1965 Gibson Firebird III Excuse the pun, but this guitar is both an odd and rare bird. Gibson introduced the Firebird in 1963 as a late addition to its modernistic models, which included the Explorer, Flying V, Futura, and the mysterious Moderne. The hope was to better compete with West Coast guitar makers like Fender and Rickenbacker who were eating up a good share of the guitar market with their popular, contemporary designs. Gibson was well known for its high-quality archtop and acoustic guitars, but its solid body guitars were not nearly as popular as they would later become. So, they hired legendary Chrysler/Packard automobile designer Ray Dietrich to help design a guitar that would help Gibson shake its traditional image. The result was one of the most polarizing guitars Gibson ever produced. The Firebird is basically a 25.5” scale neck with automobile-inspired “tail fins” glued on to complete the body. Banjo tuning pegs give the Fenderesque headstock a streamlined appearance, and enough mass to make the guitar famously top-heavy. I hail from the camp of Firebird lovers. Leo Fender, however, was not. Fender felt the Firebird models too closely resembled the Stratocaster (If you ask me, it looks more like a cross between a Chrysler Imperial and Gumby), and as a result, the model was short-lived and went through many subsequent design changes. The 1965 Firebird III pictured here is one of the more rare transitional models. It features Dietrich’s reverse “tail-fin” body and a non-reverse, downward-drooping headstock known to some vintage guitar collectors as the “platypus headstock.” Although only about 2,000 “reverse” Firebirds were produced, they found immortality through the players who favored them: Texas guitar legend Johnny Winter was seldom seen without one, and ironically, Allen Collins recorded the classic “Freebird” on his Firebird. Brian Jones, Eric Clapton, Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera, and the Four Seasons (yup, Frankie Valli’s famous Jersey boys) were often seen playing their treasured Firebird guitars. The top-heavy, oddly shaped Firebird may have never earned the popularity of the Les Paul or the Strat, but to its devotees, it is nothing short of breathtaking — bright, bold, and beautiful.
