I
t is a constant with this organisation that the work never ceases and we remain busy as ever. That is not to suggest it is a burden. Another constant with Healthy n Happy is its success and these factors go hand in hand with one another. This year has seen the organisation become further embedded in the communities of Cambuslang & Rutherglen. We hope that our current offices become a secure home and base to operate from over the years to come. With this foresight we aim to serve the residents of these two great communities with conviction and compassion. I would like to thank the staff for all their hard work, the volunteers for their service and the partners and funders for their continued collaboration. We are transforming lives and transforming communities and this would not be possible without all of your help. We welcome into our family of staff Nick Watt, Connor Wilson, Sarah Agnew and Cameron King. However, it is with heavy heart that we say goodbye to one of our longest serving team members, Stan Middleton. His decision to take things easy has left us sad but also proud in the work he was able to achieve. Since our inception Stan has worked selflessly for the organisation and has been vital in seeing Healthy n Happy go from strength to strength over the years. From everyone at Healthy n Happy we wish you all the best of luck for the future.
In last year’s message I spoke about the fantastic opportunity Clyde Gateway and Scottish Government provided with funding to begin refurbishing the Old East Parish Church on Farmeloan Road. I am delighted to share with you the news that Phase 1 and 2 work is now complete, enabling us to open the doors of Number 18 – our first fully owned local building. We are now working hard to resource Phase 3 which will establish this venue as new community hub for Cambuslang and Rutherglen. This marks a fantastic opportunity not just for Healthy n Happy but all the residents in our communities. This new asset provides many possibilities for ways in which we can engage with local people positively and effectively. One such means is through CamGlen Radio which will have its home situated inside the community hub. It was a big year for the community radio station which, after 7 years of temporary broadcasting, now transitions to a full time service. The occasion was marked by a fantastic launch event in March that saw staff and volunteers alike taking a moment to enjoy the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Although there was great success stories for Healthy n Happy the year was not without its challenges. Cuts to core funding have made it increasingly difficult to continue to maintain our current output and this has forced us to look at other alternatives. A new model of income generation has had to be established and this has pushed us to look for solutions to enable our organisation to become self-sustainable. This will be a long journey to achieving this. However, it is one we are committed to and one I am sure we will succeed on. Finally, I would like to offer thanks for your continued support for Healthy n Happy and here is to another prosperous year. May Caldwell Chairperson

Executive Director’s Report Annual Report 2015
“Thursday is the highlight of my daughter’s week. It’s now mine too…..Since going along to the Hub for the youth groups she has become more confident, well behaved and socialises better. After the club finishes it gives us something to talk to each other about. It’s just me and her now, so this is great for our relationship” Local Resident
“All (of) my life I have been doing things for everyone else. Don’t get me wrong, I like doing things for other people. It’s nice to be nice, but at Healthy n Happy I do things for me too. I feel listened to and have been told I’m good at things which no one has told me before” Healthy n Happy volunteer

Quotes from various Healthy n Happy staff members
W
hat a year that was. Phew…. Seasoned readers will know I usually use quotes from wellknown or famous people. The quotes this year are not philosophical but they certainly are inspiring. They are real and they tell it like it is and capture the essence and impact of what we do and how we do it. It has indeed been a challenging year but it has arguably been our most successful ever. Number 18 our first fully owned local building, launch of Camglen Radio, being awarded the Investing in Volunteers national award and the Our Place contract are some of the many highlights. Can we sustain it? Yes we can and everyone is working flat out to make sure we do. We are realistic and excited. We are determined and hopeful. We see local people’s lives improving and we want to do more. We see local groups and communities working together and thriving and we want this throughout Cambuslang and Rutherglen. Life in Healthy n Happy is ever changing and our ability to adapt to local circumstances; from an individual to a whole area, is one of our strengths. The variety of services and activities is as demanding as it is impressive. The commitment shown by volunteer directors, staff, volunteers, local people and local groups is the most impressive of all. Together we will make Cambuslang and Rutherglen the best and healthiest and happiest places to live in Scotland. The genie is out of the bottle and there is no stopping us now. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the Healthy n Happy family and to all who have supported us. Your support and your commitment is really making a difference and helping to save people’s lives, improve people’s lives and improve where we live. Well done. Brendan Rooney Executive Director
I
think it’s an understatement to say that the year just finished was a challenge. What a year! So many opportunities and so many challenges, but nothing quite matches the highlight of going on air as a full time station on the 19th of March, 2015. A massive achievement and a great asset to the communities of Cambuslang and Rutherglen.
The newly announced benefit of the Commonwealth Legacy fund support was to be a great boon, but also a source of some new challenges. We found ourselves having to prepare to broadcast as originally planned and develop the volunteers to deliver what was necessary, while at the same time putting energy into trying to get OFCOM support to delay the start beyond what they would usually allow AND find a temporary home for the station. That this was delivered is great credit to the volunteers of CamGlen Radio, the staff at Healthy n Happy – particularly Tam Curry – and all others involved. We are very grateful that OFCOM saw the wider benefit of the developments and elected to support our request for a delayed start. After a search by staff and committee members we found alternative premises. We were lucky to have the support of Healthy n Happy who provided the resources to acquire a temporary studio room which allowed us to get on air with a professional delivery as early as possible, a facility that is still serving us at the time of writing in advance of moving in to Number 18. The support of Rutherglen and Cambuslang Housing Association was also greatly appreciated in this effort. The staff and volunteers developed a framework for the opening and running of the station as a 365-day a year, 24/7 broadcast station serving the needs of the local residents, a vastly more onerous task than a 28-day RSL once or twice a year! They also had to contribute to the planning of the new-build project and plan for the needs of CamGlen Radio and its service users. That both these tasks are on track is great credit to those involved, particularly the Technical Team. With all this going on the recruitment and development of volunteers has continued with 38 new members joining the team during the reporting period. The work with schools and young people has been maintained and developed, support for local events with roadshows and PA’s has continued to help raise our local profile. Income generation activities have been maintained. Through the work of volunteers and through a few successful funding bids we have had a new website built, bought much needed equipment and afforded all of the station’s broadcast licencing costs. To all the supporters of the station, the staff at Healthy n Happy who help so much, the committee and sub-committee members who help drive the station on, we would like to say thank you. In particular to the volunteers who give so much of their precious time, we would like to say that without you we would not have delivered CamGlen Radio – YOUR VOICE, YOUR MUSIC, YOUR STATION. Now, on to the future! Jim Brady Chairperson (CamGlen Radio)
