gardening advice for JUNE

YOUR gardening STORIES

Welcome once again to our monthly gardening column where we will try to keep you up to date with all the important jobs to keep your garden looking great all year.

week after planting out over 30 young plants only to find them all but stripped the following morning.

Well what a month May was, beautiful sunshine, just the right amount of rain and some quite cold and windy days as well.

Get planting – This is an ideal time to give your garden a real injection of colour if it has been lacking so far. Plant up tubs and baskets. June is usually one of the driest months of the year and watering will be crucial. Give priority to tubs and hanging baskets plus anything that is newly planted. It’s best to water in the early morning or evening making sure you direct the water to the compost or soil rather than onto the plants leaves.

This has produced a wonderful Spring, early Summer garden display. Flowering shrubs particularly Lilacs and now the fruit trees all looking wonderful. Something also growing well through May I am sure you have all noticed is the grass and weeds! Mower, hoe and hedge trimmer in hand here are some top jobs to keep your garden tidy through June

The Lawn

Mow!! Mow regularly, weekly if you can. Leave it to get too long and it will become a real chore. Use a high nitrogen fertiliser for a green lush lawn but please follow the instructions to avoid burning the grass.

Trees and shrubs

After flowering, shape and trim shrubs as desired. This is a good time to bring any back under control with a hard cut if necessary. Prune Privet and box. Please keep an eye out for nesting birds it is against the law to disturb or damage a nest!

Vegetable garden

Produce should be arriving into the kitchen now, lettuce, radish and early potatoes. If not there is still time to sow from seed for a Summer crop – brilliant fun for kids to get involved in too. Plant your beans – French and runners now – beware slugs and snails though, a distressed customer phoned this

Bedding and flowers

Weeds and borders

Hoe your borders regularly to keep the weeds down. If you do use a systemic weed killer follow the instructions and remember it will kill everything it touches. Do not use on a very windy day as the weed killer can easily drift onto precious plants and grass.

Date for your diary

See beautiful local gardens for ideas or a nice visit, the National Gardens scheme through June, for full details of open gardens see www.ngs.org.uk Long summer days and warm light evenings make June the month when even the most reluctant gardener will enjoy spending time outside. So remember after all your had work to enjoy your garden, however large or small, if you need a hand get in touch. Happy gardening!

food on the go

Rather than tearing around the shops buying pre-packed salads and snacks to enjoy on the go give a thought to things which we could prepare simply at home, cheaper and more suited to our own personal tastes. When shopping always look out for jars of vegetables in oil artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, capers, pasta, onions, cous cous, rice, nuts and seeds they can all be used to spice up your salads. Sausage rolls are easy to make and they don’t just have to have sausages inside! Once you have bought your puff pastry (seriously there are better ways to spend a morning than making it!) choose your filling: your favourite sausages (meat or veg) or shredded pork. lamb, beef or chicken, mozzarella or halloumi cheese then add a little something to give it that personal touch... chopped onions, grated cheese, sun dried tomatoes, olives, artichokes, stuffing, herbs and spices the choices are endless.

LOCAL FOOD LOCAL CHARITIES

Salads don’t have to be boring either and can be put together quickly and packed into small plastic boxes packed with ice packs to keep them cool for later. Small mozzarella balls tossed with basil leaves and baby tomatoes. Roasted peppers and onions sliced and mixed with artichokes; chunks of feta cheese flavoured with sprigs of mint is another easy choice. Couscous is very simple to make and carries flavours well herbs, spices and lemon juice, chopped spring onions, dried fruits, chopped nuts all add flavour and crunch. Pesto is another simple ‘sauce’ to make which can be stirred into any salad simply blend almonds, pine nuts, hazelnuts or brazil nuts ground with a sprig of fresh basil and a couple of spoons of olive oil.

Use your imagination and make your food ‘on the go’ special.

how much is that doggy...

‘How much is that doggy in the window?’ Fortunately, the days of buying ‘deliberately orphaned’ puppies in pet shop windows is over – but it can be hard to find the right puppy from a reputable source these days! The key is to do your! Here are some tips to get you started: • Do you want to buy a puppy straight from its family, or do you want a rescue dog – either puppy or adult. Many adult dogs are ‘part trained’ and an excellent choice – for others with more time, the ‘known history’ of a puppy makes the best option. • Read about breed temperament & needs before getting ‘hooked’ on a ‘look’.

ADVICE LOCALPET CHARITIES

Make a list of several of your ‘favourite’ breeds/types – it’s better to go for a good breeder of your second choice than a bad breeder of your first! If you want a family pet, make sure the breeder is genuinely raising the puppies in the home – including plenty of time out of the pen. Do the pups relax when being picked up & cuddled? Will they play with toys? Are they toileting on paper/pads? Are pups healthy - bright & active with clean noses , eyes & bottoms. Has the breeder flea’d & wormed etc. If possible meet both parents & check temperament – see the mum WITH the puppies to check they’re really hers! With pure breeds, check the pedigree for inbreeding (same dog lots of times), you also want to see health test certificates relevant to the breed (check online), vaccination card/microchip details etc. Which pup is for you? The bold determined pup that dashes forward and the shy pup that huddles for comfort will not be personality matches for everyone! The ‘middle’ pup may be easiest!

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

knock, knock, who’s there? It’s SHAME! We feel ashamed when we’ve done something wrong – or maybe not done something we should really have done. With genuine guilt, the focus is our behaviour – not on who we are. It offers the opportunity for saying sorry, making amends, and restoring relationships. In contrast, false guilt or feeling condemned aims at who we are – our person. It’s feeling rubbish, shameful, hopeless, discouraged about ourselves, rather than about what we’ve done. Guilt says “I did a bad, awful, horrid, rotten thing” whereas condemnation says “I am a bad, awful, horrid, rotten person through and through” (and since I’m such a horrible person, there’s no point in saying sorry, trying to make amends, because there isn’t anything I can do to make up for what I did – and no one would ever want to forgive me anyway! So why bother?)

have been feeling when you said those unkind words? I would like you to apologise to him” and follow through with making amends. “Since you wore your sister’s shirt without permission, you need to say sorry, and then pay for the shirt to be drycleaned”. As part of the consequences, making amends might include replacing damaged property, (maybe giving an opportunity to earn extra pocket money?), tidying up brother’s room etc. When adults too are able to say “I was wrong when.....” our children learn that conflicts and problems are not always their fault! Everyone practice giving ready forgiveness, and then let the issue drop! Watch out for times when a child shows a fear of losing your love or equating his worth with his bad behaviour “Cara keeps on telling me she’s sorry unnecessarily – her apologies seem to indicate she’s afraid of losing my approval or making me upset.”

One of the lovely things about appropriate discipline is it helps to protect kids from this. They learn that if they do something wrong, there are consequences, but with their parents’ guidance they can face those consequences and move on. They discover that their parents never stop loving them: they loved them before, during and even after the wrong-doing! As adults, we need to put into place a system of discipline where everyone “owns” their bad or inappropriate behaviour, and accepts the consequences – and ‘lets go of’ the mistakes of others! So 1) help them name the offense when one of your rules has been broken “I was wrong to take the toy home from Play School” Or, “I disobeyed you when I went to Tiffany’s without asking.” If a child is unable to identify the broken rule, then simply state it for them, leaving out any character judgements or name calling (liar/thief/lazy/ foolish) “It was wrong to take the toy home from Play School. That is stealing.” or, “The rule is: Before you go to someone else’s house after school, you must get permission.” etc. Then 2) encourage the child to say sorry to others as needed “What do you think Harry might

Or when a child blames himself for things for which he is not responsible “Justin has promised several times to be good if Daddy and I stop arguing”

Think... Step up the hugs and “I

love you’s” and reassure them again that there’s nothing they can do to lose your love.

“Keep it local” “Trustworthy and Reliable”

why do i need a will? The Courts are familiar with families arguing over the division of the assets of a parent who died without a Will. If you don’t want to run the risk of putting your family at war and want to ensure your family is taken care of, here’s what you need to consider. 1. Make sure you use a regulated individual as your Will-maker when making your decision as anyone can set themselves up as a writer of Wills. The Law Society says: “It is important that consumers are able to distinguish between those that are unregulated, uninsured and untrained, and solicitors who specialise in this area and offer a quality service”. 2. With effect from the 1st October 2014 new rules were introduced relating to who inherits what if a person dies without a Will. Under these new rules, where there are no children, if a spouse dies intestate then the surviving spouse or civil partner inherits the whole estate, rather than only £450,000 as was the previous case.

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

or bankruptcy. It is also useful to get advice from a solicitor if you have assets overseas because some countries will not recognise a Will written in the UK. 4. For children you need to name a guardian and check with them first to make sure they would be happy to take on the responsibility. In some cases, particularly for unmarried parents, having a Will is the best way to be sure that children under 18 will stay in the custody of your loved ones. 5. Making a Will is not relatively expensive; not having one could be more costly. If your needs are simple and basic, you can even use an online company, but using a solicitor or professional financial adviser who specialises in this area, offers peace of mind.

Where children are involved, under these new rules the surviving spouse or civil partner would inherit the first £250,000 and then half of the remainder of the estate, with the remaining balance of the assets being held in trust for the children until they become an adult. Siblings and parents of someone married and with no children, will no longer inherit a share of the estate if it is worth more than £450,000, the entire sum will go to the surviving spouse. However, this is a danger for unmarried couples who do not have any rights over their deceased partner’s estate, so you need to ensure a Will is in place to guarantee your wishes are carried out. 3. Many people have seen their property rise in value and some have more than doubled in value over recent years, but there is a price to pay in the form of inheritance tax. One way to mitigate this charge is to set up a trust; you can then protect some of your estate from the 40 per cent inheritance tax. Trusts can also be a good way to protect your estate for future generations in case of your divorce

singing AT THE DE LA WARR PAVILION We are pleased to offer some singing opportunities here at the De La Warr Pavilion this month. The Hastings and Rother Arts Champions – a group of young people who champion the arts locally – are inviting you to share your complaints and sing about them! Noisy seagulls, irritating mobile phone rings, dog poo on the pavement, late trains – this project takes the things that bug you and puts them to music. Artists Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen have created a world-wide phenomenon with Complaints Choirs across the globe (www.complaintschoir.org) and we’re inviting you to join in with the Hastings and Rother Complaints Choir. Share your complaint and sign up to sing in the choir at the pop up Complaints Choir Agency in the De La Warr Pavilion Rooftop Foyer Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 June. Or email your complaint and contact details to complaintschoir@dlwp.com. Musician Otti Albeitz of local band ‘Otti And The Voices’ will work with participants to transform the complaints into a glorious harmony, with a public performance on the De La Warr Pavilion bandstand on Sunday 21 June at 3pm. The following week (Sunday 28 June) we still have a handful of spaces left for Lorraine

Bowens’ Burt Bacharach Singing Workshop. Lorraine appeared on the semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent this year and created a media storm with her Crumble Song! Lorraine will teach you the beautiful harmonies of some of the great Bacharach numbers such as Walk On By and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head – and maybe give you a cheeky performance of the Crumble Song at the end! Book for this event on www.dlwp.com. Some of you will remember Lorraine from last Christmas’ Singalong and this year we are delighted to have her back with another great hour of Festive Singalong Favourites – this time with bells on! Lorraine will be joined by Sandra Winter, one of the UKs leading hand bell ringers, who happens to live in Bexhill! After the concert, we will show the classic 1944 movie Meet Me In St Louis with Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and The Trolley Song. You can book for this event (on Sunday 13 December) on www.dlwp.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

have you considered using pinterest? Do you use photos or video to market your business? I love Pinterest but just like other social media platforms it can easily distract me from writing a lesson plan or going through my to-do list. The images and videos pinned by others have provided me with a list of holiday destinations I want to fly to and some great gift ideas. My organisational side gets completely lost in the tips on how to organise the home and office and as a result I have designed my ideal home, the decoration and the furnishings. For a couple of years now, I have wrapped Christmas presents in brown paper with homemade card bows, with personalised black and white photos, all inspired by Pinterest! On my office wall I have a notice board. Pinned to it are a note or two; a few business cards, and some inspirational images (I am determined to win the Lotto, Postcode Lottery or Premium Bonds!). It is my visualisation board and also a practical way of keeping my most used information easily to hand. Pinterest users can have many notice boards and pin all sorts of images and videos to them. They can upload these visual delights from their computer or mobile device or pin them directly from a website, creating private boards that only they can see, or boards that can be shared, all helping with inspiration and creativity. People can follow other accounts or just the boards they have an interest in, having the ability to like, comment or re-pin. This is called ‘engagement’, having great engagement helps with your reach (those who engage with you + their audience). There’s an easy search facility on Pinterest, where we can find almost anything, so there is a fantastic

opportunity for your pins or boards to be found by an even wider audience! For these reasons I must use my Pinterest account more for my business and you should too. This platform is a golden opportunity to upload and pin images from our own website or blog which we can link back to. If your social media strategy involves the goal of increasing your website traffic, this is a social media platform not to be missed. When you have set up an account, please come and find me! Pinterest’s full of people like me, indulging in visual candy on a daily basis. More women than men use this platform, and just like Chocolate, us ladies can’t resist another piece! Your audience awaits.

hello care act! is your property protected? When an individual is in need of Local Authority care, the go-to document used by all social workers, care givers, local authorities and care homes to determine who pays for what has been the Charging for Residential Accommodation Guide – or as it’s more recognisably known – CRAG. The key word in all of that was guide – it in fact had no legal grounding and was in a way merely a collection of agreed policies issued by the Department of Health. It has long since been recognised that the interpretation and more importantly the implementation of those policies has very much been at the discretion of whichever Local Authority an individual needed care from. There are many case examples where one person entering care has been able to retain virtually all of their assets and their care funded by that Local Authority, whereas others have unfortunately found themselves in an area where the Local Authority has applied the policies to the letter and the individual has had to fund their own care, in accordance with CRAG. As some of you may be aware, there has been widespread ‘bending’ or complete ignorance of CRAG rules by Local Authorities, resulting in people paying for care which should have been free, & some paying excessively for care against what CRAG would ordinarily require. Over the past few years, the Government has reviewed the provision of care in England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland will have their own forthcoming reviews) and addressed issues such as quality of care, cost of care not only to the Local Authorities but to the individual needing care, and also costs associated with domiciliary, residential and nursing care.

So, currently, the care sector is in a state of transition – many of the implantation which affect care funding levels will not be settled and implemented until 2016, but the new processes for assessing care costs and the needs of carers are already now implemented in law if not yet applied by Local Authorities (there are reputedly many Local Authorities either ill equipped to apply, and in some cases ignorant of, the new legal obligations, in anticipation of the new funding levels being settled later. In short, if the need for care is still only a distant possibility, nothing. For those elderly clients, or those with a foreseeable need of care, the ways their assets are to be assessed, and the process to assess those assets, are going to change quite radically. Local Authorities will now have statute – based obligations to comply with which can only strengthen the power to recover assets, which may have been gifted away. For those who have elderly family members the recommendation is to book a consultation with an estate planning professional to protect as much as possible of their estates before is too late!

Coping with... infertility In the UK over 80% of healthy women will get pregnant within a year of trying for a baby and this number increases to 93% within two years. However, if you are 35 or over you are more likely to have fertility issues and it may take as many as three years before you get pregnant.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Acupuncture has been shown to improve fertility rates when used as a complementary therapy for those undergoing IVF and other assisted reproductive treatments by easing unwanted side effects, mitigating some negative effects of IVF stimulation, and enhancing implantation and pregnancy rates. Amongst the benefits researched and confirmed are the following: • Regulation of menstrual cycle • Improved sperm count and motility • Reduced stress and anxiety associated with infertility • Regulation of hormone and endocrine systems • Improved blood flow in the uterus and ovaries thereby increasing ovarian sensitivity and enabling an improved uterine lining for implantation.

The aim of modern fertility treatment is not only to achieve a pregnancy but also to have the healthiest possible baby. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress response and anxiety and this in turn may lead to a better overall hormonal balance within the reproductive cycle. Acupuncture offers support during IVF cycles which benefits both during the stimulation phase and during pre and post embryo transfer treatments. The ideal treatment plan is to start working with your acupuncturist during the three months before conceiving as this is the optimum time period affecting both egg and sperm quality. It is a good idea to come and have an initial consultation quite early in the planning process so that you can then plan together the best possible approach.

Acupuncture treatments vary from person to person, but are usually scheduled for at least three consecutive cycles (twelve weeks). Appointments include acupuncture, stress reduction and dietary counselling. Treatments work alone but are also an excellent addition to any Western intervention. If you are trying to get pregnant, an acupuncturist’s simple aim is to help you to succeed in the quickest and most natural way possible, with the best possible outcome.

create an oasis of calm In our busy and stress filled lives we all need to find ways to step back from time to time. Constant demands on our time and resources, particularly if we’ve got young children, can lead to a feeling of exhaustion as we work our way through a never ending “to do list.” Yet, it need not be like this.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

touch with nature allows us to get closer to the natural rhythm of the day.

If overwhelming demands are beginning to take over your life, try the following: Every day try to take some time for yourself. Just 10 minutes a day gives you the chance to catch your thoughts. Sit and focus on your breathing, just watching and feeling. Every time your mind wanders (as it will many times) let go and bring it gently back to your breathing. Get your children to join in; it will be good for them too. Alternatively, go for a walk and take time to think. Being alone with your thoughts can help you create that sense of distance and gain perspective and objectivity. Allow your children to run free, open space is good for the mind. Now the days are warming up and the evenings are longer, take time to live Al fresco. Breakfast in the garden with croissants and fresh coffee, a bit of gardening or a bicycle ride in the country or along the seafront. Taking a picnic or meandering in a boat (even if it just is in the boating lake!) can allow us to harness our inner child and get in touch with nature.

Start by making small changes, start by saying “no.” Also, remember the bottom line:

If you try to do everything, you may render yourself unable to do anything. Until next time, relax...and breathe.

bexhill town forum Shaping Bexhill’s Future Since its establishment, the new executive committee of the Town Forum have worked hard to understand what support it can give to Bexhill and concluded that there are two priority areas to consider in order to get it right. First is to address the many needs that Bexhill has in order to be restored to its former standing and secondly that the forum must reach out to as many of our residents as we possibly can. If we are to succeed in supporting Bexhill then it is essential that everyone in Bexhill gets the opportunity to hear what we are doing and to input their ideas and suggestions. So, during our first months we started with a focus on local governance and the possibilities that lie in store to change how we are governed. We have held three meetings on the subject and while we won’t have any more public meetings about it for a while, we are continuing the work of ensuring that a full and fair review is put in place, leading to a decision for our future, with the people of Bexhill involved in the choice. Our fourth meeting, on 22 May, then looked at the proposals that are in place and work that is being done by other agencies. We

LOCAL NEWS LOCAL CHARITIES

had displays by the Rowing Club, Bexhill 100, Bexhill Wheelers, the Town Team, Bexhill Alliance, Motofest, Roaring 20s and BRAG (Bexhill Rail Action Group) who joined forces with Railfuture, and we had talks about the link road, the Chamber of Commerce and the high speed rail proposal. These are all people who are working hard on our behalf. Away from the meetings we have opened up communications for Bexhill and its forum. We now make fuller use of email, have a Facebook page and our new website is up and running (www.bexhillltownforum. co.uk). Through all of these we are providing updates, progress and announcements but, most importantly, we need the public to use them to contact us, ask questions, raise issues, and provide feedback. Prior to using electronic communication much of the Forum’s activity and contact was limited to those who could make it to a public meeting. This restriction was not fair to those who could not attend and this is why we have made this important change. Now, even if you cannot attend the meetings you can be involved – and we very much hope that more people will choose to be.
