ECODYNAMIC ARCHITECTURE Human activity including construction had a huge negative impact on the environment in the last few decades, the architect’s role is no longer limited to designing a functional building but to minimize it’s impact on the environment and improve it’s durability as well.
In order to achieve that, this project proposes a different approach that stands on a thorough analyze of the site and it’s elements to not only create an ECO friendly building, but also a DYNAMIC, well inserted and fully inspired by it’s surrounding !
An Ecodynamic building is a building that uses the latest technologies and materials to be sustainable, but in the same time, it’s well integrated into the surrounding environment !
1
To explore this concept, we proposed an Environmental Awareness Center in a natural site in the city of ORAN – ALGERIA. The site is part of a forest with 1,130 feet of façade on the Mediterranean, with the presence of different types of flora and fauna, interesting topography and wide selection of local materials like wood, rocks, clay and sand
Since the theme of the project is making people aware of their environment, the idea was to project on the site a grid of two layers, one inspired by humans, and the other by nature.
2
The result is a composition that symbolizes the relationship between man and nature which is the mission of the center.
These 2 layers will be placed on top of the actual site layout in a way that provides maximum protection : - The spine that signifies protection, dynamism and flexibility will be placed on top of a path that was created by people to preserve the forest. Flat area
path
1- For the layer inspired by human anatomy, it was represented by the brain; the organ responsible for all human actions including environmental degradation, in addition it is the organ targeted in the awareness process.it is in direct contact with the spinal cord and which is protected by the spine and which gives a certain dynamic and flexibility to the human body. 2 – and for the layer inspired by nature, it was symbolized by a plant,

THE MUSEUM
LANDSCAPE
The shape of the museum is largely inspired by the geological aspect of the site. The idea is to make a project that has a strong relationship with the ground, an object that comes out of the ground but in the same time in continuity with it, a wave of earth melted into the landscape in a way that it’s hard to distinguish the architectural object from the landscape.
In continuity with the logic of awareness and the approach of human anatomy, the exterior layout is inspired by the nervous system that comes out of the brain and connects it with the other organs. They are designed as pedestrian paths that comes out of the observation deck and connect it with the other facilities.
GREENHOUSES
OBSERVATION DECK
Three greenhouses, each dedicated to a different climate type: Mediterranean, Saharan and tropical. Their form is inspired by the dunes found on the site
Is inspired by a dead tree whose leaves fell down due to environmental degradation, and to whom we add a protection gesture. - The leaves that have fallen to the ground will be facilities hosting the classrooms, laboratories and offices. The tree and the protection gesture are designed as an observation deck with a ramp to get an overall view of the park.

WAVE OF EARTH A section on the ground shows that it’s composed of several superimposed layers with a surface layer on top. The land is often affected by faults fragmenting it into several raised and sagging compartments. Metaphorically speaking, the lower layers represent floors and the upper layer translates to a corrugated roof. The faults create half-levels that allow the building to match the topography of the site that slopes 6 meters.

The module taken for the projection of this metaphor are the last 3 vertebrae of the spine projected in a previous phase. The vertebrae constitute the half levels and the intervertebral disc (the space between the vertebrae) which gives the body a certain flexibility and allows it to move in all directions is a space for circulation between the floors The shape of the roof will be afterwards divided into 3 parts, each resting on a fragment of the building, with ramps leading down to the ground, so the shape gives the impression that it’s emerging from the ground.

1) The Building turns its back to urban environment and opens up towards the sea.
2) The building is set back from the street to minimize the noise.
N
4) In order to ensure good ventilation, automatically controlled ventilation grills allow the admission of natural fresh air and the evacuation of stale air.
6) Solar panels are installed on roof to allow the building to use clean energy
7) The forest behind the building forms a mask that protects the facade from the sun in summer, meanwhile, it generates a refreshing air for visitors. 8) The wind direction is north-west, the corrugated roof helps steering it.
11 3) The orientation of the building minimizes the façade exposed to the sun
S 5) Installing a green roof over a building has several benefits. First, it provides the most natural roof insulation, it improves waterproofing, And absorbs co2 from air.

9) A slanted wall and a cantilever minimize the impact of the sun on the south façade, while the ramps work as sun blockers

EXOSKELETON
13
This project explores the idea of giving a site a new identity ! After the city decided to demolish an old residential building in the downtown of a colonial city where only classic style building exist , the challenge was to create a cultural establishment on the scale of the city, that stands out and serve as many people as possible. The idea was to create a building that is in rupture with the adjacent urban environment, a modern style building that becomes the new identity for the area.
The project proposed was a museum that highlights human evolution and remarkable achievements, therefor, The shape of the building is largely inspired by human anatomy :
The volume is a monolith inspired by human skeleton and translated into an exoskeleton.
14
15
The slope of the roof shows the evolution of science by man and vice versa
The circulation inside the museum is inspired by the blood circulation where the heart is the centerpiece which is represented by a patio
16 The frame is not random but inspired from the form of DNA, it’s start tight towards the urban environment and opens up towards the sea, this growth represents the evolution of science since the discovery of DNA by Swiss researcher Friedrich Miescher in 1869.
The project is inspired by the human skeleton which provides several aspects for the body: rigidity, lightness, stability and flexibility. Metal was the material chosen to translate this on the field.

1090 CARROLL STREET The building is a 4 story brownstone that we converted into luxury condos, with a vertical and horizontal enlargements. I had the pleasure to manage this project thru all phases from beginning to end, starting with surveying the building, to drawing existing conditions, to schematic design where I worked closely with the client to firm the condos layouts, and all the way to creating an Alteration type 1 construction documents. The application was approved by the department of buildings and the permit was granted.
