Coping with... Skin problems
Eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, sun and radiation therapy damaged skin as well as very dry and sensitive skin, can have an adverse effect on self esteem and feeling good about yourself, which in turn helps to give you the confidence to face the ups and downs of every day life. Hence, it is important to ensure skin products that you use are chosen wisely. There is the danger that we daily massage into our skin a host of chemicals, which include burdening our bodies with toxins thus sapping our energy as the body strives to cope – an added hindrance if you are recovering from illness or trauma, or looking for optimum health. Get into the habit of reading labels on the products you are tempted to buy and avoid products containing chemicals such as SLS, SLES, Petrochemicals, DEA, MEA, TEA, PEG, Phenoxyethanol, Parabens, synthetic preservatives and colours. It’s good to think that what you put on your skin you would be happy to eat. This should Ideally be in the form of natural ingredients from plant, vegetable or mineral sources – fresh, natural, and simply made. A hand made process that ensures all the active properties and nutrients in the ingredients are preserved, and naturally enhanced in
the final product is ideal. Ingredients carefully chosen such as Tamanu oil can have anti-aging and regenerating properties. When thinking about skin care, don’t ignore a well chosen deodorant – Aluminum and Paraben free. Natural skin products can also be very economical to use as a small amount goes a long way. A tip to remember, is that if using a toner spray under a moisturizer, you can reduce the amount of moisturizer, by applying it before toner is completely dry. Develop a strict and hygienic facial skincare routine – cleanse and scrub, tone, and moisturize. In Bexhill, we are very fortunate to have our very own source of 100% Natural skin care products, with most of the ingredients organically certified by the soil association, that are made locally. ‘YouNique Wellbeing Studios’ Bexhill are privileged to have these in stock, to enhance your health & wellbeing. The team invite you to contact them to sample, and help you find the right ‘Unica Cosmetics’ products to suit your individual needs. Whether it be to calm, sooth, heal, or purely to give the tender loving care that your skin so rightly deserves.

BEXHILL – AN ARTIST’S VIEW I love nature. And I love painting nature. I have a real passion for it, for as long as I can remember. Luckily living in Bexhill there is an abundance of natural subjects to draw from. One of my favourite places to go for inspiration in Bexhill is the Highwoods. This is a wonderful wood where I can immerse myself in nature. At this time of year it produces a wonderful display for artists and sketchers to reach for their pencils , brushes and paints. Out comes the golden hues of late autumn and lustrous browns of early winter. Burnt umber, raw sienna and raw umber take centre stage in the palette. There are magnificent beech trees with their bountiful golden shades of coppers , yellows and reddish browns. The silver birch, getting ready to rest for the winter, loses her leaves. Many fern trees and bushes that earlier were lush are slowly withering away at the Highwoods now. Where once stood bold olive greens they have been replaced with dry umbers and brown ochres. Large oak trees reign supreme in the denser part of the woods. Their magnificent glowing bronze is just waiting to be captured on paper. I wonder how many of the large oak trees have been painted over the years? As the glorious trees start to loose their autumn cloak, this makes a carpet of russet, brunette and auburn leaves that are a joy to walk through (and occasionally kick for my dog.) The dappling greens start to disappear, making room for he boldness of the yellow. Each leaf offers a range of colours that any
ART & CRAFTS
paintbrush will be pleased to paint. There is always a wonderful display on show of many subjects to paint in these woods and draw inspiration from. Connecting with nature seems to release my creativity.
Sap green is well used in my paint palette. This could be used for the moss that appears to take over the old fallen branches and creeps up the strong trunks. If still art is what you like drawing then there are many fine examples of pine cones or acorns to choose from. They are scattered all around the woodland floor. This time of year the light presents a challenge. Managing to walk in the wood when its light, and not pouring with rain – you have to be lucky. The mist adds it own touch of magic through the trees. With the days only allowing a few hours of watery brightness in November, around midday is the best time to go for the light. But it is certainly worth it.

back by popular demand – keane By popular demand – Bexhill’s favourites return to the De La Warr Pavilion. Just announced is the live transmission of The Best Of Keane – Live from Berlin on 6 November. What better place to see Keane than in the heart of Strangeland, in the auditorium where they launched this best-selling album in May 2012. For only £12 you can be part of the global audience for this one-off gig. If you have never been to a live broadcast before then you are in for a treat – and the sound will be ramped up enough for you to feel that you really are there.
For only £12 you can be a part of the global audience... In contrast we are delighted to announce two Christmas events that we know Bexhillians will want to book for! The Sugar Dandies – the multi-award-winning ballroom dancing
couple from Britain’s Got Talent – return to the Pavilion after the triumph of their New Year’s Tea Party earlier in the year. You can watch a film of this, with an interview with the Sugar Dandies, on www.dlwp.tv Their Christmas event, bespoke to the Pavilion, is The Christmas Blend, another joyous afternoon of social dancing, party games and cabaret. Special Christmas treats include Rudolph (the quickstep), The Skaters’ Waltz, Cinderella (The Waltz) and a tap-dancing panto horse! Dancers of all ages are welcome, with or without partners, and tea and cake will be served. The Tea Party is on Sunday 8 December at 3pm. Tickets are only £12. The London Gay Mens’ Chorus also makes a welcome return to the Pavilion this Christmas. They have a new show – The Nightmare Before Christmas – which will feature Thriller, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bat Out Of Hell alongside festive favourites. Get ready for a show full of the chorus’s usual vocal fireworks and infectious energy but with a festively fiendish twist! The show is on Sunday 15 December at 5pm. Tickets are only £15 (£13 concs.) YOUR STORIES
Dear Annie, 5th October 2013 I am at last, on my journey, and have arrived at St Petersburg, our first point where paths cross. The streets are still wide and formidable, with fantastic buildings lining them, and grand palaces and churches in abundance. The botanical gardens are a particular interest of yours, so this was where I chose to follow in your steps. Built in 1823, I imagine them to have been most impressive on your arrival. The gardens are pretty and with variety of flora and fauna, and influences from around the world, with a tranquil Japanese garden which looks like a more recent addition. The buildings and greenhouses have been neglected for many years, however, making a rather sorry sight. Although in contrast, there are new constructions and developments in evidence. Unfortunately I could not find anyone I could ask for more information, but had a pleasant tour of the temperate greenhouses (guided entirely in Russian). I imagine you would also have visited some of the many grand palaces and cathedrals. So much has changed since the nineteenth century, but these remain impressive. Latterly, there has been a strong Art Deco theme, one I think you would have appreciated. One particularly beautiful tea room is decorated throughout with gold reliefs of sunflowers across the ceilings, dark wood panelling on the walls, gold ruched fabric at the windows and filled with chandeliers, glass and delicatessen counters offering a feast for all senses. I did not see tiffin on the menu (although it may well have been there) amongst the abundance of delicately placed and finely produced sweets and cakes. I am catching the night train to Moscow tonight and from there am taking the trans Mongolian train to China where our paths next cross. With best wishes, Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum through November serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated
terminal is planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project on facebook (/bexhilltobexhill) and on twitter (@bexhill2bexhill).

CHARITY NEWS
ONE AT CHRISTMAS The past year has been momentous for two young women facing the same disease. Jess Leadbeater (of Hastings) and Sally Freelander (of Bexhill) have been friends for 8 years, but this year one disease has united them further – Type 1 Diabetes.
On the 15th October 2012, at the age of 24, Sally was rushed to Kings College Hospital in London after collapsing in pain. Sally’s symptoms were vomiting, deep rapid breathing, abdominal pain and very high blood sugar levels. This year on the 8th June, showing similar symptoms to Sally, as well as excessive thirst and drowsiness, Jess’s son Kobe, aged 16 months, was taken critically ill to the Conquest Hospital. Both Kobe and Sally were identified as suffering from Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) a potentially fatal complication of undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes. They were placed in intensive care units enduring 1-2 hourly blood tests and cannulas in both hands to deliver fluids. Overnight their lives changed forever. Having Type 1 Diabetes requires intense management, daily injections of insulin and regular blood testing for glucose levels. Type 1 Diabetes is not bought on by diet or lifestyle, and is not preventable. It’s an autoimmune disease which is currently incurable. Remarkably Kobe and Sally are not alone, there are 400,000 people living with
Type 1 Diabetes in the UK, of which 29,000 are children. There are approximately 130 babies, children and young people living with Type 1 Diabetes across the Bexhill, Hastings and Eastbourne areas. In fact Type 1 Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood, with incidences of Type 1 Diabetes being more common in children than cancer and cystic fibrosis, and 5 times more common than bacterial meningitis. Scarily these incidences are rising by 4% each year in the under 5 age group in the UK. The leading charity for Type 1 Diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) provides invaluable support to children, adults and parents impacted by Type 1. JDRF also fund research which aims to cure, treat and prevent Type 1 Diabetes. Their work is vitally important for people like Sally and Kobe, and their families. To raise awareness of Type 1 and funding for JDRF, Jess and Sally are holding a charity Christmas fair on Saturday 23rd November. The fair called ‘One at Christmas’ (aptly named after the disease, and a JDRF campaign) will feature a variety of local businesses and sellers, face painting, food and a raffle. There will also be a Santa’s Grotto and live entertainment for all the family. Entry is free. We would like to thank Crafted (craftedgroup.co.uk) for sponsoring ‘One at Christmas’. Please come along and support this important cause and give Type 1 diabetes the recognition it deserves and get all your Christmas shopping done at the same time.

GARDENING
GARDENING ADVICE FOR NOVEMBER Winter is on its way, leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase so you might be thinking it’s time to bolt the shed door and brush the mud off those wellies. Not so quickly, just take a look below! Lawns Grass will continue to grow in temperatures above 5°C (41°F), so if the weather remains mild it may be necessary to trim the lawn. Ensure the cut is 3-5mm higher than in summer to prevent turf stress. On average, this means a cutting height of around 4cm (1.5in). Keep off the lawn when it is sodden or frozen – you will damage it very quickly. Rake up fallen leaves regularly - left in place they will encourage fungal disease and bare patches. Trees and Shrubs Bare-root deciduous hedging plants, trees and shrubs become available this month. They need to be planted promptly, before they dry out. They can be heeled into the soil for a short period if conditions are not suitable for planting. It is an ideal time to plant roses. Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously growing otherwise new introductions may suffer from replant diseases (rose sickness). Pruning and renovation of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out from now throughout the dormant season. It is easier to see what you are doing when the branches have no leaves. General maintenance tasks Tulip bulbs can be planted out now, remember they like good drainage to stop them rotting so add some grit to your soil if needed. Pot up amaryllis bulbs, water, keep them in a warm place (near a radiator is ideal) and cross your fingers that they will flower in time for Christmas. Finish planting spring bulbs such
as narcissi, crocuses and those elegant alliums – theoretically they should be in the ground by now, but they are fairly forgiving if you have left it late! Birds and wildlife As more different species of birds will be arriving from the north in order to find a warmer climate (yes believe it or not we are warmer than a lot of places) it is a good idea to put out different kinds of food to suit them all. If you have made a bonfire for Guy Fawkes night please check that it does not contain any wildlife such as hedgehogs just before lighting it! “Ask Ian” Gardening Competition! Congratulations to Mrs R Williams who won a pair of Town & Country gardening gloves for your Question: ‘I have 3 fuchsias in my garden which are about 3 feet high and as it is November do I prune, if so, do I prune to the ground. Also is there a need to cover them?’ A.The best time to prune outdoor fuchsias is during early spring after the new shoots appear. It is an advantage to retain the branches intact on the plants during the winter. This not only prevents any disease entering the wounded stems caused by late pruning but the extra cover will also help to give them a little protection during the very cold months. Email Ian a gardening related question and he will choose a winner at random. He will answer the question and send the winner a gardening related prize. The winning question will feature in his following editorial, giving mention to the lucky winner. Send in your questions to: jwardgardens@gmail.com Happy gardening!

Obesity and Exercise “5 minutes” with Debi Arnold Bexhillian: “We’ve seen some amazing testimonials on your website (www.thebeachpad.com) – what do you offer that is different to joining a gym for instance?” Debi Arnold: Most people who want to join a gym, have done so already. For those that haven’t – there hasn’t been much choice up until now. I always wanted personal training or personal weight loss to be affordable and loaded with results. I offer one to one ‘personalised’ sessions from just £10, making it extremely affordable and in the comfort of a nice warm studio. Not forgetting the sea view from The Beach pad – I’m never sure if my clients come for the advice or the view and sea air… Bexhillian: You’ve mentioned one of your clients is 70! Debi Arnold: Yes and she isn’t the oldest either… My favourite comment from our lovely 70 year old was “I used to feel like a walrus in bed – and now I don’t” It still makes me laugh. Bexhillian: Why should our readers come and have a free chat with you? Debi Arnold: I’ve turned people’s lives around, being able to move freely again, skip up the stairs, play with the grandchildren on the floor, drag the wheely bin out, not to mention looking 10 years younger.
HEALTH & FITNESS
can reverse any degeneration giving you back a body that can do all the above with ease. Bexhillian: I’ve heard you specialize in the overweight or those suffering with bad backs? Debi Arnold: I’ve had to become an expert in these areas as so many of my clients were struggling on a daily basis with both or either problem. We had to tackle those problems before building on a nice strong ‘scaffolding’ for greater movement, health and well being. I even teach people how to cook cheap gorgeous healthy food – if they need it. However I train all ages, at all levels from World Champion sports people to busy mums. Bexhillian: What should our readers do next? Debi Arnold: Their first session is free – so they can try it out - with nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain. They can call or email and I’ll be happy to have a chat – even if they have never exercised before – I can help turn their life around and make it a much more healthy and flexible one! We interviewed Debi, HND and ITEC at The Beach Pad St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex www.thebeachpad.com Facebook: The Beach Pad Twitter: @thebeachpad
Bexhillian: How does it work? Debi Arnold: The body is designed to move, lean, bend, rotate, stretch, balance – and over the years our muscles get weaker, and our bones feel fragile. Lovely simple exercise incorporating those movements, with support if needed,

ART & CRAFT
art & craft on the south coast Oh my, is it November already?! It seems only a couple of months ago since we were writing about going out in the summer and making art and craft and joining workshops. Now we are gearing up for Christmas. This month’s article is all about ramping up production.
At Starlings we began warning all our members who make Art and Craft to start making extra stock in preparation for Christmas at the beginning of September. It seems strange with the sun still shining and summer barely ending to send out that request but we know how Santa feel. His little Elves are at it all year round to keep up with demand for Christmas and avoid disappointed people – and we would like to do just the same. Unlike other retailers, most of our stock are handmade by local artists and designers, so we have to think about how long it take to make certain things and did not want to put extra stress on our members at Christmas. We know it will be busy – a ‘gifts and presents’ shop like ours can take up to 30-50% of our annual sales just in the Christmas period alone. So here
are some helpful tips for improving production. • Do a quick time and motion exercise of what you do- i.e. how long something takes. • Then batch the activity up and do the same thing in bulk. So if you are cutting up Christmas tree patterns, don’t do 1 – do 10. It saves you lots of time and materials as you are using the same process over and over. Plus all your tools will be in the right place at the right time etc.. This is what Henry Ford did with his motor car industry a 100 years ago. ( we’re not saying you turn into car factory but you know what we mean) • Gamble to make extra – you can relax in January if you have stock left over. It’s best to nearly sell out rather than run out and not have enough to lose potential sales. • Make sure you have got your supplies in order - materials, etc. last thing you want to worry about is a delay in your production due to the post. • Start now, if you have not done so already to put your stuff in lots of shops and advertising to get your products known to your customers. At Starlings, we have been asking our customers too to shop early or order their presents asap as this will spread the workload on our members over the next month or so. We have congratulated many people with their Christmas list in October!! Thank you for thinking of us. To help our customers spread the experience over the next month and a half, we will also be having late night shopping where we are open till 8pm on Thursday evenings starting from 13th of November. Happy making and selling.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE TIPS
joining in social groups In today’s social media world where is the best place to hang out? Truthfully, it all depends on your exact requirements, some really useful places to explore, are Facebook groups, like Google + communities or LinkedIn groups. What is the purpose of these groups then? Answer, to connect to hyper targeted niche groups of like minded individuals and/or businesses for the purposes of sharing information and connecting with businesses. There are groups or communities on just about any subject you can imagine, and if there isn’t one that you may be interested in then you can create your own and start inviting people into the group. You can make the group private so that only members can see the contents, or control the membership. The choices are many and you will ultimately gain the most enjoyment from a group pertinent to your interests, as the subject matter is always on point. www. facebook.com/groups/BexhillianMag/ why not join The Bexhillian facebook group and connect with businesses and individuals in our locality. One of the little known elements to a group is that you can email all members of a group, as well as being able to communicate directly with individuals. Within a group you can create events, photos and files all for the purposes of sharing within the group and gaining maximum exposure. The downside of groups, especially within LinkedIn is that people forget the social
media rules and spam like crazy. If you run or moderate a group, be sure to set the ground rules and ban people that consistently do this with no value to the community or attempts to engage. It is difficult to create the right environment but trust me, when you get it right, it is nice to visit and gain contacts, and information. If you choose to use G+ for your communities you have the dual benefits of running hangouts to communicate (video chats with groups) and making the content indexable (searchable) within Google; which will help your website ranking. Why not take the plunge and do two things right now, search for a group on your favourite hobby and do a second search for your line of work and join both, start taking part in conversations and see how you enjoy it. I would love to hear from you on how you get on and if you find something exceptionally unusual or bizarre (provided it is suitable) I will pick one and promote it in the next edition, you can contact me via email: paul@mediabeetlesuk.com
Paul Ricketts. For more information on groups and social media tips visit: www.mediabeetlesuk.com Facebook/mediabeetles Twitter: @Mediabeetles #bexhillianmag

Rich Tomato and Chorizo Soup (serves 4)
• • • • • • • •
Inner Warmth Proper welly weather hits us as we enter November and if you are either having a fireworks party at home or heading out into the garden to gather up leaves to make something arty indoors later, this soup will give you inner warmth. Either make ahead to reheat on your return or take piping hot in a flask with chunky bread to dip. Some of us are more dunkers than soup eaters but that’s ok, isn’t it? Autumn is a time to be together all wrapped up in hats and scarves enjoying the changing colours all around us before we venture into bank balance busting Christmas season. Autumn is full of low cost fun and who can’t remember being a child wild and free at the sight of a fallen conker?
3 fat cooking chorizo sausages, chopped small 1 small onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 x 400g tins of chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon of dried sage 500ml chicken or vegetable stock 1 small handful of chopped Spring Green, Brussel Tops or Curly Kale 1 x 400g can haricot beans or butter beans (whatever you like)
Heat a pan, add the chorizo sausages, and fry turning frequently. Add the onion, no need to add any more oil as the sausages will release enough. Add the garlic and continue to cook until softened. Add the tomatoes, dried sage and stock and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Add the greens and beans and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes. That’s it. Serve with lots of chunky bread.

BEXHILL NEWS LOCAL CHARITIES
News from the mayor of bexhill
technical skills she brought to the fore with her pupils from the media studies class. What a great group of people. Thank you to all the artists who donated their time unselfishly to our cause. They gave their all and the result was extra special. The lovely local talent that performed with out them where would be in a show like that. The De La Warr for their care and attention, to the staff they provided during the day and evening wonderful! And of course I suppose no one has ever said to the people of Bexhill,
Well it’s all over now and what a success it was. Everyone is still raving about it and we had a lot of support from the people of Bexhill. Yes I’m talking about the Variety show. The people I have to thank are Prima Artists. What a piece of work they took on. They worked so hard and so professionally how can you just say ‘thank you’. The whole thing took months to plan and get the artists in place. When you go to the theatre you sit down and enjoy what is produced for you to see, but you don’t know the preparation, the blood, sweat and tears, the frustrations, the agonies of what people have to do to get that entertainment to you. Thank you Tony, Joan, Sam, and Joanna. Joan for her great energy and enthusiasm that did wane once or twice but a true and determined woman pulled it off. Tony for his constant support and advice also Sam. To Joanna for all the stage management and
THANK YOU for coming to the show and for all the support you have given Bexhill Caring Community since 1965, without that support we would not be here today carrying on the vital work that Myrtle Bagnell started those many years ago. I was asked constantly as people streamed out if I was going to make it a regular feature. The simple answer is NO. It was a one off occurrence, a unique happening.
If you want to see the show, the DVD is available for £10 All proceeds are going to Bexhill Caring Community.
