Appropriately split between two modules, the results achieved throughout the winter semester were a direct result of the integration of DPM and the main studio project Through an intricate process of research and development stemming from the initial DPM module undertaken at the beginning of the winter semester, a design strategy was JSVQYPEXIH XS MR¾YIRGI ERH IRLERGI XLI ½REP HIWMKR SJ E high rise retail/accommodation block both structurally and aesthetically. Arranged as a research group searching for an example of nature from which a design strategy could be extracted and explored, the conclusion reached led to the adoption of bracket mushrooms. Interested in the ability to cantilever seemingly further than their fragile structure would allow them to whilst also inspired by the beautiful effects their ribbed surface evoked, it was mutually agreed as a strong starting TSMRX JVSQ [LMGL SYV MRHMZMHYEP HIWMKRW GSYPH FIRI½X ERH ¾SYVMWL 1] TIVWSREP TVIJIVIRGI [EW MR TEVXMGYPEV VSSXIH MR XLI coherence of its structural aesthetics, equally showing strong potential for practicality at a larger scale.

In this preliminary experiment we were particularly interested in the used of a strong structure over which a tensile membrane could be stretched and cantilevered over a large span. This process however was short lived; feeling this idea did not fully represent the properties and abilities the bracket mushroom represented or preset a strong concept which could be further explored. Rather than looking into a WMRKPI TVSTIVX] JSGYW [EW WLMJXIH SRXS XLI IRXMVI WXVYGXYVI FIPMIZMRK MX XS WLS[ JEV QSVI TSXIRXMEP XS FIRI½GMEPP] MR¾YIRGI PEXIV HIWMKRW
Wholly representative and true to the aesthetics of the entire mushroom, the 'structural ribs' covering the outside skin were seen EW QSWX WMKRM½GERX XS XLI FIEYX] and the structure. Using CAD to mimic these ribs and establish parameters, preliminary images were created to begin visualising the starting concept. As shown, the structural composition which allowed the mushroom to span and cantilever outwards was recreated, now producing a series of elegant curves which were truthful to the necessary structural properties of before. A level of aesthetically truthfulness was however lost due to the rigidity of the parametric design, which compromised that created through the natural growth of the bracket mushroom.

Moving away from the rigidity of the previous design, each rib was redeveloped to be unique rather than an exact replica of the other repeated over. The variety in size and shape further mimicked those of the bracket mushroom, resulting in a design which incorporated the key elements of structure and aesthetics into a fabricated model. The potential that lied in the structural composition of the bracket mushroom was effectively portrayed here, a cantilevering construction that could hold an above weight and retained the aesthetical beauty created as a result of its ribbed structure.

The ribbed wall is developed through the use of individual pieces, each unique from each other that combine to form an asymmetrical surface. Clustering three ribs together to create a miniature sequence, each one is spaced 5 meters apart to form a larger sequence that creates the transparent 'wall'. The resultant effect is for no rib to be an exact replica, instead similar only through positioning from one another. Allowing for a mimicked play on light between each sequence of ribs, using details as simple as glazing on the external surface can further enhance the captivating illumination of the wall which shift and changes across the entire surface.
Visualised at a larger scale, the sequential ribs of the ½REP QSHIP SJJIVIH E WIVMIW SJ design practicalities. As visually explained through digital image processing; The sequential pattern could be used to organise the entire project, forming a pseudo-grid from which the internal/external composition of the project could be arranged within. In turn the potential to create a transparent wall which could mark and cut off the project area from the surrounding street could be realised through the implementation of a ribbed wall. This in turn could allow the accommodation to be raised and cut off from retail, establishing clear sectioning of public and private space Each rib, as designed to be unique to one another, could further enhance the internal or external appearance of the ribbed wall with an asymmetrical shape that GYVZIH ERH ¾S[IH EGGSVHMRK to each sequence of ribs. It was to be a continuation of the organic structural aesthetics GSRWMWXIRXP] MR¾YIRGIH JVSQ the initial image of the bracket mushroom.
