CHUTNEY beside the sea!

LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES

As the weather turns all of our thoughts turn to warm foods and of course then Christmas looms into all of our thoughts. It is nice to fill our cupboards with homemade goodies to eat as the Winter progresses and one of the easiest things to make and enjoy is without doubt Chutney. Chutney was originally a relish made in India of fresh fruits and spices and is still enjoyed in India with almost every meal. When it was brought back to England with the colonists it was absorbed into the English menu. Chutney can be made from most fruits, apricots, apples, plums, mango, aubergine, marrow just to name a few! Chutney can be made and when stored in cool dry conditions will remain in perfect condition, once open it should be refrigerated and consumed within a month. One of my favourite chutneys is made from cooking apples. Once made the chutney should be decanted into clean, dry, sterilised jars and sealed. Pretty ribbon and labels make it a nice inexpensive present to give to friends to enjoy at Christmas time.

Apple Chutney • 1 1/2 kg cooking apples, peeled and diced • 750g light muscovado sugar • 500g raisins • 2 medium onions, finely chopped • 2 tsp mustard seeds • 2 tsp ground ginger • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp salt • 700 ml cider vinegar

Combine all ingredients in a large heavy saucepan. Bring mixture to the boil over a medium heat, then simmer uncovered, stirring frequently (it can stick and burn if you are not careful), for 30/40 minutes, or until thick and pulpy. Remove from the heat, leave to cool before transferring into clean jars and sealing. Enjoy with a selection of cheeses for a really delicious lunch or dessert!

YOUR STORIES gardening

gardening advice for NOVEMBER Winter is on its way, leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase so you might be thinking it’s time to bolt the shed door and brush the mud off those wellies. Not so quickly, just take a look below!

Finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi, crocuses and those elegant alliums - theoretically they should be in the ground by now, but they are fairly forgiving if you have left it late!

Lawns

Grass will continue to grow in temperatures above 5°C (41°F), so if the weather remains mild it may be necessary to trim the lawn. Ensure the cut is 3-5mm higher than in summer to prevent turf stress. On average, this means a cutting height of around 4cm (1.5in). Keep off the lawn when it is sodden or frozen – you will damage it very quickly. Rake up fallen leaves regularly - left in place they will encourage fungal disease and bare patches.

Trees and Shrubs

Bare-root deciduous hedging plants, trees and shrubs become available this month. They need to be planted promptly, before they dry out. They can be heeled into the soil for a short period if conditions are not suitable for planting. It is an ideal time to plant roses. Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously growing otherwise new introductions may suffer from replant diseases (rose sickness). Pruning and renovation of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out from now throughout the dormant season. It is easier to see what you are doing when the branches have no leaves.

General maintenance tasks

Tulip bulbs can be planted out now, remember they like good drainage to stop them rotting so add some grit to your soil if needed. Pot up amaryllis bulbs, water, keep them in a warm place (near a radiator is ideal) and cross your fingers that they will flower in time for Christmas.

Birds and wildlife

As more different species of birds will be arriving from the north in order to find a warmer climate (yes believe it or not we are warmer than a lot of places) it is a good idea to put out different kinds of food to suit them all. If you have made a bonfire for Guy Fawkes night please check that it does not contain any wildlife such as hedgehogs just before lighting it! Happy Gardening!

SAVING FOR RETIREMENT Every month, the directors at mcphersons share some useful financial tips especially for Bexhillian readers. This is the second part of the editorial offering advice about saving for retirement.

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

The main alternative to an annuity is to keep your pension invested in the stock market and take income as you need it. This runs the risk of the ups and downs of the stock market.

50s

Saving for retirement should now become serious. From age 55 you will be able to access your pension. In theory you could retire then. In reality, most people will continue working and plan carefully, saving as much as possible for the future as other expenses cease. Plan by working out how much income you’ll need when you eventually stop work. Pensions do work as tax-planning tools after your ISA allowance is used. Consider for every £2 you earn above £100,000, you lose £1 of your tax-free personal allowance (currently £10,000). Contributing to a pension can reduce your taxable income so you retain this tax break. Focus though on the £1.25m lifetime cap on saving. Someone aged 50 with £525,000 in a pension would push past the lifetime allowance by age 65 if the fund grew at 7 per cent a year even without additional contributions, according to pension provider Standard Life. There is a currently a £40,000 limit on annual contributions to pensions..

60s

Many people will continue working, into their sixties. With the new rules from next April, you have instant access to your entire pension fund, how and when you withdraw becomes a major decision. An annuity will guarantee a stream of income payments for life, but the cost of purchase is high. For example, current rates pay just £6,000 a year for each £100,000 of savings. Shop around for the best rates, as they do vary between insurers and declare all health conditions to obtain the highest income.

Photo by Kate Hawkins. The capital should be protected, a well-diversified set of dividend-paying funds and shares can provide a decent income, so long as you can put up with the fluctuating value of the underlying capital. With the introduction of the new flat-rate state pension, probably in 2016, you will need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions to benefit from the full £155 a week (it is possible to “buy” extra qualifying years). Check with the Pension Service by calling 0800 731 7898 to ensure you have the full amount. The value of your investment and the income from it can go down as well as up and you may not get back the original amount invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator for future results.

Coping with... (SAD) SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression and sadness that occurs in the darker seasons of autumn and winter. Common symptoms of SAD are generally feeling low, short-tempered and antisocial, weight gain, less energy and a general need for more sleep. Many people suffer from a ‘winter depression’ on varying levels which is mainly thought to be caused by a lack of sunlight, though women are more likely to suffer from SAD than men. As with other types of depression it is worth talking to your doctor but following that, there are steps you can take yourself. As much as it can feel like a great challenge to the sufferer to overcome the various symptoms, it is worth the effort. As one of the primary causes is very likely the lack of sunlight, many people find that consuming a vitamin D supplement can help keep the ‘winter blues’ at bay. The added benefits of vitamin D are preventing serious illness, aiding your immune system, improving lung function and reducing the risk of arthritis. Many people find that ‘light therapy’ (using very bright lights, purpose built for SAD sufferers) and daylight light bulbs are very helpful in feeling perkier when it is darker, helping boost mood and aid a deeper sleep. Exercise, and yoga in particular, has been shown to help with various types of depression.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

The endorphins from exercise, in general boosting the mind. The specific ability of yoga helps calm and alleviate stress and mental discomfort, keeping the psyche as happy as possible. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter which helps maintain the balance in our moods. Yoga has been found to increase levels of serotonin and improve mood

levels, with reports of moods improving after yoga classes being commonplace. The real key is regular practice, and though motivation can be a challenge in the winter, just rolling out a yoga mat for 10 minutes a day should start to help relieve symptoms.

LIFE LOCAL FAMILY CHARITIES

PARENTING – APPROVAL & ATTENTION Why children desperately need our approval and attention... Parenting with intimacy means really getting to know our children and consistently giving to meet their emotional needs. Let’s look at two more emotional needs...

hobbies and friends to spend time learning about their world of make-believe, stories, toys, silly games, technology, thrill-seeking, heartaches, disappointments, strange music and insecurities.

Approval

We all need building up or affirming for who we are, not what we do. Without this, there is a danger we become insecure, lacking in confidence or workaholic and performanceorientated. After all, we are human beings not human doings! Affirm your children, both privately and publicly, as being of great value to you, e.g. “I’m so proud you’re my daughter” or “I couldn’t have a more special son”. Identify character strengths of each child, and praise them for these qualities: “Theo, you’re one of the most responsible people I know” or “Your thoughtfulness really pleases me Charis”. This helps free them from the need to seek approval by competing with their siblings or peers. As they grow in the security of our approval, they will mature without fear of failure. Think – how often when describing my child to others, in their presence, do I use a warm tone of voice, with positive, affirming words? Practice doing so!

Attention

Whatever their age, it’s impossible to meet a child’s need for attention without entering their world and investing meaningful T-I-M-E. We have to leave our adult world of career,

It’s listening carefully to your child, without interrupting or finishing sentences, giving undivided focus, without one eye on the screen or a finger on the keypad. Responding with “can’t you see I’m busy” can produce feelings of unimportance or worthlessness, but instead try, “I must finish this ironing, but in 15mins I’d love to come and read your essay properly” and then following through. This is yet another good lesson in delayed gratification for your child! Think – what is your child’s ‘world’? For each child, name at least three aspects of their world; their likes, interests and passions.

If you can’t, start finding out! Susie Marriott. Susie is a grandmother and a retired relationship trainer. #bexhillianmag

STORIES GAMING TIPS YOUR AND REVIEWS

GTA Online: Update 1.18 could introduce both military DLC and Halloween Seasonal content on the way. Recently, in the source code of Grand Theft Auto V, a military DLC has been found and is likely going to be appearing soon... Potentially in the next game update... As revealed in the source code, a legitimate military themed content update for Grand Theft Auto Online has been discovered and could be arriving in the next Game Update, 1.18. Armistice day is upcoming and we can safely presume that this will be an appropriate time to release the update. Although there is no current name for this content update, it can be speculated that the update will feature new weapons and vehicles; potentially including the Hydra jet which has recently been updated in the source code by Rockstar Games, new military face paints and clothing items for online and singleplayer characters to purchase in game. Some of the cut military vehicles may be returning in this update. Because this is leaked information, we are unable to confirm anything, but since this information is legitimate and previous source code leaks have been true, its very likely that this will be coming soon. Also arriving later this month will be the Halloween seasonal content for the game, which Rockstar have yet to surprise us with. So you can expect to see more new content towards the end of the month. Though a Halloween update hasn’t been launched yet, there are some exclusive memorable Radio T-shirts in game from San Andreas to celebrate it’s anniversary. In addition to this, players will be able to obtain double GTA$, and rp when playing through San Andreas Throwback jobs. This will be available from the 24th -26th Oct.

Developers: Rockstar Games Publishers: 2K games. Picture Source: www.rockstargames.com/V/ Last but not least, next month will mark the release of Grand Theft Auto V on Next Gen consoles featuring a wide range of improvements, new features and new content. On Next Gen consoles, the official release date from the most recent GTA trailer confirms a November 18th 2014 release date, however leaked product packaging suggests that the game will be arriving on the PS4 on November 4th (This is currently unconfirmed, although we expect that it ma be arriving slightly earlier on this platform). The release date for hesits will also share the November 18th date, coinciding with the launch of the Next Gen versions (providing that it is not delayed again). PC players will be able to get their hands on GTA V on January 27th 2015, as the game needs some extra polishing up on this platform. Returning GTA Players will have access to new exclusive content such as weapons and vehicles, and pre-ordering the game will grant players 1,000,000 GTA$, 500,000 GTA$ for Single-player and 500,000 GTA$ for Grand Theft Auto Online. Will you be returning to GTA V, or purchasing the game for the first time when it is released?

BEXHILL – AN ARTIST’S VIEW November is not necessarily a month you would automatically think of beachcombing, however if you manage to catch a clear day then I recommend it! Battling with the fierce whipping winter wind and rain is not ideal conditions for a walk on Bexhill beach however if you manage to avoid the showers and get a clear fresh bright hour or so then take the opportunity to explore our lovely

For the painter there is of course endless subjects – pebbles, rock pools, tides, horizons and groynes. There is also the ever popular driftwood that lands on the shoreline in many different sizes. To depict the driftwood I might first give a wash of flesh tint, then choose from yellow ochre, burnt umber and maybe raw umber. Capturing the wildness of the ocean is easy in November. I love the look of the old eroded groynes, where time and tide and sun have literally taken it’s toll on them. They make for a good picture to paint with good composition. I would use paynes gray, violet and a little chinese white mixed to capture the exact shades needed for this wood. For the metal guard protector at the top which has become rusty over time I would use a mixture of sienna and cadmium red orange to depict the seeping rust. This could work for the bolts as well. The lines on the wood makes for an amazing texture.

local beach. The experience is more exhilarating and the tides this month produce exciting finds as they can be quite high and leave behind many treasures to discover. Bexhill beach by Channel View East is a good spot to go to .My dogs like it there when we go throwing stones for them to chase there. The November low tides when fully out reveal a myriad of rock pools, with all their delights.

If you walk along the whole of the beach you can find many groynes that have been shaped by the tide over the years, they are curved and smooth in a beautiful way. I like it where the smaller stones often get caught in between the gaps of the groynes – the tiny blues, greys and whites. Sometimes you can see the daylight shining through them. This a popular photo for photography enthusiasts and artists alike. Enjoy!

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

disabled people’s gifts & inheritance Receiving an inheritance can be a disappointment for a disabled person. Money from an inheritance or a gift will normally be counted as an asset for means-tested benefits or services. For a disabled person who receives benefits and services, this can mean that a once in a lifetime opportunity to lead a fuller or more comfortable life makes little difference. The money simply replaces state-funding benefits and services until their fund drops below the excluded capital level, when they go back on to means-tested benefits. A Vulnerable Beneficiary Trust or Disabled Person’s Trust can be a way of ring fencing the windfall so that means-tested benefits are not affected. In practice this device is rarely used by will-drafters, a s the qualification and drafting requirements of such a trust have, to date, been complex. Not only can such trusts avoid means-testing, but they also avoid the harsh tax regime that now applies to UK trusts. This includes inheritance tax, which confusingly applies to assets put into trust for the benefit of the living. Inheritance tax can result in substantial tax liabilities becoming due on payments in and out of the trust and periodical charges. In short, where it does apply, it can be very expensive. The position in relation to capital gains tax (CGT), though, was a disincentive to the use of these trusts. The position is complex, but in the past CGT might be due on the death of the disabled beneficiary. However, the Finance Bill 2014, which is on the cusp of being enacted, is looking to address this problem. The Finance Act 2014 is to extend sections 72 and 73 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act to include disabled beneficiaries where the beneficiary has no entitlement to the income of the trust.

This extension of the CGT ‘uplift’ provisions is long awaited and provides a level playing field in terms of CGT liabilities on the death between these disabled beneficiaries and others. Setting up such trusts should be done before the person receives the money, otherwise there may be problems with the DWP deprivation of capital rules. The money should be given to the trust not the person. In the past the benefits of these Vulnerable Beneficiary Trusts have only been available for a few disabled people. They included those claiming Attendance Allowance or receiving middle or higher rate care components of Disability Living Allowance (DLA). However, changes to the benefits regime, whereby DLA is being replaced by Personal Independence Payments (PIP) are underway. It is widely thought that when these changes eventually take effect less people will qualify for benefits. However, it is proposed that all those receiving PIPs will qualify for these trusts, whereas before lower rate DLA claimants did not. It should be noted that there are other complex qualification rules as to the nature of the trust, in particular how income and capital are dealt with. Trust deeds need to be carefully drawn up to ensure qualification, or substantial liabilities will result. This is a complicated area of the law but recent and coming changes do open up new possibilities for people with disabilities to really benefit from gifts and legacies.

the canadian training school Bexhillians long standing support for local institutions: the Canadian Training School and the De La Warr Pavilion. It cannot escape the notice of Bexhillians that the De La Warr Pavilion now attracts some really high calibre performers and performances. A glance at the forthcoming programme reveals names like the singer David Gray and comedians Frank Skinner and David Mitchell. The fact that the De La Warr can now attract such acts is undoubtedly a testament to the support of Bexhillians for this local treasure. However, this is not a new phenomenon. Before the De La Warr Pavilion was even built, Bexhillians would turn out in force to support an institution that was held in such a high regard that it attracted visits from royalty. The Canadian Training School, based in Bexhill between 1917 and 1919, came to be recognized as the leading Canadian training facility in Britain. This reputation was confirmed when, in June 1917 and November 1918, His Royal Highness, The Duke of Connaught – GovernorGeneral of Canada, 1911-1916 – visited Bexhill to inspect the School’s cadets and training programme. The Governor General is the monarch’s representative in Canada and exercises all duties and responsibilities of the monarch both in Canada and abroad. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and Earl of Sussex, was the third son of Queen Victoria. The Duke had a long-standing affinity with Canada, having been stationed there in the 1860s. It seems fitting given his Earl of Sussex title that he should come to Sussex to inspect Canadian soldiers. On Friday 8 June 1917, the Duke visited Bexhill for the first time. No announcement was made prior to his visit, yet a large crowd of locals gathered at Egerton Park to welcome him and watch the Inspection Parade and march past held on Park Road. On Wednesday 20 November 1918, the Duke returned to Bexhill. Again, a big

crowd gathered, this time outside the Metropole Hotel. Bexhillians were very supportive of the Canadians; their sports events, the theatre performances and music events were always well attended. This is still evident in the present day. That same enthusiasm shown towards the Canadian schools during the First World War is apparent in the support shown for the De La Warr Pavilion; long may it continue.

FASHION

Autumn/Winter fashions celebrate the 1960s

If the 1960s is your favourite fashion era you’re in for a treat this autumn/winter. Designers have looked to this exciting time for inspiration with ladylike collections offering something for everyone. Louis Vuitton gave us A-line shift dresses, layered with polo necks and paired with knee high, shiny leather boots. The A-line trend was also evident on the catwalks with simple, elegant skirts which sat just above the knee. Valentino brought us brightly printed tunics; elsewhere there was an abundance of pastel shades and graphic prints. As temperatures drop, wrap up in a cocoon coat for cosiness. Shoes were very sixties-influenced with pointed pumps, knee length boots and patent ankle boots. If you don’t fancy original 1960s footwear, there are some great sixties’ inspired styles on the High Street. Clarks has gorgeous patent leather ankle from

wd!9

boots and their Orla Kiely range of shoes really hits the mark. Elsewhere, Mango, LK Bennett and Boden are all worth a look. Pull the look together with a ladylike boxy bag and sixties-influenced make up – Bambi effect eyes teamed with pink lips. The best thing about this look is that you can go all out sixties, or just give a nod to the trend. Original sixties clothing is still easy to come by and inexpensive, or you can pick and mix vintage and High Street for a totally unique look.
