming all are fully available, is £1million. However, the MRNRB will be introduced in April 2017 at only £100,000 and increase in stages to £175,000 by April 2020. It will also be means-tested, with estates above £2million losing £1 of their MRNRB for every £2 their estate exceeds £2million. In practice, this means that to pass down £1million to your children you must: a) Be married or in a civil partnership b) Own a house worth £350,000 or more c) Have a total estate of less than £2million d) Die after April 2020, or your spouse must die after that, because on first death any unused nil rate band is transferred to the surviving spouse. The key point to all of this is that your property only needs to be worth £350,000 to fully utilise the MRNRB, so you may not need to move house after all. You could waste your MRNRB if the property is left to someone other than your children or spouse on death. With pensions as the alternative, it used to be the case that you had to die before age 75 having not touched your pension, in order to receive the fund tax free, any funds remaining on death were taxed at 55 per cent.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
customer service off-line & on-line At the basis of all advertising is communication. Long before the internet, television, print media and even radio, we had no choice but to communicate via word of mouth. And to this day it still remains a valuable promotional method for businesses. Consumers are influenced by what they are told by their peers about a particular product or service. If someone isn’t not happy with a product/service they react by no longer using that product/service – and voicing their negative experience to their friends and family – the exact opposite responses that a business is looking for.
Customer service off-line & on-line
I experienced great customer service off-line last week and went straight onto Twitter to express my gratitude (tagging the business and using the hashtag #CustomerService) They tweeted back, pleased that I had a positive experience. The week before, I went to Twitter and vented that I was still on hold after 30 mins to an automated phone system (I tagged the business) The complaint got a fair bit of engagement from other accounts, also wanting to show their annoyance. Our experiences off-line were being discussed on-line, our mutual frustration fuelling each other’s fire.
If your business isn’t already – Get on social media now. Be on the platforms that your customers are and start to listen to what they are saying. Remember to also watch for your brand being mentioned even when not directly tagged and notified. Where your reputation could be tarnished through word of mouth, it can potentially be damaged beyond repair through social media, you need to be vigilant. If you are unfortunate enough to get negative reviews or posts about your business try and stay calm. Provide a public response initially and direct them to communicate directly with you via email or by telephone. Let the audience see that you are dealing with the complaint, but take it away from the public eye. • • •
Don’t neglect to respond Don’t delete or hide the post Don’t be defensive
Treat each complaint individually and make your best judgment. Handle it well; you lessen the chances of a small fire being fuelled by others and getting out of control.

Customer service expectations are increasing year by year and customers are wanting a quick response, they are turning to social media to do that. The Ombudsman Services website states
“… social media gives customers the opportunity to campaign directly if they have a problem. More than 5.2 million complaints were made last year through social media …..”
WOW! Are you ready to act should a complaint be made about your business on-line?

Happy 80th Anniversary De La Warr Pavilion! Saturday 12 December 10am-5pm
On 12 December 1935 the Pavilion, the first public building to be built in the Modernist style in the UK, opened its doors to the people of Bexhill and beyond. Pioneering in design and structure, revolutionary in spirit and aspirational in its vision, like no other building of its age it captured people’s imagination and was soon dubbed “The People’s Palace”. On Saturday 12 December 2015 we return to that day to recreate some of the excitement, entertainment, and atmosphere of this historic event. Come and join us to celebrate with music of the age, vintage cars, Punch and Judy shows, floral displays, pop up events and activities and 1930s cocktails! The building – and the staff – will be dressed 1930s style, and we invite you to join us for a fantastic day for all the family to remember.

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE
The increasing life expectancy and wills Decennial Life Tables, who release statistics each decade regarding life expectancy figures for England and Wales, have recently published data that could raise key concerns over pensions and will writing for both current and future generations. The statistics reveal that life expectancy has essentially doubled for men and women between the years 1841 and 2011. During the early nineteenth century, the average male was expected to reach 40.2 years, compared with 42 years for women. These figures changed drastically over the next 170 years, showing that in 2011 the life expectancy was 79 for men and 82.8 for women. The data also shows that the average life expectancy has increased for people at varying ages too. For example, women aged 65 in 1941 would have an estimated 11.5 years life expectancy left, compared to 20.9 years in 2011. This information is especially revealing when considering pensions and legal documents such as wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). The impact on pensions demonstrates that those who currently enter retirement aged 65 will have to spread their pension out over double the length of time compared with when the State Pension was first introduced in 1908. Accordingly, this may have a detrimental impact upon the elderly population’s legal finances.
Less of an estate may be left as inheritance due to an increased need for finances during a person’s lifetime. Going hand in hand with a rising national age expectancy is the need for a professional will, however figures from The Law Society show that over one-third of those age over 55 in the UK have not written one. Arguably it is now easier than ever to create a will, however this is an aspect of modern life that many understandably do not wish to face. With the current life expectancy age being higher than ever, the importance of wills and LPAs cannot be more highly encouraged. Clients also may be more vulnerable when at significantly older ages, requiring practitioners to be more vigilant to risk and capacity. A longer time spent in retirement requires greater financial planning both for during a lifetime and for when passing on an estate during probate. As with all financial and legal documents, professional advice is always strongly recommended.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES
enjoy a more stress free home Enjoy a more relaxed and stress free home. With so many stressors in our lives we all need a retreat, a nurturing environment where we can chill out and relax.
Brighten up and calm your environment by arranging some fresh flowers in a vase, and enjoying the colour and scent. Why not treat your loved one to a bunch of flowers as a token of appreciation, gratitude and love?
When you come in at the end of the day do you feel that your home is your sanctuary? Or do you feel overwhelmed by all the outstanding things you need to attend to? Is your home a place to truly relax and unwind? If it isn’t, maybe now is the time to make some changes. Start by having a good look around you. Is your home an oasis of calm, or is it untidy and makes you feel stressed when you look at it? Living in a messy, cluttered environment is a sure way to feel stressed. Try to keep on top of small chores, and not to let things build up. Put things away as you go along, instead of making one task into two. Pay attention to lighting. This time of the year it’s important to get as much light as we can to stave off the “winter blues.” Studies have shown that the presence of natural light indoors has a really positive effect on health, and stress in particular. In the evenings, a calm environment with mood lighting can help us relax and ultimately prepare for sleep. I often suggest to my clients that they create a personal ”sanctuary.” It may be a quiet sitting area or a corner that you can make your own. A Buddha, incense burner and candle can create the ambience of a sacred place. Some photos of loved ones or a favourite pet might also make you feel good. Visit this calm space every day and meditate or sit quietly. Allow yourself time to unwind, reflect and recharge.
Until next time.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING
Coping with... back pain at work Back pain is the leading cause of long-term sickness in the UK and was responsible for more than 15 million lost work days in 2013. Absenteeism is estimated to be costing many UK companies billions of pounds every year, whilst stress is one of the leading causes of staff absences in the workplace. Sitting in an office chair for prolonged periods of time can contribute to lower back, shoulder and neck pain. Our bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle, and yet in the face of such a technologically driven society, we often feel there is no choice but to spend large portions of the day sitting in one spot. The average healthy person’s back will take a beating from this inactive lifestyle, leading to increased pain, stiffness and long-term problems. Our computer driven lifestyle is taking preference over our physical wellbeing, unfortunately this is resulting in physical and mental problems. People who work in offices are more likely to suffer chronic back pain than people who have a physically demanding job! Benefits of wellness initiatives in the workplace are being discovered, and can be as simple as incorporating a chair massage treatment into the working day. The benefits of chair massage for employees are similar to the benefits of getting a full body massage at a spa, but in the convenience of the workplace or an alternative location. Sitting in a massage chair opens up the back muscles, relieves strain on the neck and provides a gentle respite for eyes usually glued to a computer monitor.
Even 15 minutes of massage to the neck, back, arms and hands can increase your circulation, reduce stress, return energy levels and help keep the body injury free. In addition, chair massage can play a part in keeping employees healthy and happy. It can also play a very important role in preventing and treating the pain and numbness associated with excessive keyboard and mouse use.

biscuit baking time! You’ve never made biscuits! They are so easy to make, can be baked with the children (or your partner) and take only minutes can be baked and eaten by your family or you can bake them for your friends as Christmas Gifts placed in decorated airtight tins or glass jars.

of the nuts and then chop others I find the taste comes out much stronger and yet you actually use far less of the nuts. You need very little equipment to make biscuits baking paper to line the baking sheets, cutters – we have two very good shops in Bexhill who carry a wide range of cutters – a palate or long flat knife to lift the biscuits onto the cooling rack and your basic ingredients and your choice of flavourings.
For your Biscuits you will need: • 100g margarine • 50g caster sugar • 175g plain flour – if you wish to make chocolate biscuits use 150g plain flour and 25g cocoa • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 150/Gas 2
The recipe which I have given to you can be flavoured depending upon your personal tastes using fruit, nuts, chocolate or spices we all have our own personal favourites – cranberry and orange, spiced biscuits with cinnamon, mixed spices and dried fruits (a mini taste of Christmas), lemon and almonds are all popular choices. I think it’s nice to bake a biscuit and then use a different flavoured sugar or icing to add more interest. I am a big fan of nuts, Pistachio’s in particular, if you grind some
Cream the margarine and sugar together until the mixture changes colour and becomes pale and fluffy, add the egg yolk and vanilla, add your choice of flavourings, nuts, fruits etc then mix in the flour – you may well need to use your hands to bring the dough together into a soft ball. Chill in the fridge for an hour before rolling out onto a floured surface and cutting into your desired shapes and bake for 25 minutes until golden brown.
