August? Already? The long Summer holidays and sunny days out begin, sometimes the inspiration for things to do doesn’t come easy. Well we can help you out there, we have a mixture of events listed at the back of this magazine, in our “What’s on...” pages. Also to kick off this month, there’s the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club’s 10th Annual Classic Car Show, being held at the Polegrove, on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August; see full details inside. That’ll certainly be one to mark in the diary. We have more helpful parenting advice from Susie Marriott, in this month’s article she talks about “Supporting your children”. As a Mum I totally agree with all points raised. Children grow up so fast these days don’t they? So we’re grateful and hopeful that her articles will help some who may be struggling. Enjoying time at the beach? How about a beach barbecue? Try cooking fish in paper, yes really, full recipe and method inside... We aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community by being informative and relevant to all of our readers. As Bexhill is 20,000+ homes, it does mean that some areas will receive issues bi-monthly. But don’t worry we have ‘Pick up Points’ listed in the back, and on our website or email us your address and we’ll deliver a copy to you. Thank you all for your continued support,

LOCAL EVENTS

The Bexhill 100 Motoring Club are hosting their

10th anniversary Classic Car Show

At the Polegrove, off West Parade, Bexhill-on-Sea, on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August 2014. This event attracted around 500 display vehicles and 4000 visitors last year. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual car show and with the wonderful vehicles on display together with a programme of interesting events, taking place throughout the day, including International violinist, Caroviolina (pictured right), it promises to be a day to remember. Over the past nine years the show has raised £36,000 for local charities and organisations. Formed in 1999, the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club was established to cater for the needs of all motor enthusiasts, whether they drive a classic car, commercial, motorcycle or even a modern day vehicle. Membership currently stands at around 240 members. The Club attends many local shows, fetes and events during the course of the season so that members can show off their pride and joy and support others to raise funds for their organisations. The Club also holds informal social meetings at 7.30pm on every fourth Friday of the month – further details of the meetings plus pictures and information on events can be found on our website www.bexhill100mc.co.uk Bexhill 100 have raised £36,000 for locally based charitable causes in the last nine years, and hope that this year will be equally successful.

if you hate it... change it! What’s all this FASTING about? Every year new vocabulary seems to hit us – this year it’s the ‘5:2’. For those of you unfamiliar with the expression ‘5:2’ – it refers to a diet in which you eat what you like for five days and for two days, you eat only 500 calories. There are derivatives of this concept, but that is generally the idea. So we asked our Health and Fitness writer, Debi Arnold from The Beach Pad, for her views on this latest fad.

“First it works primarily and simply because of the deficit of calories you eat on the two days of what they call ‘fasting’. Secondly – this isn’t fasting. It is just eating less on two days. And whilst I am absolutely fine with what I call ‘skipping a meal or two’, a few times of the week (lets face it the sky won’t fall in if you miss lunch), I am not too happy with their suggestion you can eat what you like on the other five days. You shouldn’t eat what you like on the

HEALTH & FITNESS

other five days, and this is where the programme is flawed. It fails to meet or encourage eating nutritiously for your world, your job, your lovelife, your energy levels, or your health. Eating what you like is what has often caused too much stored belly fat in the first place, unless it is real food that is. The only programme that I know works is shopping, cooking and eating real food. Not processed food, which is twice the calorie density of real food, with half the nutrients, OR LESS. It’s the programme we use which comes from Athletes to those struggling with obesity to those post baby weight Mums with four children and a hungry husband.” Fasting is a serious business, and shouldn’t be dabbled with unless you know what you are doing and have been given the all clear by your doctor. That said, if you skip a meal, because you are still full, not hungry or ate too much to the previous day – then the sky won’t fall in and you’ll be ready for your next meal (just make sure it’s home made good stuff – EVERY time). There is free advice offered to all Bexhillian readers.

Cooking outside as the sun is setting is a great Summer treat. As the evenings are still light and the remaining heat of the day lingers, catch the last of the sun with those you love over a glass of something cold. This unusual way of cooking fish causes a stir but you can rest assured in knowing that no bits of fish will get lost in the coals or gets stuck on the grill ruining the overall look of the dish.

Fish Cooked in Newspaper (serves 2) •

• • •

1 medium sized Sea Bass, gutted by your local fishmonger 1 lemon, sliced Fresh herbs, parsley, dill Newspaper, baking paper and string

Light the barbecue and while you wait for the coals to turn white and the heat to die down, prep the fish. Place a sheet of baking paper over 4 double sheets of newspaper and place fish on top. Put lemon slices under the fish, inside the cavity along with the fresh herbs and then finally more lemon sliced on top. Wrap the newspaper around the fish to form a parcel. Fix with string. Place the wrapped fish parcel in a large bucket of seawater or fresh water for no longer than 5 minutes. Remove and place on

waiting barbecue. Cook for 15 minutes each side. The paper will turn black but the fish will keep moist. Open up parcel and fillet fish. Serve with salad leaves and the vegetables barbecued alongside the fish. Fish used in photo was Sea Bream bought from Seafood P&G, Western Road, Bexhill.

YOUR STORIES

BEXHILL to bexhill... Quebec through to Montreal. Dear Annie Quebec has an entirely different feel to the rest of Canada, many comment that it is more like Europe than North America. Certainly everyone speaks French and the city of Quebec has narrow winding streets with many more old buildings than perhaps the whole of the rest of Canada put together. It is a very pretty city, the old town of Quebec, yet you step outside and enter back into the world I have got used to being Canada, with wide streets and modern buildings, Tim Horton’s and Starbucks.

It is a slower pace here too, places practically pull out a chair and invite you to stop in the street to drink coffee. Streets seem built for you to wander and take in the atmosphere, small artisan shops, jewellers and dress makers, and a wonderful farmers market filled with the most glorious colours and smells and tastes. A place you really can visit at leisure and feel quite indulgent enjoying. Not far from the city sits the Montmorency Falls, still as magnificent as you described them and much more low key than Niagara in terms of visitors. With wonderful views out to the St Lawrence River, the weather was beautiful, and the city could be seen across the water. It really was a treacherous path to navigate for the Eothen, so many ship wrecks lie at the bottom of the ocean in this part of the world, I have a renewed respect for Lord Brassey and his seamanship. Montreal is quite a contrast in many ways, although with even more opportunities for feasting - eyes, ears and mouths. It is considerably larger and with a faster pace of life. There is forever a festival of some kind going on, I watched cicus performers doing the most incredible acrobatics from ribbons and numerous musicians as the Jazz Festival got underway. Also, I couldn’t visit Montreal without paying a visit to the Victoria Bridge. It stills stands magnificantly across the St Lawrence and is an engineering wonder. The plaque to the Grand Trunk Railway can still be seen at the entrance, although with several lanes of traffic as well as the railway lines it proved a challenge to get to. With so many train journeys through Montreal though I must have travelled across it on a number of ocassions once I had tracked it down on foot. Alas I did not manage to trace the plaque with Thomas Brassey’s name which was really disappointing. I will continue my pursuit to track it down, however, and will let you know of my progress. With kind regards, Louise. Louise Kenward is embarking on a rail journey from Bexhill, UK to Bexhill, Australia and on to Bexhill, Canada. Following in Annie (Lady) Brassey’s footsteps as far as possible, she will cross her path on a number of occasions along the way. An exhibition at Bexhill Museum serves as an introduction to the project, with information about each Bexhill, Annie Brassey and how it all connects. Supported also by the De La Warr Pavilion, a dedicated terminal is

planned for the foyer to follow the project blog www.bexhilltobexhill.com throughout Louise’s journey. You can also follow the project in social media.

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

how to protect your family home Most people who co-own their home with another person do so as Joint Owners. They both own the whole property. On the death of a Joint Owner, the home AUTOMATICALLY becomes the sole property of the survivor – who can then do what they want with it. However this can cause problems: 1. If the survivor then remarries, it is possible that the whole of the house will then pass to their new spouse on their death, thus disinheriting the children of the first marriage. 2. If the survivor has to go into a Nursing or Residential Home, as the sole owner of the property, the Local Authority has powers to charge the cost of care against the value of the whole house, again disinheriting the children. The answer to all of these problems, is to change the way the home is owned from Joint Owners to Tenants in Common – a straightforward process that doesn’t involve the mortgage company even if the property is mortgaged. As Tenants in Common each owner owns one half of the property and, using a Will, can do whatever they wish with their share of the property on their death, including: 1. Leaving it to their (own) children so that is the surviving spouse remarries they will only own their own half of the property and can only give their own share to their new spouse. 2. Leaving it to their (own) children so that if a surviving spouse needs care, the Local

Authority can only charge the cost of care against the half of the house that they own – ensuring in either case that their children inherit at least half of the value of their home. In fact recent case law indicates that the value of half a house (providing the owners of the other half don’t want to sell their share) is effectively Nil and in these circumstances the Local Authority may not be able to charge any of the cost of care against the value of the house. We do, however, recommend that in the above situations provisions are also made in the Will, through a Will trust, to delay the gift and prevent the surviving spouse being forced out of the home and also to ensure that the surviving spouse can have access to the capital and/or income if the house is sold. This type of trust is called a Life Interest Trust and is sometimes marketed as a Property Protection Trust. Please note that these arrangements only apply to couples who are drafting Wills. They are not effective for single people. It is therefore essential to plan early.

BEXHILLL HISTORY LOCAL CHARITIES

canadian soldiers sport in bexhill Canadians sport in Bexhill during the First World War: What it says about Bexhillians This month marks the start of the First World War centenary. Over the next four years, key aspects of the war will be retold and reanalysed. It is important, however, that we make the centenary relevant to current realities. So often history is consumed without asking one pertinent question: Why should I care about this? History cannot exist in a vacuum; it must demonstrate a broader relevance to its target audience. With this in mind; what better topic to discuss than sport?

Baseball Team, O.T.C. Bexhill Capt. T.W. Macdowell, V.C., seated third from left and Cadet G.H. Mullin, V.C., seated 6th from Left.

Sport has been an enduring fixture of the Summer and has dominated TV schedules. However, sport does not just exist as a form of entertainment. It can be a powerful tool of unity. In a military capacity, sport has been used to shape camaraderie, friendship and trust. For the Canadian soldiers who were based in Bexhill between 1917 and 1919 sport was a component of training for the frontline in France. Sport was a way of developing military tactics and values, enhancing the

fighting efficiency of Canadian soldiers and maintaining discipline. Individual sports, such as boxing, were valued for developing fighting spirit, while team sports built confidence and cohesion. As the Canadian Training School (C.T.S) magazine, Chevrons to Stars, put it: sport conveys to others that their comrades to the right and left are capable of doing their share at the critical moment. Canadian sport was equally important for the people of Bexhill. Canadian sports events filled a void left by the suspension of local leagues. On 22 August 1917, the C.T.S held a sports day in Egerton Park. The Canadians donated the proceeds of the day to the Bexhill Trust, a new organisation established to alleviate poverty and advance education in the town. Herein is the link with today: charity. This example from the First World War tells us that Bexhillians possess a longstanding charitable spirit. This spirit is still evident today; a cursory glance of the Bexhillian magazine often shows an abundance of charity fundraising, mainly through sport. The lesson from history is that Bexhillians are a compassionate and caring people. This must be recognised and celebrated. ----

PARENTING – supporting your children When, all together, the ten or so churches in Old Town Eastbourne did a survey, they found the biggest stated need for many is the whole issue of Parenting – more than 60% of people interviewed in their 30s and 40s said they struggle with this issue. I wondered if it’s the same in Bexhill? In my earlier years I found it difficult being a Mum, and made many mistakes with my three children. However, I learnt from them (at least in time to be a much better Granny to my Grandkids!), and have picked up some great relationship tools along the way!

their path. This does not mean completely taking over. In the long run, this hinders rather than helps, because it puts out the message, “This is too scary, too difficult for you. I’ll do it”. But neither should it mean standing at a distance while your child struggles alone. Offering support involves showing through words and actions that we’re there for them, ready to help with the heavy loads, no matter what. Looking down the road towards growing up can be a frightening prospect. Your child needs to know he won’t be travelling alone!

Did you know? Children have 10 main emotional needs: • 1 Affection • 2 Acceptance • 3 Support • 4 Respect • 5 Appreciation • 6 Comfort • 7 Approval • 8 Attention • 9 Security • 10 Encouragement Each month we will be looking at one or two of these to discover the “needs behind the deeds.” Last month we started with Affection and Acceptance, this month we will look at:

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Coping with... depression Recently, I heard a radio broadcaster invite listeners to discuss their experiences of loneliness and how it has impacted on their lives. I thought how difficult it must be for people who are desperately lonely, and then it struck me that I had previously experienced the awful feeling of disconnection and social isolation. I have friends, family and a great social network, but these feelings of isolation and hopelessness were due to a terrible illness called Depression. One in four of us experience a mental health problem in the course of a year. Depression is different from our usual mood fluctuations and emotional responses to challenges in everyday life. It can cause us to suffer greatly and function poorly at work, home, with relationships etc. Day to day chores become almost unbearable. In fact it can, at times, feel like a long dark tunnel from which there is no escape. Symptoms include disturbed sleeping and eating habits, anxiety, irritability, unexplained aches and pains, reduced sex drive, suicidal thoughts, tiredness, feeling over-emotional, and a lack of motivation. Causes of Depression can be triggered by a life event such as a relationship problem, bereavement, redundancy, illness, hormonal imbalances, debt problems, substance abuse etc. Women are more susceptible than men, often after childbirth (postnatal depression) and during the menopause. Treatment may consist of medication, counselling, lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, and complementary therapy. The GP is the first port of call to discuss what is appropriate. The vast majority of research shows how effective complementary therapy can be in alleviating the symptoms of depression.

Reflexology and Depression Reflexology helps to relieve the symptoms of depression by stimulating specific nerve endings in the feet which results in: • Increasing circulation to organs; • Reducing toxin build up in the body; • Stimulating the lymphatic system; • Activating the endocrine system; • Inducing a state of relaxation, restoring balance and calm to both the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems; • Encouraging release of the natural feelgood hormones, endorphins, which helps to reduce the body’s stress response; • Clearing energy pathways, allowing for optimal nervous system functioning. Reflexology has helped me immensely through depression, and other difficult areas of my life.

football Competition season 2014-15 PLEASE RETURN ENTRY FORMS (paper or electronic versions) TO VERNON FINDLAY BY 10th AUGUST 2014 PLEASE.

The rules are very simple!!! All you have to do is to complete the entry form showing where you think each of the twenty teams in the league will finish in the 2014 – 2015 Premiership. You can make up to three predictions at £10 per go. At the end of the season, the final position of each team will be compared against your forecast. For each position you are different from the end result, you will be awarded 1 point. Therefore if you predict a team will be 1st and they are 3rd you get two points. Similarly if you predict 20th and they finish 15th, you will get 5 points. If you get it right of course, you get nil points! The winner will be the person with the lowest number of points. Interim results will be provided at least monthly at the Rotary Business Meeting and in the public section of our website at www. bexhill.rotaryweb.org. If there is a tie at the end of the season then the FA Cup / Capital One Cup winner / final rounds results will be used to decide the tie break winner. Prizes will be awarded to the first three entries - £100, £50 and £25. A wooden spoon prize will also be awarded. A minimum

of 50 entries is required for the competition to go ahead. The proceeds this year will be used to support Homecall, Bexhill Caring Community and other Rotary charities. Our aim is to achieve 110 entries! Will you help? We do need your support! The recipients need your help! Historically, it has been seen that those with the least amount of football knowledge have as much chance to win this as the football “experts”. Go on give it a go – have a bit of fun each month – raise some money for Rotary and local charities. If you are sending your entry by email and it is more convenient to give your money to a local Rotarian, please do so. However, please tell me in your email so I do not ask you to pay twice (as if I would). Thanks, and have fun!
