Samuel Hammersley // Portfolio 2016 07964 917830 s-hammersley@hotmail.com After three years of study I have graduated from Sheffield with a BSc (Hons) in Landscape Architecture. Landscape is a degree which I thoroughly enjoy, combining my interests in science, geography and design. Over the last three years I have explored a wide range of creative processes and ecological design ideas. Now I am looking for an innovative practice who will further my learning and help me to develop as a designer. I am committed to working hard and ready to get involved!

Crookes Cemetery 3rd Year Integrated Design Project This final third year project focused on the re-design of Crookes Cemetery, a space that needs to cater for a large variety of users. This is a project I really enjoyed. There’s a huge amount of scope within the design to create a space that is elegant and refined, a place of ceremony as well as recreation. The design aims to deliver a practical solution to a well used and well loved site.

Crookes Cemetery 3rd Year Integrated Design Project Part of the joy of this site was the gentle topography. As a cemetery I wanted to create a strong sense of procession with intimate and more open spaces off along the route. The design also had to capture the distant views of the peak district. A series of small visuals were created from a model and turned out to be a really effective way of illustrating spaces.

Crookes Cemetery 3rd Year Integrated Design Project

As part of the integrated project an area of planting design was chosen. This was a really great way to focus on the details! The section depicts a mixture of shade loving green and white plants to the left, underplanted with a white woodland bulb mix. To the right of Taxus baccata hedge a heathland matrix, designed to imitate the Peak District is largely dominated by the colourful Calluna vulgaris ‘Anette.’

Ecological Design 3rd Year Ecological Mitigation Report Graphic series produced as part of a larger report. (Document can be found on issuu.com)

Ecological Design 3rd Year Ecological Design As the final part of our ecology module we focused on designing a more ecological plan for the proposed Smithy Wood Motorway Service Area. The site is built in an area of ancient woodland and the current proposals lacked in their ecological design and mitigation. As such a new masterplan and design report was completed. The project was really good fun and provided the chance for ecological research into species specific design.

Sustainable Housing 3rd Year Abbeydale Grange Site The third year housing module centred in on the old Abbeydale Grange School site. The heavily sloped site made topography a big issue. Following on from a field trip to Copenhagen the design took influence from the Kingo Housing project in Denmark. A large central orchard was created with a community building that would hopefully provide a central hub and encourage interaction. This project was a huge learning curve but thoroughly enjoyable!

Experience in Practice

Over the last year I have gained experience working in two practices. The work above produced during a 9 week internship. Through practice I have gained experience in housing

projects, schools, medical centres and sports pitches to name a few. In practice, through live projects I have learnt the most and would love to continue learning!
