President’s Message Never had I imagined writing a presidential address, the reason being I could never get my thoughts aligned to write one. This was the reason I joined Toastmasters. I was invited by my life-mentor to one of the meetings of Business Excellence Toastmasters (BETM). The moment the meeting concluded I knew this is where I wanted to be. Over these years as a Toastmaster I keep asking myself and in turn every new member, what is a Toastmaster? I have the same answer as them, a Toastmaster is not a noun. It's an adjective, it empowers me. It gives me confidence in every aspect of life; be it personal or professional. It's a verb, a feeling. Every meeting is all about positive energy. Every memToastmasters teaches one the art of communication, and the right communication helps us in every aspect of life. This is BETM's 8th year since its inception. A year that brought loads of surprises for everyone, the biggest being my nomina tion for the role of Club President. Accepting the role and its responsibilities I became a part of a dynamic EXCOM team which boasts of a healthy mix of young faces and experienced veterans. A cohesive force keeps the team going, working on their roles and helping others in their roles.

Membership: Membership has been at an all-time high. This year with great efforts by the VP Membership and VP Public Relations we could attract guests and make them members in due course. The club has successfully achieved the maximum DCP points from membership that a club could achieve in one Toastmaster year (i.e. June 2019 to June 2020 for the present EXCOM). Business Excellence Toastmasters Club has also set an example in diversity. The club also has a good number of UAE nationals, which is a record in itself for a non- Arabic Toastmasters Club.

Distinguished Club Points: "Flash in the pan" is one well known idiom. BETM was successful in reaching the 10/10 DCP last year, that means we were President's Distinguished. This was the first time in BETM history and we the EXCOM had to make sure that this wasn't a flash in any pan! We have as of today, achieved 10 of the maximum 10 points! Yes we are a President’s Distinguished Club the second time in a row now. Over the last 7 months we have had successful debate competitions, speech contests which have encouraged and motivated every member in the club. A plan for the upcoming EXCOM has also been rolled out for them to achieve 10 DCP in the year 2020-2021. With support from the entire EXCOM and dedication shown by every member we are positive of BETM to touch greater heights, es pecially with DTAC in sight!

TM Sauud Sayed Husaini BETM Club President Technical Accounts Manager, Al-Futtaim Panatech

TM Sauud Sayed Mohamed Husaini, DL3 is the dynamic President of Business Excellence Toastmasters Club for year 2019-2020. Frankly Speaking Editors Note There is always a first time for doing anything. My whole life, I never thought that I will be writing an editor’s note for a Newsletter, and a newsletter which is of Business Excellence Toastmaster Club! A club where highly recognized professionals from every aspect of life meet. I think I may have been fortunate to go through these experiences in this lifetime! I confess here, I am a very easy going person. But, this Newsletter was a real push from our President, TM Sauud Sayed and my mentor and club SAA, TM Sameer Choughule. It was due to their regular follow up, that this newsletter became a possibility. Its always challenging to put together a decent collection of articles, events and items that we can call a newsletter. We received a good response for articles from both our senior members as well as new members, and there’s a good mix of topics to read too. I hope that you all will take the time to read them out.

“If you can laugh together, you can work together” Robert Orben

Our Cover page and cover story is supposed to be a surprise for one of the most respected personalities in the UAE Toastmasters journey, DTM Nagabhushan Balaji. This was long due for him having done selflessly and painstakingly so much for BETM and the toastmaster community as a whole. I hope we did some justice and made you happy sir! The rest is our regular content of Pinnacle includes BETM achievements, Smedley awards, new members and year club snapshots. TM Jay Khatri, our Treasurer was very kind to give away with a scrambled words puzzle for all to enjoy. I especially pay regards to all the BETM Executive committee members to support me with their insights, articles and suggestions on time when needed. And of course, special thanks to the Editorial team!

TM Huzzaifa Niazi Vice President, Public Relations Editor-in-Chief, Pinnacle TM Huzaiffa Niazi is an extremely shy but highly committed toastmaster with BETM. Pursuit of Excellence BY TM JAY KHATRI Theoretically, it means that if you are performing at a level far above what the average person is able to give to at that particular level of skill or situation, you are said to be excelling. This is all well and good, however, it doesn’t really provide us with anything practical or actionable to work with. Important question here is – how do you measure excellence? What are the specific indicators? These are not easy questions to answer because excellence could very well be purely based on perception and expectations that one holds of oneself in a given situations or more importantly other persons expectations. Pursuing excellence is a myth according to my humble opinion. Look around you – All great scientific, technological and artistic revolutions happened, not because someone wanted to be excellent, but because they were different – they dared to challenge the status quo prevailing at that time. Since our childhood, we are made to learn that to achieve a goal one must work at it constantly ( thereby attaining the divine and elusive state of excellence). Taking a shortcut is not allowed when a straight path is available. And yet a new school of thinking has emerged challenging this theory of excellence and encouraging us to deviate from the path, arguing that this is surest wa y to success. Professor Rita Coelho do vale has clearly stated in the January 2016 Journal of Consumer Psychology that it is better to make plans that fail intermittently like having more than required number of cheat days while trying to shed excess kilos from your body, splurging on luxuries while saving for your dream house - than to end up failing altogether and getting so demoralized that you give up your goals altogether. So, it follows that so long it is planned, it is good to be bad.

As Oscar Wilde had rightly said “ The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.”

Confidence is Beautiful BY TM FOUZIA BASHHIR Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” There’s so much wisdom built up in this one sentence because it’s true.

The official dictionary definition of confidence is, “A feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something. The quality or state of being certain.” Confidence to me is: Confidence is the only key, I can’t think of any better representative of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be her self. Self-confidence is a super power, only once you start believing in yourself, MAGIC starts happening. Confidence, like Art never comes from having the answer, it comes from being open to all questions. Confidence is the ability to feel better without needing someone to tell you. For long I thought confidence is a personality trait , people who are out going are confident, I thought extravert are those who are confident, but no not necessary you will find many extravert who are insecure , very loud mouth don’t have confidence the y are bossy on the other hand there are many introvert people who don’t want attention but are very confident , very clear and confident in their ideas , truth is confidence is not a personality trait at all, it is a skill, and we all can acquire this skill. To put thought to actions it is not assuredness it is willingness to try and that is huge turn around. Put an anchor to your thoughts, positive thinking alone is not enough. When you train yourself, you can do this you can do anything, truly thing can stop you is you, your thought pattern your habits, we can train confidence in our lives and defeat anxiety and even depression. How?

Raise your curiosity levels. Curiosity is the foundation of life-long growth. If we remain curious, we remain teachable and our minds and hearts grow larger every day. We can retain our beginner’s mind by always looking forward and discovering new experiences and uncovering new information.

VOL 3 | ISSUE 1 | APRIL 2020

Confidence is Beautiful BY TM FOUZIA BASHIR How to make it work for you: Ask questions and be curious because: 

It makes your mind active instead of passive.

It encourages you to be more observant of new ideas.

It opens up new worlds and possibilities.

It creates an adventurous response that leads you in a new direction.

Overcome self-doubt. If you lack self-confidence, you will always feel like you’re at the mercy of other people. When you assume a victim mentality, you are no longer resilient to life’s inevitable obstacles and roadblocks. How to make it work for you: No one but you is stopping you from achieving what you want to accomplish. It’s time to identify the areas in which you doubt yourself and remove those barriers. 

Do not hold your self-hostage, it’s you that give powers to others

Work on yourself, fill yourself, keep up “I am so full of myself my cup is over flowing

It’s not about others it’s about you

Face your fears. When we feel in control, we’re not afraid. When we have a level of comfort with something, it’s not scary. When we don’t feel in control, we don’t think clearly because our emotional brain is in the driver’s seat and takes over. This is why fear often seems random and irrational—our emotions are in control. To increase safety, FBI agents are taught to move closer to the threat. It does no good to avoid, deny or ignore the fear. Achieving Excellence in communication and leadership through creativity and innovation Pinnacle | http://betm.toastmastersclubs.org

VOL 3 | ISSUE 1 | APRIL 2020

Confidence is Beautiful BY TM FOUZIA BASHIR Think about your worst fear. Spend time with it. Now make your fear worse by getting closer to it. Imagine the worst that could happen. Now focus on your breathing. Feel your body relax. See, you didn’t die, did you? You’re on your way to conquering your fear.

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” No matter what you set out to achieve in life, a lack of self-confidence will almost always set you up for failure. If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? The problem is that, similar to self-love and genuine happiness, achieving total, unconditional self -confidence is an internal struggle.

Most of us don't even realize just how much power our minds have over us and the way we live our lives. Take a moment to consider how many times a day you say "I can't," or "That's too hard." We burrow into the negative because self-doubt and criticism is easy; I will conclude with a message “ Inhale Confidence, Exhale Doubt”.

Excel in Excel BY TM SADHIK BASHA It took almost thirteen years to get recognition for my hard work. I landed in Dubai on 6th May 2007. I was fresh out of College after completing my Masters in Business Admin, specializing in Finance. I was informed by Man-agement to Internal Auditor for monthly reporting activity. But I failed to perform as per the expectations of the Auditor due to lack of knowledge in Microsoft Excel. Later, they gave me a different task. That day, I felt very bad about myself and realized how much time we wasted in our college life without learning and practicing anything. Slowly, I started working on myself. Even though the company put me on different task, I was so much more eager to learn excel. I felt uncomfortable using the mouse, so I learned keyboard shortcuts in excel which made me even faster in my performance. Whenever Management asked me to submit a report, I simply used to perform quicker, faster and accurate. Two years passed by, but my chance of being part of the Reporting team never came. One fine day, the Auditor in the reporting team, who had ignored me, applied for his resignation. Management was looking for the right person to replace him. Finally, they couldn’t find any suitable candidate who can do better, than me. While handing over the reports to me, the same Auditor asked to me perform some job in excel. I surprised him performing the job faster with the keyboard shortcuts. He was amazed and appreciated me. From then, I was the person to handle Reporting. This job made me an expert in excel. Slowly, people started asking me doubts in excel and I used to resolve the problems in no time. In the year 2019, the current company, after seeing my expertise in excel, asked me to provide an intercompany training in excel for all the employees. Although a technically expert in excel, I lacked in confidence appearing in front of the stage. There was a lot of nervousness in delivering the training, however I was able to managed it. Seeing the feedback from the colleagues, they asked me to provide the same kind of training to our custom-ers too. Meantime I wanted to appear confident on the stage. I heard about Business Excellence Toastmaster club. Achieving Excellence in communication and leadership through creativity and innovation Pinnacle | http://betm.toastmastersclubs.org

Your Life Your Choice BY TM CHIRAG AGARWAL One Time I was flying from India to Seychelles. I boarded the flight and the steward came up to me and said, “welcome on-board sir, we guarantee take-off”. I asked her, “Landing Madam?” She said to me, “Pray to the lord almighty for a safe landing”. We all are aware that when we take a flight, the take-off is completely beyond us. We can do nothing about the take-off, it’s completely in the hands of the pilot. And when it comes to landing, even the landing is completely beyond our control. It’s in the hands of Pilot. Many times, when I fly and there is very smooth landing where we don’t even know that the plane has landed, people give an ovation, a loud round of applause. I have not been an exception either. Of course, the only thing is that we don’t give standing ovation, because the seat belt sign is still on. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the landing is also beyond our control. And what about the turbulence, the turbulence during the journey, during the flight is also completely beyond us. The wind speed is beyond us, when the plane passes through the clouds and the entire plane becomes wobbly. It’s not in our control. What is in our control during the flight is our CHOICE. Some people choose just to go sleep, yet others get completely drunk on alcohol. Some watch movies, some keep on munching something, yet others make new friends, talk to others and network. Yes, what to do during our journey is in our control. In the journey of life as well, the take-off which is our BIRTH, is completely beyond our control. We did not choose our parents. We did not choose which nation we are born in, we did not choose which city we are born in, we did not choose the socioeconomic class we are born in, we did not choose our looks, we did not choose the religion we are born in. Our take off of the journey of our life is completely beyond us. And the landing - Death, even that will be completely beyond us. I have heard many times people telling me that they would just love to die by getting a massive heart attack and dropping dead, no trouble for them, no hospitalization, no tubes, no needles, no trouble caused to others, in one shot go. Now, no matter ho w much we wish that, it is just beyond us. How we go and how landing happens is completely beyond us.

Your Life Your Choice BY TM CHIRAG AGARWAL And what about the turbulence, the disturbances, the problems during the journey of our life? Some of them are within our control which we can solve, but many problems and issues and turbulence caused is completely beyond our control because it’s caused by situations which are beyond us. It’s caused by people who are beyond us. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen. In this journey of life, the take-off, the landing and the turbulence is not in our control. What is in our control however is the choices we can make. When we learn to make those right choices, we learn to live a transformed, happy and fulfilled life despite of all the turbulence and problems that are going on around us. It is said when we are beautiful, it’s god’s gift to us. When we live our life beautiful, it’s our gift to god. Therefore, being a male is matter of birth. Being a man is matter of age, being a gentleman is a matter of choice. And as a corollary to that, being a female is matter of birth, being a woman is a matter of age, being a gentle woman is a matter of choice. Let us all learn to make right choices which our within our control as our gift to god, and thus live our lives as thorough and perfect Ladies and Gentlemen. Thank you!

Pursuit of Excellence BY TM NESREEN AWADA We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. – Aristotle When we want to talk about the pursuit of excellence, we need to define what is pursuit first and what is excellence? Pursuit is an activity that you spend time doing, it’s kind of a dream, you need to chase it every day, to make it happened. On the other hand, excellence is the quality of being excellent. Therefore, in order to achieve the pursuit of excellence, we need to spend time every day to improve your quality of work and results.

Setting an example of Excellence: Since, we are in UAE and particularly in Dubai, we can’t give better example of excellence rather than Dubai city and their leader, look everywhere, you can see the excellence around you from all aspects, you can feel improvement from the time you put on your foot in the airport, taxi, roads, services, telecommunications, restaurants, etc.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inspired all citizens and residents: By time of the awards announced of excellence, all the UAE citizens and residents, looking forward to participate in the competition of excellence, the initiatives are announced by TV, social media, streets advertisements, metro, taxi, etc. All of us know that UAE is one of the happiest (20) countries around the world and no. (1) in Arabic region. How does it work: Inspiration by leaders, the leaders spread their positive energy every day, by attending meeting, summit, seminars, sending motivational messages through social media, I am honored to quote what his excellency quotes who dreams great dreams and has the courage to get up and take action.

Pursuit of Excellence BY TM NESREEN AWADA  “Many leaders promise, we deliver.”  “The race for excellence has no finish line.”  “A true leader does not derive power from his position, but from his

ethics, from people’s love for him, and from his knowledge, education and excellence in his field of work.”  “Determination, strategy and vision for the future are our real re-

sources in the quest for excellence and success.”  “Excellence is a good habit one should acquire.”

Listed below are some of the most significant quality and excellence initiatives launched in the UAE in the past 20 years. the intent is to provide individual insights into UAE’s journey toward excellence. Dubai Quality Award: Dubai’s “Drive for Quality” began with a vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, and the vice president and prime minister of UAE, with establishment of the Dubai Quality Award (DQA) in 1994. The DQA—intended initially only for private-sector organizations—was introduced to improve the business standards of those operating in Dubai, and thus boosting external and internal trade. Dubai Quality Group (DQG): Established in 1994, DQG is a not-for-profit business organization to develop and promote quality and business excellence practices in UAE. The DQG has made positive contributions in raising the voice of quality and enhancing competencies. ISO 9000: Around the same time, organizations started implementing international quality management systems standards, including ISO 9000. In 1995. Dubai Service Excellence Scheme (DSES): To promote excellence in customer service standards in the private sector, and to make the experience of shopping in Dubai a pleasurable one, DQA office launched the DSES in 2002. Dubai will host Expo 2020, all of us will be witnessing the pursuit of excellence. We are so lucky to live in UAE, with such a great leaders, seeking always for excellence & happiness. References:

The Man The Journey DTM NAGABHUSHAN BALAJI

1. When and why did you join Toastmasters? I joined Toastmasters in September 1998. I joined the Abu Dhabi Toastmasters Chapter (1950U). I joined the chapter by accident as my superior wanted me to attend with him. But on day one, I knew that I was there to stay for a long time.

2. Tell us about your work profile, your family, and any hobbies and interests outside of Toastmasters? As of date, for the last four years, I am the Group Chief Administrative Officer in a Liquid Logistics company managing almost all support units. Previously for 28 years I have been in the Banking fraternity. My family is me, my wife and my daughter. My wife was a banker and is now a home maker. My daughter is an Architect and a professional dancer. My hobbies are reading, watching movies and learning from life’s valuable lessons.

3. How has Toastmasters helped mold you into the leader you are known as today? While I have been a leader in my school and college life, Toastmasters has brought in me the maturity which a leader should have. A leader is defined as “One who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way”. I had the basics of leadership grinded into me by watching efficient leaders performing at all levels. Every leader has a different approach and it is great to learn by watching them in action. A leader is also one whom people look up to for solutions to their problems. In Toastmasters, while we cannot provide solutions to all problems, we can at least provide them the guidance to handle issues or such problems. This is done by reading and understanding the rules and regulations stipulated by the Organization – so I have spent quite some time of my life in reading and understanding these regulations. People are the strength behind a leader’s success and today, I am what I am because of our members.

4. What is the inspiration behind pursuing DTM for a record third time? The inspiration is all about learning. When I did my first DTM, there were times when I was not aware as to why I was taking up this level and doubts of whether I performed to the best of my capabilities or could I do better? The challenge in me made me take up this path the second time. By the time I chose to start the second time, the whole program had changed and the manuals had changed too. This gave me the impetus to do better and also an opportunity for me to complete six more advanced manuals (there are a total of 15). The third time I started doing this path is because I wanted to master the art of communicating to people in a manner where they could understand better through clarity. But the best part of it all is because we have lots of stories to tell in our lives and share it with people for their benefit that being a DTM once and doing 40 projects may not be sufficient to share all of our stories.

5. Tell us about your herculean role as a mentor so many clubs in UAE. What advice do you have for mentor-mentee relationships? I don’t call this task as herculean. Where there is passion, there is no scope for any other emotion. I love mentoring and helping people improve their lives through better communication and by becoming better leaders. When we mentor a club, we are actually creating leaders out of that club and if the leaders have to be successful, they need to have good communication skills. Good communication skills come through performing, practicing and persevering efforts towards the goal. These can be achieved through the guidance of a senior member who has done it all and fortunately, I have landed in the position of this Senior Toastmaster member who has got the opportunity to create more leaders. Mentor-Mentee relationship is a very holy one. This is built on one single word which has the whole world underneath – TRUST. It is a partnership for a lifetime and it is a selfless relationship. In this relation, the mentor wishes that one day, my mentee should supersede my skills and be better than me. The mentee wishes that he or she can learn and be equal to, if not more the mentor in terms of quality. So, for all those who wish to have mentors, don’t just chose one because you need to do a projec t or go through a difficult patch in your life, chose well and chose brave so that your mentor will be a life time guide or advise for you in every field and in every part of your life as you wish.

6. What is your advice to new toastmasters looking to enhance their communication and leadership skills? My advice to all new Toastmasters is that “Rome was not built in a day” and therefore, do not try to rush through seeking immediate or quick results. There is no short-cut to success. One point which all need to understand is that a strong foundation provides the opportunity to expand beyond horizons. So, first build that strong foundation by sheer hard work, perseverance & positive attitude. The rest will happen as if it is magic. 7. If you had one piece of advice for every Toastmaster, what would it be? The one piece of advice for every Toastmaster is cultivate the skills of communicating to an audience in a manner which they will understand. As they say, do not listen to speak, listen to understand and then Speak.

DTM Balaji - Moods

8. What motivates you to continue the journey of Toastmasters? The one word Passion and the second word People. These two will always be with me and I shall forever be with Toastmasters.

9. One word to describe what toastmasters gives to an individual? THE WORLD. As the Past International President and the first lady member of Toastmaster, Helen Blanchard has said – “If you can get out of Toastmasters all that you can get out of Toastmasters, you will never get out of Toastmasters”.

This personal interview was headed by TM Huzaiffa, our VP, Public Relations after great coaxing and conditioning. TM Huzzaifa felt Balaji was too amazing a personality for him to sit with and ask questions. We are glad both the amazed and the amazing came out happy and with flying colors. Thank you VP, PR for the painstaking efforts! ;)

EFQM FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF EXCELLENCE BY TM ANAND PARATHASARATHY TIRUPATHI, VC4 ADDING VALUE TO CUSTOMERS Excellent organisations consistently add value for customers by understanding, anticipating and fulfilling needs, expectations and opportunities. Several value-added services such as online ordering, mobile app, integrated maintenance and supply services, 24/7 service, and customized solutions for special projects demonstrate the commitment of the organisation to enhance the relationship. The organisation utilises the feedback from customers in development of new products with involvement of responsible internal departments. Regular review of competitor’s offerings results in changes to existing products & services as well as inputs to new products & services. Case Study: IKEA – In the first quarter of 2019 launched a new initiative for customers to rent furniture instead of buying if they know for how long they would use. This is a great initiative as it would ensure that the customers do not use the flatpack furniture just for few months and then throw them away. The pilot project launched in Feb-March 2019 was a great success and IKEA would roll this out in all its stores across the world.

Lights, Camera, Action & Photography BY TM ZAKAUDDIN AHMAD, LD1 A good photograph holds the best moments and worth a million words. When you ask people what possessions they would like to have forever with them, one of the most frequent answers is the photograph album or a computer with their digital images. This impulse to save our recorded memories is a powerful force which tells us much about the role of photography in our lives and our constant desire to distill our most precious moments into images. Photographs are part of our legacy, our personal story, a timeline of our lives filled with faces and places that we love. The hundreds of images come together to form a narrative of our lives. The significance, however, may be for others who search for the person we once were or the places we once knew. They freeze moments of our lives which pass remarkably and which seem to have little importance to us at the time. They can be small pieces of a jigsaw that complete the larger picture of our lives. They evoke nostalgia. They serve as a chronicle of our lives. They tell the story that we don't always speak. They're what we leave behind for our children, offering a way to share our stories with generations to come. iI today's world, it has become even more important. Other than personal reasons, we need photographs for other important reasons too. Your media represents your business. Like, if someone starts a new business, good images of what he wants to do can grab attention of masses more than anything else. Advertising is all about photography. When it comes to successfully marketing and promoting your business, professional photos are a MUST no matter what industry you work in. Graphic designing, magazine features editor, medical illustrator, press photography, television camera operators etc are all bound with photography in fact, there will be hardly an aspect in life which can work without photography and most importantly if someone is either getting engaged, married, having kids or organizing corporate events such as seminars, business conference, sports festivals, workshops and cultural festivals. One of the most important feature in toastmaster meeting is the photo shoot and group photo at the end of the meeting. May be you will forget the Toastmaster meetings in near future but when a photo for a meeting will come in front of you all the memories will come back to you with a pleasant breeze and enrich you. You definitely need a good photographer who will freeze all the beautiful moments which they can relive every time they will look at those photos. That’s why we have a shoot master at most of the meeting to capture those amazing and life long memories. Lights, Camera, Action & Photography BY TM ZAKAUDDIN AHMAD, LD1 Have you ever attend an event that hired a well-experienced photographer and noticed, or should I say, not noticed them blending in? Capturing moments without disturbing the event or any guests. That’s what a true professional photographer does. They rely on your business satisfaction, which means being professional and courteous before, during, and after your event is done. It’s a completely trouble free solution. Professionals would rather help you plan, we have a good idea of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to costing and planning the photography, videography or both. More often than not, a professional photographer knows how best to budget as per wishes and needs of our customers.

A lot of freelancer are doing this job at much less rate and help you steer towards what would work best for your vision of the day. You will have safe and secure image archival, fast delivery and heirloom quality. Even if you can’t afford photographer or a freelancer then just take out the mobile from your pocket and shout picture everyone will be gathered in fraction of seconds. You will get angle of your choice and results immediately without much hustle. In case you can’t get good angles or lighting still you should not be worried as there are multiple mobile applications and picture editing tools which help you get the acceptable results. But remember from the right lights to the right angles, professional photographers know how to make every image look the best shoot. The most important thing you can do is, make sure that your memories are well-preserved. Regards.
