Vermont THE PAST TO THE PRESENT Algiers, Vermont
Unincoroprated communities are regions of land that do not have their own government
Algiers, Vermont is an unincorporated community in the town of Guilford. Its first building was the Tracy House built in 1789. Algiers was named rather unconventionally. It was named by Brattleboro residents who played cribbage with a group of residents of East Guilford whom they nicknamed the Algerian Pirates. In the 1790's, a gist mill was built in town and Algiers became a hub of activity, but like many small Vermont towns, in modern day residents saw it falling into decline. In 2004, the Friends of Algiers Village (FAV) was formed to help revitalize the historic town. Algiers was incorporated as the Village of Algiers in 2005. It is and continues be a success story in Vermont Downtown revitalization.
