Samara Gallery is pleased to present Excursions Into the Unknown, a solo exhibition of new works by Carlos Canul. The artist’s most recent works explore creation myths and spiritual realms described by ancient and modern cultures. Canul’s painterly approach, peers into the mysteries unfolding in our collective unconscious. The artist writes, “Mythology is history at a far deeper level than that of our chronological histories. Esoteric theology holds that in the early stages of human evolution, long before we developed articulate language and rational thought, our external impressions were reflected in images. Modern depth psychology terms it the “collective unconscious,” a deep, universal, and impersonal layer of the unconscious, which contains the entire psychic structure, developed by all humankind throughout the ages. Its contents, which Jung calls “archetypes,” are these “primordial thoughts,” the unconscious images of the instincts, the universal images that have existed from man’s picture-consciousness in the remotest times.” Canul’s body of work depends on drawing and watercolors that eventuate his oil paintings. His process with oils invokes tidal forces of creation, destruction, and back again as creation, bringing forth the spiritual and physical visions in each work. Carlos Canul received a BFA from Southern Methodist University in 2000, and an MFA from Houston Baptist University. Canul’s art is found in many public collections, and has previously shown locally, nationally, and internationally.
