his feels surreal. This is the last time I will sit and think about what I will write. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the namesake of this publication could not be any more accurate. The Lord knew when He gave me that name. He was showing me the stories I was sharing, the people I encountered on daily, weekly, monthly basis were on their own journeys in life. And the same with me. You have watched my journey unfold the last 12 years. The one thing that was consistent besides the Lord, has been my husband. Our lives have drastically changed over the years. Where it is in my nature to go with the flow, it's not so much in his. He has adjusted his personality as needed, been supportive, laid down the law whether I asked for it or not, and at the end of the day--was always there for me no matter what. As I say goodbye to you, it's most important to me that you know this was never a sole venture. It's been a partnership. It's been a family venture. For that, I owe my husband an endless amount of thanks for the love and support he has given to me. Brandon Clay Oliver- thank you for asking me to marry you and move to Lufkin. Thank you for making me trust you when I didn't want to. I never imagined East Texas would have unfolded like it did in the last twelve years. I love you more than you will ever know.

Cathy Marberry, owner and designer of C.J. Interiors as well as Johnson Furniture's Lufkin store manager and in house designer, has recently transformed and updated the Johnson's home. The original style was Old World with all warm colors, so Cathy wanted to give it a fresh feel by udating with a lighter over all look. Randy and Brenda have 4 grandchildren and wanted the rooms to be comfy, casual and beautiful, but also kid friendly. Cathy accomplished their goals by combining a pallet of creams and greys with the existing beiges and accenting with turquoise and mink chocolates. A lighter take, but still warm and homey. The use of a variety of rug patterns and texutures show how rugs can complement adjoining areas and don't have to be exact matches.

5 PLANTS for your bedroom that will cure insomnia SNAKE PLANT Just like aloe, the snake plant also releases more oxygen at night than during the day! This improves your room's air quality and can make breathing easier on your body. ALOE VERA Studies have shown that aloe plants release a ton of oxygen at night. This pop of oxygen in the air can help f ight insomnia and will help your body stay peaceful as you dream.

WHITE JASMINE Not only does jasmine smell great in your room, but its powerful scent has several natural healing properties. Jasmine has been used for thousands of years to help with sleep and reduce your anxiety!

LAVENDER For centuries, lavender has been known to help reduce anxiety and stress, as well as slow your heart rate. This calming property is what draws people to use lavender essential oils for a great bedtime routine. But having the plant in your room will keep you calm all night long! ENGLISH IVY Ivy is one of the best (and easiest to grow) plants for bettering the quality of the air. The ivy soaks up toxins in the air and emits healthy, helpful oxygen! In fact, English Ivy can reduce airborne mold by up to 94% - you'll breathe easy with this plant in your room.

real food for the

NEW YEAR with Joyful Jane's Kristen Hay

22 | J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 7

I hesitate to even call this a recipe, and I'm kind of embarrassed to share it as such. However this is something that we literally make almost once a week for a super fast lunch! Â Just keeping it real...Â

food in 15 MINUTES

fa s t f r i j o l e s Broiled Burritos G AT H E R : 7 corn or whole wheat tortillas 1 can of Amy's Organic Refried Beans with Green Chiles 2-3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese

COOK: Lay tortillas out onto a large cookie sheet. Spread the refried beans on the tortillas. Sprinkle the desired amount of cheddar cheese on top. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve with a side of baby carrots or bell pepper strips. You can also add salsa, guacamole, sour cream or Greek yogurt as toppings. Yield: 7 servings, however I usually double this because my kids like to eat two a piece.

Come meet Kristen Hay at www.joyful-jane.com and find a wide array of encouragement and lovely things! Kristen is married to her sweetheart, Kyle, and they have 8 children. On Kristen's blog, she focuses on finding JOY along the way of life. She loves to share encouragement in the areas of being a wife and mother, eating and creating healthy food for our families, homeschooling and family life tips, calligraphy scriptures and personalized items, inspirational photography, organizing tips, home décor and more! Hop on over to Kristen's website www.joyful-jane.com and say "Hi". While you are there, grab some of Kristen's FREE resources, such as the gift of a free downloadable meal planning sheet and a hand-painted Calligraphy Scripture Print!

23 | T H E J O U R N E Y M A G A Z I N E

It is so simple that my little kids can make them by themselves, and you will often hear them fighting over who can sprinkle the cheese. They only require three ingredients for the basic version, however sometimes I do make them more interesting by adding any leftover meat bits (chicken, beef or turkey...whatever I find in the fridge).

food in the FREEZER & CROCK POT There is just something very satisfying about chili, and my entire family loves this recipe! Since I have an army at home that I am feeding (there are 10 in our family), I usually make a double batch of this chili so that we can do multiple things with it like serve it to company, freeze some or use it for topping enchiladas, etc...

company CHILI G AT H E R : 5 lbs 90/10 ground beef 2 - 1 lb. packages frozen Seasoning Blend (Seasoning Blend is a mixture of chopped onion, bell peppers and celery) 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 - 6 oz. can chopped green chilies 1 - 16 oz and 1 8 oz. can tomato sauce 2 cans regular Rotel tomatoes with green chiles (mild for less kick) 1 can mild Rotel tomatoes with green chiles 1 ½ tsp garlic powder 1 ½ tsp pepper 1 tbsp salt 1/4

tsp cracked red pepper f lakes

½ tsp Tony Chachere's seasoning

This recipe makes a huge pot, so if you have a smaller family, feel free to half the recipe.

½ tsp cumin 2 ½ tbsp chili powder (Optional additions--shredded cheese, sour cream and pinto beans - I add a lot of beans for my kids).

COOK: Brown beef and drain off fat. Add seasoning blend and garlic and sauté about 10 minutes or until onions begin to become translucent. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 1 hour on low or it can be cooked all day in the crock pot after the beef is browned, if you prefer that method. This makes a giant pot, but I like to divide it into two pots and add lots of beans to one pot for those who prefer beans in their chili. The chili can also be stretched by serving the it over rice. It freezes great, and is always a hit with everyone.

CORK

Often forgotten, cork is trying to make a comeback in 2017.

It’s casual yet sophisticated, which is rare to see. How to give cork a chance without overcommitting? Try adding a cork accent wall, and go from there. (Hint: Cork is perfect as an accent wall in an office as you can tack important documents to the wall!)

M AT T E B L A C K F I N I S H E S 2016 had an influx of brass metal accents. (Think finishes, accessories, etc.)

Whether in

the kitchen or bathroom, people love using brass every chance they get. Matte black is similar to brass in the way that it feels bold and is likely a showstopper in the space.

The difference

between brass and matte black is that brass lacks the depth that black finishes have. That being said, these two metals complement each other in a fabulous way. I highly recommend using them together if you’re up for it.

TA U P E WA L L S Sherwin Williams named “Poised Taupe” as their 2017 Color of the Year. This was a big change from Sherwin William’s 2016 Color of the Year, “Alabaster”, a tried and true white. Some complained of white being too boring to be named Color of the Year, while others who were tired of their muddy, beige walls opted for white walls as a way to lighten and brighten their space. I found that most people had strong opinions of white walls, and taupe is a great alternative if white isn’t for you. Taupe is far from dated like some beige shades. It instantly adds interest and depth to a space while still staying neutral.

O L I V E R

More than likely you received the lecture, "birds of a feather," and "you are the company you keep." The older you get, you realize whoever uttered those words for the first time were wise beyond their years. I am beyond blessed to have this group of women play a role in the person I am today. It's amazing how God uses people in our path at the perfect moment. When I reflect back on the last twelve years, there have been many seasons in my life. Every single woman standing along side me in this photo made a lasting impact. It is emotional for me to see these women standing with me, and I know exactly where I was in life when God used them to better me as woman, mom, wife, friend, or businesswoman. I am thankful for each one. Every one of these women have taught me something in their

own special way. They have taught me how to be fiercely loyal. They have taught me to see my own talents, but even more importantly, to see it in others. They have taught me how to boldly encourage others and speak those words outloud and do not hold them in. They have obviously taught me what beauty is on the outside, but that it means absolutely nothing without the pure beauty on the inside. They have taught me to reach out to others and pull them in when they need a shoulder or a hand or just a hug! They have shown me faith and courage, and made my faith so much deeper. They have taught me that motherhood looks and means something so different to everyone, but the deep love for our children? That's the same across the board. And one of my favorite lessons? Laughter fixes just about anything.Â

If this is what the company I keep looks like, I would do it again in a heartbeat. To my dearest friends who walked through the last 12 years with me, thank you for all you are and all you've helped mold me to be. I can only hope I've done, in some small part, the same for you. Those not pictured who are profoundly important in my life, all of my family. My mother and father, wow the things they have done for me over the years. Don't get my dad on his soap box! Both of my mother in laws, Felicia Dark and Sandy Oliver. Their help with my family and kids anytime I needed it is priceless. My best friend Carol Hatcher who without her ear, either the magazine or my marriage most likely wouldn't be here today. A few more of my girlfriends unable to be in the photo Kody Jenkins, Marcy Weibe, Julie McManus and Samantha Miller.Â

I have the Inspire Journaling Bible ($25) given to me by my sweet husband for my 30th birthday. I do recommend having a second Bible of a different translation (I use NLT) for comparison, but also to use for any entries that may cover some scripture. I also LOVE my date stamp, which is a luxury because I could just write the date by hand. lol. I also recommend buying a fine point marker that won't bleed through thin Bible pages. Read reviews as they are not all created equal. There's no need to break the bank to do this. I buy all my stuff at at the dollar store or amazon.comÂ

This letter is as much to you all as it is to anyone else. I'll allow others to read

D e a r B o s t e n , B r y n n , B r o d i e a n d B a y l o r,

it, but the true message is for you.

In 2001, I was setting up life in a new town and as a new bride; I was what you might call "a fish out of water." Not only that, my Knight In Shining Amor who needed me with him in his town, worked the midnight shift as a police officer (insert eye roll). While his profession was everything noble, leaving his new bride to fend for herself was NOT noble. Not in my mind anyway. But give this girl a challenge, and she not only survives, she gets creative! From the very beginning I figured out - and to this day it is the advice I give to new people in town - find a good circle of friends and you will love this town! God knew what he was doing when two of my very first friends were Jessica Brown and Leslie Day Ball. Slowly but surely, Clay and I planted roots in a place we knew felt like home and where we could raise you kids: Harmony Hill Baptist Church. And since then Kathryn Greene has become a major influence in my life. Soon after moving Clay and I found out we were expecting you, Bosten. We were thrilled! But what could I do from home and still raise a family? We began to pray. And to no surprise, God answers prayers in extreme ways. From these prayers The Journey Magazine was born. Before I held my own kids, I held The Journey Magazine. Bosten, even when you were in my belly I was working on this magazine. I hit the pavement trying to sell ads for a business venture that didn't yet exist! Do you know how hard that is? People had no idea what I meant when I said I was trying to sell a "community magazine." But I refused to stop. I saw it in my mind and in my heart! Our trademark quickly became monthly Inspiring Woman. There were so many amazing women in this town I continued to cross paths with, I knew I had to share their stories. I was humbled that they would share their journey with me and everyone who read the magazine. Since the beginning, the magazine has evolved into something even greater and larger than I ever imagined it would be. God has a crazy way of showing off sometimes. But now it's not just Bosten, it's also you Brynn, and you Brodie and even little Baylor. And I don't have to tell y'all how busy we are. And yet, I absolutely love it. Little fact about your momma? I love running the roads. I love living out of my car and managing my day off the alerts and reminders from my iPhone. Why? Because that means you all are doing something you love and enjoy. And if you're happy, I'm happy. (And if I'm not happy....well, you're daddy makes sure I'm happy.) And yet, if we aren't on the roads, any spare minute I have, you will see my phone in my hand or my computer in my lap working. This is all you kids have ever known. And I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing.

One of my favorite quotes to live by is "Less is more." My aunt used to tell us "Less is More" as young girls as we were trying to figure out who we were with makeup and fashion. She would remind us that "simple" really is so beautiful. As I grew up, I realized how that quote can be applied to more than just hair and makeup. And so, as I approach 2017, I wanted this year to be something different. For me. For your daddy. For all of us. I don't want to feel like I just survived another day, I want to feel like I gave everyone the best of me. And as I get older I learn that the less everyone else gets of me, the more those that matter the most get of me. That's you all! I want to live a year where I am giving my time and attention to fewer things. And as my sweet friend reminded me, I will never regret putting my family first. Never. So that is what I am doing this year. Less, will indeed, be more. And it starts by focusing on my family, my friends and handing over my very first baby: TJ Mag. But I have zero doubt it will be in the greatest of hands with Kim DeVore Ogden. She will be the new owner and passion behind the magazine starting January 2017. And kids, trust me, anyone who knows Kim knows that her passion and excitement are contagious. I know this is the best thing for us and for the magazine; we get to sit back and watch her amazing ideas unfold every single month. It's important in life, kids, to thank those who helped you walk through a season in your life. Always remember that! I want to thank everyone who has walked this journey with me. All the advertisers over the years, the inspiring women and men and families, all the contributors, everyone who works with me and helps me on a monthly basis, THANK YOU! God has done so much more through this magazine than I ever expected could be done. And I can rest easy knowing He is not even close to being finished.

-WITH-

2016 was a heck of a year. My husband started his second career as a pilot with Southwest Airlines, I turned 36, our one and only child began kindergarten (cue the tears), I found God, made some new friends, joined a few more civic clubs, left a great job, got a new tattoo, and began following Him with “faith not fear”. Yeah… 2016 was definitely one for the books.

KIM pg. 52

Had you asked me last December where I might be a year down the road, I definitely would not have said, “taking over The Journey Magazine”! But I’ve heard God has a sense of humor and if nothing else, I can see the humor in this situation. Kim Ogden at the helm of a Christian-based magazine would’ve thrown even the dullest of personalities into fits of laughter only a year ago. Yet here I sit, looking down the road of 2017 with hopeful eyes and a heart full of gratitude. He brought me to this point for reasons only He understands and I accept the challenge and look forward to the journey ahead (pun intended). This next year promises to be full of new experiences, a steep learning curve, fear, courage and hope. My family and friends have already promised to provide me with support, laughter and plenty of caffeine. I in turn promise to provide you, our loyal reader, with a beautiful magazine written by the community, for the community. This next year will be a whirlwind of awesomeness; I hope you guys are ready for the ride. Hugs – KO You may recognize this handsome guy, Stewart, from our October 2016 issue! What an amazing dog he is and story he has.

by: stephanie oliver

There are some things as a mom you just love doing. You love wearing that badge of honor that you are a mom. You love checking that box, saying yes I served my time. Then there are days when you despise the fact that you ever had children. When you think to yourself, " Who are these kids and why are they staring at me?" Yup, those are the days you realize, no one can bail you out. Well, kids birthday parties are one of those things I dread attending. And it is strange to say that I feel that way, because I love throwing a birthday party! I know, it doesn't make sense. But what makes complete sense now are why so many parents drop their kids off and run errands. That always blew me away, but I COMPLETELY get it now.

62 | J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 7

You never know the simple things God puts in your path laying the groundwork for years later in your life. Well, in 4K, my daughter Brynn kept talking about a new friend she had met on the playground. This new friend wasn't in the same class so I had no idea who she was. She would go on and on about her, so I was really curious to meet her. Then, one of those fun mom moment arrived....another birthday party! We arrive to the party, play a little while. Then I hear Brynn saying the girls name, "Remi, Remi, Remi!!" So of course I go over and say is this your new little friend you are always talking about? They smile so big and then go on. I immediately try to find her mom. So I walk up to a lady sitting on the back porch, we chit chat and introduce ourselves and low and behold, it's Remi's mom. She was rather shy and reserved. She explains how they just moved to town. I always remember her saying my parents have begged me to move back home and they just kept sweeting the pot until we couldn't say no. We had a nice visit, and another jewel was added to our crown for yet another birthday party attended. Later that year, we bumped into each other again. This time the location is laughable, only because what I know now. We bumped into each other as we are walking into Academy of Gymnastics and Dance. We do the, Oh hey! How are you. What class is your daughter in?" I honestly do not remember the exact classes she said but replaying in my head 7 years later, it heard something like, "Remi is on ballet company, cheer team, and a private gymnastics class." I do remember thinking oh wow, that's a lot and great. You are such a sweet mom to take that on and let her do so much! Side note: Knowing what I know now, that is one story I love hearing her retell, why they never signed up for dance ever again.

We will have to ask her to write about it one month. The second part of our conversation that day under the awning at Academy of Gymnastics and Dance was the most important. Melissa went on to say, my mom keeps telling me I should write in your magazine. If you ever need anything, let me know and I would love to write something. Fast forward seven years, you are welcome Melissa. You are welcome for the big break! When you get your Hollywood Star, I expect to be in the top 4 thanks you's. No, no, not really. I say all this because I can vividly remember that fall day at the birthday party clearly like it was yesterday. Sometimes reaching out to a total stranger, and double it with a female total stranger--that can be a very gut wrenching thing to do. But for some reason that day, that encounter, there wasn't any fear, any worry, because of the excitement in my daughters voice when she talked about her new friend Remi. I knew if my daughter loved this friend so much, I needed to meet her momma! I am so thankful I took that chance. I made myself vulnerable. I went into the unknown. I would have never guessed the plans God had for our friendship. Seven years later, I am thankful for Brynn and Remi and kids birthday parties. You never know the simple things God puts in your path laying the groundwork for years later in your life.

The past decade has been filled with incredible advances in technology. However, with the benefits of these advances come multiple challenges for parents. A very important challenge is figuring out how to raise technically savvy children without harming them by allowing them to lose themselves into a world that isn’t reality. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has come out with recommendations for parents. These recommendations are summarized here: •

CHILDREN UNDER 3 generally do not gain any benefits from use of media (television, smart phones, computers, etc.) The AAP states that children this age need “hands on exploration and social interactions with trusted caregivers.”

CHILDREN AGES 3-5 should be limited to 1 hour a day of media use. During these years children are developing higher order thinking, emotional control and creative thinking which are best taught in play that is not structured nor digital. They need responsive parent interactions to develop critical social skills.

SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN. Various recommendations exist for school aged children. They are more specific and include not allowing children to have electronics (TV’s, smart phones, ipads, computers, etc..) in their bedrooms at night. It is important for families to schedule media free time each day to interact. During homework all media should be off unless it is necessary for the homework. Families are encouraged to have a “family media use plan” which allows parents to discuss rules and expectations regarding media use. In general screen time is best limited to less than 2 hours per day on average.

Children who spend more than 5 hours a day watching TV have a five times risk of obesity compared to children who are limited to less than 2 hours. Also, parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s internet exposure for the possibility of cyberbullying, sexting and solicitation. It is important to have frequent conversations with our children about what they are watching on TV, as well as, what they doing on their electronics. Parents should always be open to discussing and sharing anything on social media that may be questionable for your child.

Experts share their advice on ways to be present with your family in 2017.

Families can have the best 2017 by enjoying simple everyday moments with one another and committing all of their plans to the Lord. Each day should not be about filling every second with things to do and places to go, but rather being present in each season of life.

Meredyth Byrd, LPC-I Make education a priority. While spending time together, learn together. Then share that experience with kids who are less fortunate. Family isn't defined by the people living in your home. Our community is your family, and to have the best year possible, you must see the possibilities around you.

Dr. LaTonya Gofney LISD Superintendent

Take time to be present with your family. Intentionally focus on what is taking place "in the moment" without preoccupation of outside distractions. There isn't anything that comes close to the significance of your family. Make your time together meaningful.

Dr. Sherry Durham, St. Cyprian's Head of School

Strengthen communication within the family. Set aside family time just like we do for church, school, sports etc. put away electronics and get back to the basics: communication. What I share with families, "Communication within the family is extremely important because it enables members to express their needs, wants, and concerns to each other. Open and honest communication creates an atmosphere that allows family members to express their differences as well as love and admiration for one another. It is through communication that family members are able to resolve the unavoidable problems that arise in all families." It is like that saying, if we don't listen to our family members about the little things, then they won't come to us about the big things

I have childhood memories of hanging around an old bait and tackle shop in the town where I grew up. It was a hub for that area of coastal Alabama. Next to the bait shop was a hardware store, and next to that was a boat dealership. People would trickle in and out, and groups would gather to tell about the big buck they saw yesterday and discuss how much lumber they would need for the ladder stand they planned to build. They’d buy their bucket of worms, then stop by the dealership to dream about that 14’ bass boat, as they headed out for an afternoon of tossing a line from the bank. It was a place where people could share their stories, listen and learn from others, and dream big. We have worked hard to create that kind of atmosphere and a shared culture within our company. For me, it’s always been about sharing a space with people I enjoy being around. It’s about what you believe in and how you apply that to make a difference, and surrounding yourself with people who have the same passions. The first place I was immersed in that type of environment after I left home

was at Mississippi State. My decision to choose a major in the College of Forest Resources stemmed from my desire to surround myself with people who understood my passion for the outdoors and the lifestyle that entails. I’ll never forget a piece of advice one of my professors offered to me during my time there. I wasn’t doing well in his class, despite being immensely interested in the material. The subject was ecology, and I loved everything about it, but couldn’t seem to find an effective way to study. I approached him seeking ideas to improve my study habits, and he responded by asking what my favorite thing to do is. My answer was hunting, so he advised me to take my textbook and notes with me to the deer stand. He said that if you put yourself in a situation you love, the answers will come. That concept has stuck with me, and is the idea behind our company atmosphere. Put people in situations they love, doing what they love, with people who understand and support them, and they will prosper. After graduating from Mississippi State, I had the privilege of working for over six years at Mossy Oak.

We have recently partnered with Mossy Oak Properties to offer real estate services and connect people with their dream property. All in one place, someone can acquire their dream property, learn how to manage it to achieve their vision, and share that story with others. 80| |J A JANUARY 2017 80 NUARY 2017

What I experienced there was a manifestation of the concept my professor had introduced to me. They created a culture for people, and an atmosphere that fostered a sense of commonality. The vision for Nature’s Eye is to carry on that culture and maintain connections with the people who instilled the lifestyle within us in the first place. When I started the company, all I wanted was to enhance conservation, share stories, and connect people with the lifestyle I love so much. I’ve grown from tossing around ideas to myself in a coffee shop, to building a habitat consulting firm that has a positive impact on conservation every day. Early on, we created a facebook account to share iphone photos of the work we were doing, and now we have a full service media company. We have recently partnered with Mossy Oak Properties to offer real estate services and connect people with their dream property. The heartbeat of our company is about making land better and making ourselves better in an atmosphere that emanates the culture.

The heartbeat of our company is about making land better and making ourselves better in an atmosphere that emanates the culture.

Just like the bait shop, hardware store, and boat dealership, we’ve created a place where people can do what they love, learn from others, and dream big. Our hope is that our presence is felt in this way within the Mossy Oak Properties of Texas brand and our community. Our real estate office is housed within our newly constructed Nature’s Eye Corporate office in Lufkin, Texas, along with Nature’s Eye Consulting and Nature’s Eye Media. All in one place, someone can acquire their dream property, learn how to manage it to achieve their vision, and share that story with others. We want our business to not only help stimulate the local economy and provide jobs, but also enrich the community. We want the atmosphere and culture we’ve created here to spread outward and make a large-scale impact. We’re living the American dream and sowing hope for any entrepreneur out there searching for inspiration to do the same. As far as we’ve come and as much as we’ve accomplished, there’s always something more to pursue. With mother nature, there is never a finite solution. She is always evolving and adapting, and we try to take that lesson and apply it to everything we do. We love opening a new client folder and asking what we can do with this piece of land, who we can connect with this dream property, or how we can put more noise out there to continue inspiring others and ourselves.
