Architectural Apparitions: City of Collective Memory
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
6 CREDITS | FACULTY: Constance Vale
Florence is vibrantly animated by the life and culture of its citizens and, simultaneously, filled with apparitions and imprints of the past. This studio asks you to frame a history of the city as both a living social system and an archive of collective memory. Using media that hybridize the past and future—including drawing, printmaking, fotoromanzo films, and digital photogrammetry—you will create progressive designs for a reliquary, a sepulcher, and a necropolis. These designs should accommodate bodies in life and death and recognize funerary practices from the wide array of cultures collected in contemporary Florence.

Drawing the City
6 CREDITS | FACULTY:
Shreyas R KrishnanWhat makes a city? Is it the people in it, outside it, passing through it? Is it spatial, focused on geography or architecture? Or is it something intangible, like time, taste, or sound? In this studio, you will engage with the city of Florence through your sketchbook, exploring different methods of drawing at various locations. Your sketchbook will act as a repository of research and visual exploration that informs a series of scaled projects—zines, maps, postcards, posters—to frame Florence’s narrative through different lenses.
