93rd Annual Event Saturday, April 30, 2022
Fashion Design in the Sam Fox School The Sam Fox School’s fashion design program offers a multifaceted course of study focused on the intersection of clothing and culture. Moving through a curriculum that begins with the foundational understanding of textiles, design, fashion history, research, and culture, students undertake projects exploring a spectrum of garment design problems, fabrication strategies, and visualization options. Thinking in abstract, visual, and futuristic terms, students work to shape the changing fashion landscape with purpose and relevancy.
93rd Annual Fashion Design Show This year’s show highlights our program’s continued dedication to engaging fashion for the social good and with methods that preserve our planet for future generations. Our students have been engaging technology and sustainable practices while working creatively to communicate their vision for transitioning fashion into a positive force. The lineup includes garments produced for several different courses and collaborative projects.

Assignment Descriptions Introduction to Fashion
Taught by Jennifer Ingram and Mary Ruppert-Stroescu
Line and Color Students designed a linen jacket by exploring color and line as key elements, building on a kimono shape. Select jackets are shown.
Experimental Design
Taught by Claire Thomas-Morgan
Sustainability & the Future of Fashion Using only repurposed textile materials from Found by the Pound, students considered what the future of our planet holds, how the fashion industry will shape it, and what types of garments people will need in the future. Structure & the Architecture of Fashion Working with the body as a support frame, students experimented with structure and shape, extending from the body frame to occupy space.
Textile Design
Taught by Jennifer Ingram
Digital Textile Printing After creating 12 print designs, students selected one to digitally print on fabric and sew a product. Upcycling Rags to Riches These students dyed and embellished otherwise discarded sample jackets that were made from 100% cotton muslin.
Patternmaking and Production Taught by Jennifer Ingram
Geometry Dresses Students designed a cocktail dress that explores geometric shapes on the body. Attention to Detail Students designed a shirt and pant with specific requirements and emphasis on design details.
Fiber Manipulation
Taught by Mary Ruppert-Stroescu
Not Your Granny’s Crochet Students upcycled 100% wool “granny squares” to design and create a new garment composed of at least 30% of the original crochet work. Wrap It Up Challenged to interpret the concept of loss, students defined a visual language. Engaging shibori resist, discharge, and overdye, the designers draped the 2-yard piece to create a wrap generating zero waste with hand embroidery for assembly and ornament. Fibers by Design Students proposed a project that would incorporate two skills they learned and one new skill, defined the working method, and executed the work.
3D Fashion Design Fundamentals Taught by Jennifer Ingram
Tailored Overcoat Students incorporated the concepts of shape and volume with wool or wool-blend material to create an overcoat. Beyond the Gym Students experimented with cut-and-sew knit fabrics to create a look that would enhance the body.
Made to Model Independent Project
Coordinated by Shelei Pan, mentored by Mary Ruppert-Stroescu, PhD, and Dr. Salma Bachelani
Sam Fox School fashion designers and WashU students from Arts & Sciences, the McKelvey School of Engineering, and the School of Medicine’s Occupational Therapy program joined forces with Variety St. Louis, the Special School District of St. Louis County, and KEEN St. Louis to explore the needs and desires of 17 students with disabilities and create custom adaptive special occasion wear. Working independently from any class, the group chose from fabrics donated by alum Paula Varsalona (BFA71) and purchased with generous grants from WashU’s Gephardt Institute, the Sam Fox School’s CityStudioSTL, and the Women’s Society of Washington University.
Venus
With whimsy, romance, and a touch of floral inspiration, these fashions are reminiscent of spring — of birth and new beginnings. The designers embrace a sense of fantasy and wonder through fluidity, freedom, and pastel colors that come together to create a modern take on the Birth of Venus, a nod to the “birth” of these artists.

FUTURE The angular lines and color blocking of these designs push us into a future where we are unencumbered by the fussiness of everyday life. We are strong, determined, and bold. Sleek and streamlined, we move forward with a sense of purpose and clarity for the future.

Fresh-faced, uninhibited, and free, these deliciously reflective garments inspire a certain kind of philosophy: as they create a shine like water and drape with the touch of wind, we are reminded of the vast power of Earth, which inspires a freedom from within.
