Happy Easter Fun! With the children on Easter holidays, juggling work and activities can be stressful! But we have lots to do in this area and places to visit that don’t have to break the bank. There’s the Bexhill 100 Easter Bonnet Parade along the promenade and lots to play on at Egerton Park, walks along the seafront, stopping for the obligatory ice cream of course. You could also call in to try one of our monthly authors, Janet van den Bussche, delicious food ‘beside the sea’. Also on our website we post more April events that are happening in and around Bexhill, so don’t forget to check those out. There are also regular clubs covering a variety of activities from wellbeing to martial arts to cycling and more. We had some very good response from some of our adverttisers, kindly letting us know that their enquiries have increased since appearing in our Bexhillian, so that makes all the hard work worth it. Thank you to all contributors for your monthly dedication. We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. Don’t worry though, we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back and on our website, or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you.

gardening advice for APRIL Welcome to the April edition of our monthly gardening advice column. With the temperatures still clinging to the low side through March the garden has failed to really breakthrough with grass cutting barely starting and many bulbs only taking a tentative peek. With an early Easter and the hope of some sunny longer days, April is looking to be a very exciting busy month.
Carry on Spring Cleaning
Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. Remove tired winter bedding and plants that did not survive the winter.
Planting
Deadhead daffodils and narcissi, give them a liquid feed or sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Split clumps of snowdrops by digging them up, gently pulling them apart into bunches of 3 or more bulbs and replanting in dug over soil with some bonemeal incorporated into it. Make sure you work quickly so the bulbs don’t have a chance to dry out, and water in if the soil is at all dry. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month.
Pest Watch
Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails, they love Tulips!
Birds
Birds will be building their nests now in preparation for laying their eggs. Do keep putting out bird food - they quickly become accustomed to regular food supplies and it’s a real treat to see wild birds in the garden. (They can help you with your slug problem too!)
YOUR gardening STORIES
Trees, shrubs and climbers
Feed acid loving plants such as camellias and rhododendrons with ericaceous feed if you are on neutral or alkaline soil. A dose of sequestered iron also helps prevent the leaves turning yellow. (Tip - mulch regularly with fresh or composted pine needles. This can acidify the ground slightly.) Plant and move evergreen shrubs, conifers and trees and remember to water them well until firmly rooted in. Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide. Prune hydrangeas – do not remove stems with a bud at the top, but snip off old stems.
Lawns
Mow regularly (start with the blades high for the first couple of cuts), over seed bare patches and apply weed and moss killer. Rake out or scarify AFTER applying moss killer or you will merely be spreading moss to the rest of your lawn! Now is the ideal time to sow and lay new lawns on well prepared ground.
(Roy & Linda of Bexhill, recently turfed garden)
Happy Easter. Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you ever need a hand get in touch! Happy gardening!

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS
2015 BUDGET SUMMARY Mr Osborne said that this Budget came against the backdrop of rising employment, improving growth forecasts and falling debt. Headline announcements included an increase in the personal tax-free allowance, the introduction of a Help to Buy ISA and pensioners being given the freedom to sell their annuities for a cash lump sum. Although to eliminate the remainder of the deficit, he conceded that significant cuts would still be needed, including a £13billion reduction in the budget of government departments and £12billion from welfare spending. Following recent controversy over tax avoidance and evasion, there was a commitment to close loopholes, while the rate of the bank levy was also increased (which will benefit the Treasury by £900million a year).
Fuel Duty
– A fuel duty increase scheduled for September has been cancelled saving families £10 each time they have to fill up their car.
Personal Tax
– The personal tax-free allowance will increase to £10,800 next year and then rise again to £11,000 in 2017. The higher rate tax threshold will increase from £42,385 to £43,300 by 2017-18. 1p will be cut from duty on a pint of beer and 2% from cider and scotch whisky.
Business, enterprise and employment – Corpora-
tion tax to be slashed to 20% in April 2015 – the lowest of any major economy in the world. The Chancellor admitted that the system for High street businesses needed far-reaching reform. Aside from a commitment to abolish Class 2 National Insurance contributions for the self-employed during the next parliament, there was a further promise to abolish the annual tax return altogether. The Chancellor also gave assurances that there would be support for all regions of the UK. He spoke of the need to build a ‘Northern Powerhouse’, the creation of 10 new Enterprise Zones and help for industries including the motor trade, film and local newspapers. And changes were announced the Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts, ensuring they comply with the latest state aid rules.
Pensions and savings – Five million pensioners will be
given access to their annuities, while plans to introduce a radically more flexible ISA were also announced. The Help to Buy ISA will mean that for every £200 a first-time buyer saves towards their deposit, the Government will top it up with £50 more.
A new Personal Savings Allowance will take 95% of taxpayers out of savings tax altogether. The measures, which will take effect in April next year, create a tax-free allowance of £1,000 or £500 for higher rate payers. There was also news that the lifetime pensions allowance.
Health
– The Budget promised funding for the major expansion of mental health services for children and more help to those suffering from maternal mental illness. Charities – A scheme that allows charities to automatically claim gift-aid on their donations is set to be extended – from the first £5,000 they raise, to the first £8,000. Mr Osborne said that it would benefit over 6,500 smaller charities. Elsewhere £75 million in LIBOR fines was put aside for various good cause including regimental charities, air ambulance services and the Church Roof Fund.
Tax evasion, avoidance and aggressive tax planning – Mr Osborne vowed that individuals and
businesses who flouted the laws would be made to pay their ‘fair share’. A new Diverted Profits Tax would tackle multinationals who attempted to artificially shift their profits offshore. There will also be efforts make to close loopholes in Entrepreneurs Relief, changes to corporation tax rules to prevent contrived loss arrangements and confirmation that more Accelerated Payment Notices would be issued in the year ahead.
Summary – There weren’t many surprises in this Budget
but George Osborne will be banking on his message of financial responsibility and increasing economic optimism striking a chord with the public. Summing up, he said “Today I present the Budget of an economy stronger in every way from the one we inherited. The Budget of an economy taking another big step from austerity to prosperity.”

Tomato and Basil Spaghetti Sauce •
One large onion chopped and browned in a little butter and olive oil
Easter usually heralds the first guests of the season descending on our homes - especially as we live at the Seaside. Just walking around the shops close to Easter (or any bank holiday) it’s clear to see the stress as people pile food into their trolleys seemingly without any idea what on earth they will be cooking. I always write simple menus – Friday breakfast Bacon sandwiches, Lunch Snack on the prom, Dinner BBQ etc etc. From those menus I then create a list, otherwise like everyone else, I run the risk of spending a small fortune and then struggling to feed everyone with the fridge and freezers bulging. Events like Easter can be very expensive and stressful so it’s worth including at least a couple of meals which you can prepare in advance, freeze and cook when needed – who wants to spend the whole of Easter not joining in? A simple fish pie made with smoked and/ or non smoked fish simmered in a simple sauce made from cooked onions, double cream and butter with parsley and topped with creamy mash seems to please all generations and can easily be frozen. So too can stews and spaghetti sauces – if these are frozen in portion sizes they can
•
Chopped Garlic Clove (optional)
•
Beef Stock (or vegetable)
•
Handful of Basil leaves
•
Tin of chopped Tomatoes
•
Tablespoon spoonful of Tomato Puree
Once the onions are lightly browned add the chopped Garlic and tin of tomatoes, bring to the boil, add stock and Tomato Puree good grind of black pepper and pinch of salt and Sugar. Simmer for at least 10 minutes until sauce is thick. Stir in the torn basil and serve or freeze for another day in portion size (in sandwich bags) or in a larger container. Feeling adventurous... Why not add some (or any) of the following: Mushrooms, Artichokes, Bacon, minced Beef, Sliced Chicken, Cubed Butternut Squash, olives.
Enjoy! If all else fails come and enjoy the Music at Tea Beside the Sea this Easter.

spring fever: call of the wild •
•
•
It’s that time of year again when everything springs into life. The birds are chirping their mating calls, the lambs are going out in the fields to dance and play. Nature at its finest is unfolding all across the Sussex countryside, and walking with your dog is a great way to experience it! But while we’re happy to just watch the bustle of nature, your dog – as a predator – might find the spring frolics too tempting to resist! Clashes between our dogs and wildlife – or livestock – can be dangerous and may result in tragedy! Follow these safety tips to help prevent your dog from getting led astray by the ‘call of the wild’. • Keep your dog on-lead around livestock – dogs can be shot by the farmer if they harass livestock. Sheep can miscarry if stressed, so even on a lead, stay well away. (Always re-close gates when crossing farmland). • Use a long lead to provide more space for your dog in areas ‘unsafe’ for offlead fun. • Attach a set of Falconry bells to your dogs collar (available online). This will help you keep track of him in the undergrowth, gives wildlife more of a ‘head
start’ to hide and also masks their noise as they sneak away! Use a thrown ball as well as treats as a reward and distraction (on lead) –give him something fun for coming away from interesting things! There are other dangerous animals awakening in the spring, like adders and bees. Keep an eye out, and discourage your dog from poking at things he finds! Always take an emergency first aid kit and your vet’s number.

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE
Analyzing the property protection trust The first thing to appreciate that there are many advantages to a PPT; not least for the classic reasons such as second marriage syndrome, protecting inheritances for children from previous relationships and also care fees mitigation. The technique of course only works for clients where either the property is solely owned, or more commonly where it is owned as tenants in common (or pro indivisio in Scotland). It’s important to appreciate that, as far as England/ Wales is concerned, there are two distinct aspects to property ownership – the legal title and also the beneficial interest. The first refers to who actually owns the legal title to the property – the freehold. When one of the co-owners dies, regardless of whether the property is owned as joint tenants or tenants in common, the survivor takes the legal title. This is because a legal title is owned jointly and a co-owner of the legal title cannot ‘will’ this to a.n.other. With regards to the beneficial interest, this refers to the value that the property is ascribed to hold. It is this, which increases and decreases according to the property market. As we know, it is possible to gift some of this value to another, usually through a declaration of trust. This is typically where a sole owner has a partner living with them and chooses to own the VALUE of the house equally from that point on. So, holding the legal title alone does not imply that the holder also owns all the value of the house – legal title and beneficial interest can be independent of each other. Where a property is owned as joint tenants, then when that property was conveyed to the co-owners there was an agreement that a surviving co-owner not only takes the legal title but also the full value of the house via survivorship. If we were to then sever the tenancy on the property we have then split out the beneficial interests so each of the co-owners can leave their beneficial interest now to whomever they choose.
So, when the first of the co-owners dies, and there is a property protection trust in the Will of the deceased, it’s important to understand that the legal title passes via survivorship to the surviving co-owner. It is the BENEFICIAL INTEREST, which the Will transfers into the trust created by the Will of the deceased. One of the downsides of the trust then flows from this transfer into trust. Where a property is owned as joint tenancy then the probate value of the deceased’s estate does not take into account the share of the house owned by the deceased – this is because as we have discovered above, the legal AND the beneficial interest of the property pass to the survivor by survivorship. When we administer this person’s estate the process we follow is to notify the Land Registry of the death of the joint owner. However, where the house is owned as tenants in common and the beneficial share owned by the deceased is destined for the property protection trust, the estate administrator has to transfer this share into the hands of the trustees, and register that interest with the Land Registry. In other words, the share of the house has a ‘probate value’ and so the cost of administering the estate where there is a discreet share of a house is usually slightly higher to reflect this additional workload.

My hair was also cut by Massimo, the cut was very well executed and I am really pleased with the result. Massimo first questioned me about how I would like my hair to be cut: the length on the back and sides, the length on the top, and the overall style. My hair was styled and finished using Layrite supper hold , which is sold in the salon. The overall experience of The Barber Shop was very friendly and professional and a very high quality of service, at £25 this is real value for money. I will certainly be returning.

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
knock, knock, who’s there? We need to help our children recognise and name their emotions, otherwise there is a tendency for all emotions to go through the “anger door.” Kids often appear angry, when actually there is another more painful emotion underneath – we need to play “Knock, knock, who’s there?”
It’s FEAR!
All kids have fears (as do all adults for that matter!) Depending on the age of the child, those fears are pretty predictable... fear of the dark, fear of monsters under the bed, fear of animals etc. It’s important for us to help our children deal with fear, because when unchecked, fear is probably the most destructive of all emotions. Most kids who display “acting-out behaviours” are actually very scared – it’s never “cool” to admit to being scared, so some kids would rather be seen as disinterested, offhand or even downright hostile to cover up their fears. We must avoid the extremes of “Don’t be silly – you’re too old to be afraid of that” and “Poor Baby, let me handle this for you.” We can neither disprove their fear or make
it go away with words. We need to walk through their fear with them, help them face it, acknowledging their fear and comforting them; help them deal with it themselves, whilst reassuring them of our presence. 1. Acknowledge and comfort their fears. “I know it’s really horrid to be afraid – it doesn’t feel good does it. I’m sad for you that this is so scary” 2. Offer truthful reassurance. “Let’s look at and explore this situation together” 3. Give reassurance of your presence. “I’m going to go through this with you – you can count on me to be here for you” For example: 1. Emily, I’m wondering if you don’t want to go to Kevin’s House because you’re afraid of his big dog? There’s nothing wrong with being afraid. Sometimes I get scared too. I feel sad when I think about you feeling so afraid. 2. Em, I will ask Kevin’s mum to make sure that the dog is out in the back garden while we’re at their house. I know he’s bigger than you, but actually he’s a very friendly dog – he won’t hurt you – he hasn’t hurt Kevin, who is just the same size as you. 3. I will be with you the whole time at Kevin’s house – we’ll be together having fun... and remember I love you!
Think... What fears might your child be experiencing? How might you as parents, or even grandparents, help our children deal with their fears, whether of storms, the dark, rejection, failure, wolves, dogs or monsters?

ARTSCHARITIES & CRAFTS LOCAL
There are few sights in nature that are as spectacular as the spring tides. In April they appear to be magnificent with tides that reveal huge expanses of sand. All along the coast the tides reach out to reveal rock pools and areas to explore for everyone. My dogs absolutely love being free on the beaches – running in and out of the waves and the shallow sand dunes.
paint in a more textured manner. Using lots of paint and water is the way to go to obtain the effect I am after. I like to cover the canvas first with a pale violet then adding whites and blues and greens. Hues of ultramarine or pale olive are mixed with lighter whites and lots of water usually mixed on an old plate as a makeshift palette. Maybe a touch of dark prussian blue will be used. Using my palette knife to add the texture of waves is one of my favourite parts again using lots of water to ensure the translucency that I require. Pictured is an extract from one of my favourite acrylic paintings based on a sunrise across Bexhill beach at springtime looking towards Eastbourne.
At this time of year we are feeling the effect of warmer days and with this brings the misty mornings -where the weather conditions can constantly change and influence the environment. A breathe of fog can transform the coastline and with this brings hope that it will be a day that promises sun. Walking along the tide line when the tide is full out at this time of year can make you feel like the land is far away. Being enveloped in mist and strolling in fresh sand with the seagulls noise and the waves gently breaking on sand makes for an enjoyable experience. You can walk for miles all along the Bexhill beach when nature treats us to spring tides.
Whatever time of day the spring tides can provide a treat for the eyes and a wonderful muse for artists.
The medium watercolour is my favourite and lends itself well to painting seascapes, however when I paint my seascapes I love to use acrylic on canvas. I don’t use brushes but use palette knives as I can lay on the
The sky looms large above as the tide appears to go out forever into the horizon. At times to paint such a wonderful vision of a moving and ever changing subject can be daunting. However perseverance and the knowledge that a moment in time will be captured spurs one on. The weather conditions can constantly change and influence the sea. Whatever time of day the spring tides can provide a treat for the eyes and a wonderful muse for artists. Next month - beautiful bluebells at Highwoods.

Letting go of stress With the promise of Spring and better days ahead, it’s time to think about letting go of stress. Most of the stress we experience is selfinflicted. We can’t do much to change the weather, we will still have the same twentyfour hours in a day and bills will still need to be paid. However, by making a few small changes to our outlook, combined with some practical tweaks along the way, stress can be reduced significantly. 1. Get up an hour earlier. No, this isn’t sadistic suggestion number one! A bit of quiet time for reflection, meditation, a leisurely shower or bath can really help you to start the day on “slow, gentle and peaceful,” rather than, “hurried, rushed and late.” 2. Prioritise. Write a list at the start of each day, highlighting the key things you need to attend to. Accept that there will always be more things to do than you have time for, so tear your list in half and move the rest to the top of tomorrow’s list. 3. Learn to say “NO.” Be realistic and do not take on everything, don’t be afraid to ask for help. 4. Accept. There is no such thing as perfection and understand that the need for perfection is a losing battle that will only leave you feeling frustrated, stressed and dissatisfied. 5. Get active. Taking some regular exercise is a powerful way to reduce
HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES
stress and it’s a great tonic for both mind and body. 6. Stop trying to be right. It really is OK to give in occasionally. Competing and battling all the time can be a major source of stress. Criticising and putting others down really will not make you feel better. 7. Slow down! Take time to relax. There are many tried and tested ways to reduce stress so try a few and see what works best for you. 8. Finally, at the end of the day, spend a few minutes “putting the day to rest.” Think back and make a note of all the little successes of the day. Don’t dwell on what went wrong but celebrate what went right.
Until next time.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES
social media platforms & uses Social media for business owners
If you aren’t currently using or considering using social media for your business, I would suggest that you stop burying your head in the sand, as it is reported that three out of four people online are using it. There are over 2 Billion active social media accounts in the UK with an average daily use calculated at 2 hours 13 mins. • At 52% the UK has the highest proportion of social network users • Users are made up of 49% males v 51% of females • 36% of the UK consumers are using social media to interact with brands. What are you waiting for… your audience awaits! In no particular order let’s talk platforms. • Facebook ~ Launched in 2004 Facebook seems to be the choice of platform for those dipping their toe into the world of Social Media. Currently they have over 1 Billion users with over half of those being female. Popular with the 18-29 age range. • Twitter ~ Launched 2006 550 million registered users are on Twitter at the moment, with more males that females using this platform. Popular with the 18-29 age range. • Google+ ~ Launched 2011 The new kid on the block, and one I have yet to warm to. Google+ boosts over 1 Billion users. There doesn’t appear to be data on the ages using this platform, but it is reported that more male users than females use it. • Pinterest ~ Launched 2010 The majority of users of this platform are female, a whopping 72%. This platform has the biggest gender divide compared to the others. iPad users particularly enjoy this platform. I personally have learnt loads of cooking and cleaning tips via it! Popular with the 18-29 age range, just slipping away from the 30-49 bracket.
• Instagram (8%) ~ Launched 2010 90% of this platforms users are under the age of 35. Don’t be put off the fact that the youngsters love this platform; remember the spending power of mum and dad! More female users than male. • LinkedIn ~ Launched 2003 Men are more likely to be using this platform than women, Popular with the 30-49 age range. closely followed by the 50-64 age group.
Social media for employees
If you’re not on LinkedIn, you’re missing a huge trick. Recruiters now patrol its corridors looking for people like you. Regardless if they have seen your CV, they’ll still go and check you out on LinkedIn to see a little more of your personality and get a more complete view of an individual. LinkedIn is a place where you can sell yourself and add colour to your skills and experience. LinkedIn now has more than 15 million members in the UK. It’s no longer the reserve of management, but is now a place where almost anybody can market themselves, especially if they have niche skills. Your LinkedIn profile works for you as if it’s your own website. Carefully chosen key words and phrases will help recruiters and employers find you, before you find them! “The world of job hunting has changed in the last few years. It’s now less about going out and finding your next job, and more about leaving yourself open to be found. Getting a LinkedIn profile raises your visibility and leaves you open to offers, approaches, and more options for your career development.” Mandy Brook, Recruitment SouthEast Director Statistic Sources: http://www.201digital.co.uk/ & http://nealedlin.co.uk/social-media-platforms/ Accuracy dependent on source and age of this article.

Coping with... ACHES AND PAINS How often do you wake up with an ache or pain and think ‘Maybe it will be gone by tomorrow’?
everyday aches and pains and if left untreated could cause further longer lasting injuries.
Your body is subjected to different types of strain everyday and can develop strains from the way you sit, working at a computer, repetitive strain, over-working, under resting or from injury or illness. Your body absorbs all these strains and works silently to correct them but sometimes things become overloaded or go wrong, resulting in pain and discomfort. Strain and tension causes our muscles to become unbalanced causing our occasional ‘maybe it will be gone tomorrow’ aches and pains but if this is left uncorrected then it can lead to ligament and joint damage. Constant muscle imbalance causes our bodies to adjust the load from the sore tired muscles to the ligaments.
This puts a strain on the ligaments that secure your joints and bones. However unlike our muscles, ligaments do not stretch and instead they tear, which leads to instability in the joint and pain. Your body attempts to correct this by increasing muscle tension in supporting areas around the joint. Chronic or long standing muscle tension causes your
Osteopathy is an effective form of diagnosis and treatment which addresses pain and dysfunction in the body. It is based on the principle that the health and wellbeing of an individual depends on their musculoskeletal structure and balance. There is no single treatment that is applied to each patient or injury, instead patients receive a personalised treatment plan using techniques that are well-known to all therapies as well as methods specific to osteopaths. The difference is where we use those techniques. Not just at the site of pain, but also in the areas that support the site of pain. Those areas are not always obvious but osteopaths work to find and treat those support areas to give lasting pain relief and help prevent recurrence.

BEXHILL NEWS UPDATE
bexhill town forum NEWS The Town Forum has focussed over the last few months on Bexhill’s possible future types of governance, holding three meetings where we looked into whether we may eventually be led by people with greater local interest. The last of these meetings, on March 13th, was very well attended and the panel of six experts fielded many probing questions providing plenty of new information. To follow this look into Bexhill’s possible future, at the next meeting of the Forum we will look at other projects and activities that are under way, and also shaping our future. There are numerous group and organisations working hard for our town, providing for its future and entertaining us, but it seems that many people are unaware of much of what is being done. So, on May 22nd, we will bring together as many of these organisations as we can to talk about their work and share their ideas and intentions with the public. There will be stalls to browse and plenty of opportunity to talk and ask questions at the stalls. In addition there will be two speakers: one talk will be about the Javelin project and the prospects of having a high speed rail service into Bexhill from London; the other will be from the Chamber of Commerce,

This will be a different forum from usual with more informal time when attendees can move around, discuss and find out what is going on. But it will also include the formal talks and opportunities to question the speakers. Doors will open at St Peter’s Community Centre, on Friday May 22nd, at 6:30 pm. Refreshments will be available.
Next forum dates:
• Friday May 22nd: 6:30pm refreshments and informal chat for 7pm formal start. • Friday October 2nd: 6:30pm refreshments and informal chat for 7pm formal start. Please note that the May and October meetings will start half an hour later than usual. All meetings will be at: St Peter’s Community Centre, Bexhill Old Town. TN40 2HE.
