Find you’re dream. Chase it. Don’t stop.

THE PROCESS Brand Yourself It’s really important to develop a brand and image of yourself. Your resume is everything. It is ultimatly how you will get any internship, job, or opportunity. Make sure to be memorable. Get a professional headshot taken and let that be a inspiration of your overall vibe for your resume and portfolio package. Create a simple logo. Perhaps a business card with contact information.

Develop A Want I knew that I wanted my internship to be an experiance. I really wanted to get out to either NYC or Los Angeles. I wanted to go to a firm that was going to teach me skills that I wouldn’t learn in Logan, UT. Going to a very well known and respected firm that had some street cred was high on my list of priority. For the most part- I was looking for a resume builder.

Develop Goals Make a list of goals. Ask yourself what you want to learn. This is very important and helped me eliminate some other firms that I was thinking about working for. I knew I wanted to develope stronger skillsets in programs like photoshop and autocad while still enjoying the overall style and esthetic of the studio.

THE CITY Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States in terms of population and one of the largest in terms of area. It is the center of a five-county metropolitan area and is considered the prototype of the future metropolis—a city on the cutting edge of all of the advantages and the problems of large urban areas. The glamour of Hollywood, Beverly Hills, the Sunset Strip, and the famous beaches have added to Los Angeles's reputation as a California paradise and have contributed to the area's phenomenal growth. Los Angeles is a city of fascinating diversity, incorporating one of the largest Hispanic populations in the United States, a major Asian community, and sizable populations of nearly every ethnic background in the world. The city offers something for everyone in its large conglomeration of separate and very different districts: a sleek, ultra-modern downtown, miles of beautiful beaches, mansions and stunning canyon homes built with opulent luxury, and some of the world's most glamorous shopping and dining. Beneath the glitter, though, is a troubled, racially divided city, with extremely high unemployment rates for young African Americans and Latinos.

THE WORK Staying Busy The most important thing to rememebr is to always stay busy. Never feel like you are bugging them if you run out of things to do. Sometimes I felt like I was constantly in their hair asking for more things to do. Alot of the time the assignments they give you are taken care of much faster than they thought it would.I was one of many other interns, so on some days there was less to do than others. For the most part, I always had something to do. I was involved in a model room install my entire last week which was a great way to end my 6 weeks at KWI. I did lots of autoCAD, library organizing, errand running, and lots and lots of photoshop renderings.

I wanted to build my skillset in photoshop so I did not mind one bit. I was sent out to do lots of things. Pick up frames, choose outdoor fabrics from the Pacific Design Center, buy and cut fabric and deilver to the seamstress, organizing past projects into their own binders, selected rugs, and search high and low for the perfect hook to hang on the outside of a shower. I learned alot about resources and how to search for items. I learned about detail and how important it is in design. I was taught to work fast and efficiantly while still looking professional.

5.

We believe everything you touch and feel in a project should possess a continuity of concept and cohesive voice. Not only do we want to create a beautiful space, we want to create an experience that becomes a destination in its own right with an individual sense of spirit and soul

THE EXPERIENCE I learned so much from working at Kelly Wearstler Interiors. I developed so many vaulable skills that I don’t think I could have received anywhere else. I got to see how a constantly crazy and chaotic firm works its way through speed bumps that the design world naturally gives out. Her studio does everything from jewelry design, and furniture, to fabric, interiors, and graphic design. She has done collaborations with many well respected companies such as Lee Jofa, Groundworks, and many others. She has built an incredible name for herself and an even more successful cpmpany that specailiazed in unbelievable work. Her taste is untouchable. She has an incredible eye for design and art that is constantly evolving. Working for Kelly Wearstler was an abosolute dream that I wish I never woke up from.

Dress the Part Look your best. Everyday. I know we all sometimes have days when we want to sleep in a little, but your hair in a top knot and wear loose fitted jeans and some flats- which can be okay, but not everyday. I am a heels girl so I wore heels almost everyday at work. I was constantly sent out on jobs which sometimes required me to walk a little bit so I always made sure I had a pair of flats in my car.

Write It Down

6.

Write everything down. I had my moleskin notebook with me at all times. Have your pen and paper next to you all the time. You are constantly told tasks and the last thing you want to happen is forget something. I wrote down every single task I was given. There will be times when a designer will come up to you and ask you if you had worked on a drawing a few days prior and having it written down to answer correctly is nice.

THE ADVICE Nail it Down

Show Off

During my interview, the senior designer complimented my portfolio and resume. I think that those two things are the most important pieces to getting the internship you want. Nail down the firms you want and then nail down your resume, cover letter, and portfolio. Showcase your best work. Get critique by professionals around you. They are always willing to help you.

You know your stuff. Believe me. Everyone tells you this but it’s so true. I was over prepared. I had the other interns coming to me asking me questions. I was involved in doing alot of photoshop work so I was their go-to intern for photoshop realted tasks.

Be Confident Your first day is going to be scary. You dont know one person and you’re going to walk into the room not knowing what to expect. Walk in there with confience and a smile.

Relax I was a nervous wreck. Don’t get me wrong- I was stoked out of my mind, but the thought of going somewhere totally foreign and fending for myself was terrifying. I had the most incredible support from people close to me that kept my spirits high leading up to my first day. Make sure you get a great nights sleep every night. You get worked hard, but it’s good for you.
