The Best Software to Make Printed Banners Banners are used by businesses, civic organizations, political groups and others when they want to make sure that the message they want to convey is easily seen from a distance. While many people leave it to professionals to make banners for them, others prefer to do it themselves. If you would like to create your own banner, there are several factors to consider before you start, such as choosing the right software for creating it.
Raster Graphics o
If you are planning on adding photographs or other detailed images to you printed banner, you will need a graphics program that can work with this type of image (known a raster graphics). One of the best programs on the market for this purpose is Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop has a number of tools and features that give the user the capability to create almost anything. On the other hand, Photoshop is fairly expensive and has a tough learning curve (though it also is well-supported by tutorials).
Vector Graphics o
Another class of graphics programs uses a format called vector graphics. Rather than being made up of thousands of individual pixels (as with raster graphics), vector graphics are made up of geometric shapes. These images cannot be highly detailed like a photograph, as those made using raster graphics can. But vector graphics programs produce much smaller files. In addition, these images are infinitely expandable to any size banner without any loss of sharpness. There are two major contenders when it comes to vector graphics: Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw. Both programs can easily create a quality banner. But they are also expensive and complex. Of the two, Adobe Illustrator is better-supported by tutorials and online groups.
Free Programs o
If money is an issue, consider some of the freeware programs that are available. GIMP is a freeware raster graphics program that can do many of the same things that Photoshop can do. In fact, the layout, tools and functions are so similar that if you know how to use Photoshop you will quickly be able to use GIMP.
OpenOffice Draw is a freeware vector graphics program that comes bundled with the free OpenOffice suite, which is intended as a substitute for Microsoft Office. While the vector tools in Draw are not in the same league as those in Illustrator or CorelDraw, it is capable of producing a quality banner for you to print.
