Life at the Scuola

The Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, founded in 1969, has hosted international art programs in Venice for graduate and undergraduate students for over 20 years. In addition to international students the Scuola hosts Italian and international artists, for 1 to 12 week residencies. In our fully equipped studios, Italian and international students and artists exchange inspiration, ideas, experiences and techniques, while exploring and expanding their individual, creative work.

International students, as wel as resident artists, have 7 days a week open access to the Scuola’s studio extensive facilities. Life at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica provides the unique opportunity to interact with our Italian & international creative community. Our curriculum embraces all Printmaking mediums, Book-Arts & Calligraphy. Our faculty have taught and exhibited internationally. The Scuola’s laboratories are certified by local authorities and are provided with all safety and health features. A ‘Printeresting’ studio visit described our print-workshop as: “The largest and most well equipped print studio in Italy. It’s also one of the most lovingly organized studios I’ve ever been in”.

Programs FOR UNIVERSITIES study abroad courses For groups of (up to 13) students accompanied and instructed by their university professor. Courses taught by the Scuola can supplement the program. All year, 2-6 weeks

Semester/Academic Year FOR GRADUATE AND UDERGRADUATE STUDENTS Open to individual undergraduate and graduate Printmaking and Book Arts students who attend the Scuola’s curriculum alongside Italian students (instructed in Italian and English). Spring & Fall Semester / Academic Year

GRADUATE student ResidencIES A special residency program for a small group of selected students (max. 6) working on individual projects. With or without an accompanying professor. All year

Postgraduate Residencies Open to recent recipients of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. All year

Independent artist Residencies Open to individual artists. Frequently attended by art professors in sabbatical or during the Summer and Winter breaks. All year

STUDIO Facilities

INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATIONS

Accommodation is provided in the Scuola’s apartments in Campo San Maurizio, which is in the historic center of Venice, a 5 minute walk from Piazza San Marco and the Accademia. The furnished apartments are equipped with kitchen, bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities. Free wireless DSL Internet connection is also provided.

Students and resident artists work in our large, luminous, fully equipped printshop with presses for all printmaking media. Additionally, a painting studio provides individual work spaces. Download our photo-album>> for an overview of our facilities.

The Scuola is affiliated with Italian and international Universities, Academies of Fine Art and Museums. Among the international artists who have taught, lectured and worked at the Scuola are Henry Goetz, Stanley Hayter, John Ross, Michael Mazur, Jorg Schmeisser, John Virtue, Robert Storr, Jon Gregg (founder of the Vermont Studio Center), and many others.

ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL Life in Venice & at the Scuola Venice is a capital of the arts. Along with world-known events such as the Venice Biennale, the city offers daily exciting events: concerts at the Fenice and Malibran theaters, dance festivals and innumerable exhibitions in museums and contemporary art galleries. The Scuola itself also organizes events in order to introduce our students to the local art scene: presentations and talks, exhibitions in our SG-gallery, visits to outside exhibitions, and critiques/meetings with local contemporary artists.

Computer Room and Serigraphy There are 20 iMacs in the computer room equipped with AdobeÂŽ CS5. Students and resident artists also have access to a serigraphy studio, darkroom and machinery for photogravure.

Art Supplies Art supplies are available in shops as well as at the Scuola at a cost.
